01x04 - The Vinsons

Post by bunniefuu »

['80s-style sitcom intro playing]

[canned cheering]

Breakfast is ready, kids!

- [canned cheering continues]
- [both laughing]

[Carlotta] Whoa! No rush!

There's enough pancakes for everyone.

- Thank you, Mom. We love you.
- Thank you, Mom. We love you.

Aw.

- And I love you.
- [canned laughter]

[canned cheering]

And what about me?

[canned laughter]

- Daddy, we love you.
- Daddy, we love you.

[canned audience] Aw!

Honey, did you do something to your hair?

Because you look great.

- [canned audience] Aw!
- Just a bit of a trim, that's all, hon.

[canned laughter, cheering]

The Honey Pops are gone.

- [canned applause]
- What was that?

[canned laughter fades]

[sighs] The Honey Pops are gone.

[chuckles]

[Dedo, echoing] Carlotta?

Honey Pops.

The Honey Pops are gone.

Carlotta?

Carlotta!

Honey Pops?

What do you think I should do about it?

[grunts]

You okay?

You look pretty tired.

Yeah. All good.

Just watching all these people,

and they're just going about their lives,

as if nothing happened.

Dedo, we've been doing this for weeks,
and now we're...

still no closer to finding Wanda
than we were.

Detective Rauch keeps brushing me off.

So, obviously, the police aren't
any closer to finding her than we are.

[sighs] It's only a matter of time.

I'm sure we'll have a breakthrough soon.
I feel it.

- [sighs]
- [sighs]

Ole's been saying that we should try
a drone with a thermal imaging camera.

Should we get one?
I mean, what do you think?

Maybe it's worth a shot.

Yeah, okay.

Okay.

Then... how about if you take today off

and get some fresh air, have a nice bath?

And then tomorrow we'll start again.

I'll keep watching for a little while.

It makes me feel like I'm doing something.

All right.

I'm gonna make myself a sandwich.

[phone buzzing]

RÜDIGER

DEDO, STOP IGNORING ME.
TELL HER, OTHERWISE I WILL.

{\an8}DAY 0

[Wanda] About a hundred years ago,

this Swiss guy named C.G. Jung
defined synchronicity as

events which seem to happen
only coincidentally at the same time

but are still connected with one another

and only make sense together.

Honestly, he was probably
a bit over the top.

But, still, the idea is quite interesting.

I mean, have you ever thought about

how many things have to happen
together at the same time

so that, in the end,
everything happens exactly as it happens?

And what if only one tiny detail
were different?

Your life would take
a completely different course.

Just like when my mother thought
it would be a good idea

if our neighbor Karin cut my hair,

and then she gave me
these ridiculous bangs

which made my whole third grade hell.

Hey, fate can be a real as*h*le sometimes.

DAY 96

[Rauch] Wanda leaves the house.

Her cell phone is then found
at the coffee shop.

This is where her shirt
is thrown into the charity bin.

And this is where she appears
in Lenka's photo.

Hmm?

The mobile data of Lenka's cell
indicates that she landed

here, here, here,

here, and then lastly here.

Okay. Then she apparently drove nonstop

all the way back to the Czech Republic,

where she drives
off the side of a mountain.

Well, maybe she nodded off.

From all that driving she did.

[sighs]

It looks a bit like a mouse.

Nose, there are the ears, then the tail.

[chuckles]

So, the picture at the statue here
is Lenka's last post.

And the post before that was over here.

Ah, hello. So, have you found the culprit?

Um...

The thing that was eating your birds.

Ah, that's right. Yes. Yeah, yeah.

Um...

Yeah, we, um...

We think that it's a, uh... a badger.

A badger? Oh, that's exciting.

I think they're just
awesome animals, right?

Uh, but it's unusual
that it would try to attack a bird.

Yeah?

Yeah, that's true. It's just that
this one's a real as*h*le, you know?

[Dedo] Mm-hmm. Right.

Uh, so, anyway, we thought we'd search
in the forests around our house

for its, um, nest.

