[THEME MUSIC]
THEME SONG: Ready, Jet, Go!
Jet Propulsion, that's his name.
Jet Propulsion, he'll rocket to fame.
When he arrived he created a buzz 'cause, there was no house
and then there was.
He said, people of Earth you ain't seen nothing yet.
I'm from Bortron Seven and my name is Jet.
Jet Propulsion, that's his name.
He looks like us but he isn't the same.
I'm a space tripper and a galaxy crosser.
My parents brought me here in a flying saucer.
And just to prove it was a fact, he flew
them out to space and back.
With Jet Propulsion.
Jet Propulsion.
Ready, Jet, Go!
He showed up and now it's a blast.
Looks like the future really got here fast.
Nice to meet you human race, tell me all about the place.
Jet Propulsion.
Jet Propulsion.
Jet Propulsion.
Ready, Jet, Go!
CELERY PROPULSION: Oh, well that was a lovely afternoon
on the moon, Jet.
But it's time to head back to Earth.
Face, let's reset the communicator
to make sure the talk back works so we can, you know, talk back.
Excellent idea Celery.
The talk back has been buggy lately.
Sunspot, road trip home.
Next stop, planet Earth.
Hey mom, when we get home maybe we could play a Bortron Seven
board game, like Bortropoly.
Sure.
But don't forget, our family is invited
to our first neighborhood luck pot dinner.
The idea is, every earth neighbor
brings a different earth food.
Fascinating.
What are we going to bring?
Not sure.
What were you thinking of making tonight, Carrot?
Carrot?
JET PROPULSION: Dad?
Where are you, dad?
Not here, Not here, Not here.
What is it, boy?
Dad isn't here?
And you looked everywhere, even in the secret napping
compartment?
Dad did say he was going to take a short nap.
Dad?
Not napping there.
Could he have taken his nap on the moon?
Mom, we have to go back.
Whoopsie.
No need to worry, Jet.
I once accidentally left your dad on Mars.
He was fine.
Taught himself ballet while I was gone.
Way the by, there is nothing as relaxing as a moon nap.
Ah, there's nothing as relaxing as a moon nap.
Right, Celery?
You know what I'm talking about.
Celery?
Jet?
Sunspot?
[LAUGHING] They must be playing that Earth game, seek and hide.
OK, I'll find you.
Woohoo!
We're on a mission to the moon to go back and get Carrot.
Hey Sunspot, how about some we're on a mission music?
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
[ENGINE NOISES]
Wow Sunspot, unusual sounds.
Cool.
[ENGINE NOISES]
Then what is going on?
Hm, a slight engine malfunction.
Oh don't worry Jet, this kind of thing happens.
We can fix it.
Then we'll be on our way to get dad.
We better call dad and tell him.
Hi dad, it's Jet.
Dad?
Please just answer your helmet phone.
Dad.
Gotcha!
Well they're nowhere around here.
Did they also hide the saucer?
Well I guess I could call them since they're not calling me.
Well, maybe my helmet communication system is out.
Celery?
Jet?
Hi, it's me, Carrot.
I can't find any of you hiding anywhere.
Or did you leave me on the moon by mistake?
Hello?
Hello?
Hello?
Dad, hi!
We hear you.
Can you hear us?
Dad?
We're coming for you.
Now we know he's OK.
But I don't think he can hear us.
Ah, see Celery?
Something is buggy with the talk back.
Well, first thing's first.
Time to do some repairs outside the saucer.
Let's fix this puppy.
[SUNSPOT SCREAMING]
Sunspot come out.
Fix this puppy is an earthy saying.
When mom says puppy, she means the saucer.
CARROT PROPULSION: Maybe if I sing you'll hear me.
(SINGING) I'm just a moon Carrot singing here in space.
[LAUGHING]
We, uh, we hear you dad.
CARROT PROPULSION: --(SINGING) empty place, somewhere.
Just a moon--
You just can't hear us.
You can stop singing now, though.
OK, time's a wasting.
As the Earthies say, let's get fixing.
Yes, fixing.
Our main task is to reconnect the firnambulator
to the compressorator.
Mm.
And replace the turbine wires.
