the Buitekants are leaving the house.

[Taylor] We're going to hang out

at one of my buddy's houses.

[Ruby-Beth] Yeah.

[man] They're headed to the car.

You can go ahead and move out.

We are on our way

to the Buitekants' house.

Both Ruby-Beth and her mom, Beth-Anne,

are leaving right now

with our lovely accomplice.

[Taylor] You're on the walkway.

[Danielle] They're going

to a friend's house

because he's having the "porch repaired,"

and he doesn't want them to come

in contact with the dust and the noise.

-[Taylor] Perfect. You gonna drive, honey?

-Yup.

[Taylor] Great.

That is a straight-up lie.

He's in on a huge secret.

We are about to transform the whole house

and the yard in one day.

Who does that?

We do!

Now, months ago,

Taylor sent us a submission,

telling his wife and mother-in-law

it was for a little makeover show.

I'm nominating my wife

and my mother-in-law

because the house has not gotten

the TLC that I think

they've put out into the world.

Changes to the house just have not been

a big priority in the last few decades.

You know, it's taken different forms

for all these years, but I love the house.

[Ruby-Beth] I've been

here at my home since 1984.

The house has two bedrooms

and one-and-a-half bathrooms.

We are busting at the seams, especially

since our little family has grown.

Taylor has joined us in the house

and now I'm expecting.

This is so high.

I would never be able to get a baby out.

Yeah, but we can just

wheel it around the house.

[Ruby-Beth] We struggle with space,

we struggle with organization.

This is where Taylor and I live.

This was my room as a very small child.

We really don't have space for this baby.

The hope is to reconfigure

so that we can fit a bassinet in here.

Here's hoping the baby is really small?

The kitchen, it's not

the most easy kitchen to cook in.

There's not a lot of counter space.

We definitely make do.

[Taylor] While we have the great news

of expecting our first child,

we're trying to balance joy and sorrow,

because, over the last year,

my mother-in-law lost her sight

as a result of

some pretty complicated medical issues.

[Ruby-Beth] Grab my arm

and feel where the chair starts.

[Taylor] Beth-Anne

has immense challenges ahead of her.

We've been rearranging

every piece of furniture we have

to make her life easier,

and have kind of reached our limits,

to the point where we need more room.

We like to do what's never been done ♪

[Danielle] Since sending in his video,

Taylor told Ruby-Beth and Beth-Anne

they weren't selected.

But the truth is, we've got

a convoy of trucks filled with our team

and everything we need in it

to make this crazy reno happen.

Now Taylor's job is to keep his family

away from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Any longer than 12 hours,

they're gonna start asking questions.

So, uh, we gotta get in and out.

There's so much family sentimental value.

[Adair] We don't have time.

How in the world

can Beth-Anne, Ruby-Beth, Taylor,

move around in here with all this stuff?

[Adair] They can't. They can't.

That's why we're gonna clean it up.

[Danielle] So how can we make over

a whole house in a day?

We spend months preparing

at this warehouse.

The Buitekant family.

Now the real challenge

is going to be fitting this family of four

into a Victorian-style bungalow

that has not been updated since the 1980s.

There's a lot to do.

-It's a lot to do.

-[Nick] A lot to do.

So from the front to the back,

Nick, walk us through.

[Nick] Front yard. We've got a ton of demo

and we're cleaning up those trees,

creating a nice simple walkway.

Repainting the whole house, and those

railway planters are gonna look fantastic.

We got a whole thing, Nick, Paige?

I'm very excited for this.

This entire backyard

is the special project,

and it's really relying heavily

on Nick and I, so you're welcome.

[Nick] We've got

the sensory kitchen garden.

This garden is more than just the veggies.

I want this to be a sensory experience.

I want her to smell the flowers,

I want her to feel

the different texture on leaves,

I want her to hear running water in

her garden, have that be a moment for her.

Yes!

We need this to be a spot

that Beth-Anne can easily access.

And Paige came up with

a brilliant solution.

