- What's all the commotion, Preston?

Elena's show and tell item is missing. She's awful upset.

- I heard her talking about it this morning on the bus.

I think it belongs to her grandfather?

- Going to belong to someone else really soon

if you three don't find it. - Why us?

- Well, you're detectives right?

She's a good kid, hate to see it.

Of course, by tomorrow everyone will see it

on The Front Page.

- We have a school newspaper? - Newspaper, how old are you?

"The Front Page" is the name of my blog.

- Ms. Rogers, when did you last see Elena's object?

- Show and Tell, it's Culture's Week,

and Elena brought a really neat instrument called a güiro.

- About what time did it go missing?

- I'd say around computer science class.

That was when I was in the lounge, and I heard Elena scream.

- Where's Elena now?

- Took her to Principal Platt's office

to calm her down a little.

Good luck, guys.

- So, we're looking for a güiro.

- What's a güiro?

- This is. - Cool.

- We need to investigate around Mrs. Rogers' desk.

[camera sh**ting]

Whoever took Elena's güiro might have left evidence.

- We need to find Elena to see exactly

what her güiro looks like.

- [Millie] Come on, Mike.

[camera sh**ting]

- What are you doing Mr. Freddy?

- Updating the school security system.

Our cameras have been on the fritz.

- Oh, it would definitely help us if they worked.

- Good luck on fixing that.

- Hey Elena, what happened in show and tell?

[Elena sighs]

- It was a show and tell just like any other day.

I brought in my grandfather's güiro.

He gave it to me before I moved here.

- What's a güiro?

- It's an instrument, like a maraca.

I showed everyone its ridges

and what was left of the red and yellow paint.

I even described how it was very light,

because it is hollow. - So where did it come from?

It comes from where my family comes from, Puerto Rico.

So you're from another country?

- No, Puerto Rico is not a part of another country.

Puerto Rico's actually a part of the United States.

It's a US territory, good question.

- What is a güiro made of? - This one's made of wood,

but some are made from gourds.

- So how do you play it?

[pens and pencils clatter] [students laugh]

[güiro rattles] [bell rings]

- Good job, Elena, great job. [students clapping]

Okay, everybody, let's line up.

Get your books, and let's prepare

to go to computer science, line up.

[güiro clatters]

- [Elena] And that's the last time I saw it.

- So it's just an old instrument.

- I know it's silly,

but it was my lito's, my grandpa's,

and it reminds me of him.

My family left a lot behind

when we moved to Arkansas after the hurricane.

My aunts, my uncles, my grandparents, my cousins,

almost all mi familia stayed.

- Sorry Elena, I don't know what I'd do without my family.

- I just miss them all.

- It's okay, Elena.

- We're going to find your grandfather's güiro, I promise.

[dramatic music continues]

- I've got something I think you'll want to see.

I couldn't find much on the desk, but I did see this.

- Elena did say her güiro was painted red and yellow.

- If it got knocked off the desk,

it could have landed here on the floor.

- It couldn't have had disappeared.

Mrs. Rogers did say the kids

were going to computer science class next.

- So, if they were headed into the hall,

they could have kicked it.

It could have ended up... - Out in the hall.

- Hey, kids! - Hey Mr. Freddy.

- Hey Mr. Freddy.

- Wait, look at this!

- Another yellow scuff! - The paint from the güiro!

- And look at this.

- Whose is that?

[children talking and laughing]

- Hey, Connor, can I talk to Spencer for a minute?

Not playing ball today, Spencer?

- Too hot, I prefer a thinking sport.

- I need you to do some thinking too.

We're investigating, you know.

Elena Dominguez, she lost her grandfather's güiro.

It's an instrument with ridges.

It was important to her and her family.

She really misses it.

What'd you do, Spencer?

- Me and Connor didn't do anything, just minding our own.

But then I saw it on the floor.

It had these weird ridges.

It was wooden, really light.

It looked kind of like a football.

Connor is normally a terrible passer, but-

- Spencer, focus!

- It was like fourth down

and seconds to go.

It was a thing of beauty, the perfect spiral.

[upbeat music] [crowd cheering]

- Spencer Lewis!

[upbeat music continues]

- You left it on a cafeteria table?

[dramatic music]

- Hey, Mr. Larry.

- Hey, who's ready for Tamale Tuesday?

- Today is Friday. - W-w-what?

- We're searching for a missing güiro, a musical instrument,

and we think it was left in the cafeteria.

It's made out of wood and is red, yellow, and hollow.

- And it has ridges all on one side.

- You all talking about my artesian noodle press?

- [All] Noodle press? - It was a beautiful day,

[bright music]

and the sunlight was bouncing off the dishwater

like a streetlight on a bald man's head.

- We don't have time for this. Where's the güiro?

- Well, whatever you call it,

it was a terrible noodle press.