FACE : Correct, Celery.
I bet I could do the repairs.
Mom, can I?
Me and Sunspot.
CELERY PROPULSION: OK.
I know you and Sunspot can do the job,
even though it's more fixing than you've ever done before.
But I trust you both.
And I am ready to assist you, Jet.
We get to fix something in space and save the day!
Woohoo!
OK, fellas.
Tethers and tools ready to go outside the saucer?
Yes.
Excelsior!
I'm sure that Celery and Jet will come back for me.
Until then, I'll practice my plies in my dance crater.
[GRUNTING] And chant in my meditation crater.
Om.
My talk-with-an-accent crater (BRITISH ACCENT) Hello,
governor.
Fancy a spot of tea or bangers and mash?
Oh, before you head out Jet and Sunspot,
I just received a weather alert.
A solar storm just erupted on the sun.
What?
A storm?
The sun has weather?
Oh, Yes.
And this solar storm may be headed toward the moon.
I repeat, may be headed toward the moon.
So maybe Jet and Sunspot shouldn't
go outside the saucer?
FACE : Oh they'll be safe, I promise.
I'll keep track of the storm.
So what is a solar storm, Face?
A storm from the sun?
Bingo!
The sun is a very active star made of boiling gases
that pop and snap.
It's like a boiling pot of water that burps and hiccups.
And sometimes, the sun shoots huge blasts
of flaming gas into space.
Cool!
I mean, hot.
I mean, what happens to the flaming gas?
FACE : The blast of gas is a solar storm
that flies around space, but only in the direction
it was shot.
Like a rubber band.
It's only a problem if it's coming right at you.
Good.
Then we'll keep an eye on that solar storms direction.
Meanwhile, we've got a saucer to fix.
Luck good out there, boys.
CARROT PROPULSION: And this is my juggling crater.
[GRUNTING] But now it's my--
[GRUNTING] worry crater.
What if Celery and Jet don't come and get me?
I guess I'll just live here and plant
moon dust that will grow into trees,
and I'll eat moon dust fruit.
OK, enough worrying.
Let's make this fun and useful.
I'll use the time to test my moon wilderness skills.
Come on Carrot, let's go!
Oh, oh, wait, wait, wait, no, no.
I'm Carrot.
OK, roll call.
Here!
CELERY PROPULSION: First, rotate the firnambulator.
Carefully.
CARROT PROPULSION: All right, looks good.
Eh, still needs a roof.
OK, time to farm.
Carrot's got to eat.
Now can I grow slices of moon pizza cantaloupe?
Oh, I hope.
Gently reconnect the firnambulator
and the compressorator.
Uh-huh, oh, good.
Turn the fluters to the left.
Got it, mom.
Oh great.
Now activate the compressorator.
Oh no!
I knocked the compressorator loose.
Now I have to reattach it.
CELERY PROPULSION: Oh, take your time.
Things happen.
I'll walk you through this.
Way the by, your dad is fine.
I can hear him testing his moon wilderness skills.
CARROT PROPULSION: I love testing
my moon wilderness skills.
Building, planting, [SHIVERING] freezing.
I really need something warm.
Carrot is wearing a cutting edge woolen Earth scarf.
Ooh, all the rage.
And now I'm hungry.
Well, let's check my moon pizza crop.
Compressorator is back in place.
CELERY PROPULSION: Great.
Now, time to connect the turbine wires.
Only three to go.
Got it.
Ah, family.
So glad we're here together.
Uh, Jet, did you get shorter or taller?
No matter, I have so much to show you.
Look, I started a farm.
And I built a shelter.
Oh what's that, Celery?
You're impressed, ah, thank you.
Oh, oh, you are the amazing, too.
[GRUNTING]
Two more turns and we'll be--
No!
It's our special turbine wire wrench.
We need it.
Whoa!
[GRUNTS]
Wow.
Nice going, Jet.
The turbine wires are attached.
Good.
I'll start up the saucer.
Crossed fingers.
Oh yes, sounding good.
You did it Jet and Sunspot.
Woo-hoo!
Come in, guys.
Let's go get Dad and zip to that Earth dinner party.
