You can do it, Robin. Flap your wings and fly through the air!

ARI: Just don't look down. Ready... set... fly!

KIDS: [laugh]

ELINOR: Playing birds is fun.

ARI: What's that, Robin?

Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. Yeah, flying IS a lot of work.

OLIVE: Aw, is Robin tired? Maybe he needs to rest a little.

he'd love to rest. But where? ARI: Chirp, chirp! He says

ELINOR: I know... let's make him a nest!

Nests are great places for baby birds to rest, while their Mama takes of them.

ARI: Great idea!

OLIVE: So, Mamma Ari - how do we build a nest for Robin?

ARI: I'm not sure. Hmm...

I think nests are made of twigs.

ELINOR: Yeah, and they're always up in a tree.

Let's find a tree for our nest.

OLIVE: Hmm... that's too high.

ARI: Chirp! Chirp! Hmm...

ELINOR: How about this one?

OLIVE: Nice and strong. Perfect for a nest!

ARI: Phew. I could use a rest, myself.

OLIVE: Me too. Too bad we're too big to fit in a nest.

KIDS: [laugh]

ELINOR: [gasp] Not if we make a really BIG one.

ARI: Big enough for all of us? That would be SO great!

OLIVE: Yeah, like a bird clubhouse! We can call it the Bird Friends Nest!

ELINOR: I like it. So, we're going to need a LOT of twigs...

Come on!

OLIVE: Uhhhm.

I'm not sure about this. Being up high makes my knees wobble sometimes.

ARI: Are you kidding? Our nest is going to be great!

I just... need to... get comfortable.

Oh! Still poky. And kind of small...

OLIVE: Hmm. How're we going to build a nest big enough for all three of us to fit inside?

ARI: You mean, all four... of us.

ELINOR: Right. Well, we can't give up.

We're the Bird Friends! We'll figure it out.

All we need is more twigs!

ARI: Whoa. A hummingbird!

ELINOR: Where is it going?

ARI: I'll find out.

Hummmmmm...

OLIVE: [giggle] Ari, what are you doing?

ARI: Hummmmmm....

I'm trying to blend in so I'm humming like a hummingbird!

Whoa... It's building a nest!

ELINOR: Really? What does it look like?

ARI: It's round. And soft. Like it's made from...

dandelion fluff!

ELINOR: It's made of fluff? nests were made out of twigs. Not twigs? I thought all bird

ARI: Guess not. But the fluff looks really comfy. Not poky, like ours.

ELINOR: Well, maybe our nest doesn't have to be made of twigs.

OLIVE: Yeah! If hummingbirds can add fluffy stuff to their nests, then so can we.

ARI: Let's get more twigs and fluffy things too!

[Duck quacks loudly] OLIVE: Whoa!

Sorry. After you, Ducky.

[gasps]

Elinor, Ari, come see!

ELINOR: Is that a nest?!

ARI: It can't be. It's on the ground.

Maybe it fell out of a tree.

Hmm... There are no trees over us.

OLIVE: The mama duck must have made it on the ground on purpose.

ARI: Why?

ELINOR: I think I know. Putting a nest down here lets them get to the water faster.

OLIVE: Oh, yeah! Ducks love to swim.

ARI: That makes sense. This way, they can get to the water real quack!

Get it? Instead of ‘quick'? Because they're ducks.

KIDS: [giggle]

ARI: Wasn't me. This is ME!

It's a woodpecker! ELINOR: Ohhh.

OLIVE: Make that two woodpeckers.

ELINOR: [gasp] And their chicks!

OLIVE: Are they inside a tree?

ARI: That doesn't look like a nest.

ELINOR: That is sooooo interesting...

FARMER BEAR: [chuckles]

OLIVE: Hi, Farmer Bear.

FARMER BEAR: Oh, hello you three! I was just doing some birdwatching.

OLIVE: So are we!

ELINOR: Birdwatching AND nest-watching. We're getting lots of great ideas!

FARMER BEAR: Hmm... Ideas for what?

ELINOR: We want to build a nest that's big enough for all three of us.

ARI: Chirp! Chirp!

ELINOR: I mean - four of us. So we're observing real bird nests to get ideas.

ARI: Yeah. We thought all nests were made from hard twigs,

until we saw a hummingbird use dandelion fluff.

OLIVE: And we thought the nests had to be up on tree branches.

But then we saw a duck make hers on the ground.

ELINOR: It turns out there are all different kinds of nests!

FARMER BEAR: That's true! Different birds make different kinds of nests.

I've seen kingfishers burrow into the side of riverbanks.

And do you know what swallows use to make nests? Mud!

ARI: A mud nest? Now that is cool!

OLIVE: And messy. Let's stick to twigs and fluff.

ELINOR: [giggle] Yeah. But we still need a LOT more to

make our clubhouse big enough for the four of us.

