creativity, and adventure.

So it's a brand-new day,

and every single one of you
could still become the next in fashion.

Nigel and Deontré,
you both won your last challenge,

but there's no advantage this time round.

-[designers laugh] Ah.
-Of course.

-I wanted to. She said, "No."
-Gotta keep you on your toes.

-You can't be always giving advantages.
-I told you, she's bad cop.

I really wanted you to have something.
She said, "No, Tanny."

So are you all ready
to hear about your next fashion adventure?

-[designers] Yes.
-Absolutely.

For this challenge, you'll be designing
based off an inspiration source

that hits extra close to home.

[electronic music playing]

-It's also inspired our looks today.
-[designers] Yeah.

Okay.

For this challenge, we wanna see you all

completely reimagine

your very own

childhood outfits.

[designers] Oh my God!

G, how's yours inspiring us today?

[Gigi] Well, I used to ride horses.

I spent a lot of time
at the barn, in the hay, in the dirt,

so this is kind of like

a re-upped, chicer version
of what I used to spend my days in.

-Like an equestrian look? Woo!
-Yeah.

-[all laugh]
-[Gigi] And how about you, Tanny?

[Tan] I am very South Asian.

We wore South Asian clothes at home,
so mine is a reimagined South Asian look.

Wow, that's amazing.

Thanks, Amari!

It feels amazing.

So, for this challenge, we aren't talking
about you designing based on memory.

We're talking about
a slightly more specific reference point.

Your actual childhood photos.

[designers laugh] Ooh.

I have so many to choose.

We want you to be inspired by
and reference your childhood look

and turn it into something completely,
completely new.

And, remember, storytelling is key
for this challenge.

These looks should all tell us
something about your life.

Okay, teams, as always, we will be
welcoming an extra-special guest.

You've seen her looks on the likes
of Adele, Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss,

and many, many more.

She is known the world over
for her bohemian aesthetic

and her effortless Parisian styling.

I love Isabel Marant.

I love the chicness
of every single runway show,

every single collection that she does.

I just am such a fan of her.

You must each
sketch, sew, and deliver just one look.

-You have seven hours today to work.

Tomorrow you're gonna have
a couple more hours to finish your looks,

and then it's gonna be runway time again.

You know, it feels like
we were just there, doesn't it?

-Yeah, we were.

Our favorite reimagined look
will be named the winner,

and, after it's all said and done,

we will also have to send
another one of you home.

What was I feeling in my childhood?

-What you think about this one?

I feel like I could reimagine a one-piece.

This is when I was, like, seven years old.

[Nigel] Look at that smile.
You was happy. [laughs]

Childhood challenge.

-Can't wait to see their baby pics.

I'm looking forward to seeing

how they use
that one little nugget of something

and then create a runway look.

Yeah, and I'd like to see a collaboration

of who they used to be
and who they've become.

My mom always put me
in these damn barrettes.

[laughs]

-I could not stand it.
-So are you gonna use them?

-[Amari] Yes!
-[Eliana] Yeah.

My entire garment
is gonna be hair barrettes.

-We don't want a look for kids.
-We do not.

That's where I hope that Eliana
and Megan's design style doesn't get lost

because this challenge
is already taking us to juvenile.

If you could imagine a kid wearing it,
it's probably not what we want.

Oh baby, don't get me... ♪

So in the photo, I have bracelets on,
like, up to, like, my elbow.

I used to do that a lot when I was a kid.

I would find vintage jewelry or clothes
and just put on as many as possible.

I wanna create
these, like, wonky arms with huge hands

to mimic the way that the bracelets go
from the wrist to the elbow

and, like, extend the arm.

I've struggled being insecure
throughout my life,

so I wanna show how, like, fashion
was protective for me as a child,

like this was always something
I could, like, express myself in.

Growing up, I used to wear a lot of suits,
so this is me.

I know I look
like a little bad little kid. [laughs]

[Desyrée] You do. [laughs]

[Deontré] This photo is so special to me.

It just takes me back to that time
where my dad would dress me in suits.

I loved watching my dad put on his suit.