[INAUDIBLE]
[GRUNTING] Ah, we're here.
Look, Jet.
It's the Earthies' Lunar Lander that they left on the moon.
JET PROPULSION: Shouldn't we hurry?
Where's the solar storm?
Is it near the moon?
Nope, look.
The solar storm went in a completely different direction.
Missed the moon by a billion miles.
Phew, what a relief.
To the moon.
Wait, can we still make it an exciting rescue of dad?
Absolutely Jet.
OK.
Hang on.
Woo-hoo!
Ooh, it's a dangerous moon rescue.
Now where's dad.
Hello?
Who is this.
Oh, it's me, Carrot, moon dweller.
Does anyone remember laughter?
Dad we hear you.
The saucer broke, but we fixed it.
We're right above the moon's surface.
Look.
I hear you.
You're quite loud, actually.
Oh!
I see the saucer right above me.
Uh, dad, we're making this an exciting rescue.
So pretend you're in a hurry and have to be rescued quickly, OK?
Got it.
(SHOUTING) Oh! Ah!
Help me!
I need to be rescued from the moon, hurry!
We're here, grab on dad.
[GRUNTING] Oh, goodbye pretend-- but real for me--
moon rock family.
Look after the pizza farm.
Phew, we saved you dad.
Wait, did you say pretend moon rock family?
That's my Carrot.
JET PROPULSION: I'm so happy you're back, dad.
Sorry we left you on the moon.
Yeah, it happens son.
Actually your mom has left me on different planets a few times.
But this experience made me grateful for all of you.
I am full of truth when I say, I missed you.
And I'm grateful for you, Carrot.
And for Jet and Sunspot.
I'm so proud of our boys.
They fixed the saucer, no problem.
Very calm under pressure.
Great job, Jet.
Mr. Sunspot.
So, you all want to play a board game later at home?
Bortropoly?
Sure dad.
But I guess we'll have to play after the luck
pot dinner party.
Remember?
It's tonight.
Oh, I completely forgot.
Our first Earth dinner party.
Ooh, what to cook.
Moon crater pies?
Lunar linguine.
CELERY PROPULSION: Or stuck on the moon salad?
JET PROPULSION: Celestial cereal?
CARROT PROPULSION: Ah, I've got it,
liver cookies with moon prunes?
FACE : [LAUGHING] Moon prunes.
Have you ever looked up at the moon at night
and wondered why it looks like it's changing shape?
Sometimes it looks like it's full and round,
and other times it's just a half circle.
Sometimes it's not there at all.
What's going on with that?
Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer I've got the moon
right here in my hands.
Well, OK, it's not really the moon, but you get the idea.
The moon isn't really changing shape, of course,
it's just a matter of your point of view.
As the moon is traveling around the Earth,
the Earth is traveling around the sun at the same time.
And that means different shadows are moving across the moon.
That's what makes it look like it's changing shape.
We call this the phases of the moon.
The Earth travels around the sun once a year.
And the moon is traveling around the Earth once a month.
As the moon travels around the Earth,
we sometimes see the side that's lit up by the sun.
And other times, when the moon's between the Earth and the sun,
we're looking at the part that's in shadow.
That's what makes it look like it's changing shape.
So the next time someone tells you
you're just going through a phase, just ask them which one?
Half, full, quarter, crescent.
You get the idea.
[LAUGHING]
This is my kind of basketball.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
[SHOUTING]
What on the Earth is going on?
Oh my, this is exciting.
And very loud.
Yeah, what are those bright flashes?
[THUNDER CRASHING]
What's that huge rumbling noise?
Is this some kind of earthy celebration,
like a holiday I haven't heard of yet
where they explode stuff?
No Jet, that's the th of July.
On Earth this is called a thunderstorm.
Oh right, thunderstorm.
Now I remember.
These flashes, Jet--
[THUNDER CRASHING]
--they're called lightning.
Uh-huh.
And the loud booming noise is what follows the lightning.
It's called thunder.
Lightning and thunder, huh?
I love it.
Does it do anything besides be bright and loud?
Well, sometimes thunderstorms make the electricity go out.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
CARROT PROPULSION: Not to worry, though, we're prepared.