FARMER BEAR: Hmm... You know, there's a nest back at my farm

that's pretty interesting too. Want to see?

KIDS: Yeah!

FARMER BEAR: Come on, I'll show you!

ARI: Uhhh, I thought we were going to see a birds' nest.

FARMER BEAR: We are... it's up in the hayloft.

Climb carefully, now. And let's keep our voices low.

[owl hoot]

ELINOR: [gasp] An OWL! [whispers] I LOVE owls.

[owl hoot]

OLIVE: Oh, and baby owlets!

ARI: Waaait. Is that their nest?

OLIVE: But there's no mud or twigs, or dandelion fluff or anything!

FARMER BEAR: That's because owls don't really ‘build' nests.

They re-use places that already exist, like barn rafters,

or hollow trees, or even old nests made by other birds.

ARI: That's like the woodpeckers we saw. They carved a tree hole to make a nest.

OLIVE: Wow. Different birds really do make different nests.

[owl hoot]

ELINOR: That was AMAZING! [giggles] Thanks for showing us the owls, Farmer Bear.

ARI: Yeah! Who knew there were so many different ways to make a nest?

FARMER BEAR: Yep. Every bird has different needs so their nests are different too.

ELINOR: Maybe we should make the nest that WE need.

It doesn't have to be made of twigs... they're too poky.

ARI: Right. We can use something soft.

OLIVE: And our nest doesn't have to be up in a tree. We can make it on the ground.

ELINOR: And we can re-use things, like owls do.

[gasp] We can build it right here in the barn!

Oh— if that's okay with you, Farmer Bear?

FARMER BEAR: [chuckles] Are you kidding? This'll be a HOOT!

[owl hoot]

ALL: [giggles]

ELINOR: Let's make our nest!

FARMER BEAR: [chuckles]

ELINOR: Our Bird Friends Nest is finished!

OLIVE: But it's nothing like we thought it would be.

ELINOR: Different birds have different kinds of nests.

ARI: Yep! And this is our kind of nest. Right, Robin?

KIDS: [giggles]

ELINOR: And just like real birds, we made it to have everything we need.

And that means...

Having room for guests.

FARMER BEAR: Whaddaya think? Can I join you?

KIDS: [giggles]

KIDS: Sure! Hop in!

FARMER BEAR: Hooo Hooo Hooo! [chuckles]

KIDS: [laughs]

ELINOR: "Foody Fuel"

Who's ready to go exploring? ARI: Hey Olive and Elinor!

This bat!

KIDS: [giggles]

OLIVE: Hi Ari! We just have to wait for Koa.

ELINOR: I wonder where he is?

KOA: What's up?

ELINOR: [gasp] Koa! You made it!

Now our Exploring Club can begin!

Is everybody ready for today's super special mission?

ARI: You bet. Wait... What's our mission again?

KOA: Lizard watching! They're soo chill.

ELINOR: My mom says lizards should be easy to find today, since it's so sunny out.

KOA: Lizards love the sunshine.

OLIVE: Did everyone pack a lunch? It's gonna be a long exploring day.

ARI: I got mine! A peanut butter and pickle sandwich. And raisins.

OLIVE: I have... a tofu wrap, apple slices, and yogurt!

Carrot-ball pitas! And grapes! ELINOR: And I've got-- oh!

ARI: Nice! How about you Koa?

KOA: I packed my favorite. Mac 'n soy cheese!

Kids: Ooooh!

ELINOR: I really like mac 'n cheese too.

KOA: I don't just like mac why I don't eat anything else. 'n cheese, I love it! That's

ELINOR: Come on! That can't be the ONLY thing you eat.

KOA: It is! My mom made a bunch last week,

so now I eat mac 'n cheese for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Snacks too!

From now on, it's the only thing I'm EVER gonna eat.

OLIVE: Won't you get tired of eating the same thing all the time?

KOA: How can anyone get tired of mac 'n cheese? It's delicious!

ARI: I mean he's not wrong. So, ready to go?

KIDS: Yeah! [laughter]

ELINOR: I don't see any lizards around here.

KOA: Maybe we should look at the top of the hill. Lizards love to sit in the sun.

ARI: Great idea, Koa. Race ya to the top!

KIDS: [panting]

KOA: [panting]

ELINOR: Phew! This is a really big hill.

OLIVE: I've got just the thing to give us energy!

ELINOR: Apple slices! Thanks Olive!

KOA: [panting]

ARI: Ahhh... Refreshing!

KOA: No thanks.

OLIVE: Are you sure? They're crispy and delicious!

KOA: Mm-mm. I only eat mac 'n cheese.

KOA: [stomach gurgles]

ELINOR: Maybe we should split up to look for lizards.

OLIVE: Good idea!

KIDS: Exploring Club... Go!

