RANGER RABBIT: So, is my little honey bunny ready?

ELINOR: Yes, Mom!

RANGER RABBIT: Elinor Rabbit, do you promise to take good care of the plants in the forest?

ELINOR: YES!

RANGER RABBIT: Do you promise you'll take care of all creatures, big or small?

ELINOR: YES-YES!

RANGER RABBIT: Do you promise you'll share your love for the forest with others?

ELINOR: YES-YES-YES!

RANGER RABBIT: Then I officially make you... a Junior Forest Ranger!

ELINOR: Woo-hoo! Yes! Hehe!

RANGER RABBIT: Today, you'll be helping the Rangers with special forest duties.

We'll be spending the day at a special spot called Lodgepole Woods!

ELINOR: Ooooh... Okay, let's go!

RANGER RABBIT: Are you ready for your first Junior Forest Ranger task?

ELINOR: Yes, I am!

RANGER RABBIT: Okay... Welcome to Lodgepole Woods!

ELINOR: Wow!

RANGER RABBIT: This is one of the oldest parts of the forest,

and one of my favorites.

Your first task is to help us Rangers observe it.

We want to make sure it's nice and healthy.

ELINOR: Don't worry Mom, I'll observe and protect Lodgepole Woods no matter what!

RANGER RABBIT: Well, good luck Junior Ranger Elinor.

ELINOR: Thanks mom!

JOE MOUSE: Hmm... so interesting...

ELINOR: What's so interesting?

JOE MOUSE: Ah! Oh!

ELINOR: Ooops! [chuckles] Sorry, Ranger Mouse.

JOE MOUSE: [chuckles] Not to worry! I was just observing these Pine Cones.

ELINOR: Ranger Mouse, I notice that these Pine Cones look different.

This one looks open, and this one looks closed.

JOE MOUSE: Yes Elinor, did you know when a Pine Cone is ready to grow a new tree,

it will open up and seeds will fall out.

ELINOR: Whoa! I didn't know Pine Cones had seeds in them?

JOE MOUSE: Yup. When these seeds fall to the ground, they can grow into new trees,

helping the forest stay healthy and growing.

ELINOR: That's so interesting! I can help look for more Pine Cones!

JOE MOUSE: Thank you Junior Ranger Elinor, there seems to be plenty of...

Oh! Pine Cones around. [chuckles]

Uh, why don't you see if Ranger Gee Raffe needs some help?

ELINOR: Okay!

GEE RAFFE: Hmm... so interesting...

ELINOR: What's so interesting, Ranger Gee Raffe?

GEE RAFFE: Huh? Who said that?

ELINOR: [giggle] I did, Ranger Gee Raffe. Down here!

GEE RAFFE: Ohhh hello my little tiny Junior Forest Ranger.

ELINOR: What are you doing?

GEE RAFFE: I'm putting up some DO NOT DISTURB SIGNS around this special tree.

It needs protection!

ELINOR: Why does it need protection?

GEE RAFFE: This is a Shumard Oak Tree, there's not many of them growing in this area.

So, we need to make sure no one disturbs this little one.

ELINOR: I can help put up the signs!

There! Now it's protected!

GEE RAFFE: Oh... Thanks Elinor -— er.. I mean Junior Ranger Elinor.

Why don't you keep exploring and let us know if you see anything the forest needs.

ELINOR: Will do!

This part of the forest is different.

There's so many small trees and bushes here, and it's a lot harder to see the ground.

Awww, it's so cute, hello little tree.

I wonder why this part of the forest looks so different from Lodgepole Woods?

Hmm...

RANGER RABBIT: Elinor! It's time to go!

ELINOR: I love observing and protecting Lodgepole Woods.

It's now MY favorite spot in the forest.

RANGER RABBIT: That's great. You did a wonderful job helping us Rangers, today.

ELINOR: I promise as a Junior Forest Ranger, I'll always take good care of Lodgepole Woods.

ELINOR: Mom, can Ari and Olive come tomorrow when we visit Lodgepole Woods?

I want to show them how special it is.

RANGER RABBIT: I can't see why not.

ELINOR: Yay! Hehehe!

Oh... Is is a thunderstorm?

RANGER RABBIT: Yep, sounds like it honey bunny.

ELINOR: That's sooo [yawn]-interesting...

Olive, Ari, I can't wait for you to see my favorite spot in the forest.

ARI: Woo-hoo! OLIVE: Yeah!

