Marilla: Anne, there's a letter for you.

Anne: Thank you, Marilla.

Anne: It's from Philippa.

Anne: Having spent the summer of my twentieth year uneventfully in Avonlea,

Anne: I stood ready to begin my junior year at Redmond come fall.

Anne: And then...

Anne: Phil is going...

Anne: to marry a minister?!

Chapter

Has the Real Prince Come at Last...?

Philippa: Dear Anne—spelled with an e,

Philippa: I'm writing to you from Prospect Point.

Philippa: I always like to spend summers at the shore,

Philippa: and this year, I've come to stay with my cousin Emily here.

Philippa: Emily's "select boardinghouse" has five boarders besides myself—

Philippa: four old ladies and one young man.

Philippa: The young man's name is Jonas Blake.

Philippa: The day I arrived, I saw him sitting opposite to me at the table,

Philippa: smiling at me as if he had known me from my cradle.

Dialogue: flashback,Philippa: Thank you.

Dialogue: flashback,Jonas: You're welcome.

Philippa: He is a theological student from St. Columba,

Philippa: and he has taken charge of the Point Prospect Mission Church for the summer.

Philippa: He has a big, loose-jointed figure with absurdly long legs.

Philippa: And his ears—but I never think about his ears if I can help it.

Philippa: But he has a lovely voice.

Philippa: If you shut your eyes and just listen...

Dialogue: flashbacktop,Jonas: How pleasantly astringent this tea is. Delightful.

Dialogue: flashbacktop,Old Woman: Indeed it is.

Philippa: ...he is adorable.

Dialogue: flashbacktop,Jonas: It's enough to gladden my heart.

Philippa: We were good chums right away.

Philippa: Of course he is a graduate of Redmond, and that is a link between us.

Philippa: We fished and boated together;

Philippa: and we walked on the sands by moonlight.

Philippa: By moonlight...

Philippa: oh, he was nice.

Philippa: Niceness fairly exhaled from him.

Philippa: Somehow, Anne, I don't want him to think me frivolous.

Philippa: This is ridiculous.

Philippa: Why should I care what a tow-haired person called Jonas,

Philippa: whom I never saw before, thinks of me?

Philippa: Last Sunday, Jonas preached in the village church.

Dialogue: flashback,Jonas: Today, I'd like to think about happiness with you all.

Dialogue: flashback,Jonas: To wit, what is happiness?

Philippa: By the time he had preached ten minutes,

Dialogue: flashbacktop,Jonas: Some people might answer, "to grow wealthy."

Philippa: I felt so small and insignificant

Dialogue: flashbacktop,Jonas: I think that gaining spiritual riches is a wonderful thing,

Philippa: that I thought I must be invisible to the naked eye.

Dialogue: flashbacktop,Jonas: but seeking only wealth pushes happiness away.

Philippa: Jonas never looked at me.

Philippa: But I realized how horribly different I must be from Jonas's ideal woman.

Philippa: He was so earnest and tender and true.

Philippa: He was everything a minister ought to be.

Philippa: I could have listened forever.

Philippa: He caught up with me on the road home, and grinned as cheerfully as usual.

Philippa: I had seen the real Jonas.

Philippa: I wondered if he could ever see the real Phil—

Philippa: whom nobody—not even you, Anne—has ever seen yet.

Dialogue: flashback,Philippa: Jonas, you were born to be a minister.

Dialogue: flashback,Jonas: You're right.

Dialogue: flashback,Jonas: I tried to be something else for a long time.

Dialogue: flashback,Jonas: But I came to see at last that it was the work given me to do—

Dialogue: flashback,Jonas: and God helping me, I shall try to do it.

Philippa: I thought that he would do his work and do it well and nobly;

Philippa: and happy the woman fitted to help him do it.

Philippa: She would be no feather, blown about by every fickle wind of fancy.

Philippa: She would always know what hat to put on.

Philippa: Probably she would have only one.

Philippa: But she wouldn't mind having one hat or none at all,

Philippa: because she would have Jonas.

Philippa: Anne, don't you dare to say or hint that I've fallen in love with Jonas.

Philippa: Could I care for a lank, poor, ugly theologue?

Philippa: Good night.

Philippa: P.S. It is impossible—

Philippa: but I am horribly afraid it's true.

Philippa: He can never care for me, I know.

Philippa: Do you think I could ever develop into a passable minister's wife, Anne?

Philippa: And would they expect me to lead in prayer?

Philippa: Phil Gordon.

Anne: I've an afternoon to spend in sweet doing nothing.

Anne: Shall I spend it here where there is a cozy fire, a plateful of delicious russets,

Anne: and three purring and harmonious cats?

Anne: Or shall I go to the park, where there is the lure of gray woods

Anne: and of gray water lapping on the harbor rocks?

Jamesina: If I was as young as you, I'd decide in favor of the park.

Anne: I thought that you claimed to be as young as any of us, Auntie.