[Paige] From the kitchen,

we add French doors

leading out into the garden, right?

I designed this pergola because I felt

like when she goes out into her backyard,

I want her to be

able to have a place to sit,

but I also feel like it's a beautiful

resting and gathering place.

-[Adair] Nice touch.

-[Erik] Love it.

Going into the living room, we know that

they like character and color.

So we're incorporating that

into the furniture and also on the walls.

[Erik] Uh, let's go into the dining room.

There's no space for them

to eat together in this dining room.

So coffee table out of here,

dining table in.

We'll make it happen.

Uh, and then we walk into the bedrooms.

-We've got two bedrooms.

-[Adair] It's clutter.

We need to get

all that stuff up off the floor.

We're doing all new furniture.

We also are painting.

We're also fixing their storage issue

and creating spaces to make sure

that things have a place to go.

Also, we need to find

a space for a new baby.

Tier him up with the dog.

Put the dog on bottom

and the baby on the top.

He has no kids, you guys.

So what I've come up with is we're gonna

steal a little space from the entry.

I'm going to have you reframe

just this small area here.

I think it may work

for what we need in the baby's room.

As long as we design this

with storage in mind, it has to happen.

We have to do this.

There is no other alternative.

I think it's a very clever solution

to a very precarious situation.

Okay. So, their kitchen.

The kitchen is a disaster.

They deserve a kitchen

that allows them to cook and be together.

This is really cluttered.

So we need to clean this up.

The flooring needs to be updated,

and they need more storage

and counter space.

We kinda need to

scratch the kitchen and start all over.

I have an idea. It's a little bit insane.

-You see this whole section of the house?

-[Paige] Yes.

[Erik] I'm just gonna go ahead

and remove that.

And then

I have a kitchen that's pre-built.

And when I get

these things on the forklift,

I drive in here

and I drop it right in place,

so that we can tack it to the walls

and to the floors.

This is, by far, the fastest way to get

this family a new kitchen in 12 hours.

But I haven't been under the floor,

I don't know what the joists look like.

There is a 20% chance

that the joists underneath the kitchen

can't hold the weight of that new kitchen.

-I mean

-[Adair] This is crazy.

-[Paige] I think it sounds really cool.

-[Nick] I don't know

-[Adair] This is crazy.

-[Erik] Deep breaths.

It sounds amazing,

and, like, I love the confidence.

But Paige and I are building an

entire garden through those French doors.

If that forklift is there

for any longer than you're telling me,

we're gonna have to make sacrifices,

and I don't want that to happen.

and there's no kitchen?

What are we going to do

with a big hole in the wall?

Then we slink right on out of there

If that kitchen doesn't go in,

Best-case scenario,

we drop it down slowly,

everything goes okay, it holds the weight.

Slower is not a good word

for a day like today.

kitchen-in-crawlspace in my book.

Right off the jump,

what I'm seeing is the two-hour time block

in which I'm forklifting

that kitchen into the house.

It's great to get it out of the way early

so we have all of this

time in the afternoon,

but that's assuming

that it actually goes well.

I'm just worried if this goes

one, two, three hours,

we're gonna end up

sacrificing the garden itself.

We can't lose the garden, so

Yeah, but if there's a forklift in the

middle of the garden, there is no garden.

It's stressful.

I know there's a lot going on. I will say

that if it gets done and we pull it off,

it's going to be amazing.

The difference, though, is that this time,

serious health issues over the last year.

From a bum shoulder replacement

to a found brain tumor,

and the results of that treatment

have cost her her eyesight.

Beth-Anne is such a genuine person

that she sees the best in people,

sighted or no sight.

[Beth-Anne] Given that I can't see,

it has been challenging.

I'm trying to adjust to it

one step at a time.

I see a little bit of light.

Maybe I'll be able to actually see

a little bit of the baby,

but I'll be able to feel the baby.

[Ruby-Beth] It's been hard

trying to figure out a lot of the physical

changes she's been going through,

and simultaneously I feel very honored to

be in a position to be able to care-take.