ELINOR: We Rangers spent all day observing it yesterday. It's very special.

ARI: What makes it so special, Elinor?

ELINOR: You'll see! We're almost there.

RANGER RABBIT: [sniffing] I smell smoke.

OLIVE: [sniffing] Me too! It's coming from up ahead.

RANGER RABBIT: That's Lodgepole Woods. Come on, kids, stay close and follow me.

KIDS: [gasp] Ooooh. Oh no!

ELINOR: Oh no! [gasp] Our special spot!

RANGER RABBIT: Okay, kids. There seems to have been a small forest fire.

Let's check to see if it's safe before we go any closer.

GEE RAFFE: It's okay, it's safe now.

RANGER RABBIT: Hey Joe. Do we know what caused the fire?

OLIVE: Was it from a campfire?

JOE MOUSE: No, it looks like this was a natural fire caused by lightning.

ARI: Ohhh yeah! I heard the thunderstorm last night.

RANGER RABBIT: Hmm... We're lucky the fire didn't spread too far.

ELINOR: This was our special spot and it got hurt.

ARI: Maybe we can help them fix it, Elinor?

OLIVE: Yeah, I'm sure there's something we can do!

ELINOR: I promised I'd take care of Lodgepole Woods, but it got ruined...

I guess I wasn't a very good Junior Forest Ranger...

RANGER RABBIT: Are you okay, honey bunny?

ELINOR: No... Why did this have to happen, Mommy? Our special spot is gone forever...

RANGER RABBIT: Aw, I'm sorry, Elinor. But I wouldn't say it's gone forever.

ELINOR: It's not? You mean it can grow back?

RANGER RABBIT: That's right.

ELINOR: But how can a forest grow back after a fire?

RANGER RABBIT: I'll tell you what. Why don't we go back and find out together.

ARI: Elinor, you're back.

OLIVE: Is everything okay, Junior Ranger Elinor?

ELINOR: My mom says Lodgepole Woods can grow back after the fire.

Want to help me see how?

ARI: Yeah! OLIVE: Okay!

There's not much left...

ARI: Yeah, it looks like my dad's favorite breakfast... Burnt toast.

ELINOR: [gasp] Look, Pine Cones!

ARI: And look at all those seeds!

OLIVE: Wow!

ELINOR: Mommy, will new trees grow from these seeds?

RANGER RABBIT: Yes Elinor, that's part of how Lodgepole Woods will grow back.

OLIVE: But where did these pine cones come from? I thought everything was burned?

ELINOR: I think they're coming from over there. Come on, we need more observations!

OLIVE: [gasp] Hey! The same Pine Cones and seeds are over here!

ARI: This part of the forest wasn't burned from the fire, so it still has its seeds.

ELINOR: That's it!

Lodgepole Woods can still get seeds from the parts of the forest that weren't burned.

OLIVE: Awww, thank you little trees for helping.

ELINOR: Hmm... I was wondering about this part of the forest yesterday.

How come the trees here are smaller than the ones Lodgepole Woods had?

RANGER RABBIT: Great question Junior Ranger Elinor. What do YOU think?

ELINOR: Hmm...

Maybe the trees are smaller because this part of the forest is still growing.

OLIVE: But why is it growing? Did something happen to it?

ELINOR: Maybe there was a fire here a while ago, and it's still growing back.

RANGER RABBIT: Good observation, kids, you're right.

A fire burned this part of the forest not long ago.

Natural fires can clear a part of the forest, giving new plants a space to grow.

ELINOR: And if this part of the forest can grow back.

That means Lodgepole Woods can grow back too!

KIDS: [cheers] Woo-hoo! Yeah! Yay!

ARI: FORESTS. ARE. AMAZING.

RANGER RABBIT: So, Junior Ranger Elinor, what do you think?

Will our favorite spot grow back after it was burned by a fire?

ELINOR: Yes! It will! It will grow back because a forest is always growing!

RANGER RABBIT: That's right, just like little bunnies.

ELINOR: [giggles]

ELINOR: [singing]♪♪♪ Forests are amazing!

RANGER RABBIT: [singing] They're always growing!

ELINOR /RANGER RABBIT: [singing]It may happen slow, but if we care for them,

they grow and grow!

ELINOR: [singing]Forests come in different, shapes and sizes.

Big or small, they're full of surprises.

RANGER RABBIT: [singing]They spread their seeds, when the wind blows.

