[Lyla]: Miss Emmaline's MagicTrunk

Hope you enjoyed your breakfast.

Here's your change.

It was delicious as usual, and here's a tip for you, Jia.

Thanks!

Miss Emmaline!

Stu's got the book you left on the table.

Oh, thank you, Lil' Blue guy!

[Trills]

And here's a tip for you, too.

[Trills]

Oh wow!

How'd you do that, Miss Emmaline?

It's a simple magic trick using sleight of hand.

Slice of hand?

No, honey, SLEIGHT of HAND.

It's easy if you do it step by step.

Watch.

Step one, I hide the coin in my hand.

Can you see the coin?

No...

That's because when I hold my hand out like this,

you can't see that I have palmed the coin-

You see how I hide it here between these two fingers?

Uh-huh.

Step two, I reach behind your ear with the coin hidden.

Step three, I bring my hand back out holding the coin in my fingers,

and it looks like I just pulled it out of the air with magic.

That's what you call, SLEIGHT of HAND. [laughs]

Oooh.

Can I try?

Sure, just go step by step.

Okay.

So...step one, I hide the coin in my hand like this?

Good, but make sure we can't see the coin.

Oh yeah, right, I have to keep my palm facing down.

Then step two, I reach for Stu's ear like this.

[Trills]

Step three, show the coin, like magic!

[Trills]

[Lyla] [gasp]

Way to go, Lyla! [giggles]

Miss Lyla, you are a fast learner.

Can you teach me more magic tricks?

If it's okay with your parents,

come on by my place after lunch and I'll show you a trick or two.

[chuckles] Toodle-loo!

[gasp] Mom!

Dad!

Can I go to Miss Emmaline's after lunch!

[Trills]

Miss Emmaline!

It's me and Stu! [Trills]

My mom and dad said we could come over.

Come on in, Lyla!

You too, little blue friend.

Hi, Miss Emmaline. [Trills]

[gasp] Wow.

Is that you, Miss Emmaline?

Mm-hm.

Back when I was performing magic as Emma the Great.

What...that's so cool! [Trills]

[giggle] How'd you get to be a magician? [Trills]

My Papa used to do magic, and he taught me.

So, when I was about your age, I started doing little magic shows for my friends.

Oooh!

There weren't many lady magicians back then, but I kept at it,

started creating my own magic tricks and soon I was doing shows all over the world -

me and my magic trunk.

Magic trunk? [Trills]

Yoo-hoo, magic trunk, come out, come out!

[Trills]

Ooh! [Trills]

Whoa, this is a real magicky place, Stu! [Trills]

[giggles] [pulling efforts] [Trills]

Thanks Stu.

[gasp] Have you been to all these places, Miss Emmaline?

China, France, Ghana?

[gasp] And even Jamaica-

That's where my mom was born!

Me and my magic trunk have been all over the globe.

[excited gasp] [Trills]

Let's see, there's my wand, my trick playing cards,

a bottle of disappearing ink, invisible thread...

My magic top hat...

Whoa! [Trills]

Looks like Lil' Blue Guy wants to do some magic, too.

Miss Emmaline, can you teach me some magic tricks?

Please!

Then I can do a magic show and go all over the world just like you!

Well...I don't know. Making magic takes a lot of practice.

I'll practice. I promise.

I'll practice a lot, then I'll practice practicing even after I practice!

Okey-doke.

[chuckles] I'll teach you a quick trick, step by step.

IF you can make it work on your own - THEN I'll teach you another one.

Yes! [Trills]

So, you ready to learn a new magic trick?

Ready! [Trills]

Okey-doke.

Two of the most important things a magician can learn are sleight of hand--

Like with the trick when I hid the coin in my hand?

Exactly.

The other most important thing a magician must learn is misdirection.

Mis-direction?

Mm-hm.

That's when you get your audience to look in one direction,

while you're making the magic happen in a different direction.

[Trills] Ooooooh...

Watch how I do it step by step and you'll see.

Step one, you tap on the table to show it's solid.

Step two, you say, “I'm going to make this ball magically go through the table"

Uh huh.