Yeah, so Beth-Anne brought Ruby-Beth here

when she was an infant, correct?

Right, um, Beth-Anne bought

this house 42 years ago.

Beth-Anne has been

giving back to this community

for 40 years since she got here,

and she raised her daughter

to do the same.

They haven't had anything extra

to put into it.

Everything that they've

accrued has gone out,

whether that's rented trailers to go

to Katrina or Sandy, and provide aid

-That's amazing.

-Anytime there's extra, it's not for them.

[Ruby-Beth] My mother is the definition

of a community worker.

[Beth-Anne] I've been involved in

social justice issues most of my life.

And then, of course,

after Ruby-Beth was born,

I mean,

she went to demonstrations with me.

I just took a pregnancy test.

Aside from becoming a mama,

this is the most

miraculous thing in my life.

across the same threshold that my mama

brought me across is pretty spectacular.

getting out of the car.

I started shaking pretty immediately.

I was stunned

by everything that was going on.

And we have something

very special for you.

[Beth-Anne] Okay.

Well, what are you doing here?

I am the host of this new show,

-Our house looks completely different.

What does it look like?

Taylor has been my helpful accomplice

in all of this

to make sure that

you all stay away from the house.

There's been a lot of people here

working on your home in a day.

We thought we maybe

were getting the porch sanded.

[Ruby-Beth] I'm shocked. This is

gorgeous.

Well, just to

hear you say "gorgeous" is like

that's overwhelming.

It's overwhelming.

The shutters and the door,

and the windows,

and everything are these beautiful teal,

turquoise, and grays.

-And it just looks beautiful.

-I can't see it, but I can imagine it.

-[chuckling]

It just seemed unreal.

[Danielle] I'm excited to show you

the inside of your home.

[Danielle] Mama, I'm going to put you

right here on your new loveseat.

[Ruby-Beth] It's a new and, like,

really fresh, beautiful-looking loveseat.

[Taylor] But your wicker style

is still here.

[Danielle] No holes in it.

-That feels good, don't it?

-[Beth-Anne] Yeah.

[Danielle] Yes! That's all yours, Mama.

[both laughing]

It's time for you two to share a moment.

Would you like to go see

the inside of your new house?

-Are you ready?

-Okay! I'm gonna let you open the door.

-[Ruby-Beth] Okay.

And I'm gonna sit right beside you, Mama.

[laughing] What am I looking at?

Whose house is this?

I couldn't believe anything.

I felt, like, a real,

true shock of how beautiful it was,

and how put together everything was.

-Your daughter's face is in shock.

-[Beth-Anne] Oh, that's grand.

-She's smiling so hard.

-[Beth-Anne laughing]

It looks probably her cheeks hurt.

-[sniffling] To your right.

-What?

[gasps] Oh, my gosh.

[triumphant music playing]

It was a completely new experience,

opening the door to my childhood bedroom.

I can't believe this room.

This is a room that two adults live in,

you know?

And it's beyond words,

perfect for our life.

[laughs and sniffles]

I guess, should we keep going?

How do I leave this perfect room?

[Taylor] Come here.

I just can't stop thinking about

[gasps] What?

-[emotional music playing]

-[Ruby-Beth] How?

-How is this possible?

-[Taylor] This came, it came in

-Where did this room come from?

-[Taylor] This was all clutter.

[Ruby-Beth sobbing]

There's a changing station.

There's a little nursery

we've created and built.

It has a crib in there.

It has a changing table.

A baby room was one of the things that

has been on my back-of-my-mind list

as a problem.

And I open a drawer

and there's actual diapers in there.

It really started to feel incredibly real

and thrilling.

[Danielle] But let me

tell you something, ma.

You laid this foundation.

You planted the seeds, and now it is time

to receive the fruits of your labor.

-And now it's your turn.

-[sniffles] I'm ready. Okay.

It is time for you

to experience your new house!

-You are stepping into your new house.

-[Taylor] Your new house.

Into a blue door.

Yes! It's like a pastel color.

