01x09 - The Bedroom: Level 2

Welcome. Today, three teams will try
and make it across the master bedroom.

It's often a place
where we Netflix and chill,

but our teams have to stay alert.

And there's only one rule:

Don't fall.

Why? Because the floor is lava!

Oh, come on!

Aw, man!

Oh, that always happens.

I'm not a contestant. I'm the host.

[Rutledge narrating] In this episode,
we're going back to the Bedroom,

something I do almost every night.

The first attempts to cross this room
weren't pretty.

Half the players failed.

[woman screams]

It was too slippery...

No!

[screams]

...too dizzying, and too much
for most players to survive.

[screams] No!

But this is Level Two,
so we're going even harder.

For the first time
in Floor is Lava history,

there are only two players per team.

We also added a booby-trap rope
to make things even more difficult.

It's time to get busy in the Bedroom,

on Floor is Lava.

Our first team
is two friends from California

who like to hoop it up together.

Say hello to Alyssa and Janine,
the Basketballers.

I have been playing basketball
since I was very young.

Like, I was never going to go to the WNBA,
you know what I mean?

But it's fun and I enjoy it.

[Alyssa] People ask me to be on the team
because I'm tall,

but then they don't know
about what goes on with my body

-and it's not that good.
-[both chuckle]

It's not.

I am actually very clumsy.

[chuckles]

This is what we're working with.

-Can I just... Can we recast?
-No, Janine.

[Janine] I'm a professional beatboxer.
I do beatboxing and rapping.

[beatboxing]

[laughing] I dance. I'm a dancer.

I dance to Janine's beatboxing.

-No one is better than us.
-No one is better than us.

-We came here to win.
-We came here to win.

-And we're gonna win.
-And we're gonna win.

And nobody... Which hand?

This one.

-Two, three, one, one, one...

[both screaming]

It's time for tip off.

Oh, my gosh.

Okay, we gotta come up here.

Oh, my gosh.

Janine, this literally looks
like a pool of blood.

-Our blood!
-It's not blood. No, it's lava.

-Okay.
-I don't want to do this.

-This is fine.
-I changed my mind.

I don't think we can.

-[Rutledge on PA] Hello, Basketballers!
-[both] Hi.

The rules are simple.

Each player who gets across
is worth a point.

The team with the most points wins,

and most importantly,
don't fall, because the floor is...

[both] Lava!

[both scream]

I knew it!

[Alyssa] Oh, my God! That bed...

That bed is the worst.

What should I do?
Tell me what to do, boss.

-I don't want to tell you what to do!
-Tell me!

-I think I'm gonna go this way.
-Go.

I feel like I could climb on these.

Yes. Do it.

I love you. [chuckles nervously]

-Okay. All right.
-Um, okay.

-Oh! What is this?
-It moves, it moves.

-Can I do this?
-Dude, I got you.

Okay.

[Alyssa gasps and shrieks]

Yes! Yes!

I love it. I love this. I love this.

[Rutledge narrating] Janine's across,
but that curtain is a one-way ride.

Give that back to me.

-I can't.
-Should I just go this way?

-Okay.
-Yeah.

Okay. All right.

I'm so scared I'm gonna fall off of it!

You're not. You'll land right on it.

Okay.

-[screams]
-Yes!

It's a little early
to celebrate that hard.

[screams]

[Janine] Okay.

Janine, crawling along the landing.

At nine inches wide,
it's the same diameter as a basketball.

[Alyssa shrieks]

I hate this whole place.

I'm just gonna jump on the bed.

I don't know where else to go.

-You can, you can.
-[gasping]

You can, you can, you can.

It's a five-foot jump to the bed

and those bedposts are spinning
at ten revolutions per minute.

-You can do it.
-I feel like I'm in a video game.

I'm not a person anymore.

You gotta just time it to when it's flat.

Not yet.

I think I'm gonna cry.

Don't cry, please.

It will be so awkward
for everyone if you cry.

Please don't cry!
I'm a sympathetic crier.

If you cry, I'll cry,
people at home will cry.

-[Janine] Yeah! Yes!
-Oh!

I'm gonna get this!

Oh!

[gasps] Oh, my...

Now that she's on the bed,
Alyssa needs to get off it.