CELERY PROPULSION: This is just the occasion
to use our emergency Bortronian lighting.
CARROT PROPULSION: Whoa, h*.
[LAUGH]
It's right over here.
Ooh, I like the purple color, mom.
Keep it there.
This light is so cool.
Our kitchen never looks like this.
Can we stay up?
We should go back to bed.
Bortronians need their sleep, just like Earthies.
Aw, do I have to?
I'm way too excited to sleep through my very
first earthy thunderstorm.
We could stay up and tell stories.
Or play Bortronian Bump.
Ooh, our favorite family card game.
Please, please, please, please?
Well, you know Celery, I don't think
I can go back to sleep, either.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
OK, I agree.
No sleep for now.
Wow.
That was a big one.
I keep feeling these power surges
every time lightning flashes.
I like it.
But I'm afraid I, too, am unable to go into sleep mode.
So what do we do?
I know.
Let's bring our bags of sleeping into the kitchen.
We can have an Earthy thunderstorm party.
Yes!
Excelsior!
ALL: Ooh.
Do you remember storms like this on other moons
or planets mom and dad?
Oh I remember a methane rainstorm on Titan.
Oh yeah, that was weird.
Really cool, too.
Yeah.
A great view of Saturn when it cleared up, though.
And I remember flying over a huge windstorm on Jupiter.
Those winds were going hundreds of miles an hour.
Was there lightning?
Sometimes.
But different from this.
Each planet has its own wacky weather.
Yes, Venus and her broiling hot winds.
Mars with its red sandstorms.
So cool.
[YAWNING]
[THUNDER CRASHING]
I've seen plenty of wind and rain before,
but this Earthy lightning is something new for me.
Yes it's fascinating, isn't it?
What makes it happen?
And why is there always thunder after the lightning?
Well, let's see.
The sun heats the surface of the earth.
That warmth causes water to evaporate
and rise up into the upper levels of the atmosphere.
It cools and forms a cloud.
Sometimes it gathers into storm clouds.
JET PROPULSION: Whoosh.
Sunspot's heating me up.
I'm a rising storm cloud.
And then what happens?
Well storm cloud, you climb and climb
up to where it's really cold.
And way up where the cold in the warm layers collide--
Oh look, you're a warm layer and I'm a cold layer.
CARROT PROPULSION: When they collide,
they can create electric charges that cause a bolt of lightning.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
FACE : Which creates the sound waves we hear as thunder.
But we see the lightning first and hear
the thunder afterward, because light
travels much faster than sound.
Wow.
Thanks mom and Face.
Now I think I understand Earth weather.
[ALL YAWNING]
[THUNDER CRASHING]
My word, that was a big one.
There's no way I'm falling asleep.
Oh, you took the words I was about to say
out from my mouth part, Jet.
Mom, dad, can we all stay up a little longer
and watch the Earth storm?
Oh sure, Jet.
It's a wild night out.
I know, let's move the party to the living room
and play some oversleep games.
Oh, yes.
[LAUGHING]
OK.
On Earth they call this game show charades.
We have to guess the Earth word that Sunspot is acting out.
Go ahead, Sunspot.
Oh, first word, one word.
You see, easy.
Uh, uh, flashlight, flash dance.
I got rhythm, I got music.
Dancing.
Dancing around with a flashlight and a drum.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
Uh, thunderstorm.
Now that you explain it, it's, it's obvious, yeah.
Ooh, now it's my turn.
This one's especially for you, Jet.
Uh, lying down?
Getting horizontal.
Coffee table, coffee table!
[SNORING]
That's it, Sunspot!
Sleep.
Ah, sleep.
What I'm trying to do but can't.
Good work, mom.
Right, of course.
I was going to say that next.
No you weren't.
Oh yes I was.
If I wasn't, may lightning strike me.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
OK, maybe tonight's not a good night to say that.
New oversleep activity, Bortronian folk dancing.
h* h*, yeah!
[ALL CHANTING]
[YAWNING]
Wow.
Every time I think I'm about to fall
asleep, more of this lightning and thunder stuff.
OK, still no sleep.
I know, how about a game on Bortronian Bump.
