We have an age-old rivalry
in this episode.
Doctors versus nurses
versus emergency room patients.
The battle for dominance
will be settled in the Kitchen.
The Kitchen is a chef's fever dream
of appliances,
butcher blocks and pizza.
But if you make one mistake,
it won't just be your goose that's cooked.
That's why picking a right path from
the entrance to the exit is so important.
The first option requires a good grip.
If you've got strong hands
and can handle a skillet,
swing your way across the pot rack
to the pizza oven,
where pizza is your friend,
and useful items hide in plain sight,
if you can just think outside the box.
From there, just a few hops
across the barstools
will deliver you to the dining table.
But be careful,
those stools aren't as solid as they look.
If agility is your recipe for success...
there's another route for you:
Climb the imposing wall of knives.
But don't fret, those blades
have been adjusted for safety.
Once at the circular table,
you're just a mozzarella-stick ride away
from the dining table
and a shot at the exit.
The Kitchen is filled with countless
other options to get to the end,
including a secret to make
that final leap a lot easier.
Whichever path you choose,
you'll need to make it quick
because the stairs to the exit
are sinking,
making that last jump
tougher than a microwave pizza.
The first of three teams
that'll attempt to play with lava
is a trio of physicians.
Here are doctors Raf, Jennifer and DJ,
reporting for duty.
We know each other through work.
We're all physicians.
We sometimes share patient care.
We see young people,
we see very old people.
My motto is, "From the womb to the tomb,
we'll take care of you."
[Raf] We also all have children
about the same age.
We met five years ago
at a Halloween party.
You guys know each other
a bit more intimately than that.
-[Raf] We do.
-[Jennifer and DJ laugh]
Jen and I have been married over 11 years.
[Jennifer] Eleven years. Yes.
-It's been a long road.
-[all laugh]
[Jennifer] Raf and I have
three rambunctious young boys.
My kids and I love to play
the Floor is Lava.
We do it often at home.
My kids actually play the Floor
is Crocodiles, but there's some crossover,
and I haven't been eaten by
a crocodile yet, so I don't see a problem.
-[Jennifer laughs]
-Nurses are our competition today.
And I love nurses, but I don't care
if I'm going against my grandma,
she's going down.
The nurses are a great support
in the clinical setting, but that's it.
We're the docs, we call the shots.
That's how it is.
[Jennifer chuckles] Oh, my God!
Wow!
-[Jennifer] Holy...
-What is this place?
-What do you grab on to here?
-This is amazing.
What do you grab on to?
-[Raf] There's an oven there.
-[DJ] "Pizza is key."
One of us has to get to that pizza oven.
[Rutledge through PA] Hello, Doctors!
It's nearly time to operate.
Inside this kitchen,
everything is at your disposal.
So, probe, examine and manipulate
whatever you believe might assist
your trip across the lava.
Get to the exit, stat,
as the exit stairs slowly descend
until they are gone.
The team with the most players
through the exit wins.
Most importantly, do not touch the floor
because the floor is...
[all] Lava!
-Whoo!
-[Raf] Whoo!
[Jennifer] We're gonna try this over here.
-Do you want to give that a go?
-I don't know if I can reach it.
[DJ] Do you want Raf to go first
so he can help you?
Put your foot on to see if it's wobbly.
-It's not wobbly.
-You don't want any surprises.
I don't know if can reach this.
Are we dividing and conquering?
How is it? Is it stable?
[Jennifer] Yeah.
[Rutledge narrating]
Jen's in for a huge surprise
if she doesn't realize there's gaps
between the footholds along the wall.
[Jennifer] Okay, I'm trying.
[Raf] Watching her.
-Watch your footing.
-[Jennifer] I'm trying.
Do I have a place here to put my foot?
[Raf] Yeah.
But it's interrupted. It's broken up.
There's a smaller step coming up now.
Does she have the reach
to get to that step?
[DJ] Go more left.
[Raf] A bit more left.

[DJ] I think you should help her there.

a slide to avoid a slip and fall.

DJ, a pain management doctor,
aching for a way on to that pot rack.
He's on!
And he's a beast!
Look at him shaking down that pot rack
like it owes him money.
-Wow!
-[Jennifer] Way to go, Deej!
-[Raf] Great job, DJ. Wow!
-[Jennifer] Whoo!
-[Raf] Careful.
-[Jennifer yelps]
-All right, Jen. You can do this.
-Okay.
[Jennifer] Oh, yes, baby! Raffa.