[Ruby-Beth] All right.

You're just about at the threshold.

[crying] Maybe we just need to

have some silence for a minute.

[Ruby-Beth] You want to take a minute?

[Beth-Anne] Silence is sacred.

And I really wanted us to hold the house

and all of us in the light.

And to continue the joy

that's occurred there.

[Danielle] New beginnings, Mama.

[Taylor] Same soul.

I was just so glad

that she was able to reel us all in

and be in charge of her home.

I was just really happy for her

and proud of her.

Yeah.

Yeah, it was a moment that was her.

[Ruby-Beth] Come on in.

[Ruby-Beth] So you're stepping onto

into the front room.

[Beth-Anne] Yeah.

It is now a very dark, like, royal blue.

-Ooh!

-The entire thing.

The house feels so fresh.

[Danielle] This is the bassinet

that your lovely grandchild will be in,

that you're gonna pick them up in.

-[Beth-Anne] Yeah.

-[Danielle] This is it.

[Beth-Anne] Oh, my.

Yeah, it's all miraculous.

You gonna have to learn this, Ma,

'cause this is your space.

We wanted it to be airy

and give you the freedom to move.

You're right, I can feel it.

[Ruby-Beth] It is just completely

different in terms of navigating,

you're gonna have a much easier time

walking around this room.

[Beth-Anne] Coming into my room

and just feeling the space,

there's a freshness

and a newness to it all.

It has the kind of bed that I

probably would never

have imagined myself having.

And it's also the height that I need,

as I was using a stool to get into my bed,

-and it was getting a little tippy.

-[laughing]

[Danielle] You are entering into

your new living room.

-[Danielle] Ruby-Beth, your face!

-I mean, who's living room?

-[Danielle] This is yours!

-I hear the words you're saying.

It looks really cool.

It just is so open,

and it feels, like, so inviting.

[Danielle] I think it's time

to transition to the kitchen.

[Taylor] So you're walking into

a boldly white kitchen.

Look at these counters.

-[Ruby-Beth] What?

[Ruby-Beth] Just the amount of space.

It's like,

where did this space all come from?

It's so open and clean.

I never thought I would have

such an inviting kitchen in my life.

[Taylor] Oh, my God.

It just feels so big.

It looked so ready to have

somebody cook a meal in there.

So we wanted to make sure

that your house felt airy and warm,

especially the kitchen, and bright.

But we also added this feature

so that the house felt accessible,

and I want you to listen to this.

-Hey!

-[Danielle] Wow!

[Ruby-Beth] That's so cool!

And we have these French doors

that lead directly to your new garden.

What?

Yes, ma'am, we busted a whole wall.

In the best way.

-[Beth-Anne] Really?

-Yes, ma'am!

[Beth-Anne crying] 'Cause we kinda

dreamed of something like that.

[Danielle] Oh!

Oh, that's incredible.

I just love French doors.

I love connecting the kitchen

with the out of doors.

It was really grand.

French doors right into the yard, Mama.

It's unbelievable.

[Danielle] And we're

gonna go out there right now.

I'm comin' home ♪

[Ruby-Beth] When she stepped out

into the garden,

and we're getting whiffs of basil

and some other herbs that were around,

and literal steps from the kitchen,

that was pretty special.

Where I belong, I'm comin' home ♪

[Danielle] We wanted to make sure

that this space felt,

um, not only visually pleasing,

which it is, Mama,

but we wanted to make sure that

you were able to experience this as well.

So it is very sensory

because there's a lot of basil out here.

-Yeah, there's wonderful smells.

-[Danielle] There's some thyme.

[Ruby-Beth] I actually noticed

an eggplant.

-Really?

-Planted in the garden already.

-I can't wait.

-[laughs]

We wanted to give you a space because

you've given so much to your community,

to your family.

You've planted seeds of love and care.

This is that moment that you get to have.

You did this.

We wouldn't be in this situation

if it wasn't for you

and the values that you have,

and the way that you walk on the Earth,

and the way that you treat people.
