really want to stick your landings

because the floor is lava!

And then just try to, like, you know...

[woman screams]

[Rutledge] Three teams dare to make it
to the exit without falling in,

but it won't be easy,

because our room is flooded
with 80,000 gallons of lava.

Launch yourself
so you land onto the obelisk.

-[man] Here we go.
-[Rutledge] It'll take strategy,

strength and teamwork to succeed.

[man grunts]

Fall in and you're out.

But make it from the entrance to the exit
and your team earns a point.

-[woman] Jump, jump, jump.
-[all shriek]

The team with the most points
wins $10,000

and gets to meet me, Rutledge Wood.

Whoa!

[laughs]

This is amazing.

It's the hottest game show in history.

-Always wanted to go to the moon.
-[woman] Yeah, go. You got it.

-[man grunts]
-[woman] Oh!

This is... Floor is Lava.

What happens when you ask everyday people
to face some very unusual challenges?

We've redesigned rooms in a way
guaranteed to destroy resale value,

by replacing the floor with lava.

Three teams hope to cross
the least up-to-code room

ever constructed...

the Basement.

The Basement is crammed
with ancient artifacts to ascend

and mysterious relics to unravel.

Teams face numerous paths
to get from the start to the finish,

each with its own unique peril.

The first route that players face
rewards climbing skills and agility.

They must scale the ominous wall of bugs

while clinging to tiny handholds
and footholds.

That leads to the towering
ten-foot Easter Island heads

and the most treacherous leaps
in the room.

If they stick the landings,

they'll find themselves on the ark
and that much closer to the exit.

But there are other routes, like this one.

If they rely on brute power,
the crates may be more their speed.

They're up to six feet apart,
and require giant leaps of faith.

Succeed, and they're at the foot

of the most deceptively challenging
obstacle in the room, the pyramid,

where friction is low
and arm strength is key.

If they keep their balance,
they can attempt a leap to the ark.

But observant teams
could skip the pyramid

and head from the crates up and over
the massive elephant box.

There, they can pull
a mysterious staff off the wall.

It's a critical tool with countless uses,
if you can figure them out.

Back on the ark,

players will discover that the only way
to the exit is leaping to the cargo net,

hoping their upper body strength
doesn't give out

as their teammate turns the wheel
to move them to the exit.

But that's just the beginning
of the countless paths they can take

and artifacts they can use
to conquer this room.

They'll need to hurry,

because from the time
they step into the room,

the stairs will start to slowly sink
into the lava.

Our first team is a mother and her twins.

Meet Shadi, Talia and Bryce.

We're gonna win
because we are a close family

-and these two need money for college.
-[Talia and Bryce chuckle]

[Bryce] We're a good team
because we're twins

and we have that communication
and connection, and she's our mom.

She knows what's best for us
and how we work well together.

She used to be called Talia Ghul,
and he used to be Brycey Bear.

-Mom!
-[Shadi chuckles]

-She always embarrasses us...
-[Shadi] I don't.

I'm gonna miss Talia Ghul and Brycey Bear
so much when they go away to college,

and so we wanted to have
one last hurrah together

as a threesome
before they're off to college.

I'm looking forward to this.
We spend a lot of time together,

but this is one very interesting
and unique thing to do as a family.

Yeah, I'm excited.

It's like a good last hurrah
with my brother before we separate.

[Shadi] When we win the $10,000,

I'd like them to split the money
and use it at school

for however they please,
but there's a caveat to that.

You guys have to call me every Saturday,

you have to text me
when you're in trouble,

and I want to be your Facebook friends,

your Instagram friends,
your Snapchat friends.

So I can find out what's going on
in your lives while I'm at home.

[laughs]

Shadi and the twins enter
The Basement, a 120-by-60-foot room.

-[Talia] Oh, my God.
-[Shadi] Wow!

[Talia] It's huge.

[Shadi] Holy cow.

It's more than a little intimidating.

