Roy: Anne,
Roy: would you accept my love and consent to marry me?
Anne: I can't.
Anne: I can't.
Anne: I can't marry you.
Anne: I can't!
Roy: Why can't you?
Anne: Because—I don't care enough for you.
Roy: So you've just been amusing yourself?
Anne: No, no, I haven't.
Anne: I did think I cared. Truly I did.
Anne: But I know now I don't.
Roy: You have ruined my life.
Anne: Forgive me.
Roy: You can give me no hope?
Roy: You are the only woman I can ever love.
Roy: I thank you for your friendship, at least.
Roy: Goodbye.
Chapter
It's the Birthdayof Our Happiness
Philippa: How did it go?
Anne: Wait. Wait till you hear what I have to say.
Anne: Roy asked me to marry him.
Anne: And I refused.
Philippa: Y-You refused him?
Anne: Oh, Phil, don't scold me. You don't understand.
Philippa: I certainly don't understand.
Philippa: You've encouraged Roy in every way all this time,
Philippa: and now you tell me you've refused him.
Philippa: Then you've just been flirting scandalously with him.
Philippa: I couldn't have believed it of you.
Anne: I didn't! You don't understand!
Philippa: Then, why?
Anne: Oh, I can't explain it to you any more than I could to him.
Philippa: Well, I suppose there is no use in saying anything to you.
Anne: No, there is no need. I've spoiled everything.
Anne: Roy despises me, and you despise me,
Anne: and I despise myself.
Philippa: You poor darling.
Philippa: Forgive me, Anne.
Philippa: Just come here and let me comfort you.
Philippa: I've no right to scold you.
Philippa: Oh, why must things be so complicated and mixed up in real life?
Dorothy: Roy is feeling terribly just now.
Dorothy: I have to listen to his outpourings every day.
Dorothy: But he'll get over it.
Dorothy: He always does.
Dorothy: He's had to give up on love twice before.
Dorothy: And he got back on his feet.
Roy: You are the only woman I can ever love.
Dorothy: So I don't think you need worry.
Dorothy: I did want you for a sister, but this won't spoil our friendship, will it?
Anne: No, indeed not, Dorothy.
Dorothy: Oh, good! I'll write to you.
Dorothy: Remind me. Your family home is...
Anne: In Avonlea on Prince Edward Island.
Anne: It's called Green Gables.
Marilla: Anne! You're home.
Anne: What has happened to the old Snow Queen, Marilla?
Marilla: Oh, it was rotten at the core.
Marilla: It blew down in the big gale we had in March.
Marilla: That tree was there ever since Matthew and I were young.
Anne: I'll never look from the porch gable window again without a sense of loss.
Anne: Well, tell me all the Avonlea news.
Lynde: There isn't much news except what we've wrote you.
Marilla: Rachel, have you told Anne the news about Jane?
Anne: What's happened to Jane?
Lynde: Jane Andrews is going to be married to a Winnipeg millionaire.
Anne: Dear old Jane! I'm so glad.
Anne: She deserves the good things of life.
Lynde: Oh, Jane's a nice enough girl.
Lynde: But she isn't in the millionaire class.
Lynde: Her engagement ring is a diamond cluster so big
Lynde: that it looks like a plaster on Jane's fat paw.
Anne: I think you're being unkind.
Lynde: Am I, now?
Marilla: Rachel minds that you're not spoken for by anyone yet.
Anne: My just desserts. I've ruined every chance I had.
Marilla: You mean that fellow Roy?
Anne: Yes. I'm going to face the punishment for what I've done.
Marilla: You tormenting yourself won't do anybody any good.
Marilla: What has Gilbert Blythe been doing to himself at college?
Marilla: I saw him when he came home last week,
Marilla: and he is so pale and thin I hardly knew him.
Anne: He studied very hard last winter.
Anne: He's going to start themedical course at Redmond,
Anne: so I think he's rather run down.
Anne: You know he took the Cooper Prize.
Anne: It hasn't been taken for five years!
Lynde: And you took Highest Honors in English.
Lynde: Jane Andrews could never have managed that.
Anne: Mrs. Lynde!
Anne: How is Diana?
Anne: It is lonely coming home without her here to welcome me.
Marilla: Diana has something else to think of just now.
Marilla: You must have heard.
Marilla: Why don't you go and see her yourself?
Anne: My! Isn't he delightful!
Diana: Look! Anne's come home.