She could get onto the side table
or the ottoman,

or she could fall in the lava.

Three options, really.

-No! There's no balance here!
-[Janine] I can't help you.

Alyssa, looking really uncomfortable...

Oh, no!

No!

...but managing to wave
like the Queen of England.

[Janine] I got nothing for you,
but I'm gonna go over...

[Alyssa screams]

You have to go there.

It's four feet
from the ottoman to the vanity.

Oh!

Alyssa, trying a very novel approach,

and it looks like she's stuck.

-No!
-Never saw that coming.

Wait! Stay there. I'll help you.

[gasps and screams]

[gasps] Okay. Okay.

Now, trying a more standard approach.

[yelps]

[Janine] Okay. Okay,
push it down, push it down.

-What?
-[Janine] Build a bridge, build a bridge.

-Yes!
-It's heavy! Oh, my God.

Down goes the mirror.

Now what, though?

Extending the vanity makes it easy
to step on the chandelier,

assuming it's been lowered,
which it hasn't.

We have to go to the bed
to that, to that, to that.

Why?

Because how are you gonna get
all the way over there?

I don't know. Okay.

The only way to lower the chandelier
is to undo the rope by the mantel,

but getting there is no layup.

[Janine] And you have to go there.

Um...

-Whoa!
-[chuckles]

[screams]

Yes!

Say what you will about her athleticism,

Alyssa definitely has team spirit.

[Janine] Okay.

Okay. I need you to try
and jump on the bed

-'cause I don't know if I can do it again.
-Jump on that?

Look at those bedposts,

a fearsome foursome of defenders

just waiting to knock a jumper
into the lava.

How do I get on it?

-You just go now?
-Jump, use your body. Yeah, yeah.

[both scream]

And Janine's on!

[Janine] Whoo!

Crawling unsteadily to the bedpost,

she'll find no rest on this bed.

Jump on that!

-How?
-Jump on that.

The first time we had teams
go through this bedroom...

Ready? Here we go.

Little League dad Scott
took some high heat to the head.

Will Janine fare better?

-I'm gonna... I'm so naus.
-You've got it!

That dizziness is such a factor
on the spinning bed.

Hold on to that!

Look at all that lava.

[Alyssa] Okay, do it quick!

That thing is so sturdy.
That thing is sturdy.

[Janine] Ah!

Oh, no!

[screams]

Janine has committed the most costly
turnover of all,

falling into the lava.

A professional beatboxer to the end,

Janine kept spinning round, round,
baby, right round,

and she even managed to high-five Alyssa,

and then she dropped it like it was hot,
which of course it was...

since it's lava.

Now it's all up to Alyssa
to put a point on the board.

Okay. That's it.

Alyssa, enough.

Enough!

Alyssa, giving herself a pep talk,
channeling her inner Coach K.

[grunts]

Now facing the same
jump that took Janine...

[Alyssa exhales sharply]

...can she do it?

-She can!
-Oh!

Who?

I don't trust anybody in this world
except myself!

Alyssa, reaching for
powerful personal epiphanies.

Okay. Okay. Okay.

Janine...

this is for you.

Trying to honor her friend with
a seven-foot jump to the chaise lounge.

[exhales sharply]

From downtown!

[screams]

Oh, no!

Her tribute has fallen short,

bouncing off the chaise lounge
like a skyhook clanking off the rim.

It was a valiant effort,

but human beatboxer Janine
got dropped like a dubstep bassline.

Alyssa tried to play one-on-one
with the room,

but she couldn't cross over
the chaise lounge.

[screams]

I never want to see lava again.

I never want to hear the word "lava"
again.

If I go somewhere and they say,
"I have a lava cake.

It's free, delicious
and it's chocolate,"

I'll say, "Get the heck outta here.
I don't want nothin' to do with it."

I'll be honest.

I would eat the free lava cake,

but that's because I really like cake.

That's fair.

And with that, the Basketballers

have taken a trip to the final floor.

They are out of the big dance,

but there are still two more teams
left to come.

Up next, two bouldering buddies
who hope to scale to new heights.

Say hello to Kendall and Austin,
The Climbers.

We climb different kinds of walls.

We go indoors.

We go almost every night together,
and then on the weekends,

-we go outside.
-Or the week.