I got to see a lot
of different ways he loved to dress,

and that inspired me to get into fashion.

So today I wanted
to reimagine, like, a ten-piece suit.

[hip hop music playing]

I love the cheese.
Why this photo? Why is this important?

This one's important to me

because it's the apartment
that I'm standing in front of.

My mom had me at 17,

and she moved
into that apartment building.

She was 19 in that picture.

My grandma had just died.

Oh, I'm sorry.

This is really, like, the first time
I saw my mom, like, step into her own.

She kept me together and raised me right,

so she really taught me what it was
to be, like, an independent woman.

I just wanna let her know,
like, "I see you. I appreciate it."

-Like, "You are my hero." You know?
-[Tan] Mmm.

So how are you gonna
make your mum more proud?

This is the first time
I'm working with a female model,

so I wanna really embody something
that's, like, strong and feminine

and really represent my mom.

So I'm gonna take that velvet element
from the jacket,

then make a more business
white dress shirt

with these velvet panels,

and then I'm gonna do
probably a wide-leg denim

with signature pleat lines,

so it's kinda giving that sexy,
oversized, like, cover-the-shoe vibe.

What do you think
your mum would think of this?

She gonna be like, "I need one, Ray!"

-I wonder if I could just ask her?
-No.

My inspo is... got a picture of me
in some denim overalls.

Just plays perfectly to see, like,
how my mom used to dress me all the time

and influence my fashion career
later down the line, you know,

like how in love
with denim I am, you know.

So I think I wanna do,
like, a triple-layer jumpsuit

where it has three layers on top,

and you can either tie one,
have one hanging, you know, wear one.

Yeah, so it's gon' be,
like, super innovative.

[whirring]

Hey, guys.

-How you doing?
-I'm well. How are you guys?

I'm being a little excruciating
on this shirt,

but it's important.
It's gonna be the centerpiece.

-Tell us why. Can we see your pic?
-Okay.

Yeah, you can see my pic,
but the math isn't gonna really add up

because, you know,
I have two big brothers.

-So this is actually me here on the left.
-[Gigi] James!

I don't know if you guys know or not,
but I'm actually transgender.

-Okay.
-So a lot of people don't know I'm trans.

Especially when you look at me.

Is this a difficult challenge
for you, then?

Yeah. Because I have to look
at this picture all day, it really sucks.

-I'm sorry.
-[James] It's okay.

It's just, like, I don't have
a lot of photos of me as a kid because I...

they're so hard for me to look at.

Like, I threw a lot of fits
when I had to wear dresses.

-[Tan] Okay.
-Full meltdowns.

-From a young age?
-Oh yeah.

-[Gigi] You knew.
-When I was three. Yeah.

I lived my entire adolescence
and my teenage years as a girl,

but I knew deep down
that something was different.

I wanted to wear my brothers' clothes,
but I didn't wanna embarrass my family,

so I tried to, like,
wear the dress and put on makeup.

That happened time and time again.

It was Christmas when I was three.
It was high-school graduation.

It was being a bridesmaid
in some of my friends' weddings.

I just dreaded every single family event

because I hated wearing a dress
the whole time.

I mean, you feel so vulnerable,
and you know that this is not who I am.

You're not meant
to be uncomfortable every day.

After my gender transition,
I finally felt comfortable,

and only then did I understand
you can just be yourself,

and so I just wanna be here
as a role model to let people know,

trust what you know is right and go do it.

This is probably
the most difficult for you

of all of our challenges so far.

However, I wonder if it is nice
to know that you get to do something

you could potentially have worn.

Like, if you got to be
who you really wanted to be as a kid,

that's what you show us today.

Yes. Exactly.

There's cool elements I wanna use

because a lot of the design elements
you see in there, I do like.

So I wanted to do a blue shirt
to fit in with my brothers

with, like, a gigantic Peter Pan collar
in white

and some plaid shorts.

We're looking forward to it.

Designers, I hope you haven't gotten lost
down memory lane

because there are only four hours left.

-Ah.
-[Bao] Oh my God.

[Deontré] Ow. Ow.

-[groans]
-[Eliana] I loved my childhood.

