01x04 - The Case of the Debate Debacle/The Case of the Soothing Solution/The Case of the Unaltered State

Post by bunniefuu »

Did a word that's important to you go missing?

And now all you can feel, do, or think

is the opposite of that word?

-Then call us! I'm Sly. -And I'm Gabby.

We're Word Detectives, and we solve...

[both] Word Mysteries!

Together, we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.

We'll find your missing word, fast.

-Not to mention briskly. -And swiftly.

Yeah, we're really good with words.

[both] Wordsville!

Mmm, chocolate, the best ice cream flavour ever created.

No way. Strawberry's way better.

Okay.

Strawberry's better.

Really? That's weird, because I was just about

to agree with you that chocolate is better,

which I would usually never say.

Could this be a Word Mystery?

[Sly] Reporter Read's calling!

So, yes.

Word Detectives! It's awful!

Someone's taken my banner!

I agree, that is awful.

Here's what it looks like.

[Sly] Your banner says "debate" on it.

"Debate" is a conversation people have

to express different opinions.

And without the word "debate" in Wordsville,

nobody can disagree anymore.

I agree.

[gasps] Wait, am I doing it?

Yep, we're all in agreement.

And nothing's up for debate.

So is that why I agree

strawberry's better than chocolate, now?

-[gasps] -[Gabby] I think so.

Gabby, we have to take this case!

Tell us everything. Sly will animate.

[Sly] Recap time!

[Reporter Read] Well, Wordsville is considering

a new town rule about always having pets

on leashes when they're outside.

People have different opinions about it,

so I decided to host a debate in my newsroom

to have a conversation about it.

Vet Wilder thought the leash rule was a bad idea.

Firefighter Ember thought it was a good idea.

Some juice was spilled in the middle of the debate,

and I went to go get a towel.

When I came back, Vet Wilder, Firefighter Ember,

and my debate banner were gone!

Very strange. Could you show us the scene

-of the mystery, please? -[Reporter Read] Yeah.

[Sly] I'm saving this screenshot for our case notes.

-We done here, Gabby? -You bet.

We'll solve this, Reporter Read. There's no debate about that.

Case notes time!

So, we know what happened.

Someone stole Reporter Read's "debate" banner.

Now nobody has any different opinions,

and instead, everyone agrees on everything.

We know where it happened: the newsroom,

when Reporter Read left to get a towel to clean up a spill.

[Gabby] Our suspects are Vet Wilder, and Firefighter Ember.

And we need to figure out who did it, how, and why.

The clues found at the scene of the mystery are spilled juice,

and a photo of a dog with a bandage on.

[Sly] I hope that dog is less sad now.

He looks like a very good boy.

No argument here. Let's call Vet Wilder.

That photo is probably his.

[ringing]

Detectives! It's always nice to hear from you two.

How can I help?

Did you forget anything at Reporter Read's newsroom today?

I didn't bring anything there. I was just there for the debate.

-Do you like debates? -Not really.

But the animals need me to speak up for them.

The new leash rule will keep them

from being able to freely exercise and play.

There would be no fetching a ball, stick, or Frisbee.

Firefighter Ember had the opposite perspective.

Someone had to debate her.

How did her different opinion make you feel?

I didn't like it at the time.

But now we agree, so it doesn't matter.

It's more peaceful now, too.

Peaceful?

Well, yeah.

Debating, arguing, and disagreeing make me nervous.

It's nice that we're not arguing, right?

-Makes sense. -It is pretty nice.

I knew you'd understand.

Anyway, I should focus on brushing my bunny.

Hmm. Vet Wilder didn't seem very upset

about the word "debate" being gone.

You're right. And he said debating makes him nervous.

You're right! [shudders]

-We have got to stop doing that. -[Sly] Yeah.

Let's talk to Firefighter Ember to hear her side.

[ringing]

Hey, Word Detectives. How can I help you?

-Do you like debating? -I love it.

Expressing my opinions and having a conversation

about different ideas really excites me.

Especially when it's about safety.

How was today's newsroom debate?

It wasn't much of a conversation.

-Why not? -Vet Wilder was so nervous

that he couldn't get his ideas across,

so I spoke a lot more than he did.

What was your opinion about the new leash rule?

That it's unsafe for pets to be without leashes.

They could get hurt.

I even brought a photo of an injured dog as evidence.

The photo of the dog was yours?

Yep. What a good boy, huh?

You're right. So good.

I showed Vet Wilder, and he got flustered,

and accidentally spilled his juice.

When Reporter Read went to get a towel,

I figured the debate was over, and came back to the station.

Besides, I'd shared my opinions,

and I was sure even Vet Wilder had agreed with me by the end.

-What do you think now? -Oh, I totally agree

with Vet Wilder now. Obviously.

Talk later.