Anne: He looks just like Fred!
Diana: Before he came, I wanted a girl, so that I could call her Anne.
Diana: But now that little Fred is here, I wouldn't exchange him for a million girls.
Mrs. Allan: "Every little baby is the sweetest and the best."
Mrs. Allan: If little Anne had come, you'd have felt just the same about her.
Diana: Yes, Mrs. Allan, you're exactly right.
Diana: I can hardly wait till he gets old enough to talk.
Diana: I just long to hear him say "mother" with a smile.
Minister: ...in sickness and in health...
Philippa: Mother thinks it's terrible.
Minister: ...in good times and in bad...
Philippa: She thinks Jo might at least take a church in a decent place.
Philippa: But the wilderness of the Patterson slums
Philippa: will blossom like the rose for me if Jo is there.
Philippa: Oh, Anne,
Philippa: I'm so happy my heart aches with it.
Anne: I'm surrounded by happiness, Matthew.
Anne: Yes, of course, Matthew.
Anne: I'm happy, too.
Anne: "I've tried the world—it wears no more"
Anne: "The colouring of romance it wore."
Marilla: See here, Davy. Not a word to Anne about—
Anne: I'm back!
Marilla: Oh, Anne. You're home.
Davy: It's good to see you again.
Lynde: Come in.
Dora: Welcome home, Anne.
Marilla: I see you're drenched.
Lynde: How was the wedding?
Anne: Oh, Phil was radiant.
Anne: Everyone was so nice, I stayed longer than I meant to.
Anne: "East, west, home's best."
Anne: Davy, have you been growing again lately?
Davy: Yeah. I've growed a wholeinch since you left.
Davy: I'm as tall as Milty Boulter now.
Davy: Say, Anne, did you know that Gilbert Blythe is dying?
Marilla: Davy!
Anne: Gilbert is... what?
Davy: Like I said, he's dying.
Marilla: Davy!
Lynde: Anne, don't look like that—don't look like that!
Marilla: We didn't mean to tell you so suddenly.
Anne: Is it true?
Marilla: Gilbert is very ill.
Marilla: He took down with typhoid fever just after you left for Bolingbroke.
Marilla: The doctor said he'd been terribly run down.
Marilla: But while there's life, there's hope.
Davy: Mr. Harrison said they had no hope of him.
Marilla: Davy!
Davy: Well he did!
Anne: Gilbert is dying.
Anne: Gilbert is...
Anne: If Gilbert goes away from me,I cannot live, either.
Anne: Yes, I know now.
Anne: I... I...
Anne: You're not...
Anne: who I want.
Ideal Man: You've always loved Gilbert, haven't you?
Ideal Man: Since you were children.
Ideal Man: It's too late now.
Ideal Man: If you hadn't been so foolish, you would have the right to go to him now.
Ideal Man: You could have had the bitter solace
Ideal Man: of being with him at the last.
Ideal Man: But Gilbert will leave this life never knowing that you loved him.
Ideal Man: Sad, despondent, thinking you never cared.
Anne: No!
Anne: No! No!
Anne: I love him!
Anne: I love... I love Gilbert!
Anne: I do love him! I do!
Anne: So please...
Anne: don't take him from me.
Ideal Man: Gilbert will leave this life never knowing that you loved him.
Anne: Without Gilbert...
Anne: nothing is of any value.
Anne: Excuse me...
Anne: Excuse...
Anne: I beg your pardon!
Anne: Don't you work for George Fletcher, who lives next door to the Blythes?
Pacifique: That I do.
Anne: Did you come from George Fletcher's this morning?
Pacifique: Sure!
Pacifique: Mr. Fletcher hired another boy to help with the work.
Pacifique: He gets to Bright River on the first train.
Pacifique: I'm going through the woods for a shortcut.
Anne: Th-Then...
Anne: Did you hear how Gilbert Blythewas this morning?
Pacifique: Gilbert?
Pacifique: He's better.
Pacifique: The worst is behind him.
Pacifique: The doctor says he'll be all right any day now.
Pacifique: Well, I must hurry.
Anne: Oh, thank goodness.
Anne: I...
Anne: I can't thank you enough!
Anne: "Weeping may endure for a night"
Anne: "but joy cometh in the morning."
Gilbert: Hello, Anne.
Anne: Gilbert!
Anne: How do you feel?
Gilbert: Much better, thanks to you.