And my son was talking about drones
that have thermal imaging cameras?

I've got just the thing you need.

[whispers] A badger?

Seriously?

[sighs]

[typing]

Lucie. You're lurking. Why?

You know I don't like it when you lurk.

Everything okay?

[Lucie] Yeah. Yes.

[phone ringing]

Yes?

Ah.

Sorry, sweetie. Give me a minute.

Mm-hmm.

What?

I thought we'd sorted this out already.

[sighs]

Well, that's less than ideal...

[door opens, closes]

[Lucie] Hey. It's me. Uh...

I just tried to talk to my mom again,
but she's too busy.

Freaking out a bit,
but it's probably fine, right?

I mean, Lina didn't get her period
for two weeks,

and that's just because
Mercury was in retrograde.

[gasps]

Please call me back.

[sighs, grunts]

Oh, man.

- [bartender] All right. There you go.
- [patron] Thank you.

Have you ever broken a man's heart?

Harald! What did we say
about scaring off our guests?

- Shh!
- Uh-huh.

- Sorry.
- [bartender] Yep.

- Sorry.
- Mmm.

His wife has dementia
and was just put in a home.

- Oh, I'm sorry.
- Mm-hmm.

- And then his girlfriend left him.
- Oh.

- Oh!
- Everything all right, Harald?

- Mm-hmm.
- Mm-hmm. [chuckles]

What can I bring you?

I'm investigating
the disappearance of a girl.

Wanda Klatt. Yeah, um...

I know the family. It's such a shame.

[singing] Anita!

- Harald!
- ["Anita" playing on the jukebox]

No, it's actually another girl.

Okay.

No, I don't know her.

- Who is she?
- An influencer from the Czech Republic.

[laughs]

Those influencers are not exactly
our typical clientele.

She was here last Nuppelwocken Night.

Well, lots of people come here
on that night.

It's the busiest day of the year,

what with the parade and our football
game going on, well... [clicks tongue]

- So why are you looking for her?
- She's dead.

- She's dead?
- She had a car accident.

- Oh.
- Presumably.

[bartender] Mm-hmm.

- On the Czech border.
- Oh.

- Less than 24 hours after she was here.
- Oh, God.

Well...

[sighs]

No. No.

I don't recall seeing her. Sorry.

All right.

- In case you think of something.
- I will reach out.

- Goodbye.
- See ya.

["Anita" playing on the jukebox]

- Harald, seriously, again?
- Anita.

[bartender] Yes, Anita.

["Anita" continues playing]

- Hey.
- What are you thinking?

What? It's delivery day.

You said the last installment's due today.

Not here.

Come on.

{\an8}DAY 96

- [bell rings]
- [pop music playing]

{\an8}DAY 0

- Hi. What'll it be, hon?
- Yeah.

I'll take a shot of tequila
with pineapple juice.

But the pineapple has to be fresh.

Just give me one of those, all right?

Great costume.

What are you? A scarecrow or something?

I'm the Nuppelwocken.

It's Nuppelwocken Night.

WuppelNocken?

Nuppelwocken!

Puppen-Dockel?

- Nuppelwocken.
- I have no idea what you're saying.

[both laugh]

It's an old legend.

See? That's the Nuppelwocken.

It's a monster that lives in the forest,

and every hundred years it comes into town
to snatch a young lovely girl.

Love that. I better be careful, then,
wouldn't you say?

Right, you should.

- Anything else for you?
- Oh, yeah.

First off, do you know what a pangolin is?

- What?
- They're super cute.

But did you know there were actually
over a million pangolins

poached illegally last year alone.

Stop filming now, please.

I'm trying to locate the mastermind

of the biggest wildlife smuggling ring
in Europe.

Listen, I asked you very politely
to stop filming.

He calls himself the King.

- She asked if you would stop filming.
- Hey.

You put your hands on my stuff, Voldemort,

you're going to get
a shot of pepper spray.

