[sighs] What is this?

I found this at Mia's when I was there.

She has some

very paranoid theories about you.

She thinks you abducted her

and did some experiments on her

in some secret lab in a basement.

She wants to expose you.

[chuckles]

And?

It's not the first time

she's tried to ruin a career.

I mean,

she destroyed Lorenz completely, right?

I don't think you should discount her.

She thinks you're running

an ill*gal lab right here on your estate.

TO: ANDREAS WINTER

COME TO LAB NOW

She wants to get inside of it.

She said something about

a red book that she wants from you?

A red notebook?

[Baron exhales]

Who knows what she could do.

[tense music grows to crescendo]

[theme music playing]

I don't care about what you're researching

or whether it's legal or not.

I know better than anyone.

There's way too much regulation.

And you're already aware of

how thankful I am

that you got me back here

and out of the affair with Lorenz

unpunished

that I can continue my work.

All because of you.

Loyalty, that's that's all I care about.

How's your research going?

So far, so good.

I made some

interesting connections in Indonesia.

I'm glad.

[tense music playing]

[engine revving]

I'm pretty tired. Should we go to bed?

I have a presentation to finish.

- Okay, then.

- Thanks.

Ugh. This place is so gross.

I'd hire a maid, but all the others

think it feels too snobby.

I mean, what's snobby

about giving someone a well-paid job

so everybody's

not living in a mess like this, you know?

I think it's a win-win.

What's your presentation on?

Mm, it's about the end-in-itself formula.

Mm. Always treat humanity,

whether in your person

or in the person of any other,

never as a means to an end

but always at the same time as an end.

Yeah, and in theory, it sounds great,

but it's quite problematic.

- Can I print something?

- Sure.

Why is it problematic?

Well, what about situations where you

have to use people as a means to an end?

What if you could save 100 lives,

and in exchange, one person is sacrificed?

Kant would say it would still be wrong

to k*ll someone no matter what.

And he's right about that.

I mean, even if you'd be helping others,

it doesn't make it right to k*ll someone.

Yeah, but isn't it still worse

to let so many others die

if someone could've prevented it?

But how do you know that the 100 lives

would be worth more than the ones'?

And what if this person would go on

to invent some cure for some cancer,

for example,

and he saves millions

just because someone let him live?

Don't you think that one life there

could be worth more than the 100?

Yeah, but that's entirely hypothetical.

Yeah, but you need

to stick to principles, you know?

Otherwise, you can always find a counter

to everything and lose your moral compass.

The printer isn't down again, is it?

Oh, it's just a paper jam.

One second.

Try printing now.
