MOLLY: "What's Good for the Goose."

Got any twos?

Chihja dha'aii!

[snoring]

Got any fives?

[groans]

Yes!

I'm out.

[yawns, panting]

[barks]

You won again!

This is my lucky day!

What's the score?

You have...

Eight points.

And I have three.

Maybe we shouldn't play to , after all.

Let's play to ,,

or until midnight, whichever comes first.

[Daniel sighs]

This-- this is why I spend so much time mowing the grass.

Because it's a nice place to play on a summer day.

[Suki groans, Molly laughs]

Whoa, Suki likes it!

[chuckles]

As soon as Mr. Patak makes benches for us,

we can have our library programs out here.

In fact, there's one program we could do

that doesn't need benches at all,

but it will need a dog.

[Suki groans]

I know just the pup.

Daniel wants Suki to be in a program

where kids come and read books to dogs,

because she's so cute, and relaxed.

Aren't you, Suki?

[barks] [laughs]

Suki will get to hear all these new stories

and learn all these new things.

Right, Suki?

[howls]

And then one day, Suki will pick up a book

and start reading stories back to us.

Won't you, Suki?

[barks]

[laughs]

Our first program is next week.

Doesn't that sound fun?

Not fun! Not fun at all!Ah!

[honks]

Back! Back!

[honks]

[Suki barks] [gasps]

My lunch!

[grunting]

Aw! My pilot bread!

[barks, pants]

[hisses]

Quick!

Come inside!

[continues hissing]

[honks]

[barks]

[squawks]

Phew!

That was close!

What... just... happened?

[sighs]

That goose showed up two days ago

and he's been causing trouble all over town.

[honking]

[honks horn, goose honks]

[honks horn, goose honks]

[honks]

[honks]

[honks]

[honking]

I'm disappointed we can't do the reading program

outside on the lawn,

but this will be a good spot.

Wait.

I should check on Suki.

I bet she's still chasing that goose!

Huh?

Maybe we can do it outside!

Suki chased away the goose.

Look!

[giggles] She's rolling around on the grass in victory.

[Daniel and Molly groan]

Ew.

I don't think that was victory she was rolling around in.

[panting, barks]

It's too bad the reading program was canceled.

It was such a disaster.

Why is that goose being so mean anyway?

The goose was not trying to be mean, Trini.

That's just the way of the dets'ene.

Why is the goose, the dets'ene,

spending so much time at the library?

And how can we get it to go away?

The dets'eneknows why it does what it does.

If you want to understand it better,

you have to think the way it does.

We have to think like a goose?

[bell chimes]

To think like a goose, we need to sound like one.

Honk, honk!

Trini! You're right.

And I have a book that can help.

Ta-da!

What's that?

It's a book that has all kinds of information about birds.

It even plays bird calls.

[ptarmigan calling]

So cool!

That was a daagoo. A ptarmigan.

Whoa.

What other birds are in there?

[rooster crowing]

[laughs]

A rooster!

Is our goose in there?

[goose honks]

[shudders]

Yup, that's it.

Just hearing it makes me want to run.

Does it say why the goose is so mean?

Maybe.

Let's look at the headings.

Maybe here: behavior.

"Canada geese can be highly aggressive

when protecting their territory."

Oh!

Maybe this goose is so mean because it's protecting itself.

But from what?

Let's look under predators

to see what it's afraid of.

"A goose must stay alert because enemies

"could be lurking behind every rock and bush.

Predators include foxes, coyotes, wolves and..."

A-ha! Eagles!

That's it!

We can scare away the goose with an eagle!

We don't have an eagle.

And even if we did,

you can't just throw an eagle at a goose.

[giggles]

We don't need a real eagle.

We have this!

[eagle call]

As soon as we get close enough, play the eagle call,

and the goose will fly away.

[dramatic music]

Uh, Molly?

The goose is coming. [honks]

Molly. Molly?

Play the eagle, Molly. [honks]

[eagle call]

[sound distorts]

Oh no!

The battery is dead!

[honks]

Play the eagle, Molly.

Molly![static feedback]

Um, nothing's working![honks]

[hisses]

Ugh. Wrong one, Molly!

Play the eagle! [static feedback]

Uh...

[makes eagle sounds]

[groans]

[honks]

[whimpers] [honks]

Nice goosey...

[honks]

Good goosey.

[sighs]

That didn't work at all.

And now we have to get my book back.

We can't go back out there!

I can't leave that book out there!

I love that book.

Maybe if we're really sneaky?

Uh-uh.

It's too wide open!

The goose will see us coming a mile away.

Maybe not!

[wheels squeaking]

[squeaking continues]

[squeaking resumes]

[both shriek, goose hisses]

[honking]

[honking continues]

[squawks]

Whew!

[laughs]

We did it!

Whoo!

Why aren't you celebrating?

We got your book.

Yes, but we left more books out there.

We have to go back.

[honks]

[sighs]

What is wrong with that goose?

Does it really think a cart full of books is a predator?

No.

I think it's making sure there aren't any predators

lurking behind it.