Wow! Hey, hey!

Look, I've never heard of any king.
Got it?

So finish your drink
and get outta here now.

- Haven't you?
- Nope.

That's strange.

Because he does
a lot of transactions from here.

Black Souk. Ever heard of it?

It's a marketplace on the dark web.

Now, the mistake most people make

is believing the dark web
is a hundred percent anonymous.

You see? But with that,
those guys end up vulnerable.

Wait just a minute.

Mmm.

What?

Don't look at me like that.

Listen, man, I have 125,000 followers.

So don't make me set the trolls on you.

Boo!

King wants to speak with you.

Write down your info.

You want X, TikTok or Insta?

Your phone number.

Okay, boomer.

Oh, PS, this beer is disgusting.

Yeah, it's me. I need you here. Right now.

DAY 96

Hi! How are you?

Hey! Nice to see you.

[sighs]

No, thank you.

Okay, ma'am, but this is the only bus.

Um, I'll wait for the next one. Thanks.

The next one is in an hour.

Yeah, that's okay. Thank you.

Hmm.

[Lucie] Okay, see you later.

[chuckles]

Wow.

- [Ole] Wanna try?
- [Dedo] I don't think that's a good idea.

- [Ole] Let's see what this thing can do.
- [Dedo] Mm-hmm.

How are you doing, son?

You feeling okay? I mean...

Things have been a bit crazy lately.

Losing Wanda like that, with no warning.

Without a reason.

It affects you, right?

It makes you realize

how tiny all of us are in this giant,
chaotic universe, don't you think?

Like little mice,
running around on the train tracks.

Unaware that they could be smooshed
at any minute.

And once you see the world
from that perspective,

you can't get rid of it.

How does it ever end?

What do you mean, son?

What if we don't find her?

We'll find her, okay?

We have to find her.

- Yeah?
- Mmm.

Okay, let me see. Where are we?

That looks familiar.

[Ole] That's the new kebab place
that just opened. Spicy Snacks.

Shall we swing by after for lunch?

A guy from my class went.

Was it good?

He sh*t his pants at the movie theater.

Hmm. I'm thinking burgers?

- Mm-hmm.
- Okay.

So, from here, you can continue north
to the intersection.

Follow the main road to the roundabout.

- Mm-hmm.
- Past all the apartment buildings.

- Mm-hmm.
- Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on.

Then, at the corner, right there,
stop, stop, stop.

Yes, exactly. That's it. Ground zero.

The donation bin where the police
found Wanda's T-shirt.

Okay.

Buddy, now just take her up
as high as you can.

Okay.

[Dedo] Wow. Okay.

So, we've done all these. Those too.

All that's left are these and the houses
by the edge of the woods.

Wanda, honey, we know
you're out there somewhere. Come on.

Give us a sign.

Wanda!

[Dedo chuckles]

- Wanda!
- Wanda!

- [Dedo] Where are you?
- Wanda!

- [classmate] Hi, Lucie.
- Hi.

[classmate] She's in one of my classes.

EARLY PREGNANCY TEST

They're all pretty much the same.

I would take this one.

It comes in a double pack and...

it's a really easy one.

It's for a friend.

[Carlotta] Mm-hmm.

Then tell your friend that
she doesn't have to be embarrassed.

Practically every woman

has likely experienced it once.

We just don't talk about it.

I never talked to my daughter
about it either.

I guess I thought that if I didn't,

it wasn't gonna happen.

That sounds pretty stupid, right?

Whenever I try to tell my mom,
she doesn't have time.

Lucie, I believe,

for this conversation, she'll make time.

How do you know my name?

Um...

Because you go to the same school
as my kids.

I... I'm the mother of Ole and Wanda.

Ah.

I thought I knew you from somewhere.

Yeah.

I-I'm sorry about the thing with Wanda.

Yes.

She was cool. I hope she comes back.

I didn't want to...

Do you need to sit?

We could get a coffee or, you know.

Yeah. Let's have coffee. Sure.