-[Raf] Be careful.
-[Jennifer] All right.
[Jennifer squeals]
[screams]

-[Raf sobs jokingly]
Oh, Jen lunged for the table,
but her efforts delivered her to the lava.
[screams]
[Raf] I need something
to get a good grip on.
Newly single Dr. Raf, taking the same path
that just consumed his wife.
That is kind of a stretch.
A little challenging.
He's having more trouble
with that move than his wife did.
What can I do here,
so I can extend my grip.
Oh, that's not gonna help.
[grunts]
All right, I'm making my way.
I'm stretching.
Alrighty. This is a stretch.
Go for the chair with your left foot
and your right foot on the table.
-My left foot, huh?
-[DJ] Left foot on that chair.
Yeah.
Alrighty.
[DJ] That way you have something
to dig into.
I gotta dig in to it.
-Push off with it.
-There's enough cushion to get a grip.
All right, here we go.
[DJ] That's it. Nice!
Oh! Lava, drenching his lower half.
[Raf] All right.
-[DJ] See if you can get...
-[Raf] Mmm.
You hungry? You want some?
[DJ chuckles] Sure.

Doctors, stopping for a lunch break.
They may want to hurry
since time determines tiebreakers.
Don't get your hands too greasy.
-Yeah.
-This stuff is greasy.

Hopefully, the inner child
doesn't play with lava.
[Raf] Okay.
Alrighty. So, I gotta
hang on to the ropes.
Diagnostic radiologist Raf, at work.
Is it mozzarella or provolone? Hmm.
-Okay. Ready?
-Go for it.
I think I have to go for it.

three...
-Oh, no.
-[DJ] Come on.
"Oh, no" is right.
The stairs to the exit may be gone soon,
making that last jump
a very difficult operation.
[grunts] Okay.
[exclaims]
I need a little bit more momentum.
Spot-on diagnosis from Dr. Raf.
-And he makes it!
-[DJ] Nice.
With that confident dismount,
Dr. Raf demonstrates how,
on this team, he is the big cheese.
Dr. Raf needs to go now while
there's still one stair above the lava.
-[DJ] Do it! See if you can jump it.
-Run for it?
And the doctor is in!
[Raf] You can do this.
There's a hole in this table.
You know what?
It looks like it might separate.
-What do you mean?
-Maybe we need a key.
Oh, yeah.
DJ saw the "Pizza is Key" sign earlier.
And he's off! DJ has come alive!
[Raf] You got this.
You got it, buddy.
You know, if this stair disappears...
I could try to help you
get into this doorway.
What's in there?
DJ, digging inside
the pizza oven and comes out with...
All right!
...pizza!

Looks good. Pepperoni?
Oh!
Oh! Pepperoni and lava.
-All right, DJ, the stair's gone, buddy.

The stair is gone.
The stairs are indeed gone,
making that key even more important.
Oh, wow!

If those stairs were here,

Looks like a harder jump that way.

of lava, that is.

very angry.

That was awesome.
Wow!
If you land on the table,
just flatten out.
Two jumps stand between
Dr. DJ and the exit.
The jump he's looking to make
to that dining table is four feet,
and what's worse,
that chair he's jumping from swivels!
-Oh, no!
-No! DJ!
No!
Taking home the gold medal
in self-mutilation
is Dr. DJ with
an incredibly painful dismount.
In the face!
[sobs jokingly] No! Not again. Oh, God.
His team has one point, though.
Yes! Whoo-hoo! I did it!
A 33% survival rate for the Doctors
as Dr. Jen went into the lava
with ten cc's of Chinese food.
Her husband, Dr. Raf, however,
had good fortune...
-"Your inner child will play today."
-[DJ] All right.
...and kept his cheese together
all the way to the end
to score a point for his team.
And physically impressive Dr. DJ
took himself for a spin
and a painful goodbye into the lava.
I think we may have a chance
-'cause of what you've done so far.
-Yeah.
Singular effort was awesome from you.
We call the shots.
The nurses do all the work.
They're indispensable.
We love 'em, but today they're going down.
[Jennifer and DJ laugh]
The Doctors are on board,
but nurses are waiting in the wings,
and one point isn't exactly
a diagnosis for success.
Our next team to take on
this culinary course
are three professional caregivers
who have a bone to pick with the Doctors.
Meet the Nurses.
We are orthopedic registered nurses.
We work with joint replacements,
and hip fractures and bones.
Nurses do way more work than doctors,
and if you say doctors do more work,
then you must be a doctor.
[laughs]
[Jessica] We're a good team because
we all bring something great to the table.
I do CrossFit, and I love CrossFit
'cause it's competitive and it's fun.
I'm a runner, so I run half marathons.
Endurance is mostly my specialty.
I weight train, and I've actually
gained 20 pounds of muscle.
We play the Floor is Lava,
and we have to jump up onto ropes
and onto benches
and even the rig sometimes.
[Jessica] I feel like having a nurse mom,
people think that we're warm and cuddly,
but it's more like put some dirt on it
and move on.
We're a lot nicer to our patients
than I guess to our children.
Oh, my gosh. [laughs]
[Mariah] We can do this.
-Um, okay. There's a lot of lava.
-[Felicia] Okay.
[Rutledge through PA] Hello, Nurses!
As you make your rounds, be sure
not to fall because the floor is...
[all] Lava!
[Rutledge narrating]
And the nurses' shift has begun!
-[Jessica] No!
-[laughs]
Oh, wow.
I don't even know...
-How the heck am I gonna get up there?
-I don't know.
Uh, very carefully.
That is really high.
All right, that looks pretty safe.
-Okay.
-Let me see if this is safe.
-Hold on. No, that's not safe.
-[Jessica] No.
That looks slippery.