Bouldering is our primary.
Sometimes, we get some sport climbing in.

We like the short powerful moves
that just make you feel so strong.

We're gonna do whatever we can
to have a good time.

Let's be honest.

Rock climbers are giant children.

We just want to have fun,
climb weird stuff and just giggle.

[chuckles]

We brought a secret weapon
that's gonna help us win.

[Austin] Whoo!

I really enjoy singing and, you know,

I sing when I'm climbing,
I sing when I'm walking.

I really enjoy the sounds it makes.

-[vocalizing] Beep.
-Dude.

-This is absolutely insane.
-Man. Whoo!

Kendall and Austin,

facing down the Mount Everest
of obstacle courses, the Bedroom.

-All right.
-You wanna go that way?

-You wanna go this way?
-Yeah. Okay.

All right, dude. So you wanna...

-Yup.
-Come on.

Kendall, already summiting the table.

It's pretty stable.

Austin, heading to the wall.

You goin' that way?

Nice. Nice.

Go for it. Get there.

Whoo!

Austin makes it!

[vocalizing]

And he celebrates by singing.

He rappelled across the 20-foot wall
with no difficulty at all.

It's almost as if he's rappelled before.

-Weird.
-Whoo!

-[Austin] Can you make it?
-I think I can.

[Austin] You got this, dude.

All right. I'm jumpin'.

Kendall, leaping onto to the bed
like he was hopping over a crevasse...

then striking a pose.

[Austin] Hey, baby.

Hey, how you doin'?

-[Austin] You're lookin' good.
-All right. Cool.

-Now we're spinnin'.
-All right.

I'm takin' this rope.

You taking that rope?

-You want the rope?
-I'll stay here, see what happens.

Nothing's more important to a climber
than a reliable rope,

but this rope is reliably awful.

Here we go.

Whoo!

A lava-lanche.

The whole course is now coated
with slippery magma.

Oopsy-daisy.

[Kendall] Well, that happened.

Um...

[vocalizing] ♪ Makin' my way... ♪

Austin, once again giving the world

the gift of his song. What a gift.

[Austin] Get on the edge
of this corner here.

Right here?

[chuckles]

[Austin] You'll have to make
your way over here.

[Austin] All right. Go, dude.

And Kendall's onto the ottoman,

a much safer base camp
than the spinning bed.

Nice.

Can you come over here?

Push that mirror.

Kendall, helping Austin across
with a manly mountain man grip.

-[Austin] We gotta bring this down.
-This is a real hop.

I think we gotta go back that way, dude.

Do we gotta go back that way?

They do have to go back that way!

The chandelier will lower,
but only if the climbers figure out how.

Wait, wait.
Time it where you can bam, bam.

-I'll stop, then jump.
-Okay.

Take my time.

Kendall, going back to the bed.

Man. I love going back to bed.

♪ Hey, Kendall, get this bed ♪

[Austin chuckles]

-All right, Austin.
-Whoo!

I'm gonna stand here.

You got this, dude.

Getting out of this bed isn't easy.

Janine from the Basketballers
missed her shot.

[Alyssa] No! No!

Can Kendall do better?

Come on, Kendall!

Come on, dude!

Come on.

Come on.

Yeah! Whoo!

He's done it!

Kendall almost fell off the side table,

but he jumped straight onto the chest.

[Austin] Come on, baby.

-[Kendall] All right.
-Get to this rock.

You gotta work your way
across the fireplace.

[Kendall] All right.

Whoo!

Dude!

Come on, dude!

Big rock. Fireplace.

[Kendall] All right.

It's a four-foot jump onto that boulder,

but there are no safety ropes here.

He'll have to free solo, over lava!

The wall?

No, no, jump onto that rock.

Use the wall to catch yourself.

[Kendall grunts]

[Austin] Yeah!

Nice, dude. Come on.

It's a tricky traverse
across the fireplace.

Dude, it's just like a V4.
Come on, bro.

A V4 is a climbing degree of difficulty,

not usually associated
with household furniture.

[Austin] Get that rope.

Yeah!

Whoo!

Down goes the chandelier.

With the chandelier down,

Austin can swing directly
towards the exit,

avoiding a number of very tricky jumps.

[Kendall] Go for it.