-Look at this.
-What?

[Talia] Bugs.

This is crazy! [chuckles]

[Rutledge on PA] Hello, guys.
For this game,

anything and everything
in this room is in play.

So, push and pull
whatever you think will help you.

Your aim is to get each player
to the exit,

and whichever team
gets the most people across wins.

Speed is of the essence, though,

because if there's a tie, the team
with the fastest time across wins.

And one final rule, don't fall in
because the floor is...

[all] Lava!

-[excited yelling]
-Oh, my God.

[Talia] One person does that.
Can you move that?

[Bryce] Yeah.

Stand up on that thing.

Is it really heavy?

[Bryce] It's heavy.

[Rutledge] Right away, they figured out
to use the painting,

but it weighs 30 pounds,
so it's not easy to move.

We have to put it as a bridge.

[Shadi] Is it long enough?

[Bryce] I dunno, let's try. Got it?

They're using the painting of
a bridge as an actual bridge.

Brilliant!

-[Shadi] Is she coming with you?
-Yeah.

Bryce is first to leave the nest

as he heads to the crates.

[Bryce] Go. Start going there.

Mom, heading onto the wall of bugs.

While the bugs may be distracting,

it's the two-inch wide lava-covered
handholds and toeholds

that are the real danger.

[Talia] I think you pull that rope.

[Shadi] Whoo-hoo!

-[Talia] Hold on.
-[Shadi] Check it out.

With the sarcophagus down,

Shadi now
can get onto the Easter Island heads.

It's the most direct path to the ark,
but it has the most difficult jump.

She got the...

Do you realize
these are real insects here?

-It's so gross.
-[Talia] Okay.

Ew! Oh, my God, there are spiders.

Those spiders may be scary,

but the true danger is in the transition
from the wall to the sarcophagus.

[Talia] It's too far...
It's too far down.

It's too high!

[Talia] Yeah, just... Yeah, you got it!
You're almost there!

-Yeah, nice!
-[Bryce] Got it.

What is taking you so long?

Why are you still there?

-Do you want me to try to...
-[Bryce] Yes.

[Talia] I can't.

[Shadi] My God. This is not easy.

-I made it, guys!
-[Bryce] Nice. Nice.

[Talia] What are you doing?

[Bryce] How are you gonna...

We have to put it on this one.

[Shadi] You guys, I want you to know,

this is so hard.

Shadi's sizing up
the second Easter Island head.

At ten feet tall, it's hard to climb onto
and it's even harder to get off of.

You got it?

No, I need to go on this, but...

-[Bryce] I know!
-[Shadi] I know what I gotta do.

[Bryce] All right, hang on.
I'm jumping over.

[Talia] Oh, my God.

I would not jump.

[Shadi] Oh, oh, oh.

-Bryce doesn't bother with the bridge.
-Slide that over.

Instead, he turns himself
into a human flying squirrel,

as he easily clears that six-foot gap
over the lava.

Well done, sir!

-You got this, Mom.
-[Talia] You got it, Mom!

I'm kind of really nervous.

One, two, three.

[grunts]

-[Talia] Okay, Mom.
-I don't know how...

I can't jump on it, and even if I do,
I'm gonna bash my face.

Mom, not loving her options.

-We'll put that there.
-This is so high up.

We're gonna go on the pyramid.

How am I gonna do this without falling in?

- You slide on.
-Are you sure?

I'll counterweight your body.

Guys, can I jump onto that?

-[Bryce] If you can, yeah.
-Let me hold on. It's slippery.

[Shadi] Hold on.

You got it, Talia.

[Bryce] You're good.

Talia's on the pyramid,
but it's a tricky place to leave.

The best way off
is to knock down the obelisk,

which will create a landing area
to jump onto.

All right, I'm gonna go for it.

[exclaims]

A jump from the head is risky...

Here I go.

...but going back
would cost valuable time.

I think I'd jump.
Yeah, 'cause I don't backtrack.