I threw it in the garbage.

- What? [dramatic music]

- Friday...

- Come on, Elena.

- We think your grandfather's güiro

got thrown out in the kitchen trash.

[engine humming]

Sorry we didn't find your güiro in time, Elena.

- It's okay, I just wish I hadn't brought it to school.

- I'm glad you brought it to school. It got me thinking.

I've always lived here in Mulberry Springs,

so have my parents, but my great-grandma moved here

all the way from a city called Munich in Germany.

She sometimes tells me stories about her childhood there,

and it made me want to learn more about Germany.

I guess in a way, her stories and where she's from

are part of who I am too.

- I didn't know anything about Puerto Rico until today.

We're lucky you're at our school.

[upbeat music]

Mr. Freddy loves his music.

[güiro rattling]

- That sound isn't coming from a speaker.

- My grandfather's güiro!

- Hey, Elena, this is yours?

- Where'd you find it?

- I got the cameras back up just in time

to see Mr. Larry tossing it in the trash.

- Thanks, Mr. Freddy, my lito made this

and gave it to me before we moved to Arkansas.

- Oh, your lito must have been a very fine craftsman

and a talented musician.

The güiro's one of the oldest percussion instruments

in Latin American culture.

I played in Guatemala, where I'm from.

and we just want to talk to the community

and get their input on adding an extra trash pickup day.

- People come here to fish, swim, and kayak?

- [Millie] Yep, I picnic here with my grandpa every Sunday.

- [Marta] It looks like garbage.

- [Millie] I've never seen trash here.

- This trash has been driving me crazy all day.

I have been fishing here my whole life

and I have never seen trash like this.

- I wonder how it all got here.

Where did it come from?

- It's a mystery.

- [All] A mystery!

- [Millie] A real life mystery in Mulberry Springs.

- [Marta] We can solve it.

It's what we do.

- If we can find where the trash is coming from and stop it,

I can make a name for myself around town

and then a lot of people will vote for me

when I run for mayor.

It's really unsafe for all the living things here.

Well, Mystery League is on the case.

- [Marta] So where's the trash coming from?

- I can't tell.

Is it coming from that way or that way?

- [Marta] We need a clue.

That's what the Dancing Detective always uses

to solve his cases.

- Look, if the trash is going that way,

that means it's coming from over there.

- A clue.

Let's go.

- The problem's getting worse.

- [Millie] The trash is a danger

to plants, animals, and people.

- Come on, I think we're getting closer.

[upbeat whimsical music]

- [Millie] The garbage is coming from the park trash cans.

- [Marta] Let's pick it up.

- [Millie] There's too much of it.

- A little help here?

- There are definitely not enough trash cans

for all this garbage.

- And without enough trash cans,

it'll be too hard to keep the creek clean.

- Why is this happening?

- And how can we stop it?

- To solve the mystery, we need to learn more.

Like why there aren't enough trash bins

for the trash people make?

- Learning is my specialty.

Do you know what time it is?

- Yes uh, : AM.

- Well yeah, but it's also research time.

- And also time to solve the mystery time.

- [Marta] It turns out

there used to be more garbage cans in the park,

but when some got damaged, they were never replaced.

- And the few cans that are there should have lids

so the trash won't blow away.

The bins need to be heavier so they won't tip over.

- [Marta] So, what do we do with all of this?

- My mom said this is a public park.

The town owns it and is responsible for it.

She says we should get attention of our city council.

- [Marta] How do we get the attention of the city council?

- [Millie] We need to get public support.

The town has to be with us.

- How do we get public support?

- One way is to have people sign a petition.

It's a way for people in the community

to ask the government to change something.

- And then we can bring that to the city council.

- We don't have much time.

The next city council meeting is in a few days.

- Let's start a petition

to get more garbage and recycling cans for our park.

- But how do we make people sign a petition fast?

- We could host a creek cleanup

and then invite the whole town to help clean up the creek

and then ask them to sign.

- And I know how to spread the word quickly.

Mockingbird Creek is sick.

There's trash all over it.

- [Topanga] Well, I went on a business trip.

- Sorry, hold on.

- [Topanga] There's so many beautiful places.

[muffled speaking]

- [Mike] It won't turn off.

You had green eggs for breakfast?

- It's not only ugly,

it's dangerous for the plants and animals

who need this creek

and it's unhealthy for all the people who want to enjoy it.

- [Marta] Yes, this is terrible,

but there is something the town can do about it.

- [Millie] There is,

but there aren't enough trash cans in Mockingbird Creek Park

and the ones we do have are tipped over

and some don't have lids on them.

- When they're blown over,

the wind carries the trash into the creek.

- To keep this from happening,

we need new trash and recycling bins with lids

that won't tip over.

Over Mulberrians have signed this petition.

They want new bins to keep our creek clean and safe.

- Really wonderful work, kids.