Really close to my sister, my mom,
and my brother, who is in the oven.

[laughs]

I'm wearing a sort of princess dress,
like, a tutu, some holographic fabric.

I fell in love with fashion originally
more of in a costume-design way.

I always loved putting on plays and things
with my sister,

you know, dressing up
out of our costume chest.

So I really wanna do
a shorter c*ck dress

that has all these ties in it

because when I would play dress-up,

I'd be, like,
tying all these things onto myself,

and then I really want to bring
some drama on the shoulders,

so I'm thinking this tulle cape

that you can kinda wear and be playful in.

It's like... [playful laugh]

[laughs]

And I love that about it.

I'm trying to be creative about it,
and I hope the judges see that. [laughs]

-[Gigi] Godoy, Godoy.

I love that you were
dragging it up so young. Well done.

It was a one-time thing.

It was my brother's 15th birthday,
so it was his quinceañera,

but you don't get a quinceañera as a boy.

-Yeah.
-Right.

The entire family
switched gendered clothing.

This is a time
when I've literally felt like myself.

Even at seven years old,
I've always known that I was "different."

When you are
first-generation Mexican-American,

you are taught customs
that your family brought back from Mexico.

And a lot of the time,

to be flamboyant
is not okay in the culture.

The night I came out to my mom,
I thought I was gonna get kicked out.

But my mom said, "You teach your kids
how to be great humans...

[voice breaking]
...not who they should fall in love with."

[gentle music playing]
♪ Oh, yeah yeah yeah yeah... ♪

From there on,
my mom has always been supportive of me.

When I told her I wanted to do drag,

she actually gave me money
to buy a pair of heels.

Whoa, my mom is kick-a*s. [laughs]

The kid in that photo

definitely had wild dreams
and aspirations for their life,

and I can proudly say
that I'm achieving them now.

So how are you taking this
and making it adult Godoy?

I am making a quinceañera dress.

I'm gonna do
a full off-the-shoulder suit bodice

with a coattail detailing in the back,

and I'm pairing it with a ball gown,

so I'm playing
with the gendered blurred line.

My full name is Danny Godoy,
but now I just go as Godoy.

As a child, I went as Danny,

and this outfit that I'm making is
little Danny's inspiration for the future.

-[Tan] Good luck.

What you're doing
to the chest right there?

It's based off of this.

The childhood photo that I'm picking

is my family's first time
going to an amusement park.

My mom made us all our own dresses
for this event

for us to, like, fit in
and look like we belonged,

and that we were well-to-do Americans,

and that we weren't immigrants, you know?

I'm wearing this blue plaid dress
with this, like, amazing collar,

which... I'm using it
as the focal point of my dress.

I definitely want to design the collar

into kind of these, like,
floating diamond organza pieces.

I'm gonna make it tight on the bottom
and short, sexy

with a cascading train
with a big bow in the back.

My mom always wanted
to be a fashion designer.

This is me
kinda bringing her creation to life, too,

but in my own way
of who I am now, so it's...

I wanted to focus on my hair

because my mom
constantly put me in these hair barrettes.

So I wanna create a strapless minidress.

I'm gonna use the orange tulle
and the hair barrettes

to emulate, like, an orange peel

or the fruit
that was on my childhood dress.

So tell me about Mom.
How did she dress you as a kid?

-Were you allowed to do you own thing?
-No.

-[Tan] Okay.
-I wish I was.

I grew up in a conservative,
more strict household.

Both my parents were in the army.

They definitely raised me
with strictness and structure.

My parents would pick out things
that were more oversized,

so I always felt swallowed.

Because I wasn't able
to wear the things that I wanted,

I started making the things that I wanted.

I made tighter garments,

and when I put on those tighter garments,
I felt more empowered.

I felt confident.

-Your mum, was she a stylish lady?
-Always.

Where is she today?

-Probably on the beach. [laughs]
-We should check.

-I mean, her Instagram name is slimthic71.
-[Gigi and Amari laugh]

which is what I want.

Because that's what I'm wearing,
a Cinderella little costume.