Step three, I place the cup over the ball.

Step four, take a sheet of paper and crumple it to fit over the cup.

Got it.

Step five, I lift the cup and point to the ball

so the audience will look to see it's still there on the table.

See?

Uh huh. [Trills]

Step six, I say the magic words: Plakata, plakata, wooketty-wooooo--

CHAAAA!!! [Trills]

Oh no, something went wrong.

The ball didn't go through the table.

Aw... [Trills]

But wait...

What happened to the cup?

Oh...hmm?

[gasp] Goodness gracious!

The CUP went through the table instead of the BALL! [gasp]

What?!

Is it a magic cup?

Remember, it's not the prop that's magic, Miss Lyla.

The magic is what you DO with the prop.

And that's where misdirection comes in.

Hmm...How?

Remember when I lifted the cup and pointed to show you that the ball was still there?

Uh-huh.

So, while I directed you to look at the ball, I dropped the cup into my lap.

[gasp] [laughs]

Oooh. [Trills]

So, you made me look at the ball so I wouldn't see what you did with the cup?

Exactly.

I MIS-directed your attention,

so you still believed the cup was under the paper.

Oooh, that's sneaky!

No.

That's magic! [Trills]

Ohh.

Let me try!

Okay now, let's do it step by--

--Step!

Now, I'm going to make this ball magically go through the table.

Okay...

You see, the ball is still there, right?

Right.

Now I say the magic words.

Plakata, plakata, wooketty-woooo!

Chaa!

[gasp] Did it work?

[gasp] Oh no, the ball didn't go through the table.

Oh... that's okay.

Try again.

But wait...where's the cup?

Oh, yeah?

Hmmm... [gasp] Whoa!

The cup went through the table!

[gasp] [Trills]

No way! Get out!

You did NOT just do that, Lyla.

Am I ready to do a magic show now?

Hmmm...I think you need a real showstopper that'll leave ‘em mystified.

I'll show you what I mean.

Alright, watch carefully.

Whoa! [Trills]

How did--?

You just--!

You can float off the ground?!!!

It's the illusion of levitation.

If you can figure out the steps to making it look like you're floating off the ground,

then you'll be ready to do a show.

Yay!

Just remember two of the keys to making magic tricks work.

Sleight of hand and mis-direction!

C'mon, Stu! [Trills]

Thanks, Miss Emmaline! [Trills]

So...it looked like Miss Emmaline was floating up off the floor.

[Trills]

But she kept the blanket in front of her the whole time.

[Trills]

So the only thing we could really see rising from the ground were her shoes...

You can only see my shoes, right?

[Trills]

Good.

But both of Miss Emmaline's feet were floating off the ground.

At least it LOOKED LIKE both of her feet were off the ground.

That's impossible.

[Trills] Hmm...Unless... [gasp] wait a minute!

What if I keep one foot on the ground, but it LOOKS like both feet are floating?

[Trills]

[gasp] Lemme try something.

Perfect!!!

[Trills]

I'll take this foot out of my shoe,

and then tie my shoes together with this rubber band, and... Ha-ha!

Now when I lift one foot, it looks like BOTH feet are floating!

That's the sleight of hand, er, foot.

And if I tell the audience to keep their eyes on my shoes!

That's the MIS- direction!

Yes! I got it!

Step one - hold the blanket in front so you only see my feet.

Step two - put my left foot back here where you can't see it.

Step three - say the magic words, “Plakata, plakata, POW!”

Step four - lift my right foot and it looks like I'm levitating!

Yes! [Trills]

You did it, Miss Lyla!

Now, I'm gonna teach you one last trick -

a real showstopper that you and Little Blue Guy can do together,

then you'll be ready to do your very own magic show!

[Everyone]: [cheering]

And now, for my final trick, I, Lyla the Great,

will mystify and dazzle you with the help of Stu!

[Trills]

Stu, hop into the magic top hat. [Trills]

[Trills]

And now...watch closely as I make Stu disappear!

Plakata-plakata-SHA- BOOM!

WAAAA-LAAAA!

[gasps]

Oh no, Stu! Where's Stu?