Okay.

[sighs]

[grunting]

[panting]

[sighs]

[beeping]

Huh?

[Dedo] Wow. It's good, isn't it?

You know who we can, um,
recommend Spicy Snacks to?

- Uncle Rüdiger.
- [Ole laughs]

I think he'd be really happy that we did.

[both laugh]

It was fun hanging with you.

We really should make an effort
to just hang out more often.

But it isn't easy.

You and Mom are busy
with all this Wanda stuff.

Yeah, but we will always
have time for you too.

You know that, right?

Um...

Are you and Mom gonna get a divorce?

What? No.

What makes you think that?

Did your mom say anything?

No, no.

She's just angry always,

and then you do stuff
that makes her even more upset.

Well, buddy, I swear
that I'm doing my very best.

Yeah, I know.

[Harald] What is that?

- Oh, sh*t.
- Hmm?

He's found the bug.

Oh, that's not good.

Police? Somebody broke into my house.

That's not good at all.

- Should Mom know this?
- Absolutely not. No, we've got this one.

Come on.

We just have to get
the camera out of there.

- [tires screeching]
- [horn honking]

[horn honks]

[Carlotta] That's really nice of you.

I'm already better.

Not sure what that was.

It's okay. I get it.

It's gotta be tough.

Wanda's the grade above me,
but I remember her.

She was always so sassy but so glamorous.

Mmm.

Yeah.

That's her all right.

I met someone the morning she disappeared.

In the woods.

You're late.

[man] I took a detour
so no one would see me.

The whole town is out and about today.

No one saw you, right?

Just relax.

You're so paranoid.

Listen, I could lose my job for this.

You're 15. I mean, I could go to jail.

Nobody saw.

I swear.

- [Lucie] And I saw Wanda.
- [moped engine revving]

Did you tell the police that yet?

Why not?
That's important, for heaven's sake.

Yes, I'm so sorry. I really am.
I know I should have said something.

I wanted to say something, but I...

He made me promise to stay quiet.

What do you mean? Who made you promise?

He's a teacher.

[exhales] Wow.

Okay. Well, I get it.

I assume that that's what this is?

Oh, Lucie.

- Lucie, Lucie, Lucie, Lucie...
- Don't tell my mother, please. Okay?

All right.

I won't tell your mother.

[doorbell rings]

[Dedo] Mr. Hessel, it's the police.

Huh?

[Harald] Hey!

[grunts]

What do you want from me?

[grunting]

Help!

Hey! [yells]

[Dedo] How is he so strong?

[Ole] This is not good.
This isn't good at all.

- Get the camera!
- [Harald] Let go, as*h*le!

Get your hands off me!

You're messing with the wrong guy.
I was in the military.

[Ole] What did you do?

Why did you hit him so hard?

It was self-defense, what?

Is he dead?

No, he's not dead.

It doesn't look like he's breathing.

- [shrieks]
- [Dedo, Ole scream]

- [gasps]
- [Ole] Oh, no.

You freaked me out. Why do you do that?

- [Dedo] Oh, my God. What did we do?
- What now?

I've been following Wanda's investigation.

Tons of people are posting about it.

Really?

Have you heard of the creepy house?

What-What creepy house?

It's a house on Forststraße.

The last one on the left-hand side.

No one goes in and no one comes out.

It's this awful gray color,
like rotting flesh.

There are signs all over
that say, "Keep out"

and "Beware of the dog"
and "No trespassing."

But we've never heard any barking.

[gulps]

But they say that at night
the residents roam through the forest.

Only coming out when it's totally dark
and when it's a full moon.

Then they search for their next victim
to devour.

[thunderclap]

- Wait a minute.
- Well, that's just one theory.

Plenty of others think that Wanda
ran off with Cirque du Soleil.

[Carlotta sighs]

Well, listen.

If you want to, you could go in there
and take these now.

I'm sure everything will be okay.

But if not, then we can figure out

what to do about this whole thing
together, hmm?

Okay.

