Then, Ev went and he was super fast.

But then he got stuck!

[Gasp] What happened next?

Mr. Santiago told him to grab the green holds and he did.

He reached the line on the wall.

[Trills]

And Stu got to go too, and he climbed all the way to the top. [Trills]

Mr. Santiago said it was the fastest he'd ever seen done.

[Trills]

[Chuckles] Alright, Stu!

How'd you do?

I...I didn't climb.

I really wanted to! But--

But THAT'S when your stomach started to hurt?

Were you feeling a little scared to climb?

And maybe that's why you got the stomachache?

It's okay to be scared.

But you shouldn't let it stop you from trying something new.

The first time I tried diving into a pool, I was so scared, I didn't do it.

What'd you do?

I tried again and dove right in.

And every time I tried, I got less and less afraid until I wasn't scared anymore.

How am I going to climb the wall, though?

It's so tall, and I've never climbed that high before!

When I'm scared, I use my fire breathing to help me relax.

then let out one looong breath, like a fire-breathing dragon.

So, whaddaya think of my latest invention?

What am I supposed to do with ‘em?

They're for finger painting, Ev.

I used old toothbrushes, paint brushes and a piece of sponge

to make Finger Paint Gloves!

This way you don't get your hands messy when you're finger painting!

Hmm...But isn't getting your hands messy the FUN PART of finger painting?

Oh.

Yeah.

Oh well...

Maybe I can think up a way to improve them

or turn them into something else...?

We came up with an idea for our Black History Month project.

It's all about Black inventors who created things we use every day.

And since you're our FAVORITE INVENTOR, Lyla.

We wanted YOU - and Everett, to help us test out our new idea.

Well, since I AM an inventor, I guess I can help you.

Great! The game is played with riddles.

And raps.

I give you a riddle that's a clue to an invention that's used every day.

Then you search around the room--

or the building or wherever we are--

--until you find the invention.

And once you find it--

I do a rap all about the inventor and that's why we call our game

R-R-Rappin' Riddles!

Listen closely, now.

I'm usually round, turning up here and there.

You use me every day if you're going somewhere.

Coming in or going out, it's in your hands to figure me out.

It could be a window... Yeah!

you can come in or out through windows.

Ummm I don't think people do a lot of coming in and out windows on the fourth floor.

Oh yeah and the clue said, “Usually round.”

Windows are not usually round, unless you're on a ship.

[Gasp] What about a door?

[Trills] They're not usually round,

but revolving doors spin around when you go in or out of a big building!

Yeah, it's gotta be a revolving door!

Is it?

Ain't no revolving doors in here.

Good guess though.

Hmm...

[Liana]: Keep going, you're SO close!

Oh...maybe it's in the hall? [Liana]: [Squeals]

Awwwww! [Grunt]

Hold up, Liana was just excited for a second.

Which could mean we passed what she got excited about...

The riddle said “coming in or going out--” “--it's in your HANDS!”

And it's usually round. Ah-ha!

[Giggles] His name was “Dorsey,” so we should've called it the “DOOR-SEY”

Yeah, then maybe more people would know he invented it.

Anyway, in , Osborne Dorsey got a patent for the locking doorknob.

What's a patent?

If you invent something, you apply to the government for a patent,

which lets the world know you're the inventor.

Then, if anyone else wants to use it, they have to get your permission and pay you.

Soooo, if I make a useful invention, I could get a patent and get paid for it?

[Gasp] Like my finger-painting gloves!

Uh, do you really think they're useful?

Not yet, but when I make some improvements, they will be!

Yeah, without knowing if we were getting closer or further away from the invention,

we could've kept searching forever.