a set of monkey bars. She's crushing it!

The island is within reach.
Mariah struggles to operate
on that pot rack,
while Dr. DJ had the prescription
for success.

Let's hope she fares better
than that pot
that just flew off the rack
and into the lava.
[shrieks]
Oh! Code blue, code blue!
Nurse is down! Nurse is down!
Mariah gets to the edge,
but there is no glory.
She might need a doctor.
It's impossible to nurse that landing
back to health.
And no time for tears from these nurses.
I don't know how the heck
this is gonna work.
Jessica, focusing on her three-foot move,
oblivious to teammate Felicia.
[chuckles]
[Jessica exclaims]
And Felicia solos that dismount.
Oh! Lava, erupting like an emergency room
on a Saturday night.
Jess, she can!
The nurse succeeded
with a conservative route,
where the doctor's brass choice
ended with failure.
Ooh, smart, Felicia's using a drawer
to cut down the distance.
[Felicia] Ooh!
Do you want help?
-No.
-No? You don't want help?
-No.
-[Jessica] Okay.
All right. Here goes nothing.
Ah, no!
-Whoa! Fake out.
-[Felicia] You can do it. Come on.
-Come on.
-Felicia's showing support.
-Come on.
-Kind of.
[Jessica] All right, cheese curd.
And she's off, sliding
that gouda to the dining table, stat.
Got it.
-Oh! What a gouda move.
-Anything in here?
That book is useless without
the pizza key that they overlooked.
But it doesn't matter.
There's still two stairs up.
Jessica needs to go now.
And she makes it!
Nurse Jessica finished the course
faster than Dr. Raf,
so the Doctors are out.
Go back as far as you can on the table!
But, with one team remaining,
the Nurses need every point they can get.
And she's on. Look at that cheese go.
Come on.
Power!
Look at that cheese go... backwards.
[Felicia] Wow.
And that last stair
is dipping below the lava.
Felicia needs to harness the 20 pounds
of weight-training muscles she's put on
and give herself a solid push.
A lot more momentum this time.
Can she?
[Felicia shrieks]
She made it! Yes!
-Do you think you can make it?
-Oh, man.
But those exit stairs are gone.
With one team left, the Nurses need
all the points they can get.
Do you think you could jump to that chair?
And then you could try... Oh.
"Pizza is key."
But how does she get to the pizza?
[Jessica] Do you want to try
and get to the chair?
Should I try for that one?
Just hug the back of the chair when you
jump on it, and try and straddle it.
Okay. No.
Push off the edge of the table
instead of the top, so it's not slippery.
This is hard to watch.
Nothing good has come of those barstools.
Yes! And she makes it!
[Felicia] I didn't know
that was gonna happen.
Felicia steps off
the dining table and on to the barstool,
only to find that the barstools spin,
and that she's stepped into... a trap!
[Felicia] Oh, man.
Can you stand on the back
of the chair to reach that?
Felicia needs to get that key.
[Felicia] We gotta figure this out right.
-[exclaiming]
-[Jessica] No pressure.
Get it, girl!
You got it. Just try.
-[Jessica shrieks]
-Oh! Another nurse is down!
A gutsy move from the nurse,
but that was doomed from the start.
And just like the doctor,
this nurse has flatlined.

Even though they tied,
The Nurses have beaten the Doctors,
because they ran the course quicker.
If the next team of Party Animals
fall in the lava,
the Nurses could take this.
All we can think about is just
hoping no one else makes it to the top.
The final team to attack
the Kitchen is made up of three buddies
who met in high school, who love to party.
Here are the Party Animals.
-We're number one. We're number one.
-We're... Oh, I hate you guys.
[all laugh]
[Ryan] We met in middle school/high school
and just did a lot of sports together:
football, track....
We started working out together when
we were probably around 16 years old,
and ever since then,
we all haven't really stopped.

I've done it multiple times.

-It's just more of a fun factor, I guess.
-[Ryan laughs]