DAY 96

King. Oh, wow, you're not what I expected.

Look, I know
that you're a very busy smuggler,

so I'll go ahead
and get straight to the point.

Either I go and tell the police
everything I've got,

or you give me
an anonymous exclusive interview.

Mm-hmm.

Well, the video is already made

and it's locked and loaded
in my drafts folder,

and all I have to do is post it.

The real question here is,

do you want the narrative controlled
by me alone?

What?

Seriously?

Okay, drop me a pin and I'll be there.

[chuckles]

{\an8}FOREST VIEW
T-SHIRT

[sighs]

Come here.

Hey.

[Carlotta sighs]

Lucie, listen.

You seeing that man is not a good idea.

Hey.

There are really cool guys
that are your own age.

Like my son, Ole, for example.

[laughs]

I don't think I'm Ole's type, but...

[Lucie breathes shakily]

NOT PREGNANT

[grunting]

- [stomach grumbling]
- [grunting]

[tow truck driver] Not on my watch, pal.

- [groans]
- [stomach grumbling]

[groans]

Oh, man.

[Rauch sighs]

We're dealing with a dead influencer.

- [groans]
- [horn honks]

I mean, surely someone else
could have taken this call for us.

[sighs] We've got bigger fish to...

- to...
- [Dominik groans]

[doorbell rings]

[Rauch] Mr. Hessel. You called?

It's Rauch, from the Police Department.
Please open the door.

Quiet. What do we do?

Mr. Hessel, are you there?

I don't know. Try the back door.

- Good idea.
- [doorbell rings]

[Rauch] Mr. Hessel?

Where's the van?

- I left it right there.
- [grunts]

[Rauch] Okay, Mr. Hessel. We're coming in.

[banging on door]

What shall we do? We gotta get outta here.

[door breaks open]

Slowly. Come on, come on.

- [whistling]
- [dog barks]

Come on. Come on.

[engine running]

Hey. Hey!

- [tires screeching]
- Hey!

- [tires screech]
- sh*t.

- [stomach grumbles]
- [whimpers, groans]

[straining]

[panting]

Thanks for...

Well, you know.

Yeah, you got it.

Yeah. Just one thing.

On the, well, that morning you saw Wanda,

do you remember
which direction she was headed?

[Lucie] She drove in this direction.

But she was alone.

That's wonderful.

- [car door closes]
- Well, thank you.

Lucie?

- What are you doing here?
- [Carlotta] Hello.

We know each other.

I'm Carlotta Klatt.

The mother of Ole.

- And Wanda.
- Oh, God, that's right.

I've seen you at school events.

You're the queen of potato salad.

[chuckles] Yeah.

Yeah, uh, Lucie...

Well, she saw me

and... and she expressed her sympathy.

I didn't know my daughter
was so empathetic. She...

Well, with me, she hides that side.

I just wanted to get ice cream.

Later maybe we could watch a movie?

That sounds great.

Listen, you go pick something out
and I'll be right in,

and then we can ride home together?

Hmm?

Um...

I just wanted to say that I...

I can't even start to imagine
what you are going through.

If you ever wanna get a coffee
or need someone to talk to,

you know that I'm just
right down the street.

- I'd like that. Thanks a lot.
- Yeah? That's great.

Put your number in here
and I'll sh**t you a text. Okay?

Yeah?

[vehicle approaching]

God. Man. People really drive
like idiots sometimes.

Yeah.

[tires screech]

Do you think we were followed?

I don't think so.

[exhales]

[phone ringing, buzzing]

Should I answer?

Mm-mmm.

You know that your mother can never
find out about any of this stuff, right?

Uh, what part?

Do you mean breaking into Mr. Hessel's
and then punching him in the face?

Or stealing a van
and then running away from the cops?

[phone continues ringing]

[both laugh]

Oh, God.

Oh!

Of course I'm not gonna tell her.
You think I'm nuts?

She would k*ll me.

- She would k*ll you.
- She would k*ll me.