Maybe the goose would go away if we put ten carts out there.

[giggles]

Aaha'.

Oh, wait a minute.

Description... food...

Habitat.

Here it is.

"Geese are attracted to parks and golf courses

"and other wide open areas

because it is easier for them to detect predators."

Which means the way to get the goose away from the library

was right in front of us the whole time!

DANIEL: A landscaping plan?

Yes!

Geese don't like to be in places

where predators might be sneaking around.

So if we plant

tall grasses and jak bushes,

the goose will get nervous and go away.

Grandpa Nat helped us design it.

See,

it has pathways and areas for Mr. Patak's benches.

And here will be our own library-grown

blueberries.

Or "blue-brerries" as I think we should call them.

[all laugh]

[Suki barks, goose honks] MOLLY [voiceover]: We transplanted

a lot of bushes and tall grasses and shrubs [honking, barking]

that were already growing in the area.

Everybody helped with planting and watering.

In a few years, it'll be fully grown in.

But for now, it looks pretty good.

And Mr. Patak's benches fit perfectly.

Hi!

And that goose has not come back,

so I think the plan worked.

Shchada'a was right: if you're ever wondering

what a goose is up to, you have to put yourself

in its shoes... I mean flippers.

And you gotta think like a goose.

Honk, honk!

That's all for now!

Nenahaal'yaa!

[panting]

What book do you want to read first, Suki?

[barks]

[giggling]

An excellent choice.

[honking]

Hey, everyone!

Molly here to answer your questions about life in Alaska.

Soraya from Oakland, California, asks,

"What can I do for the birds in my neighborhood?"

My friend in Anchorage has an idea for you.

Hi, Molly!

My name is Blyth and I live in Anchorage, Alaska.

Anchorage is Dena'ina land.

Dena'ina people are native to this land.

They've taken care of this land

and continue to take care of it today.

Today, I'm gonna build a birdhouse with my uncle.

We're building a birdhouse

because the days are short and cold.

The birds need a place to stay.

You can plan by drawing something

or building a model.

A model is a smaller version

of what you plan to make.

And we're done.

Come on, let me show you what we're going to use today.

Clamps, wood, safety goggles,

a drill, hammers, nails, glue,

paintbrushes, and paint.

We're going to get the sides, glue them together.

And to hold them together,

we're going to use clamps.

Clamps are like extra hands

that you use to hold things.

Now we are going to drill a hole in the wood

so we can put a nail in.

Make sure when using tools

you have an adult to help you.

Now for the roof.

I'm so excited!

I think it looks pretty good

but it needs some paint!

The blue paintbrush is good for big areas,

and this foam brush is good to use on tight spaces,

like the roof.

We're almost done!

Now that the birdhouse is finished,

it's time to hang it in a tree.

That one looks good.

I put some seeds

around the house to encourage the birds to stop by.

Look!

Some birds are visiting the house!

Bye, Molly!

Mahsi'choo!

Thanks for asking and see you next time!

MOLLY: "Whistle Work."

[pants]

[Tooey laughs]

TOOEY: Khi!

Put that down!

That's not yours!

[Tooey grunts, Khi growls]

Thanks for watching the shop while I'm gone, Tooey. [barking]

Happy to help, Mr. Patak.

Where are you going?

Sitka.

I'm teaching a class on Indigenous whistle-making.

[barks]

Indigenous whistles?

Yup.

These are Tlingit whistles.

And this is an Alutiiq whistle.

Who knew there were so many kinds?

[chuckles] There are even more in this book.

Alaskan Native Whistle Making.

Mm-hmm.

This weekend, we're making whistles in the Inupiaq style.

Hmm. Where do you blow?

[chuckling]: You don't.

You spin. [panting]

I need a little room for this one.

[barks] Uh-uh.

I know you wanna chew stuff, Khi,

but that whistle isn't for you.

[whirring sound]

[giggles]

It's really loud!

And really different

than the whistles you blow. [whirring slows]

Wow!

I didn't know there were

so many different kinds of whistles.

Indeed!

It's the first whistle I ever made.

It's carved in bone.

Oh wow.

[chuckles]

I'd better get moving.

See you in three days!

[barks]

No, Khi. That's not for you.

I'll make sure nothing happens to your stuff [barks]

while you're gone!

Quyanaqpak! Appreciate it!

[Khi growls]

Khi's got something!

Oh. Nenahaal'yaa,Mr. Patak!

Have a good workshop!

Nenahaal'yaa!

Oops. [soft chuckle]

Almost forgot my whistle.

Hmm... Ha!

[pants, barks]

Khi! Get down!

[barks]

I wonder what he took.

[gasps] The whistle! It's gone!

Are you sure?

Positive!

I put it right here!

[gasps] Is that what Khi had in his mouth?

[growls] He couldn't have chewed up the whistle that fast...

could he?

Well, actually...

Hm...

It's like a museum of chewing.

[Khi barks in the distance]

[gasps] Look!

[barking continues] Khi's digging!

Khi didn't chew the whistle.

He must have hid it!

Either way, we're missing a whistle.

