Lily: Cold Snap.

It's such a warm spring day.

Perfect for a walk, right Cumie?

Al: Okay, kids, have a good walk.

And be careful.

I'll be working in the Vansforme

if you need me.

Corky, you're in charge.

Corky: You got it, Dad.

Ooh, I'm loving that warm breeze.

Where's it coming from?

Lily: The weathervane is pointing towards the ‘S'.

That means the breeze is coming from the south.

We get a little closer to my favorite season every day.

I can't wait for summer.

Lily: Hi, Miss Joyce.

Well, hello, kids.

[barking]

[laughing]

Lily: Hey!

Slow down, Cumie.

Ms. Joyce: Hi, Cumulus.

You know,

I always have a treat for my favorite foster pup.

[barks]

Lily: These flowers are so pretty.

What are they?

Ms. Joyce: Those are peonies.

I give them lots of time and care.

These warm days are

just what they needed.

They're so fluffy.

Can I draw a picture of them later?

Ms. Joyce: Of course, Benny.

Hey, where's your mom today?

I promised her some seeds

so she could grow her own peonies.

Oh, Mom's at the plant store.

Corky: Yeah, she wanted to give garden a spring makeover.

[chuckles]

bring out the urge for change.

Anyhoo, just let her know that I've got those seeds

waiting for her.

Benny/Lily/Corky: We will.

Lily: Looks like Cumie's walking me!

Feels like it's getting colder all of a sudden.

Benny: It's getting kind of windy

The breeze was warm this morning,

but now it's really cold.

I wonder why it feels so chilly all of a sudden?

Corky: We should get our jackets we're going to keep walking Cumi

[strong wind]

Benny/Lily/Corky: Woah!

Benny/Lily: Whoa! Corky: Whoa!

Al: Whoa!

Cumulus.

Oh, settle, boy. Settle.

Corky: Careful, Cumie! Come.

Al: Whew!

That was close. Hey!

Lily: Nice moves, Dad.

Wait.

Why do you have our jackets?

Corky: Yeah, Dad,

we were just

coming inside to get them

so we could keep walking with Cumie.

[gasp]

Are you a mind reader, Dad?

Al: No, son.

But great minds do think alike.

Benny: Thanks.

[wind blowing]

It's really getting cold now.

[barking]

[chuckles]

Corky: Okay, okay.

We'll keep walking.

But why is it getting cold?

It was warm earlier.

Al: Well, while preparing for today's forecast,

I noticed the wind changed direction.

We're getting a cold snap.

Lily: A cold snap?

What's that?

Al: A cold snap means it's going to get cold

in a-

[snaps fingers]

-snap!

[snaps fingers]

[snaps fingers]

Benny: Oh, man, I can't snap.

Corky: You'll get it, Benny.

Just keep trying.

Lily: But how does it get so cold, so fast?

[wind blows]

[shivers]

Well,

it's windier and colder than before.

Lily: Oh, and the weathervane's pointing north now.

When we left for our walk earlier,

it was pointing south.

[gasp]

The wind changed direction.

Al: You've got the observation skills of a

great meteorologist, Lily.

You see, when it was warm,

the wind was blowing in warm air from the south.

Then those winds changed

direction and blew in cold air from the north.

So, the wind brings in weather changes

like colder temperatures.

I get it.

Right.

Wind direction is an important piece of information

that helps us predict what the weather's going to be like.

Let's hop in the

Vansformer, and I'll show you what I mean.

Weather is what we observe right now.

This temperature graph shows us today's weather's changing

and fast.

Lily: The line is going down.

That means the temperature's dropping.

Corky: You can say that again.

We felt it get really cold and windy after we saw

Ms. Joyce and her pretty peonies on our walk with Cumie. Oh.

[barks]

Lily: Hey, Dad.

I don't understand.

Aren't the days supposed to get warmer?

Not colder?

Benny: But I wanted it to be warm for Marigold.

Corky: And for me, too.

Al: Oh, it's going to warm up, Benny.

Al: This temperature graph shows

us that we expect the weather to get warmer in the spring.

We know this after keeping track of weather patterns

for many years.

That's called climate.

But sometimes, the weather doesn't stick to the patterns.

So, even though it's spring, it can suddenly get cold?

Al: Yes, and that sudden drop in temperature

can be harmful to plants like the ones in Mom's garden,

because they need warmth to grow and survive.

What about Ms. Joyce's peonies?

Will the cold hurt them, too?

Al: It could.

[gasp]

Lily: Oh, no.

Wait a minute.

Did you say the plants could get hurt?

What about Marigold?

[barks]

Don't worry, Marigold.

I'll keep you warm.

Lily: Marigold is in a pot.

You can bring her inside, Benny.

[sighs in relief]

Phew!

Did you hear that, Marigold?

You'll be nice and warm inside.

But what about Mom's garden?

[gasp]

Benny's right.

We can't move plants, that are in the ground, inside too.

Can we?

Al: I'm afraid not, Lily.

Oh, speaking of Mom, I better text her

and let her know about the cold snap, too.

[phone rings]

A cold snap? Now?

Well, that's unexpected.

Sounds like my garden's in for a surprise.

With all the flowers in my garden,

I'll need these plant covers

to keep them warm through the cold snap.

Al: Okay.

Now, where were we?

Dad, we have to save the plants, remember?

What do we do?

Al: I'm not sure.

Sounds like we have a problem to solve, Hunters.

Lily: Dad's right.

It's up to us to do something about it.

We have to protect the plants.

Benny: Let's do it.

Let's help the plants.

Benny: Aw, yeah! Lily: Yes!

Corky: Whoo-hoo!