Jamesina: Yes, in my soul.

Jamesina: But I'll admit my legs aren't as young as yours.

Jamesina: You go and get some fresh air, Anne.

Jamesina: You look pale lately.

Anne: I think I will go to the park.

Anne: I want to feel alone and free and wild.

Jamesina: Take your umbrella, for I believe it's going to rain.

Anne: Rain? I shouldn't think so.

Stella: You shouldn't flirt so with Mr. Blake—you really shouldn't.

Philippa: I'm not flirting with him.

Stella: You don't fool me. You're amusing yourself.

Stella: Mr. Blake isn't of the Alec-and-Alonzo type, Phil.

Stella: He takes things seriously.

Stella: You may break his heart.

Philippa: Do you really think I could?!

Stella: Philippa Gordon!

Stella: I never thought you were utterly unfeeling.

Stella: You are leading that man on deliberately—

Stella: and you know you don't mean anything by it.

Philippa: Not so, honey.

Philippa: I mean to make him ask me to marry him if I can.

Stella: I give you up!

Anne: Stella!

Anne: Give her a proper explanation later.

Philippa: You know I will.

Male Student: Excuse me!

Male Student: I... I know this is sudden, Anne Shirley.

Male Student: May I have a moment? Just a moment?

Male Student: Would you please hear me out?

Anne: I cannot give you the answer you hope for.

Anne: I'm sorry.

Dialogue: flashback,Anne: Oh, Gilbert, you've spoiled everything.

Anne: If the real Prince Charming will never come,

Anne: I need no substitutes.

Roy: Pardon me.

Roy: May I offer you the shelter of my umbrella?

Anne: P-Pri...

Anne: Prince Charming?

Roy: You'll get rained on.

Roy: Come under my umbrella.

Anne: Th-Thank you.

Roy: We can wait there until this shower is over.

Anne: I didn't know what I would do when my umbrella turned inside out.

Roy: If you'd like.

Anne: Oh, I have my own! But thank you.

Roy: My name is Royal Gardner.

Roy: And you are the Miss Shirley who wrote that Tennyson paper, aren't you?

Anne: Yes, I am.

Roy: I thought so.

Roy: Then we are schoolmates, I see.

Anne: I'm sorry, but I cannot place you at all.

Roy: I'm sure you can't.

Roy: I don't belong to any class yet.

Roy: I put in two years at Redmond, then I went to Europe for a spell.

Roy: Now I've come back to finish my arts course.

Anne: This is my junior year, too.

Roy: So we are classmates...

Anne: As well as college-mates!

Roy: I suddenly regret the two years I couldn't spend with you.

Roy: It appears even the weather has blessed our meeting.

Roy: Come. I'll walk you home.

Anne: Oh, you needn't. It isn't far.

Roy: Come on.

Roy: What shall I call you, Miss Shirley?

Anne: Anne. Spelled with an e, if you don't mind.

Roy: Anne. How was that?

Anne: Perfect.

Roy: May I see you again, Anne?

Roy: I'd like to talk at our leisure.

Anne: Yes. Yes, of course.

Philippa: Royal Gardner!

Philippa: Where did you meet him?! Be honest!

Anne: Today in the park.

Anne: My umbrella turned inside out and he came to my rescue with his.

Philippa: Oh! And is that exceedingly commonplace incident any reason why he should send us

Philippa: long-stemmed roses by the dozen, with a very sentimental rhyme?

Philippa: "Anne, my life till now has been but a prologue to meeting you!"

Philippa: You're blushing rosy-red.

Anne: Don't talk nonsense, Phil.

Anne: Do you know Mr. Gardner?

Philippa: Yes. Roy is adorably handsome and clever.

Anne: Is that all?

Philippa: I've met his two sisters.

Philippa: The Gardners are among the richest, bluest, of Bluenoses.

Philippa: Two years ago, his mother's health failed and he had to go abroad with her.

Philippa: He must have been greatly disappointed to have to give up his class,

Philippa: but they say he was perfectly sweet about it.

Philippa: Anne.

Philippa: I smell romance.

Anne: You goose.

Philippa: Anne, delivery for you.

Philippa: "Your eyes shine like the morning star at dawn. Roy Gardner."

Stella; Priscilla: Wow.

Philippa: "Surely you stole the rosy hue of your cheeks from the dawn herself."

Philippa: "Roy Gardner."

Stella; Priscilla: Wow!

Philippa: "Your lips are redder than the roses of paradise. Roy Gardner."

Philippa: Your dashing prince has arrived!

Philippa: Why, how handsome you look!

Philippa: Nine nights out of ten, I can easily outshine you.

Philippa: The tenth, you blossom out suddenly into something that eclipses me altogether.

Anne: It's the dress, dear.

Philippa: 'Tisn't.

Philippa: If Roy hadn't already lost head and heart about you, he certainly would tonight.