Gilbert: I've come to ask you to go for one of our rambles.
Gilbert: Do you remember the old apple tree we went to see before we left for college?
Anne: Yes, of course.
Anne: But have you forgottentoday is Jane's wedding?
Anne: I've got to do something to this dress.
Gilbert: Well, can you go tomorrow afternoon, then?
Anne: Yes, I think so.
Gilbert: I'll never forgive Jane for not inviting me to her wedding.
Anne: You really can't blame her when you think of all her relations.
Anne: The house can hardly hold them all.
Gilbert: Is it true she'll wear so many diamonds
Gilbert: that you can't tell where the diamonds end and Jane begins?
Anne: I'll tell you once I've seen her.
Gilbert: Good.
Gilbert: Well, I'll be up tomorrow.
Gilbert: Hope you'll have a nice time tonight.
Anne: Thank you.
Anne: Gilbert!
Anne: Let's go for that ramble now, after all.
Gilbert: What about your dress?
Anne: I'll manage it somehow.
Anne: Today is too lovely to waste not walking with you.
Anne: This moment will never come again.
Anne: My!
Anne: It's all in bloom!
Gilbert: Yes. I can hardly wait for the fruit come fall.
Anne: True.
Anne: I feel as though old dreams might return in the midst of all this beauty.
Gilbert: Have you any unfulfilled dreams, Anne?
Anne: Of course. Everybody has.
Anne: None of us could never fulfill all of our dreams.
Anne: And we would be as good as dead if we had nothing left to dream about.
Gilbert: I have a dream.
Gilbert: Although it has often seemed to me that it could never come true,
Gilbert: I persist in dreaming it.
Gilbert: I dream of a home with a hearth-fire in it,
Gilbert: a cat and dog, the footsteps of friends,
Gilbert: and...
Gilbert: and you.
Gilbert: I asked you a question over two years ago.
Anne: I...
Anne: I...
Anne: I can't.
Gilbert: If I ask it again today,
Gilbert: will you give me a different answer?
Anne: B-But what about Christine?
Anne: I thought you loved Christine Stuart.
Gilbert: Christine was engaged to somebody in her hometown.
Gilbert: I knew her brother, and he asked me to look after her for a bit.
Gilbert: I knew college gossip credited us with being in love with each other,
Gilbert: but I didn't care after you told me you could never love me.
Gilbert: And Christine trusted me, anyway.
Gilbert: Anne, there never could be anybody else for me but you.
Gilbert: I've loved you ever since that day you broke your slate over my head in school.
Anne: I don't see how you could keep on loving me when I was such a little fool.
Gilbert: Well, I tried to s especially after Gardner came around.
Gilbert: I felt sure there was no chance for me then.
Gilbert: But I couldn't.
Gilbert: Then the day my fever broke, I got a letter from Phil Gordon—Phil Blake, rather.
Anne: Phil wrote to you?
Gilbert: Yes.
Gilbert: She told me there was really nothing between you and Roy
Gilbert: and advised me to "try again."
Gilbert: Well, the doctor was amazed at my rapid recovery after that.
Gilbert: Anne?
Anne: I can never forget the night I thought you were dying.
Anne: Oh, I knew—I knew then—
Anne: and I thought it was too late.
Gilbert: But it wasn't for either of us, Anne.
Anne: No.
Anne: It's the birthday of our happiness.
Anne: I've always loved apple blossoms,
Anne: and now they will be dearer than ever.
Gilbert: But I'll have to ask you to wait a long time.
Gilbert: It will be three years before I'll finish my medical course.
Gilbert: And even then there will be no diamond sunbursts and marble halls.
Anne: I just want you, Gilbert.
Anne: Sunbursts and marble halls may be all very well,
Anne: but there is more "scope for imagination" without them.
Anne: And as for the waiting, that doesn't matter.
Anne: We'll just be happy, waiting and working for each other—and dreaming.
Anne: Oh, dreams will be very sweet now.
Anne: Matthew, we're goingto be married.
Gilbert: We took the long way getting here,
Gilbert: but I promise I'll make her happy.
Anne: Thank you, Matthew.
Anne: I'm so glad I'm your daughter.
italicsAnne: Gracious Heavenly Father,
italicsAnne: thank you so much for my Green Gables,
italicsAnne: for bringing me here to wonderful Green Gables.
Anne: Thank you!
Anne: Yours respectfully, Anne Shirley.