Did Firefighter Ember take the banner to end the debate?

And make sure everyone shared her opinion?

If she did, it backfired,

because now she agrees with Vet Wilder.

True. Let's take another look at our case notes.

[Gabby] We know the photo of the sad...

[Sly] But very good...

[Gabby] ...dog belonged to Firefighter Ember,

and Vet Wilder spilled the juice because he got nervous.

[Sly] Vet Wilder doesn't like debates,

or arguments, or disagreements.

[Gabby] But he also said the animals

needed him to speak up for them.

When he couldn't do that, did he find another way to help?

Sly, I think we cracked this!

Let's show 'em how it happened.

[ringing]

Now presenting Word Mystery animated re-enactment of...

[Gabby's voice] It's time to debate. Vet Wilder,

what do you think of the possible Wordsville rule

that pets must always wear leashes outside?

[Sly's voice] Well, um, you see, the pets need, you know...

[Gabby's voice] Interesting stuff. Firefighter Ember?

I'm of the opinion that running around off-leash is unsafe.

This is what could happen. Aw!

[Sly's voice] I mean--

[Gabby's voice] Oh, let me get a towel for that.

Debate's over. Don't worry.

The pets will be okay on leashes.

[Sly's voice] I can't let this be the last word for my pets.

-It was Vet Wilder who did it! -[Reporter Read gasps]

-No way! -You got me.

How? He took the banner

while Reporter Read was getting a towel,

and after Firefighter Ember left.

Why? Because he wanted to speak for the animals.

But debates make him nervous.

Yes, I did it. You're right.

Firefighter Ember, you're so amazing

at expressing your ideas, and I get so nervous.

I wanted to make you, and everyone else, agree with me

about the leash rule, without having to debate.

I'm sorry. I was just trying to look out for my animals.

I didn't mean to make you nervous.

I like hosting debates,

but maybe you two should discuss the leash rule on your own.

I'm sorry for pressuring you to debate in public

if it made you feel uncomfortable.

I'd like that. And I'm sorry for taking your banner.

I'll bring it right back.

[ringing]

Debate is back in Wordsville!

Is that why you all look so happy?

We also had a private conversation

and found a compromise for the leash rule.

Pets will be allowed off-leash,

but only in fenced areas, so they're safe.

So a debate led to an agreement!

[all] Thanks, Word Detectives!

Are you ready to admit chocolate is the best ice cream flavour?

Never! Look at how delicious strawberry--

Uh-oh.

Still good.

[slurps]

There's no debate about that.

-I love chocolate. -Mmm.

Um, Gabby?

-What? -Um, are you okay?

Not really, Sly. I'm anxious, annoyed, worried,

irritated, and stressed all at the same time.

Writing about my feelings in my journal

usually calms me down, but it's not working.

Same! I feel all those feelings too.

And squeezing my squeezy stress ball isn't helping,

-no matter how hard I squish. -[pop]

Aww, I squished too hard!

[Gabby] And Scientist Cosmo's calling too!

Are we feeling this way because of a Word Mystery?

Only one way to find out.

Word Detectives! My new machine is missing.

-This one. -[Gabby] Interesting.

[Sly] Your machine says the word "soothing" on it.

The dictionary says when something is soothing,

it makes you feel calm, comforted, and helps you relax.

But I've never heard of a machine that could soothe you.

That's because I just invented it.

I wanted to find a solution to feeling irritated,

so I built a soothing machine that plays sounds

that help you feel calm and comforted.

I get it. We're not feeling calm right now

-because the word "soothing"-- -Is missing!

We do have a Word Mystery on our hands.

Scientist Cosmo, tell us what happened

and I'll animate it. Recap time.

[Cosmo]I was testing my brand-new soothing machine when

Singer Melody and Artist Clay came by to try it out.

But my tests were incomplete,

so I said they couldn't try the machine yet.

They were annoyed with me,

but I was distracted by writing down all my observations.

I told them to come back later,

and I put my machine away on a shelf.

I didn't even notice when they left,

but as soon as the door to my lab closed, I got irritated,

and my soothing machine was gone.

One of them took your machine! That is so irritating.

So irritating! Can you show us the scene of the mystery?

Oh, right. This is the shelf

where my soothing machine used to be.

[Sly] Thanks, Scientist Cosmo.

I'll take a screenshot for our Case Notes.

-[camera shutter clicks] -We'll report back

-when we know more. -Bye.

This case is really bugging me.

Me too. Maybe doing our Case Notes will help soothe us.

We know what happened.

Someone took the soothing machine

and now we're all super irritated!

The Science Lab is where it happened,

and it happened when Scientist Cosmo was distracted.

[Sly] Artist Clay and Singer Melody are our suspects.

All that's left is to figure out who did it for sure,

how, and why.

[Sly] Let's look for some clues.