He's right there!

[Trills]

[cheering]

[Luke]: Luke's Puppy!

[giggles] Dad, c'mon!

We wanna sh**t some hoops before all the courts are taken.

[Trills] I'm coming, I'm coming!

C'mon! [laughter]

Let's go! [Trills]

Hold on!

Is that a--

[gasp] A puppy!!

AWWW, she's so cute! [Trills]

Aww, where did you come from?

Huh, she doesn't have a tag with a name or phone number...

Maybe her owner's around somewhere...

Excuse me! Did anybody lose their puppy?

[laughter] She's upside down!

Awww, what are you doing? What are you doing?

I think maybe she wants you to rub her belly.

Oo oo, can I, Dad?

[laughs] Sure.

She seems like a good puppy, yes you are!

I don't think this pup's family is anywhere nearby...

[chuckle] [sneeze]

Maybe Arfie is lost!

“Arfie”?

That's what I named her, because she likes to-- [barking]

[laughing] Yup!

I'm gonna call the Animal Shelter.

Arfie's family might be there looking for her.

Awww. [Trills]

[laughter]

Shelter's closed for the day.

I guess we should take her inside and... [sneeze]

woo...figure out what to do with her.

C'mon, little buddy.

[sneeze] Woo!

Sorry Arfie.

[barks] [Trills]

You found a puppy?

No, Arfie found ME!

When she rolls onto her back, it means she wants a belly rub.

[Trills]

We checked, but she didn't have a phone number on her collar.

And there was no one around to claim her.

So we can be Arfie's family now! Right?

[Trills]

Awww, she's such a cute likkle doggie, yes, hi.

But I'm sorry Lukey, we can't keep her.

Your dad has dog allergies. Arfie makes him sneeze.

[stuffed up] Whaaat? Nooo! No, it's fine. I don't -

[sneeze] I don't mind [sneeze] at all!

[big sneeze]

[sniffles] It's fine.

[giggles] Look at her tail!

What are you telling us, Arfie?

I know this one!

When a dog's tail wags like that, it means she's happy.

See, Mom, Arfie's happy to be here with us!

[sighs]

Ok, Arfie can stay for one night, while we try to find her family.

Yeah! Yes!

Just one.

Then, we have to take her to stay at the shelter.

[stuffy] And while she's here, you two, and Stu,

need to help take care of everything she needs.

Okay! We will! [Trills]

Now, how about we make some ‘Found Puppy' posters to put up around the neighborhood.

Maybe her family will...

[sneeze] ...see them.

Oh, and write my phone number on there so whoever lost Arfie can call me.

On it!

Right, Luke?

I guess so.

Come on, Mr. Sneezy, let's see if we can find your allergy medication.

[barking] OK, what should the poster say?

Hmm...How about, “Lost Puppy Found by Luke Loops Who Will Keep Her and Give Her a Good

Home and Lots of Love If You Don't Want Her Anymore”?

Or...how about “Puppy Found”?

That's good.

What do you think, Mom?

Yeah...looks good!

Hey Stu, please use this paper and make ten exact copies of this poster.

[Trills] Go, Stu, go!

[Trills]

Stu's pretty fast.

Right Arfie?

Where'd she go?

[gasp] You okay, Arfie?

Do you need a belly rub?

I don't think she wants belly rubs right now.

She's not rolling on her back.

And look, her tail isn't waggin' anymore.

Does that mean she's sad?

Okay, Baby Brucey.

Let's go do our puzzle.

[gasp] Who's this cutie patootie?

This is Arfie! We found her outside.

Well, I think you better take her back outside.

How come?

If a puppy whines by the door and keeps looking at you,

it's a signal that usually means one thing.

They need to go to the bathroom!

Oh!

Follow me, Arfie!

Uh, not OUR bathroom, Luke!

Oh, right, I'll take her outside.

Grab her leash, and we'll take her out together.

Leash? We don't have a leash!

And Arfie can't wait!

Quick, what else could we use as a leash?

Uh, uhh, some ribbon!

But that's not very strong.

Or a belt!

