01x08 - Deontay Wilder & Melvin Gordon

Post by bunniefuu »

- Four... three... two... one.

That's what I'm talkin' about, baby!

- MELVIN: Can somebody get these
gloves off me?

[laughs]

[theme music playing]

- DEONTAY: Unleashin' a pit bull!

All your pain, all your anger...
right here, baby.

That's what I'm talkin' about, baby!

[crowd cheering]

[grunting]

- I'm Melvin Gordon,
and I'm a professional football player.

- COMMENTATOR 1:
Melvin Gordon's still going...

he's still going!

- I'm Deontay Wilder,
and I'm a professional boxer.

- COMMENTATOR 2: Oh! Wilder!

- MELVIN: Yeah!

- This is what I might have to do
to Euros. Step on up.

- ALEX: We're gonna just do
your dynamic warm-up first.

I'm takin' it y'all do
nothin' like this in your camp, huh?

- DEONTAY: No, we don't.

What up!

- MELVIN: We work the sand, brother.
- ALEX: Yeah.

All right. The first drill
is just a competition.

There's gonna be a band around your waist.

All you're gonna do is start here...

come, pick up the tennis ball,
come back.

- Sounds good.

- Gonna get to it.

- ALEX: Ready? Go!

- With football, bein' in the sand,

makin' it heavy on your legs,
it can help my cuts,

my stamina, and the footwork.

- DEONTAY: Like unleashin' a pit bull!

- ALEX: Yeah.

- DEONTAY: Yes, indeed.

Made that look easy!

To be at the top of our profession,
we have to have a strong work ethic.

How often you do this...

- You know, I do it on the turf
all the time--

- Yeah.
- But, you know,

I like doin' sand work
and stuff too, so--

- Right. Right.

Melvin's condition is superb
with the coordinations with the sand...

- Let me see something.

- DEONTAY: Let's get it!
- All right!

- He was getting down low,
you know, he was pivoting.

He was looking real good.

[groans] Lord have mercy.

This is gonna be hard.

- MELVIN: Go!

- All right.

Come back!

[Deontay grunts]

- Sand is 12% more effective than wind,
so you get great resistance on your legs.

- MELVIN: Intensity.

- DEONTAY: There's no quittin' in me.

- Go get it!

[all panting]

- sh*t.

- Wait, you're making me look
all pro-first team, player.

- DEONTAY: What?
- MELVIN: Oh, man!

This man's gonna love this one.

- ALEX: It is so hard running in the sand.

- Yeah, you got to have
that body control, my baby.

- sh*t!

- ALEX: All right.
The last drill is called chair.

- DEONTAY: Carryin' that ball on the sand,
you know, he did a very great job,

keepin' his base form...

I mean, you can definitely tell that
he knows what he's doing on the field.

- ALEX: Yeah!

- OK. Made that look real nice.

Make me feel like there's hope.

- MELVIN: I like just seeing how he works.

- ALEX: Go, champ. Go!

- Steer. There you go.

You know, I like to see
how people train.

Steer.

When you fall down, you get back up.

Get up. Get it. Let's go!

You know, just little things like that.

You know, that's what I, like--
you know, that move me.

- DEONTAY:
The beach workout was good, you know,

especially with the sand.

When you apply the sand with the heat...

that becomes a challenge,

but with me-- with my heart--

I gave the best that
Deontay Wilder could give.

Oh, sh*t.

Man, that was a blast.
- Yeah, It's different, man.

It is different.
- It's a hell of a workout.

I'm happy to be training
alongside Melvin,

but now it's my world--

We're gonna see what he got
in the boxing ring.

- MELVIN: Second location.
- DEONTAY: Hold on. Second location.

Well, man, welcome to my world!
- MELVIN: For sure!

- DEONTAY: From the field to the gym.

[bell dings]

All right, what we're gonna do is
we're gonna do a short movement forward.

Hands up, in position...

come in.

- MELVIN: With football...
- To the right.

- ...everything is instinctual.

- DEONTAY: Big step, small step.

- MELVIN: You know, when I do my reps
and stuff out there on the sand...

- DEONTAY: To the left.
- MELVIN: ...it's just for muscle memory.

[laughter]

There's so much to think about.
- Yeah, I know. Start over.

- MELVIN: When I'm in here, you know,
I'm thinkin' about this,

I'm thinkin' about my footwork...

- I want you to apply the jab
with it as well, too.

- MELVIN: It's hard. It's hard.

- There you go. That's better.
There you go, Melvy.

I always imagine if I was a running back,

using my stiff arm as a jab.

Just imagine running that rock
like you do.

Boom! Boom!

Use that boom!

Man, this is gonna be crazy.
You know what I'm sayin'?

- Yeah, I do. You know,
me as being a running back,

that's what I, you know, pride myself on.

You have to-- To be a good running back,
you have to have a great stiff arm.

- So this is the fun part.

- Jab. Jab. Jab. Jab.

Good. Right. Good. Right.

Good. One-two. Good. One-two hook.

One-two hook right.

- When I meet people who are professionals
and great at what they do,

you know, I'm like a open book
'cause I'm really learning.

You know, this is not what I do, so...

- Great. Left hook, right. Good.

- MELVIN: When he's just movin' around
and rollin' and he's dippin' his hips,

there's a lot of that when you get
one-on-one on an open field.

- Up right. Up right. Left hook, right.

Right. Left hook, right.
- Boom!

You know what I'm sayin'?

- You all got like,
a beginner's session of that.

[laughter]

- DEONTAY:
So, I want you to do the same thing.

- Oh, man.

- DEONTAY: Here we go, work time!
- MAN: Let's go.

- Get in formation.

There you go, champ. There you go.
- Jab. Jab.

Jab. Jab.
- Don't push it, though.

- One-two.

- Keep your balance. Keep your base.
-There you go. Jab.

- DEONTAY: There you go!
You're killin', baby!

- MAN: Right hook, straight, left.

- DEONTAY: There you go!
- Jab!

Just jab.
- Oh, my bad. My bad.

I'm glad you've been in here, bro.
- It's time to make you a k*ller!

What this drill is for is,
for your mental state-of-mind,

because the body is worn-down,
you're drained, you're getting fatigued,

so we gotta give it all we got.

All right. Thirty seconds.
We want you to burn out.

Let's go. Thirty seconds, baby. Let's go.

- MELVIN: People don't see
behind the scenes, though.

People see Friday Night--
people see Sunday Night Football...

- Bang it out, right now. Twenty seconds.
Let's go, baby!

- MELVIN: ...but no-one knows
the little things that go into,

you know, tryin' to be successful,

- All your pain, all your anger...

you're lettin' it out right now--

When you have greatness in front of you,
you just have to rock with it.

Let's go, baby. Everything!

It could be the best thing
that ever happened to you in your life.

...three... two... one.
That's what I'm talkin' about, baby!

To this day!
- Ooh!

Can somebody get these
gloves off me?

[laughing]

I'm definitely gonna mix boxing
into what I do,

but it's the mind-set that you could
really get away from somebody

who's really great at what they do.

Well, hey, man, I appreciate you.

- Thank you so much.
- Y'all take me through the drills

and stuff.
It was nice meetin' you.

- The pleasure's mine, man.
Thank you for sharing your energy with me.

I'm definitely gonna take
what I learned, man...

- Yeah. For sure, for sure.
- ...especially with that sand, man.

It gave me a eye awakenin'...
- Yes, sir.

- ...of what it felt like.
- Respect it.

- DEONTAY: Blessed.
- MELVIN: Much love to you, baby.