They find a way, to change and grow!

ELINOR/RANGER RABBIT: [singing]Forests are amazing, they're always growing!

It may happen slow. But if we care for them, they grow and grow!

ELINOR: Now Lodgepole Woods is even more special. We can all watch it grow together.

OLIVE: "“Big Brother"”

ARI: Scrub, scrubbity scrub scrub scrub!

[humming]

And rinse, rinsity rinse rinse rinse!

And dry.

Huh?

Eeeee-uh!

Mom! Can you grab me a towel please?

MS. BAT: What's that, Ari?

ARI: I can't reach the towels. Can you--

MIRI: [crying]

MS. BAT: Uh-oh, sounds like your sister needs something. Coming, sweetie!

ARI: [sigh] I guess we'll have to get a towel ourselves.

MIRI: [cooing]

MR. BAT: Come on, Miri, just one bite. You love applesauce.

MIRI: [cooing]

MS. BAT: Or maybe some banana? Mmm, yummy banana.

MIRI: [baby cooing]

MS. BAT: I guess it's just not a banana day.

MIRI: [baby cooing]

ARI: Can I have a bowl of cereal, please?

MS. BAT: Just a second, Ari. What if we try distracting her?

MR. BAT: Could work! [funny noises]

MS. BAT: Miri, see how funny Daddy looks?

MIRI: [cooing]

ARI: Mom, Dad, cereal?

MR. BAT: I know, Miri.

[gruff voice] I'm a monster, and I DON'T want you to eat your breakfast.

MIRI: [cooing] MR. BAT: [funny monster noises]

Yiiiiiiikes!

[clears throat] Applesauce emergency!

MIRI: [cooing] MS. BAT: [sigh] Miri, you defeated the monster.

ARI: [sigh] I guess I'll get my own cereal.

MR. BAT: Sorry we couldn't help, Ari. But thank you for making your own breakfast.

ARI: You're welcome.

MR. BAT: That's one of the ways we know you're growing up. In fact--

MIRI: [cooing]

[Juice splatters on floor]

MS. BAT: Dish towel?

ARI: In fact what, Dad?

MR. BAT: [chuckles] This might be a two towel job.

MS. BAT: Okay, Miri, we're gonna try this one more time...

MIRI: [screaming coo]

MR. BAT: Looks like this little bat needs a little bath.

MS. BAT: You clean the baby, I'll clean the kitchen?

MR. BAT: Deal.

MIRI: [laughs]

ARI: Well, I guess I'm leaving.

[groans] Bye.

MS. BAT: Oh. Love you, Ari, bye!

OLIVE: Hi, Elinor, what are you looking at!

ELINOR: That bird is eating a worm!

OLIVE: Wooooow!

ELINOR: Hmm...

OLIVE: You look like you're wondering something.

ELINOR: I do?

OLIVE: Well, you're always wondering something, so that was just a guess.

KIDS: [giggles]

ELINOR: I know grown up birds eat worms but I was just wondering...

What do BABY birds eat? Wouldn't worms be too big?

OLIVE: Hmm... I dunno. Really little worms?

ELINOR: Hi Ari!

ARI: Hi, Elinor. Hi, Olive. [deep sigh]

OLIVE: What's wrong, Ari?

ARI: [sigh] My mom and dad are always busy taking care of Miri,

and they don't have time to help me.

I had to get my own towel after my bath, and I had to make my own breakfast.

They help her with EVERYTHING but me... nothing.

ELINOR: Aw, that's too bad.

ARI: It's okay. Miri's awesome but...

but sometimes I feel like she gets all the attention.

OLIVE: I'm sure you'll feel better after a fun day at school.

Miri doesn't get to go to school.

ELINOR: And then after school we can go on a kid adventure.

ARI: A kid-venture! I'm IN!

KIDS: [giggle]

ELINOR: Olive and I were just wondering what baby birds eat.

ARI: Well, I can tell you what baby BATS eat: almost nothing!

They dump most of the the food over their heads and throw it at their parents!

KIDS: [giggle]

OLIVE: I hope baby birds don't do THAT!

[ring]

[ring] KIDS: [cheer] Woo-hoo! Bye!

ARI: [sigh] Another AWESOME school day! Mz. Mole is the best.

ELINOR: See? I knew you'd have a great day at school.

OLIVE: And now we get to go on our kid-venture!

ELINOR: What is it, Ari?

