- Mindy sure seems excited about her birthday.

- Yeah, so excited she's bouncing up and down.

How does she jump so high?

Hasn't she heard of Earth's gravity?

- It's not her, it's the bounce house, remember?

Her mom always gets one for her birthday.

- Oh, right. The house that bounces. Let's go there now.

- First let's talk about Mindy's present for a sec.

- Oh, right. A present for Mindy.

I've got it! Here we are.

The perfect Earth Day birthday present!

- Great. What is it?

- Ta da! - A spoon?

- Well, it can be from all of us, even though it was my idea.

And now, to the house of bounciness!

- Uh, Jet, Mindy might not want a spoon for her birthday.

- What? Not want a spoon?

What if someone gives her a bowl of soup?

- Hold on. Mindy is five,

so she probably wants a toy or a book.

- [chuckles] Good one, Sean.

How can she eat soup with a book?

- Guys, I have the perfect present

for us to give to Mindy.

- Ooh, goody. I love opening presents.

- Wait, it's Mindy's birthday,

so let's save this for her to open.

- So what did we get Mindy?

- I promise it's something she'll want more than anything.

- Don't be so sure. That's what I thought about the spoon.

- It's a space helmet.

- But why would Mindy need a space helmet

to jump in a bouncy house?

- It's not for the bounce house,

although that is a good safety idea.

This is for real outer space.

- Mindy? Isn't she still too little?

she can go past your yard?

- The moon? But that's so close.

- And not a planet.

- I know the Moon is a moon, not a planet, Sean.

But it's so amazing.

- You mean because we always see the same side of the Moon

here from Earth?

And you want to see the other side?

- That is cool, but not exactly why.

- Because you want to see the Apollo astronauts'

moon footprints up close?

- I know I do.

- That is also really neat.

But, no. That's not why I want to go.

down to Earth.

let's take her to the Moon!

Amy Mainzer!

- Thanks, Jet.

Earth's night sky is full of amazing things.

There's always something fun to see,

even if you live in the middle of a big city

with bright lights, like I do.

For one thing, you can see the Moon!

When it's up, the Moon is usually the brightest thing

in the night sky.

The Moon's covered with craters

and dark splotches.

Even though the Moon looks

like it's changing shape every night, it's really not.

Moonlight is just reflected sunlight,

and we see different amounts of that lit-up surface

as the Moon goes around the Earth.

It's fun to draw the Moon from night to night

and see how different it looks from our point of view.

Another thing you can see in the night sky are the stars.

You can see some twinkling

even if you're in a big city.

If you wait a couple of hours,

you can see that they appear to move across the night sky,

just like the sun does during the daytime.

And sometimes you can see other planets

in our solar system,

like Venus, Jupiter, Mars, or Saturn.

They look like bright stars,

but they don't really twinkle.

That's Saturn.

If you can get to a place that has a darker night sky,

you might be able to see a glowing band

that stretches across the sky.

That's our Milky Way galaxy,

and that band is actually an enormous collection of stars.

So the next time it's a clear night,

make sure you go outside and look up.

There's always something to see in the night sky.

- Thanks, Amy.

Higher than my bounce house!

This must be that low gravity thing

you always talk about, Sean.

- Yep, pretty cool, right?

- But, huh. No air.

Guess that's why I need a helmet.

I have to bring my own air to breathe here.

both: Right. - See, Stuffy?

You're lucky you don't have to breathe,

so you don't need a helmet like I do.

[gasps]

Whoa. Is that the Earth?

- Yup. We're on the side of the Moon

that always faces the Earth.

- So it's always up there. - Oh my gosh. Hi, Earth!

It's just like I dreamed it would be.

Wow, but it looks so small!

- Weird, huh? I get a little nervous if I think about it

being this far from home.

- Yeah. It's really different

to see Earth from somewhere else.

- Now you know how every astronaut feels.

From the Moon, the Earth looks small too.

- Mm-hmm. It's all about perspective.

- [squeaks]

- I guess perspective means when you're far away,

Earth looks like a little blue marble.

But you know what I really want?

To have a tea party on the Moon.

- What a perfect way to celebrate your birthday.

- [squeaking]

- Whoa!

- And here's your Earth day birthday tea set, Mindy.

- Goodie! Thanks, you guys. Wow, Stuffy Bear.

Everything on the Moon is so strange and different.

No air to breathe, but at least

we're having my birthday tea party.

That's the one thing that would be the same as on Earth.

- Or will it?

- [squeaking]

- Why thank you, Sunspot. I would like some tea.

[gasps] My teacup!

[gasps]

Huh?

It fell kind of slowly.

And just bounced, and didn't break.

What's going on, Sean?

- Remember how low gravity means

you can bounce really high?

- It also means if something falls, it falls really slow.

- Wow, we're really not on Earth anymore.

[hissing]

- [gasps] Huh? What happened to the tea?

- Huh. It looks like on the Moon,

liquid water--

- Or liquid tea--

- Becomes something else entirely.

- Hmm. Ooh! Makes a kind of...

icy steam.

- Wow. Why does it do that?

- Well, on Earth, water can stay liquid.

and there's not enough air, this happens.

all: Wow!

- [squeaks]

- So I guess we're having iced tea?

And yeah, there's no air on the Moon, so I need this helmet.

- Yeah, even if we could get the tea to stay liquid

in the cups, we couldn't hold them up to our mouths

and drink.

- We need helmets to breathe.

But what if I could take this racquetball to Pluto?

- Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer,

and today we're gonna have some fun with temperature.

I've got a way to change the temperature to make it colder

than any place on Earth, even your freezer.

But first, I gotta put on some very special protective gear,

and definitely do not try this at home.

This bowl has ultra-cold liquid nitrogen in it.

Let's see what happens when we drop this racquetball in.

Watch this.

[laughs]

Wow, what happened?

By soaking the little racquetball in liquid nitrogen,

we made it so cold that it basically shattered

like a piece of glass when I hit it with the hammer.

That wouldn't happen if the racquetball was warm.

But by lowering its temperature,

we can make it very, very brittle.

But there's one last little thing I want to try

since we got all this liquid nitrogen here.

The flower froze because it contains a lot of water,

and liquid nitrogen is so cold that it freezes water instantly

making the flower brittle as an ice cube.

So the next time you see a rose, just remember,

if it's at a low enough temperature,

it can shatter like glass.
