My name is David Rogers.

I'm an artist.

I'm really into bugs.

I've made over large-scale sculptures of insects.

When I say large, I mean really large.

This is my spider and web.

The spider is three foot by four feet and the web is feet by

feet.

This is one of my ant sculptures.

It stands over eight feet tall.

It takes approximately individual willow saplings to

create this one ant.

This is where you come in, Design Squads.

I challenge you to build for me a large scale outdoor sculpture

featuring a member of the arthropod family.

This sculpture should be six to ten feet long, made out of all

found forest materials.

The sculpture should fit into the natural native plant

surroundings.

The winner will have their sculpture displayed here at the

New England Wild Flower Society's Garden in the Woods

alongside my touring exhibit, the big bugs.

What's an arthropod?

Arthropod loosely means "jointed foot."

It basically includes classes of animals like millipedes,

crustaceans, spiders, and insects.

As soon as you guys are ready, we're going to split you up and

you're going to go to your separate work sites.

To decide the work spaces we're having a chainsaw competition.

Whoever can cut off a section of the log the fastest wins, and

their team gets to choose.

And who I have picked to do the chainsawing are Deysi and Jason.

So it looks like one solid piece of wood that's good enough

for us to carve would be the best way to go.

We've got those V-shaped trees.

We could have it sort of, like, leaning, like two of its arms up

against that, and its head sort of sticking through there.

Oh, that would be cool, because he could look over

everyone walking by.

start using as our main frame, and I found this big piece that

really works out because it already has two separate sticks.

Now I'm going to go look for a body piece.

I like the texture on this one.

with its head sort of poking through the V there, so it's all

looking down at the people who are coming by.

Well, has anyone ever seen one of these out in the wilderness?

Can't say that I've seen it in real life, but...

Yeah, yeah.

Well, I've seen them in real life, and you tend to find them

more in the ground, not in trees.

And I think you're adding a dimension to your build in terms

of figuring out how to get it to stand on maybe just two legs.

Tomas is the lone one who wanted it on the ground, so I

don't know.

As time goes on, that may be easier.

He's too modest, too.

For the segments of the body, if you take a chisel and just,

like, chisel grooves in, end up looking like that.

Which seems like a big of a cop out to me, because they're

making, like, a stick insect out of sticks.

going to be placed.

So I figured out how we can attach the legs to the body.

And then fasten this into the hole.

I have to say, once again, I'm very... I'm amazed, just like

I mean, wow.

Yeah, actually, it would be great if I could have a ladder,

and then I could go up and get a closer look at it.

The thing I love the most is really how you decided to go

with, like, a very traditional rustic style of using the

lashing to bring the branches together, the joints.

One of the things that's hard with this piece is it's hard to

really get a good picture of it.

I mean, what do you think in terms of how visible it is?

Well, I thought of it like camouflage.

Luna moths, they use their wings to camouflage with their

surroundings anyway.

Oh, that's a very good point.

If you just let the natural foliage become the wings.

So it is hidden.

It is actually blended in perfectly with the environment.

It's a great piece.

I think you did an amazing job.

challenge for me.