ARI: I should ask my parents if I can go. Meet at my house?

OLIVE: Yeah! I'll bring my binoculars.

ARI: I'm hooooome!

MS. BAT: SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

[whispering] I just got Miri to sleep.

ARI: [whispering] Oh. Sorry.

MS. BAT: [whispering] It's okay, you didn't know. Welcome home, sweetie.

ARI: [whispering] Can I go on a kid-venture with Elinor and Olive?

MS. BAT: [whispering] A kid-venture? Sounds exciting! What do you think you'll find?

ARI: [whispering] We're looking for baby birds cause we were wondering what they eat because the worms--

MIRI: [crying]

MS. BAT: Oh! Sorry, Ari. You can tell me all about it later. Have fun.

Mommy's coming, Miri, Mommy's coming.

ELINOR: Ready to go, Ari?

ARI: I guess so.

ELINOR: Sooo, maybe baby birds eat french fries with ketchup and peanut butter?

Ari's favorite!

OLIVE: Elinor! Where would baby birds get ketchup?

ARI: I dunno.

ELINOR: Look!

[buzzing]

[bird chirping]

ELINOR: Look at that! A nest!

OLIVE: [whispering] Ooh, I wonder what kind of bird lives in there.

[whispering] [gasp] There it is!

ELINOR: [whispering] A red bird! I think it's a cardinal.

OLIVE: Yep, it's a cardinal all right. The daddy cardinals are red, and the mommies are grey.

ELINOR: [whispering] Cool! And look it has a worm!

ARI: [whispering] I see some baby birds! Whoa!

ELINOR: Here's the answer to our question, Olive!

Baby birds do eat worms, but they don't find the worms themselves. The parents do.

OLIVE: Ohhhhh. They're so tiny that they can't get their own food.

ELINOR: That is SO interesting!

ARI: Oh! It's just like my dad feeding Miri, only the baby birds aren't as messy.

KIDS: [giggle]

[bird chirps] OLIVE: Over there! MORE cardinals!

ARI: These cardinals look bigger than the babies. They must be big kid birds.

ELINOR: Yeah! Their eyes are open, and they have more feathers. They're pretty cute.

OLIVE: It's a mommy bird. But she didn't bring a worm.

ARI: So what will the kid birds eat?

ELINOR: They can FLY?

[bird chirps]

OLIVE: It's looking for something on the ground.

ELINOR: The kid bird found a worm all by itself!

ELINOR: Maybe THAT's why the mommy bird didn't bring food...

The little bird is old enough to look for its own food!

ARI: Huh.

OLIVE: What is it, Ari?

ARI: Maybe that's why my mom and dad give so much attention to Miri.

She can't take her own bath or make her own breakfast, but I can.

Just like the baby birds can't get their own food, but the big kid birds can.

OLIVE: That's why your mom and dad let you do all those things by yourself.

ELINOR: Miri is like the baby birds that can't leave the nest.

[baby bird chirps]

ELINOR: And you're like the big kid bird that can find his own worms to eat.

OLIVE: Wait! Ari's going to eat WORMS?

ELINOR: Ari will eat pretty much anything. But maybe not worms.

ARI: Yeah, I'm never THAT hungry.

KIDS: [giggles]

ARI: I'll see you tomorrow. I need to go talk to my mom and dad!

ELINOR: Bye, Ari!

ARI: [whispering] Mom! Dad!

MR. BAT: Ha! It's okay, Ari, you don't need to whisper any more. Miri's awake.

Did you have fun with Elinor and Olive? How was the kid-venture?

ARI: It was great.

Mom, Dad, I felt sad today, thinking about how you spend so much time helping Miri.

MS. BAT: Oh, sweetie.

ARI: But I think I know why. Miri is little, and she needs your help to do things.

But I'm older, and I can do lots more things by myself.

MS. BAT: That's true. We love you both the same,

but babies like Miri need more help from their parents than big kids like you.

ARI: I know!

She can't even take her own bath, or make her own breakfast,

or go to school, or go out and play with friends--

MIRI: [laughs]

MR. BAT: -—and right now, she sure doesn't seem to be able eat by herself.

MIRI: [cooing] ARI: Maybe that's something else I can do as a big kid.

MS. BAT: What's that, Ari?

MIRI: [cooing]

ARI: Hey Miri!

MIRI: [laughs]

ARI: Here comes the big bird, flying around with the food for the baby bird...

WHOOSH - here it comes...!