No one's doing this without falling in.

Here we go.

One, two, three...

[Shadi grunts]

Oh, my!

How did you do that?

Oh, my God, I did it, you guys!

Mamma mia, that's a jump!

But it comes at a cost.

Shadi landed pretty much
directly on her own chin.

Shadi's one tough mama.

After all, she did give birth to twins.

Mom, you got it?

Bryce, get the staff.

Yeah, hang on.

There's no way I can push that down.
I'm gonna fall into the lava.

All right, this thing does something.

Bryce has found the staff.

It's a vital item.

Without it, it's very challenging
to get to the exit.

-Okay, yeah.
-Mom, I'm gonna hand you this.

Let's see if this thing tips over.

Bryce may be onto something.

The staff can topple the obelisk,

but it also opens the lid of the ark,

which makes jumping onto the cargo net
much easier.

And they'll have to go on that net
to get to the exit door.

I can't.

It's way too slippery.

Shadi, using the staff
like a baseball bat.

You have to hit it at the top.

Okay!

Very, very top. Very top.

I'm not sure that's the best technique.

Yeah, hard, Mom. Hard!

Mom, at the top!

-[Bryce] Harder!
-At the very top.

[Bryce] It's not working.
We have to try something else.

Talia, you may have to
take one for the team.

I need to lift more weights!

Talia, you might have to take one
for the team, and just jump and push it.

Wait, did Bryce just ask
his own twin to sacrifice herself?

-We gotta try something.
-[Shadi] We need the point!

[Talia] I'm gonna fall in.

There are heroes, and then there is Talia.

Talk about a team player.

With the obelisk down,
Bryce has got a clear path to the ark.

But the downside is that Talia's out.

They can only get a maximum
of two points now.

-[Shadi] Talia!
-I will avenge you!

-[Shadi] I'm so sorry!
-I will avenge you!

Let's go!

-Bryce, I'm gonna put this in.
-Yeah.

Shadi's noticed the staff
will fit in the hole.

-Mom...
-We're so close.

You can step on the things.
They're slippery. Careful.

Dancing across the narrow handle
of the ark

like a bird on a wire in shiny pants.

Make sure you have traction.
Keep pushing.

The lid's open.

Now it's much easier
to get onto the cargo net.

The cargo net is controlled either
by the pulley wheel or the crank.

Hanging on to that net is the only way
to get to the exit door.

-I'm gonna turn it.
-Yeah.

[grunts]

[Shadi] Wait. Hold on.

[Bryce] All right, are you ready?
Go! I'm ready!

Go! Go!

It's a 20-foot gap
between the ark and the exit door.

Why am I saying "go"?
I'm the one who has to do it.

Hold on, Bryce.
I'm going as fast as I can.

Oh, Mom, come on!

Come on. That's precious cargo!

Mom! Go!

I'm going. I swear I'm going! It's hard!

[Bryce] Keep going.

Mom's arms may be burning,

but if she can't go any faster,
it's gonna be Bryce who's on fire.

He's got to be in agony right now.

I can't let you fall in.
I already let one of you fall in.

[Bryce grunts]

[Shadi] Are you almost there?

[Bryce] Keep going! I'm almost there!

Bryce's foot, so close,

and to make matters worse,
his shoelace is untied.

Keep going! I'm almost there!
I got it!

Bryce has done it!
He's made it to safety.

That's one point for the team.

But Mom needs to hurry up.

Those stairs are sinking,

and if they disappear completely,

that jump will be two feet longer
than it was for Bryce.

-[Bryce] Come on!
-I'm trying, I swear.

Mom, you do Pilates for a reason!

It's obviously not working.

Time ticking away.

Remember, if there's a tie-breaker,

the fastest team across wins.

-[Bryce] Oh, my God.
-One step is gone.

That'll make
Shadi's transition from the cargo net

to the exit door even harder.

Hang on. Come on.

Come on. Hang on.

