At my school,

make jokes about it.
And at my church,
they don't even try.

- How has this experience been?
The prospect of Jess doing
drag, sharing your story.
- Well, I mean, so the prospect
of her doing drag is--
I'm really excited for her.
I think she needs this push.
Like, even just as the days
are progressing,
she's coming out
a little bit more,
which is good, because before,
it was, what am I doing?
I can't believe I'm doing this.
Because she gets so worried
about the impact
that it will have on us,
on the family.
- Right.
How has disclosing that
she's a woman changed her?
- She's more lighthearted.
Like, when I knew Troy, he was
always, like, all business.
But with her, it feels like,
hey, I can have fun with this.
I can be work and family
and Jess and--
You know?
- You're describing,
like, a full person.
- Exactly.
- Like she's finally
able to be a full person.
- Yeah.
- Did you have
any inkling that...
that Jess was there all along?
- None.
- Hmm.
- Yeah.
Definitely surprised.
I'd be crying.
I'd be devastated because
the person I'd been with
for 20 years,
like, no longer existed.
- There's a certain loss,
for sure.
- Yeah.
And it was painful because...
I'd always said, like,
I like manly men, you know?
I like the beards, and I like,
you know, the muscles
and stuff.
And she's like, I'm not a man.
- It's not me.
How is your relationship now?
- We're focused on, you know,
the friendship aspect of it.
I don't think she's ready
to be with anyone right now...
- That's fair.
- Because...
she needs to learn how to love
herself and accept herself
before she can be
with anyone else.
- Yeah.
- The thing that worries me
is that...
she won't love herself
the way that we love her.
- Yeah.
What do you think she needs
to get there?
- Maybe being recognized
as a woman,
you know, from someone
that doesn't know
what she's been through.
- Right.
- Like, getting
that confirmation...

- The drag show, it's
gonna be amazing for her.
Jess is just coming
out of her shell.
It's just helping her be
more confident in who she is.
- You would miss Jess
if she were to bury that again?

- In the city of Tulsa and
in the state of Oklahoma,
the temperature has gone up
significantly.
We've all, in our various
categories--
we're really, I think,
in a wave
of pretty vitriolic pushback.
- And I think at a core level,
at least for me, was to realize
that we are not an island.
- Hello, everyone.
How are you?
I'm Priyanka.
- We got a chance to meet
with the Affirming Alliance,
which is a group of clergymen
and women
from all different
religious backgrounds
who get together and discuss
the importance of acceptance,
a safe space within religion.
- This is super exciting.
I would say that
in my lifetime,
I would never expect to speak
to people like you
about equality, ever.
- In Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- Yeah.
- So what are
the biggest obstacles
that you're facing by doing
the work that you're doing?
- I would say
trying to be inclusive
is kind of a contrary notion
to lots of Christians.
- I come from
an evangelical background.
I come from a Southern Baptist
background.
I can pronounce Jesus
as a four-syllable word.
I can.
[laughter]
- Okay.
- You know?
We need to represent.
This is why I wear
this in public,
so that people know that there
is a safe and sacred space
that they can go.
- How do you deal
with people saying
your religion
is not truly faithful
if you welcome q*eer
and trans people?
- Each one of us,
when we decide
to become welcoming
or affirming congregations,
there's a cost.
- It's our responsibility
to be louder than the hate.
But it's exhausting.
- It's exhausting.
- It's so exhausting, right?
When they are screaming at you,
sometimes you just have to
protect yourself and just say,
like, I need to distance
myself from this.
This is not a safe environment
for me to be in.
- I preached a Pride sermon
this summer,
and we had two drag queens
do the story hour
in our congregation.
We had people leave our church
because people were afraid of,
first of all, being a target,
you know, once the news got out
that they would come
and someone would sh**t up
our congregation.
- So do all of you feel safe?
- We're out
on the front lines, so...
[laughter]
- I'm scared.
I'm terrified.
- The three of us
and our drag daughters
are doing a drag show
inside of a church.
How do you all feel about that?
[laughter]
We didn't even know how we felt
about it, because we're like,
is this gonna be controversial?
Is this gonna be safe?
- Yeah.
- And security is real, right?
We have security at the place
where I work
because the issues are real,
because there are things
that we need to be thoughtful
and mindful about.
- Right.
- So we always have to do--
- We have a responsibility
to the people showing up
to keep them safe.
- And we live in a state
where anybody can be armed
for any reason at any time.
- You are doing,
literally, God's work.

about how you really want
to infuse your two-spirit
Indigenous culture
into your performance.

is to make the Indigenous
and two-spirit community
feel a part of something
and feel represented...

about the meeting
that I attended with you

for everyone as well
because there was, like,

there's so little of you
fighting this big fight.

that hear about the meeting
that they missed

where we have
enough people for us to go out,
be at events,
make sure that we are seen.
And this fall
is a great time for that

role in making sure
that this group,
after we're long gone,