[Gabby] I see sparkles all around the shelf

where the soothing machine used to be.

[Sly] Sparkles always get everywhere.

They're so annoying.

But Singer Melody loves them.

Let's call her.

Word Detectives. Great to see you,

but can we make this quick?

I've got a lot on my♪ mind

It's a Word Mystery. Why were you at the Science Lab today?

I went with Artist Clay. He's worried about some art thing,

and I'm stressed about my next album.

We thought Science Cosmo would let us try

his soothing machine to calm down, but he said no.

-Did that bother you? -Uh, yeah. Obviously.

Especially since we helped him with the soothing stuff for it.

I played soft music on my phone,

and Artist Clay made a painting and let Scientist Cosmo record

the sound of soft brushstrokes on a canvas.

It was so irritating he wouldn't share.

So is that why you took the soothing machine for yourself?

What an annoying question.

Causing a Word Mystery is not my style.

If his soothing machine is missing, Scientist Cosmo

probably misplaced it. He gets so distracted.

I just played annoying sounds on my phone

to get him to understand how we felt.

But did it work? No. Ugh!

Hmm. Do you know where these sparkles came from?

Maybe a few fell off my sparkly phone.

Anyway! Better get back to

worrying about my new album now. Bye.

Singer Melody wouldn't make herself more irritated

by causing a Word Mystery, would she?

Hard to say. People don't always

act like themselves when they're feeling irritated.

Hmm. Let's see what Artist Clay has to say for himself.

Oh, Word Detectives. Hello there.

-Are you all right, Artist Clay? -I'm not.

Being an artistic genius is very stressful.

I'm always worried about my next great work.

Is that why you went to the lab?

Yes. I was bothered before I got there,

but even more irritated after I left.

I gave Scientist Cosmo the idea to add the calming sound

of brushstrokes to his soothing machine,

but he wouldn't let me try it.

So I took the painting I made for him back.

Did you take the soothing machine, too?

[scoffs] Are your questions always this irritating?

I never wanna cause a Word Mystery.

Besides, my hands are full with my painting.

Maybe Scientist Cosmo misplaced it.

-He gets distracted. -Do you know how sparkles

-got all over the floor? -[Clay] Oh, uh...

they must've fallen off my painting.

See? There are sparkles in the paint.

Now, I must get back to stressing.

And we have to stress about solving this Word Mystery!

What did we learn from our suspects?

[Sly] They were both irritated when they went to the lab.

[Gabby] Then even more irritated when Scientist Cosmo

wouldn't let them try his soothing machine.

[Sly] They both think he misplaced it.

[Gabby] And they both said causing a Word Mystery

-isn't like them. -But you said people

don't act like themselves when they're irritated.

-I did say that. -And their stories were similar.

Except for the part about sparkles

that they didn't figure out ahead of time!

We cracked this case! Let's show everyone

who did it, how, and why.

Listen up, everyone! Now presenting

the Word Mystery Animated Reenactor,

"The Case of the Soothing Solution."

"May we try your soothing machine?

I'm an anxious creative genius."

[Gabby]"And I'm worried about my new album."

"Sorry, no. My tests aren't complete."

[Sly] "But we helped you with it!"

[Gabby]"This song will help you understand how we feel.

Isn't it irritating?"

[high-pitched whirring]

"Please come back later. I have to write down my observations."

"Artist Clay, let's show Scientist Cosmo

how it feels to be irritated."

[Sly]"Let's do it!"

Singer Melody and Artist Clay

-are the ones who did it! -Both of you did it?

They grabbed the soothing machine

when Scientist Cosmo was distracted.

-That's how. -[Gabby] They did it because

they were irritated and wanted to make him irritated too.

-That's why. -Okay, we did it.

But only because we needed help to calm down

and Scientist Cosmo wouldn't share his soothing machine.

Even after we helped him with it.

But I didn't know if it worked yet.

That's why I had to test it.

We get it. You were already irritated,

and it was annoying to have to wait.

But you could've found another way to soothe that feeling.

Like asking Scientist Cosmo if he needed help.

Helping other people can be calming.

♪ You're right

[sighs] I think we know what to do.

My soothing machine is back.

Thank you, Singer Melody and Artist Clay,

for helping me invent it and for returning it.

You're welcome. We're sorry we took it.

Feeling irritated can make you, well, irritating.

From now on, we'll take a second

to calm down before we do anything.

I recommend a squeezy stress ball.

Journaling always helps me.

And you can both try the soothing machine

when I'm done testing it.

[all] Thanks, Word Detectives!

The Case of the Soothing Solution solved.

Should we get you another squeezy stress ball

-to celebrate? -It's okay.

I made myself a new one. It's perfect for squeezing.

[laughs]

See? My chair could go pretty low.