Those Pilates classes
are really paying off.

[Bryce] Come on. Hang on.

Yeah. This is for you, Talia!

-Take it, this is for Talia.
-This is for Tal.

This is for Talia! Come on!

Bryce needs to yank that crank
as fast as he can.

-Oh, my God.
-Don't think about it.

-We need the point.
-Don't think about the pain.

I'm thinking about Talia.

[Shadi groans]

Oh, my God. Is this as far as it goes?

The last step is still above
the lava, but it won't be for long.

No. It'll come.

Are you sure?

Bryce, reaching out for his mommy.

He just has to be careful
not to fall in himself.

-Got me?
-I got you.

[grunts] Come on. Get up.

Mommy's home! They have done it!

They have done it!

Talia!

I'm so proud.

[kiss]

-I'm so proud.
-[Bryce laughing]

An outstanding run.

Bryce led the way with his leaps across
the crates on the way to the staff.

Shadi proved that she was a supermom

when she did the amazing jump
across the Easter Island heads.

But it was Talia who provided
the most enduring memory of all

by sacrificing herself
to knock over the obelisk,

allowing Bryce and Shadi
to get across to the exit door.

It was an impressive display of teamwork.

I think we did enough.

We did the best we could.

There's stuff we could have
done better in the heat of the moment,

but we worked really well together.

This was one of
the cooler experiences I've ever done,

and to do it with my family
was really awesome.

Even though Mom was super embarrassing,
it was really worth it.

[Shadi laughs]

With their memorable effort,

Shadi and the twins
have taken control of first place

with two players across.

But there are still two teams
left to play.

For our next players, we've got something
even more rare than twins,

identical triplets
with identical fashion sense.

Say hello to Alex, Sean, and Mitchell,
the Virzi Triplets.

We got an edge over the other teams

because we've been competing
with each other for 26 years.

-Yep.
-We know what we're gonna do.

We're the closest teammates you could
physically and biologically have.

-[Alex] That's true.
-We are the same,

but different.

[blows air]

[Mitchell] Best way to tell us apart
is probably by the hairline.

the superior triplet our entire lives.

to how it is in our real life.

at this point in the course.

-Hopefully before the lava comes out.

Sean's onto the pyramid,

but it's a dangerous place to be.

As we saw with our last team,

Talia found herself trapped
on the pyramid.

I'm gonna fall.

Shadi tried to knock over
the obelisk by using the staff as a bat,

but she struck out,

-and Talia ended up in the lava.
-Oh, no! Talia!

Sean, you're gonna have to reach that,
the obelisk.

You're like the king of Egypt.

[Sean] Can I use the staff?

-[Alex] Pass it along if you can.
-Can you get it?

[Sean] I'm gonna try.

Sean, using the staff as a poker.

A different approach then Shadi
and the twins, but is it better?

[Alex and Mitchell] Yeah!

And boom goes the obelisk!
That is definitely better.

[Alex] Did you just knock down
the Washington Monument?

They knocked down that obelisk
much faster than Shadi and the twins,

and they didn't even lose a player.

-[Sean] All right.
-[Alex] Got it.

There's a hole in here.
I'm gonna shove it in.

-Do it.
-Put the staff in the hole.

[Alex] All right.

-Whoa!
-Whoa!

-[Alex] Dude!
-With the staff in the hole,

the lid of the ark is able to slide open,

and that will allow them
to get onto the cargo net

and then over to the exit door.

That makes it a lot easier.

[Mitchell] Should I go this way?

Boys! We need to move!

[Mitchell] I know!

Sean, you'll have to
work your way over here.

I can't hold myself up
and then go over there.

Use your muscles
that you worked so hard for!

He stopped working out last week.

-He's weak.

to the ark

to clear room for Sean
to get off the pyramid.

[Mitchell] Kobe! White man can jump.

[Alex] I'll wheel you across.

Alex, making his move to the pulley.

Mitchell, getting ready
to go on the cargo net.