Philippa: But...

Philippa: that orchid in your hair.

Philippa: I'm sure it's a present from Roy, but I don't like orchids on you.

Philippa: Don't take offense.

Philippa: Orchids are too affected. They don't seem to belong to you.

Anne: You think so, too?

Anne: I admit I'm not fond of orchids myself. I don't think they're related to me.

Anne: But today is a special day.

Philippa: The reception for the seniors. I know.

Philippa: Look.

Philippa: Jonas sent me some dear pink rosebuds for the evening.

Philippa: But he isn't coming himself.

Philippa: He said he had to lead a prayer meeting in the slums.

Anne: That's a shame.

Philippa: I don't believe he wanted to come.

Philippa: Perhaps Jonas doesn't really care anything about me.

Anne: Even though he sent you roses?

Philippa: I know, but I'm horribly afraid.

Philippa: And I'm trying to decide whether I'll pine away and die,

Philippa: or go on and get my B.A. and be sensible and useful.

Anne: You couldn't possibly be sensible and useful,

Anne: so you'd better pine away and die.

Philippa: Heartless Anne!

Anne: Silly Phil!

Anne: You know quite well that Jonas loves you.

Philippa: Yes, but he won't tell me so.

Philippa: Not that I expect sentimental rhymes.

Anne: Mr. Blake is afraid to ask you to marry him.

Anne: He is poor and can't offer you a home such as you've always had.

Philippa: Very well.

Philippa: If he won't ask me to marry him, I'll ask him.

Philippa: That's all.

Philippa: So it's bound to come right.

Anne: Think hard,

Anne: and be mindful of Mr. Blake's feelings.

Philippa: How angry I was when you refused Gilbert, Anne.

Philippa: But I was wrong.

Philippa: Roy Gardner was foreordained for you.

Philippa: I can see that now.

Philippa: You were right, after all.

Philippa: By the way, Gilbert Blythe is going about constantly with Christine Stuart.

Philippa: Did you know?

Anne: No. Who is Christine Stuart?

Philippa: She's in Kingsport this winter studying music.

Philippa: They say she's very pretty and that Gilbert is quite crazy over her.

Jamesina: Mr. Gardner, you're the nicest young man I ever did see.

Roy: Oh, I'm sure I'm not.

Jamesina: Anne is a very fortunate girl to have met you.

Roy: Anne.

Roy: You look radiant this evening.

Anne: Thank you.

Roy: That orchid looks lovely on you.

Roy: Anne.

Roy: We still have time.

Roy: Would you mind a slight detour?

Roy: We met here, at this very spot.

Anne: Yes. It was an awful squall.

Anne: But we've fine weather today.

Roy: Meeting you that day was the greatest event of my life.

Anne: And mine, Roy.

Roy: Anne, I want to tell you plainly.

Roy: I love you.

Roy: I'm infatuated with you.

Roy: I can't imagine life without you.

Roy: Would you...

Roy: be mine?

Roy: Anne...

Roy: Anne.

Roy: Forgive me. Did I startle you?

Anne: A little.

Roy: Then...

Anne: Yes.

Anne: Me, too.

Anne: The prince of my dreams just professed his love for me.

Anne: A touch forcefully, I admit.

Anne: I've paid a high price for this day,

Anne: waited so long to hear my prince say that he loves me.

Anne: But...

Anne: I didn't blush.

Anne: I didn't burst into tears.

Roy: They seem to be enjoying themselves.

Anne: Yes, they do.

Gilbert: You went to the concert the other day, didn't you?

Christine: Yes.

Gilbert: So, what did you think?

Christine: Oh, it was marvelous.

Anne: I'll just run to the dressing room.

Anne: What is the matter with me?

Anne: Something doesn't sit right.

Roy: Anne! Here I am.

Anne: Oh. Thank you for waiting.

Gilbert: Hello, Anne. How have you been?

Anne: W-Well.

Anne: It's been a while, hasn't it?

Gilbert: Roy sought us out and made a point to introduce himself.

Roy: I'd heard you were childhood friends.

Gilbert: Oh, I'll introduce you.

Gilbert: Meet Miss Christine Stuart, future musician.

Christine: It's so nice to meet you.

Anne: I'm Anne Shirley.

Christine: You're childhood friends?

Dialogue: top,Gilbert: We grew up on Prince Edward Island, in a village called Avonlea.

Anne: She looks just as I've always wanted to look.

Anne: Rose-leaf complexion— starry violet eyes—raven hair...

Roy: I know, Anne.

Roy: Why don't you show me around Avonlea one of these days?

Roy: And Gilbert, too, if he's willing.

Gilbert: Yes, of course, Roy.

Christine: Then I'll join you!

Christine: I'd like to see it, too, Gil.

Christine: Do you mind, Anne?

Anne: No, of course not, Christine.

Anne: But...

Anne: I don't believe her nose is as good as mine.