But tulle takes a lot of time
to actually get a shape going

'cause it's flimsy,

so I'm having to cut all these pieces

and gathering it to really kinda create,
like, the flounce that I want.

Oh yeah, I love it.

-[Megan] James, how you feeling? You okay?
-I gotta seriously triage this.

[Megan] Is it just bringing back
bad memories?

I take a step back to look at it
from sort of a runway distance.

I am hating it. I'm hating the collar.

I felt like I was just getting my kid self
dressed in something they hated again,

and it's like, "What's the point of this?"

I'm just not happy with it right now,
and that's a crappy feeling.

What is it you're not happy with?

It's like it's derivative
of a dress I hate. Like... [scoffs]

of maybe shifting it slightly or no?

[James] Probably.

[Tan] I mean, even in this picture,

there are elements you could take
that still are a nod to this,

but aren't the damn dress.

I found some knit-rib cuffs

that reminded me

but I put it in a turtleneck,

and I found
some tennis-ball yellow paracord.

I'm making a drawcord.

I didn't even know I could make that.

I don't care if I win, but I'm not losing.

I think I've always been
extremely hard on myself,

Growing up, my parents wanted me
to be excellent at everything that I did.

It's definitely influenced
the way that I act.

I think I overthink so much.

It has to be the best,
something I'm proud of.

I wonder if this is too flat on me.

I don't know what I'm gonna do.

So I'm feeling all over the place.

probably because I've spent so much time
working on the details.

I love the direction she's going in.

However, the skirt is just a white skirt.

If it's not done meticulously,
it could read very cheap.

she's creating a cape.

Right now, it's looking,
dare I say, crafty.

like, my take on a suit.

The most complicated aspect of the design
is the collar piece

'cause I have to hand pin everything
on her

so that it's exactly hanging
and floating the way I want it to.

Like, it is a mathematical equation
that just needs to be solved

in, I don't know, two hours. [chuckles]

[Godoy] Can you put these on?

I'm blind, so just be careful.

[Amari] I'm down to the wire
with this design.

My garment's nowhere near finished,

Parisian designers today.

-Does it hurt your neck at all?
-No, not at all.

[Amari] Woo. I think I'm just screwed.

When you were a kid, did your parents
let you dress yourself or...

-Ugh, it was a nightmare.
-[Tan] Really?

You know, I was wearing
what they wanted me to wear,

and as soon as I will go to school,
I will change. [laughs]

[Tan laughs]

Are you all ready for the show?

-[Gigi] I love the top.

I wish that the dress
wasn't just that white material.

[Tan] Plain white, I know.

I don't mind that the skirt is so simple

because you have this thing
that attracts your eyes,

and it's more happening up there.

This fabric seems a bit basic
and kind of cheap.

[Tan] Cheap, yeah.

[crowd applauds and cheers]

[designers cheering]

I like the mix of the half shirt,
and the trouser looks very nice.

The trouser is what I love.
I love how it's super relaxed.

[Gigi] It's beautifully done.
It looks really finished.

-I like the fabric choices too.
-Yeah.

-[designers cheering]

There is something
a bit too childy for me.

It's maybe more the tulle thing
and the headpiece.

I like the dress though.
I just don't like the fabric.

[designer] Come on, D!

-Fire.

I'm glad that he used
that iridescent material underneath

'cause I think it makes
the matte suiting fabric pop much more.

[Isabel] The contrast of the two fabrics
is really nice, yeah,

and the whole look
looks very contemporary as well.

[stage manager] ...two, one, go.

Love this.

-[designers cheer]
-[designer] So cute!

-It turned out better than I expected.
-And this is Megan, I'm sure.

I think the dress underneath is cool.

-[Isabel] I like the colors together too.
-[Tan] Yeah.

It could be very juvenile,
but it is not in the end.

No, it's not, yeah.

[Jason] It looks like
1960 British Voguecover.

-Yeah.
-[laughs] That's true.

-[Desyrée] Little light tap!
-Love that.

I think it's sexy. It's cool.

-And I love the orange. I'm very orangey.
-I love orange too.

[Jason] A barrette corset?
That is innovative.