Which I don't have.

Wait!!

Can we use my shoelaces?

We can tie ‘em together to make a leash!

Perfect!

We'll tie them tightly together and to Arfie's collar!

Mom, Dad!

Can me, Liana, and Luke take Arfie for a walk and put up the posters?

[Lydia]: Yep! [Louis]: Be safe!

Thanks!

Phew!

Made it! [Trills]

Her tail's wagging.

That means she's happy again!

Whoa, Arfie, you're strong!

Now where should we put up our “Found Puppy” posters?

Places where Arfie's family could see them.

Like the diner's windows and front door.

And Phan's Hardware.

Lots of people pass there every day.

How about the pizza place--

-- and the bike shop.

And the hair salon.

Argh...Lyla!

I think Arfie's telling us to go this way!

Hurry! [Trills]

[laughing]

[Trills] [barking]

[Trills]

Oh, no! What does Arfie need now?

She's not rolling on her back to say she wants a belly rub.

And she's not waiting at the front door to go out.

She's making a whining sound, her tail is wagging...

...And she keeps looking at your carrot.

Maybe...

[Luke]: ...she's hungry?

What can we feed her?

Maybeeee...

puppy food?

We figured Arfie would be getting hungry soon, so we bought her some food.

And good news, Arfie, I'm not sneezing anymore!

See?

No sneeze!

Yay, Dad!

It's like Arfie's already part of our family!

Here you go, Arfie.

[Trills]

I just can't believe no one has called about Arfie yet.

But we still have a little time.

Speaking of time...

It's bed time for you three. [Trills]

Can Arfie sleep in my bed?

[chuckles] Nope, Arfie got a bed of her own.

Just a plain old box?

That's not comfy.

These blankets will help.

There! Now that's a puppy bed.

What d'you think, Arfie?

I know that signal.

It means she's [yawn] tired.

[laughs] [baby talk gibberish]

C'mon, you three.

Uh huh. Bedtime for you too.

Goodnight you two.

‘Night, Dad. [Trills]

Goodnight!

Sweet dreams.

[dog whining] [barking]

Why aren't you sleeping, Arfie?

I think she might be telling us she doesn't like the dark.

How about we leave a little light on tonight?

Okayyy.

Anything for my Arfie.

Alright. Goodnight again.

[barking]

Mooooom!

What now???

Oh Arfie.

That sound means she's still lonely, Mom.

Can I please, please, please get in with her?

[laughs] You do not fit, Lukey.

Hmm...But maybe Stu will? [Trills]

Okay Stu, would you like to sleep in the box with Arfie?

[Trills]

Good night you two, puppy and Stu.

Maybe we'll hear from Arfie's family tomorrow.

And if we don't, we can be Arfie's family!

[Trills]

Anyone called for Arfie yet, Mom?

No, Not yet.

I'm glad we get to keep you longer!

[barking] [giggles]

Uh-oh, she's back at the door with her tail down, looking at me and whining.

That signal means: potty time!

Oh! I'll get Brucey, and we'll go for a walk together.

[Trills]

I'm happy no one called for Arfie yet.

I love having a puppy!

Me, too.

It's nice to have a pet best friend.

Right Brucey-Woosey?

[Trills]

Well, since no one called -- I guess that means we can take the flyers down!

Mom, we're back!

Can we go to the pet store and get Arfie a real leash now?

We won't need to.

Arfie's family called while you were out and now they're

Genie D!

[laughing] Luke, we were so worried when she got lost.

Miss Jess?

Thank you so much for taking care of Genie D.

Genie D?

That's her name because of how smart she is, like a genius dog.

Watch!

Sit!

Down!

Woah!

Roll over!

Good girl!

[barking] Oh, wow! [Trills]

I didn't know she could do all that!

But did you know that if she whines by the door and stares at you with her tail

down, then she needs to use the bathroom?

Yeah!

I was taking her out to potty yesterday when she got away.

[Trills] [laughing]

You know, maybe Luke can puppy-sit for us sometime?

He seems to love Genie D almost as much as we do.

C'mon, Genie D, c'mon!