Al: Let's go.

Benny: But how are we going to do that?

Lily: First things first.

Come on, Cumie.

Let's get you inside where it's warm.

You too, Marigold.

Benny: Okay, now, what do we do?

Corky: Let's figure out how we're going

to protect Mom's garden from the cold snap.

Al: We need to act fast to keep the plants

warm enough until the cold snap passes.

Lily: Let's go.

There are so many plants.

[wind blows]

[shivers]

Do we need to cover the trees, too?

[chuckles]

No, Benny, the trees pretty much can handle the cold.

But the new spring plants, like our flowers,

are more sensitive to the cold.

Lily: So, we'll focus on flowers and new plants.

[wind blows]

Jackets keep us warm.

Maybe, we can cover the plants with something, too.

Al: Oh, that's it. Plant covers.

My mom used them to protect her plants.

Hey, we might still have a few left in the garage.

Lily: Well, what are we waiting for?

Let's go find them.

Look.

Are these plastic things what we're looking for?

[laughs]

Al: Nice work, Benny.

You found the plant covers.

Uh, do we have enough?

Corky: I don't think so.

Corky: Mom has a lot of plants.

Al: Well, why don't we try these out first,

and see how they work?

Lily: Yeah.

Then we can find something else to use.

Al: See? These are designed

to protect the plants from the cold wind.

Lily: They're really sturdy.

They won't blow away easily.

They fit just right over the plants,

like a cozy home.

Corky: Perfect fit.

Oh, no.

We're going to need a whole mountain

of plant covers to cover this garden.

Lily: It's okay, Hunters.

We can do this.

Let's split up and see what we can find.

Corky and I will look inside.

Al: Benny, I've got an idea.

Why don't we check out Great Grandpa Wallace's workshop?

Lily: This plastic cake cover might work.

What do you think, Corky?

Corky: Hm.

It doesn't weigh much.

Might not stay put with the wind.

Lily: Got it.

We need something heavy enough,

so it won't blow away.

Lily: Look, Corky.

Mom's using this big, heavy jar to grow her basil.

Corky: That's it.

Jars.

Mom has a ton of them, too.

Lily: These are great.

Different sizes for different plants.

Corky: Let's ask Dad if we can test these in the garden.

Lily: I hope these work.

Hm.

Hm.

[chuckles]

Benny: Come find me, Dad.

[muffled giggling]

Huh?

Where could Benny be?

Benny: Roar!

Al: Oh!

Benny: Gotcha!

Al: You got me.

If I can fit in a box,

can a plant fit, too?

Hm.

Good question, Benny.

Let's try them and see if they work.

Can't we just tuck the plants in with a blanket?

That always keeps me warm when it's cold.

Lily and I used this stuff to make a giant fort outside.

Can we build a giant fort to cover the flowers?

Al: Benny, you are thinking like a true engineer.

Let's test it out and see what your sisters found.

Al: Great job, Hunters.

We have some good options here.

Corky: Let's try them all out and see what works.

Lily: Hm. How do I do this?

Nope.

The jar is big, but not big enough for this plant.

Benny: What about the smaller plant, Lily?

Lily: It fits.

Lily: The little jars

work for smaller plants.

Let's see if this size fits over this flower.

Corky: I think this big jar can a couple of these daffodils.

Benny: And I think this can cover that one.

Whoa!

Corky: Good job, Benny.

Now that we put the jars out, let's test the boxes.

Corky: Yeah! Benny: Let's do it!

Lily: Let's go!

Hm.

[wind blowing]

Benny: Whoa!

This rock might hold the box down.

Great idea, Lily.

Benny: Let's try it.

Corky: Yeah!

[grunts]

Yeah.

Corky: Almost done.

But there are still some plants

we haven't covered yet.

Al: We could cover them with this plastic tarp.

Benny: Yeah, we can build them a giant fort.

Benny: Whoa!

Corky: This should keep them safe and warm tonight.

Al: Terrific work, kids!

Yay!

The plants are ready for the cold snap.

[wind blows]

[gasp]

Wait.

What about Ms. Joyce's garden?

Lily: We protected our garden.

But what about hers?

Corky: I know. Mom has extra jars inside.

Benny: Oh! Oh!

And we saw lots of extra boxes in the workshop.

Right, Dad?

Lily: Can we bring our extra plant covers to Ms. Joyce, Dad?

She loves her garden as much as Mom does.

And I want to make sure her flowers are safe.

Al: Lily, that's really thoughtful of you.

Let's do it.

Oh, no.

I don't have enough plant covers.

Benny: We do.

[laughing]

What's all this?

Lily: Hi, Ms. Joyce.

We're having a cold snap,

so we brought something to help protect your garden.

Oh, thank goodness.

I felt it get cold, and I just noticed that I don't

have enough plant covers for all of my flowers.

They don't do well in the cold.

Al: Well, Ms. Joyce, we are here to help our neighbor.

Right, kids? Right.

Corky/Lily/Benny: Right!

Oh, how thoughtful.

[giggles]

Benny: Thanks!

Ms. Joyce: You are all just so wonderful.

Al: Why, thank you.

Lily: Hi, everyone.

Corky: Get ready because we're in the middle of a cold snap.

[snaps fingers]

That means it's getting really chilly.

really fast.

If you look here on this screen, you'll see

the wind has changed direction,

bringing in much colder air from the north.

And the air is so cold that it can hurt plants.

Corky: Luckily, we learned how we can protect our plants

from the cold.

Benny: You can do what we did.

We used these jars to cover and protect our plants.

And we built a plant fort, too.

it's important to be prepared

because weather can change fast.