And not just any whistle,

the first whistle Mr. Patak ever made...

[sighs]

Wait!

Mr. Patak's book!

I don't need a book, I need a bone!

[panting]

Molly, where are you going?

To Mr. Patak's!

You can use his book to learn how to carve

a new whistle for him, while I follow Khi

and try to find where he hid the old one.

[panting]

I'll get the book!

And we'll find the whistle.

[barks]

Won't we, Khi?

[sniffing] Khi?

[barks]

Whoa.

[grunting]

[giggles]

Good find, Khi, but not a whistle.

MAURICE: So you need a bone

for your dog?

No, for a whistle.

I need to make Mr. Patak a new one

because Khi hid his old one.

Oh boy...

Yup...

And I only have three days.

Got any bones that looks like this?

Hmm, I might.

Look what I found!

Mahsi'choo,Maurice!

Molly! I got a bone!

[grunts] I got a mitten!

Huh?

[Khi panting]

Whew!

That's it, Khi!

Find the whistle! [whirring sound]

[gasps]

Did Tooey finish making his whistle already?

Nope. Just my mom.

Hi, Mom!

[pants, barks]

Ooh, what'd you find, Khi?

[sighs]

Not a whistle,

but good work!

TOOEY:Okay, Dad. You've split the bone

and cut a teardrop shape using a saw.

The books says to "put the bone in a clamp

and lick it in"?

Huh. So it's extra clean, I guess.

What?

If what you read doesn't make sense,

go back and read it again.

"Put the bone in a clamp and lock it in."

Oh! Lock.

[laughs]

That makes way more sense.

It was already pretty clean anyways.

How's that bone working out?

It's the perfect size.

But I should probably draw a design

before I start carving.

Good idea! Need anything else?

KENJI: Mm, leather string?

I don't believe I have any.

Walter or Mr. Rowley might.

I'll ask.

Mahsi'choo,Maurice.

Thanks!

[panting] Khi!

[pants, barks, sniffs]

Really, Khi?

[barks]

You're sure that's where you want to look?

[sighs]

[Molly grunting]

[sighs]

Mahsi',Khi.

Not a whistle... [barks]

...but someone was probably missing this.

[door opens]

Did you finish the whistle?

No. Did you find the whistle?

No... [barks]

Well, good thing we've got two more days.

[insects chirping]

[birds twittering]

Heard you needed some leather string?

Baasee'!

And I didn't have anything for your whistle,

but uh, I've got snacks!

[soft chuckle] Okay if I watch?

[all laugh]

Sure!

"Now that you've tranced your design onto the bone..."

I only drew it on!

I didn't know I was supposed to hypnotize it on.

Uh, that doesn't make sense.

Maybe I should read it again?

"Now that you've traced the design."

Oh! Traced! Phew!

I did that already.

[Khi panting]

[gasps, shudders]

[stammering]: Are you s-s-sure, Khi?

You didn't put the whistle in there, did you?

[pants, barks]

[ball squeaks]

Whew. Nizii lajj.

Good dog, Khi! [ball squeaks]

Not a whistle, but not a ghost either.

I'm ready to start carving!

[Khi panting]

[grunts]

[barks]

[engine rumbling nearby] Oh!

[gasps]

Did Tooey finish the whistle?

[sighs] Oh.

Hi, Auntie Midge...

[Khi barks]

You got this, Tooey.

Awl.

Mallet.

[trills] Here goes...

[crunching, chewing loudly]

Oh. [chuckles]

[panting]

How could you have hidden the whistle up there?

[Khi panting]

[giggles]

Nizii laii,Khi. You found a ribbon!

[giggles] [engine rumbling nearby]

[gasps]

Tooey's whistle!

Aww...

[engine rumbling loudly]

[Khi pants, barks]

How's the whistle-making going?

Good!

Hopefully I'll finish it tomorrow

before Mr. Patak gets back.

Any luck finding his old whistle?

[sighs] No.

But I found all these treasures!

And we've still got one more day to look.

[insects chirping]

[birds twittering]

[chomping]

Last step.

"String the leather through the whistle."

Khi,

I'm beginning to think we're never going

to find that whistle.

[whirring sound]

What is it this time?

A lawnmower?

A leaf blower?

How about a whistle?

[gasps] You finished it!

I had some help.

Wanna try?

Sure!

Need a little room for this one.

[whirring sound]

[whirring sound]

Uh... huh?

[whirring continues]

It looks like you had a whistle-making workshop

of your own, Tooey.

[clears throat]

[gasps] Your whistle!

We thought Khi hid it!

Yeah! Molly looked for it

while I made you a new one!

No wonder you couldn't find the whistle, Khi.

[giggles]

[panting]

[chuckles]

Good dog, Khi.

You found a lot of lost things,

and got people interested in whistle-making.

Speaking of which, would you teach

a whistle-making workshop here?

I'd love to learn.

Yeah! Then I could learn too!

Of course! But only if

my new whistle apprentice will help.

Really? I'd love to!

Woo-hoo! [giggles]

[whirring, whistling]

Good job, Tooey. Whoa!