Yeah. I do wish the construction
was better on her chest.

[Isabel] And the transparency,
I think it's very interesting too.

Girls would love it.

I love it.

[designer] Come on, Nigel!

-[Isabel] It's maybe something not so new.
-[Jason] I get what you're saying.

Like, we've seen this utilitarian thing
over and over again.

But using that really hardy,
substantial silver zipper, I like it.

[Tan] It's very wearable.

-And that pop of neon?
-[Jason] Oh, sick.

-It's beautiful.

I love the pink checks
with the neon yellow.

[Jason] What I love the most
is also the proportions.

[Gigi] Mm-hmm.

Last model lined up, and go.

[Tan] I love this!

-He gave this man a sweetheart neckline.
-[Gigi] Yeah.

-And a bustline with shimmery shoulders.
-I know! I know!

-The tailoring is so good.
-It's super nice.

[Jason] It's fresh.

It's knocking down all the barriers.

Still has the tie on, has a bustier,
has a skirt, and then has Oxfords on.

It's perfect. I won't change anything.

[stage manager] Guys,

Well, before we get going,
we would love to see your baby pic.

-[James] Sure.
-Let's take a look!

-[judges] Wow.
-[Jason] Aw.

[Tan laughs]

James, tell us
how this image inspired your look.

What's really cool about the image

is my attention in that photo,
it's actually on my brother's shirt.

I'm the kid in the dress.

I'm transgender.

-That kid needed to wear something else.
-[Tan] Yes.

And it was important to me
to make that outfit.

[Gigi, Jason] Yeah.

I really love the contrast
of the very neon bright yellow

with this pinkish check.

It's modern. It's feminine and masculine.

I'm quite impressed.

Thank you so much.

The thing that I really appreciate,
you gave us wearable.

Even if they're not trans,

they can wear this and think,
"I'm still wearing a fun piece."

We know how hard
this challenge was for you.

I think I took too much from that photo,

and I tried to pull the things
that I knew I didn't like,

and so I had to edit down
what parts I did find cool.

That's a sign of a great designer.

Being able to take away
something positive, happy, joyful,

and create something like this
that all of us can relate to

is really powerful.

-My only thing, lose the scarf.

I don't think it's the same look
without the scarf!

The little neon detail at the back
is so cute.

[Gigi] I love that.

So, Bao, let's see your childhood photo.

-[judges] Aw.
-[Isabel] Wow.

We were immigrants and were very poor,
so my mom, she would make clothes for us,

and so, like, the first thing I noticed
was the shape of the collar.

And so I let the collar shape
kind of dictate the rest of the design.

I love this shape collar
because now it really makes sense to me

how you multiplied it
and make it into this very sexy top

when it was, like,
inspired by something very childish.

The skirt, the fabric, the way it is,

it looks almost like a neoprene,
and neoprene can look so cheap.

I think, the way that the plaid is laid
behind the white,

it makes this white less stark.

So to use such a solid white on the skirt,
it was a little bit distracting.

You're right. The two whites together,
it makes the skirt pops up.

-Yeah, it was so harsh.
-Too much, yeah.

I wanted to do more with that skirt,
but it was just like,

-I had to make this function.
-[James] Right.

[funky music playing]

The trousers are crazy!

Like, you made a proper hood crease,

but you did it with a stitch.

It's epic.

The idea of the sash,
the proper button-down.

It's just so cool.

-Okay.
-[Tan] Can I do one thing?

-Is this tied up?
-Tuck that.

I wish I had more body.

When you do that,
you give her full sexy, full dude.

[Jason] I'm stoked about it.

It's new, and it's very hard to kinda
redo a suit in an interesting way.

Because it's a pinstripe, it has a line,

and if it's slightly crooked,
it is very noticeable.

-Execution is quite important.
-Gotcha.

I love the sleeve. I think it's so fun.

I think it's such a great take
on your bracelets, your bangles,

and I love that you added beads in between
to kind of nod back to that.

I would've done a different fabric.

That fuzziness gives it a little bit
of, like, a crafty feeling.

-But it was such a fun look and so you.
-Thank you.