Sean, still trapped on the pyramid.

Go! You good?

Yeah.

-[Alex] Just go! Don't show off!
-[Mitchell] Oh, sorry.

Mitchell, using every bit of strength
to hold on.

It's a good thing he didn't quit
his gym membership.

[groans]

-[Alex] You gotta move it.
-[Mitchell yelps]

[Alex] You're almost there.
Hold on a little longer.

Swing yourself over.
You gotta swing.

That first step,
almost completely covered by lava,

but maybe there's enough
for him to get on.

[Alex] Swing!

-Decide where you...
-[Sean] Fall forward!

[Mitchell] Can I go on this step?

Do it!

Mitchell, trying desperately
to be the first triplet across.

[Sean] Do it!

-No!
-[Sean] Oh, my God!

[yells] No!

Wow, let's see that again.

Only this time,
accompanied by classical music.

[classical music playing]

[yells] No!

[yells] No!

With Mitchell down,
the best they can do now is tie.

Luckily for them, they're ahead of
Shadi and the twins on time.

So, if they do tie, the Virzi Triplets
would move into first place.

Okay, you need to find a way across.

I know.

[Alex] Maybe fall onto it?

[Sean] I...

Oh, no! Down goes Sean!

[yells] No!

And with that, the Virzi Triplets
have no chance of victory

and are out of the game.

I never saw that coming.

We sucked so bad. [chuckles]

That's very tragic.

But this is just the beginning
for the Virzi Triplets.

We will be a phoenix...

...rising from the ashes.

[all mimicking squawking]

There will be no rising up
out of the lava,

so Shadi and the twins
remain in first place.

But there's still one team left to play.

Our last team is three youth pastors
from Northern California.

Meet Katy, Jonny and Danny.

[Danny] Being quick on our feet
shouldn't be a problem.

When we're hanging with teens
all the time,

uh, if you're not a step ahead of them,
they'll get three steps ahead of you.

I've got two teenage boys.
They're 16 and 15,

and they're some of the best friends
I've got.

Both my boys are actually upset
that I'm here with them

and not bringing my own kids along.

Why are we here, Jonny?

Why are we here, Danny?

Why are we here, Danny?

[Danny chuckles]

-I signed them up without them knowing.
-[Jonny chuckles]

So, why we want to play this game
is we generally like working together.

We're really good teammates

in an office setting
and a ministry setting,

and in a life setting.
Our friendships are there.

We play a lot of office parkour.

And office parkour training
has led to this moment.

We also, every spring break,

take about 130 students to Mexico
and serve in Ensenada, Mexico.

So we do a lot of fun things together.

Let's put it this way.
If Danny wasn't a great boss,

and we didn't like and respect him,
we would not be here.

These three pastors have to get
three across to win outright,

or two across to tie.

In the case of a tie,
they'll have to beat a time of 8:49.

on the game clock.

despite having what seemed like a way off.

If Katy can use the staff
to push down the obelisk,

she's got a good chance
of getting off the pyramid,

and then they've got a great chance
of getting all three across

and winning outright.

Do you want to climb over that
to get to the ark?

Then we'll help Katy get over to the ark.

jump from the pyramid to the obelisk.

is going to be the cleanest. [grunts]

Katy needs to hurry,

the stairs are disappearing fast,
like her options.

-It's now or never, Katy.

[Danny] Dude, she's gone!

We gotta go!

With Katy out, the pastors
can't score three points,

but if both Danny and Jonny get across,

they still have a chance to win
if they get a move on,

because Shadi and the twins crossed in
eight minutes 49 seconds.

So, the pastors only have
a minute to get across.

[Rutledge] Now, Danny's off.

matching Shadi and the twins.

because they're neck-and-neck with where
Shadi and the twins were at this time.

The bottom step has already gone.

Without that step, Jonny might not be able
to make the exit.

couldn't make this jump,

and Jonny's just about his size.