OLIVE: Pssst! Over here! I found a lizard!

KIDS: Whoa! That's so cool.

ELINOR: Okay, Exploring Club! Time to observe!

ARI: This lizard has smooth scales...

KOA: Shiny too!

OLIVE: Smooth, shiny scales...

KOA: Look! The lizard's doing something!

Whoa! That's one hungry lizard!

OLIVE: Yeah. [gasp] And now we know what lizards eat. Ants!

ARI: Watching that lizard eat is making me kind of hungry.

KIDS: Yup! Me too!

OLIVE: We can eat lunch under that tree!

KOA: Uh oh.. I think I forgot my lunch at the clubhouse.

OLIVE: Oh no!

ELINOR: That's okay. You can have some of our food, Koa.

ARI: Yeah. We have lots to share.

KOA: No, thanks.

OLIVE: Are you sure? This wrap is really yummy.

KOA: Oooh... It does look good... But I only eat mac 'n cheese.

ELINOR: Are you sure you're sure?

KOA: Yep. It's mac ‘n cheese or nothing.

ARI: Okay... if you say so.

KIDS: Mmm! Yum!

KOA: [Stomach gurgles] [Sigh]

ARI: Ahh. There's nothing better than an exploring mission lunch.

KIDS: [giggle]

ELINOR: Whoops!

Hey! I found another lizard!

OLIVE: Awesome! KIDS: Whoa!

ARI: What's it gonna do?

It ate an ant! Just like the other lizard.

KOA: Wow. Ants must be lizards' favorite food...

[gasp] Just like mac 'n cheese is mine!

Why eat anything but your favorite food, right lizard buddy?

[Stomach rumbles loudly]

ELINOR: Sounds like you've got the tummy rumbles Koa. I get those sometimes too.

OLIVE: A snack will help them go away. We have plenty leeeeeft.

KOA: Nuh uh. Lizards only eat ants, and I only eat mac 'n cheese.

OLIVE: I guess, if you're really sure...

KOA: Let's find more lizards to observe!

[drumming in distance]

ELINOR: Do you hear that?

[drumming]

KOA: Is it a lizard?

ELINOR: No... [gasp] It's music!

[drumming]

[drumming]

KIDS: Señor Tapir!

SEÑOR TAPIR: Hola amigos. What brings you out on this lovely day?

OLIVE: Lizards! We've been observing them.

SEÑOR TAPIR: Oh? And what did you see?

OLIVE: We saw that lizards have smooth, shiny scales.

ELINOR: We also learned that lizards eat ants!

KOA: Yeah! They only eat ants. Just like I only eat mac ‘n cheese!

ELINOR: Have you seen any lizards around?

SEÑOR TAPIR: Here!

KOA: I think this lizard is looking for ants to eat... but I don't see any.

ARI: Whoa! The lizard just ate a berry!?

KOA: But I thought they only eat ants?

ELINOR: Maybe lizards eat more than one thing...

They eat ants and berries!

SEÑOR TAPIR: That is right! Very few lizards eat only one thing.

Most eat a variety of foods. Insects are their favorite,

but they eat many other things as well, like berries.

Eating different foods is how they get all the nutrients they need, just like we do.

ELINOR: So lizards eat ants, and berries, and other foods too?

OLIVE: Mhm. It's how they get their nutrients!

"Nutrients” are the things in food that help us to grow.

KOA: [Stomach rumbles]

SEÑOR TAPIR: Wow. Sounds like the lizard isn't the only one who's hungry.

Here. This will take care of your tummy rumbles.

KOA: Mmmm....

ARI: Koa only eats mac ‘n cheese now.

KOA: Actually... I've been thinking, and if lizards eat different foods, then so can I.

Mmmm! Mac 'n cheese is still my favorite but... This is totally good too!

ELINOR: And it has more nutrients.

SEÑOR TAPIR: Exactamente!

♪ Eat a bit of this, and munch a bit of that. ♪

♪ Eating different things is where it's at. ♪

♪ To get the thing we need to grow. Variety is the way to go! ♪

KIDS:♪ Mix it up! Eat lots of different foods! ♪

♪ Mix it up! It'll make you feel good! Mix it up! ♪

KOA:♪ The nutrients we need. They're in the foods that we eat. ♪

♪ But no one food is complete. ♪

♪ So here's a tip that you can't beat. Variety makes the tastiest treat! ♪

KIDS:♪ Mix it up! Eat lots of different foods! Mix it up! It'll make you feel good! ♪

ALL: ♪Mix it up! ♪

KOA: [tummy rumbles]

Oh! I guess I'm still hungry. Olive, may I have some of your apple slices, please?

OLIVE: Of course! They're crispy and delicious.

KOA: So many different foods. I can't wait to eat a bit of everything.

[laughing] Well, almost everything. I'll leave the ants for the lizards.