I wonder if you could've pushed it more.

-It feels very safe for you.
-[Isabel] Well, you know me.

Of course, overall is something
I always love to work on,

and I think it's really well achieved.
I love the hardware.

It's, like, really answering
to each other,

and when I see you,
it makes even more sense.

[Tan] Hi, Eliana.

Before we get going, I would love for us
to take a look at your childhood photo.

-Aw. Little sweetheart.
-[judges laugh] Aw.

My first kind of love affair with fashion
was playing dress-up with my sister.

We would always be
diving in the princess costumes,

throwing tutus around,

and so I really wanted to capture
that just love of playing

with shiny fabrics and tulle.

I love the dress underneath,
but I think the tulle is k*lling it.

Oh, you don't like it? Okay.

I think it makes it
a little bit too childish.

-[Gigi] Will you take off the cape for me?
-Yeah.

The top of the dress is my favorite part,
that top halter and the cutout.

The ties are maybe taking it to a place
that are too childish.

I wish that you would've stuck
to, like, a chic shape

and left out some of the extra bits.

Okay.

I like the silhouette of the dress,

but it still feels a little childish
because of your fabric choice.

It feels too crafty for me.

Okay. That's fair.

But they really liked the dress.

[Godoy] I wanted to bring
little Danny and Godoy together as one,

hence the tie,
mix masculine and feminine energies.

I love your top, the shape,
and it's very couture.

I love that you put
the shoulder of a man out.

I really love it.

I do love that you kept it
really simple with neutrals.

That is very difficult to achieve
if you don't do this meticulously.

You did it meticulously.

You understood
that that person right there

is the only thing that matters.

I'm not a crier, so I'm trying not to cry.

But what I have to tell you

is that this is next in fashion.

When we talk about simplicity,

and that's the hardest thing to perfect...

Everybody can put bells and whistles
on things,

but you made something so simple
and so timeless and so you,

and the just position
of whatever this planet is supposed to say

about feminine and masculine...

I know who I am as a person
and a designer,

so to feel validated
by such amazing judges

is like the cherry
on top of my validation.

Amari, how did your childhood photo
inspire your creation?

Since my outfit was so print heavy,
I wanted to use that as my color palette,

and then I also wanted to take details
from, like, my collar

and then I kinda came up
with creating my own print...

-Yeah.
...with my hair barrettes.

That idea, to build a barrette corset
on someone, that is innovative.

I literally love the concept
of this party dress,

but it doesn't look as finished
as I need it to look.

Amari, you gave us something
actually really unique.

Using unconventional materials
can read crafty.

You've done it in a sophisticated way
that still seems really playful.

My main criticism is
the construction is seldom there...

-Right.
-...because you flap for so long.

-I know.
-You... You do what you think we want.

-Do what you want.
-Right.

You're wonderful.

Oh, don't make me cry.

I know it was
a really hard challenge for you.

[crying] I'm so hard on myself.

Why?

Growing up, I always had to be,
like, better.

Like, I can't just be normal.

My dad would be like,
"You have to be excellent."

So I tend to get in my way
because, you know, I overthink.

-[Tan] Yeah.
-[crying] Thank you, Tan.

You give the best hugs.

[Tan] I wouldn't do this with anyone else,
but I know how important being cute is.

Yeah, because I'm single!

Not once you wear that dress
for one night.

that felt so new and also classic.

I have quite a crush for that.

Desyrée felt a bit more dynamic
and finished.

It felt new.

James brought us something that was
a different take than everyone else's...

-[Tan] Agreed.
-[Gigi] ...but wearable for so many people.

[Jason] Eliana, for me.

Today just didn't feel
as serious and considered.

A bit too costumey, a bit too...
Too childish.

Bao's look,

there was great work up top
and at the back,

but that white skirt negates it.

I was kind of let down today
by one of my constant favorites,

which is Nigel.

-[Tan] Same. I expected better.
-[Jason] Yeah.

you've only been doing this a few years,

but the look didn't feel as polished,

especially with the cape that you gave us.

We all agreed that it wasn't as inspired
as we wanted it to be.

I didn't think