Oh!
I can never resist a game of Bortronian Bump.
Yes, I am feeling excitement.
OK Jet, you drew the floodle, go ahead and treeble.
Aha.
and a half.
That means I take one of your cards, Dad.
Oh, that was my persnip.
I was saving that.
Remember dear, don't tell us what's in your hand.
Oh right, I forgot again.
I call Sunspot.
Do you have a snitwich?
Oh, but I do.
Therefore I get the challenge.
(IN UNISON): Oh no.
Oh yes.
And I challenge you, Jet, to go to sleep.
[SIGH] You know, I am pretty tired.
I think I could finally get to sleep, mom.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
Power surge.
Wow, I thought I could sleep but I'm still too awake.
Then the game goes to Celery.
Everyone do the Bortronian Bump.
[ALL SINGING]
[THUNDER CRASHING]
[ALL YAWNING]
FACE : Ah, so tired.
What a night.
Listen, why don't we all go back to the kitchen
and try lying down in our bags of sleep.
Maybe if we just close our eyes and be still for an Earth
minute, it'll work.
Good idea Carrot.
Jet, are you willing to try?
[YAWNING] Sure mom, let's try.
So, let's see if we can sleep, all right?
I have a feeling that this thunderstorm
is finally slowing down.
I think you're right, mom.
It does sound more far away now.
And It's not raining as hard.
But even after all those sleepover games--
which were great by the way--
I think I'm still wide awake.
Oh, poor guy.
It really has been an unusual night of Earth weather.
Yeah.
I want to sleep but I can't.
What can I do about it, mom?
You usually have the answer for everything.
You're right, Jet.
She usually does.
Or I do, but I can't seem to switch into sleep mode either.
Hm.
I'd suggest doing another Bortronian folk dance,
but my feet are sore from the last one.
Plus I think I pulled something.
Let's face it, we're pretty tired.
We're overdue to get some sleep.
Let's all try again.
This bag of sleep isn't quite fitting me.
[SIGHING]
I have an idea.
Why don't I sing you a lullaby, Jet?
A lullaby?
You mean the kind of song you used to sing
to me when I was a baby?
Exactly.
But aren't I too big for lullabies now?
You're never too big for a lullaby.
OK.
We've tried everything else.
(SINGING) Remember when you were just this high
and I used to sing you a lullaby.
Now even though you think you're too big to cry,
you're never too big for a lullaby.
Sure is a crazy stormy night.
You curl up in bed and you hold on tight.
And every time you close your eyes
another flash lights up the skies.
Thunder makes your eyes go wide.
Just listen to a storm outside.
You can't fall asleep, oh you've tried and you've tried.
But you're never too big for a lullaby.
Because I am your mom and mom is true.
I'm always right here to comfort you.
I'll sing a song if you're green or your blue.
Because I am a mom, and that's what we do.
Remember when you were just this high
and I used to sing you a lullaby.
Now even though you think you're too big to cry,
you're never too big for a lullaby.
[SNORING]
Good night Jet.
Great.
Now I can't sleep.
Whoa.
Why did it take so much effort for me to stop?
Well that's because I was moving pretty fast.
And that means I had a lot of momentum.
When it comes to running races, sometimes stopping is
actually harder than starting.
Why is that?
That's because when you're running really fast,
you have a lot of what's called momentum.
Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer.
But what is momentum, anyway?
Momentum is how much stuff you have combined
with how fast you're going.
Now just imagine, if you're the space shuttle Orbiter.
The space shuttle weighs as much as elephants,
and it's traveling about , miles an hour
while it's orbiting the Earth.
But still, even when it comes down for a landing,
and even after it slows down through the atmosphere,
it's moving at an incredible speed--
about to miles an hour.
That means it's got a huge amount of momentum.
And because of this, it needs a really
long landing strip to be able to come to a complete stop safely.
Well that's exactly what happened here
at this space shuttle landing strip
at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
So the next time you try to come to a safe and complete stop,
just be glad you don't weigh as much as elephants running
at to miles an hour.
Here's my elephant imitation.
[ELEPHANT NOISE] No, that sounded like a cat.
[LAUGHING]