But then get them to revive you

- just to k*ll you again.
- Then k*ll me again.

Then she would send you
to a school in Switzerland

where they speak Latin and they
dress you up like Harry Potter.

[Carlotta]
Could you turn left here, please?

Uh, you can just stop right here.

- [shutter clicks]
- [dog barking]

{\an8}BEWARE OF DOG!

[dog continues barking]

Okay, that's great. Thank you.

Okay, let's ditch the van in the woods,
all right?

Yeah.

Huh?

What is that?

[Dedo] Rüdiger?

Wait a second. What?

- [horn honking]
- Hey! [yells]

[straining]

No, Dad, no!

[both screaming]

[brakes screech]

[statue creaking]

[Schellenberg]
A secret surveillance camera?

- [Harald] Yes, exactly.
- [Schellenberg] Hmm.

[Harald] Hidden in the lamp
in the hallway.

- And then there were these two men.
- [paramedic] See ya.

A short, round one and a scrawny fella.

With fast food bags over their heads?

Right. They broke in and attacked me.

Right there is where
they knocked me out cold.

And then when I came to,

both the surveillance camera
and those men had vanished.

- No. No, no.
- [Rauch] Mm-hmm.

Miraculously vanished, is that right?

- It all makes sense.
- Hmm.

That's gotta be
how they knew about Margaret.

It's their fault that Anita left me.

Mr. Hessel, do you recall
running into each other earlier today?

At the Kapitän?

No, no.

Were you there long?
How much more did you drink?

Just a small libation
to ease all my grief.

[phone buzzes]

Anita is gone.

[crying] She's gone.

- Rauch here.
- Gone. Anita's gone.

- Okay.
- Anita's gone.

Ms. Rauch, Carlotta Klatt here.

I just wanted to tell you
that someone saw Wanda.

And it was on the same day
she disappeared.

Apparently, she was heading
into the forest.

What? How do you know?

Uh, well, I spoke with a witness.

What kind of witness?

- I'm sorry, I can't tell you.
- Are you kidding?

It doesn't matter. This is new information
that you didn't have.

Mrs. Klatt,
if the information is credible,

then this witness needs to come in
and do a statement.

Have you looked into
the creepy house before?

Sorry, the what?

That big, creepy house there
near Forstplatz.

Online, there are lots and lots
of theories circulating about it.

And I admit that some of them
are far-fetched an' all, but...

Okay, I'm gonna stop you there, 'cause
I've gotta manage actual police business.

And I suggest you don't look
on the Internet for Wanda.

You won't find anything good.

I gotta go.

- Bonehead.
- Bonehead.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[Dedo, muffled] Ole! Ole, please! Ole!

Wake up now, Ole!

Ole. Hey! Ole!

Hey. Are you okay?

Hey!

Are you okay?

Yes, I'm okay.

[un-muffled] I'm sorry.
I don't know what happened.

- Are you hurt?
- It's okay, Dad.

- I'm okay.
- Oh, God.

[statue creaking]

We have to get out of here. Get out.

Okay.

[panting]

[groans]

Oh, sh*t.

Oh, sh*t.

Oh, God.

Oh, God.

[panting]

Wait a minute.

Why is there a cage?

I have no clue. I really don't wanna know.

Give me that thing. Let's get out of here.

Ole, come on!

- You okay?
- [Ole] Yeah.

- [Dedo] Does anything hurt?
- I'm fine, Dad.

[Dedo] sh*t.

{\an8}DAY 0

So, what, did you get lost?

- You're the journalist, right?
- Investigative influencer.

Huh?

Same as a journalist but with more likes.

[scoffs, laughs]

You wanna talk to the King, right?

Yeah.

Then come on.

Come on.

I don't bite, you know.

[Lenka grunts]

[horn honking]

[yells]

[horn honks]

[Lenka straining, groaning]

[horn honks]

[grunting, gasping]

[horn honking]

[Lenka shouting, groaning]

[shouting stops]

[gasps]