Cool. Are you coming back up?

My chair is stuck.

-I-- -[lever rattling]

I can't change the position!

[gasps] Do you think that's a Word Mystery?

I think your chair's just broken.

Then why is Singer Melody calling?

Word Detectives, I--

Are you okay, Word Detective Sly?

-I'm comfy down here. -If you say so. Back to me.

I need your help. I'm starring in a new movie musical.

I had my costumes on a hanger with the label "alter" on it.

-See? -[Gabby] I do see.

But now, the word "alter" is...

♪ missing

"Alter" means to change or adjust something

so it's different than before.

Exactly. And I need my costumes adjusted to fit me

before I leave to sh**t my movie.

But now the word "alter" is gone, and--

Nothing could get altered!

So this is a Word Mystery.

And it must be why I can't adjust the position of my chair.

But it's worse than not being able to

adjust clothes or chairs.

What could possibly be worse?

I wanted to go from just singing

to singing and acting in movies.

But with the word "alter" gone, I won't be able to make a...

♪ change

That is worse!

Tell us what happened and I'll animate it.

Recap time!

[Melody] Scientist Cosmo was here

testing the Super Hold Formula Hairspray

I had asked him to make for me

when Baker Graham came in with my morning croissant.

That's when I told them I was leaving for Paris, France,

to star in a new movie musical.

They seemed shocked.

Then I showed them my costumes.

I left the room to get a photo of my co-star,

a singing horse named Clementine.

When I came back, Scientist Cosmo, Baker Graham,

and "alter" label were all gone!

Intriguing. Can you show us the scene of the mystery?

Anything to help.

[Sly] I'm taking a screenshot for our Case Notes.

We're on the case, Singer Melody.

Thank you!

Want me to open the Case Notes, Sly?

[grunting] No, I can reach. This is fine.

[Gabby] We know what happened.

The word "alter" was taken off Singer Melody's costumes,

and now nothing in town can be altered or adjusted.

It happened once Singer Melody left to get a photo.

And the Recording Studio is where it happened.

Baker Graham and Scientist Cosmo are our two suspects.

Now to find out who, how, and why.

Let's look at the clues.

From down here, it looks like

some sort of schedule and a blow dryer.

And from up here, I'd say that's right.

Let's call Baker Graham.

Oh. Hi, Word Detectives.

Feeling low, Word Detective Sly?

It's just my chair. I'm fine.

But you seem sad.

Is it because you can't adjust your recipes?

Like take out almonds or add chocolate?

I'm not sad, but...

I guess it is a bit annoying.

Every morning, I follow the exact same routine.

I look at my recipes,

and I decide which ones I want to adjust.

Do you do that before or after

you bring Singer Melody a croissant?

I don't normally bring it to her.

She usually comes to the bakery,

and we have a morning croissant break.

It's my favourite part of my morning routine,

which I have all written down.

Uh, somewhere.

But today, that routine changed.

She was so excited about sh**ting a movie in Paris!

So she forgot to come. Which I totally understand, but...

Oh, where did I put that piece of paper

I wrote my routine down on?

[sighs] If I lost it, I'll be even more sad.

Uh, not that I'm sad now. It-- Gotta go!

He's obviously sad, right?

Even I could see that from down here.

But he said he wasn't.

Let's see if Scientist Cosmo can help us crack this case.

It's weird not seeing your neck.

Oh, hi, Word Detectives.

I thought you'd be Singer Melody.

I'd ask what you're doing down there,

but I'm in a bit of a hurry right now.

Did you think Singer Melody was calling about your hairspray?

My Super Hold Formula Hairspray, to be precise.

We tested it earlier with a blow dryer,

and her hair didn't move an inch.

Wow! The hairstylist on Singer Melody's movie

will love using it.

I know! My formula is safe and effective.

But no one should use more than one spritz.

If they do, it could glue Singer Melody's hair together.

So you're saying you wouldn't want anyone

to alter the amount used?

Definitely not. I came back to write down instructions

on every bottle so it's clear

no one should change the amount of hairspray to use.

Well, I better get back to it.

Singer Melody ordered a lot of bottles.

Bye!

Let's open up the Case Notes.

Aw, my neck hurts from looking up at you.

[Gabby] Baker Graham seemed bothered

that he can't adjust his recipes.

[Sly] Well, Scientist Cosmo was worried

someone could alter how much hairspray to use.

What do the clues tell us?

[Gabby] Look! This paper says:

": a.m., look over recipes.

: a.m., croissant break with Singer Melody.

: a.m., bake cupcakes"!

[Sly] That must be Baker Graham's morning routine.

He did say the favourite part of his morning

is his croissant break with Singer Melody.

Now that she's leaving for Paris,

his routine won't be the same!

Sly, I think that's why he was sad!

I think we just solved this case.