Austin, hopping right on...

and right off.

No stranger to technical
Tyrolean traverses.

[Austin] Come on, dude.

Nice.

The Climbers, giving a clinic
on how to cross over slippery furniture.

-[Austin] Come here, baby.
-All right.

Austin, reaching for the painting.

Dude!

No!

No! I was going to hang that
in my house after the show.

Argh!

That painting could have been used
as a bridge.

[Austin] No!

Now, Austin will have to
jump to the trunk.

Go for it. Get there.

I'm gonna make it.

Yeah!

Oh! Austin made a double jump

and he didn't even need
to use the top step. Wow.

And with that amazing combo move,

the Climbers have become
the king of the mountain

and knocked the Basketballers
out of the competition.

[Austin] Come on, dude.

But there's another team to play

so the Climbers need
to get Kendall across, too.

Facing a six-foot jump
from the chaise lounge...

Come on.

Wow! Kendall gets blasted
right in the boulders.

Dude!

Then, slick with lava,
he almost skidded off the trunk,

but he used his shin to check
his forward momentum. Unreal.

Come on.

Come on.

[both cheering]

And Kendall's across!

Wow! The fastest run
in Floor is Lava history.

Dude!

Yeah, yeah!

Whoo! Whoo!

And also, thanks to Austin,
the most musical.

[Austin vocalizing]

♪ Makin' my way
Kendall, get this bed ♪

♪ Yeah! ♪

This experience has definetly
brought us closer.

It's definetely heated up
our relationship.

-Ooh.
-[Austin] Ooh.

-Lava joke.
-Lava joke.

I lava you.

I lava you, too, baby.

I just got that much closer
to this dude right here.

With a perfect score of two points,

the Climbers are at the pinnacle
of possible scoring,

but the final team can still beat them

if they get two points and a faster time.

Our final team is no stranger
to pressure-filled, ultra-hot rooms,

because they're firefighters.

Say hello to Zeki and Zach,
the Extinguishers.

We've known each other
for about eight years now.

Um, met Zeki when I first was doing
my paramedic internship

with the Sacramento City Fire Department.

I was fortunate to be hired
by that department

and we are now partners on Engine 17.

We're with each other
for 48 hours at a time,

going on calls, cooking together,
working out together,

so we have to be able
to communicate with each other

to be able to look out for one another
in a hazardous situation, like a fire.

We're used to being around heat.
It's usually fire, not lava.

So this will be a little different,
but I think we'll be all right.

We're risking a lot.

If we can't complete this,
the guys at the firehouse

will give us a hard time.

We'll never live this down.

[Zeki] This'll stick with us
for the rest of our career,

so we gotta make sure we represent
and do the best we can.

Let's do this. We got this.
Station 17 in the house.

-Let's do it.
-We're taking it home.

[Zeki] Oh, dude.

[Zach] Oh, my God. What is this?

We join the two-alarmed firemen
as they face a new occupational hazard.

Lava!

Oh!

Oh, look at the bed spinning, too.

-Oh, no!
-All right.

[Zach] Oh!

How we gonna do this? All right.

-I'll check how sturdy these are.
-Check that out.

Maybe I can cross the wall to that side.

Go ahead. Go.

Whoo!

Zach, heading to the curtain wall.

Remember, both firemen
have to get to the finish line

in under 6:05 in order to win.

-Try to swing to the other one?
-Yup, yup, yup.

-You got it.
-All right. Let's see.

-Hey! [clapping]
-Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Go, Zach! Good job.

What a great start!

Zach's form is just as good
as the Climbers.

Turns out, firemen know
how to rappel, too.

All right. No lava! No lava!

-[Zach] Hold on.
-No lava!

What's this?

Oh, dude!

Yes, lava!

-That was not good.
-[Zach] Oh!

Hey, I'm just gonna belly-flop.

I'mma belly flop on it.

Be careful.

-All right. Here we go.
-Easy, easy, easy.

-[Zach] All right!
-I survived more than five seconds! Yes!

Keep it going.

That's a win. That's a win.

-All right.
-All right.

No lava. All bed, no lava.

Right on the edge.

-No lava!
-Sure you want to go straight to the bed?

Whoo!

Here we go.

-Let me know when you good.

No, not yet. Not yet.

Zeki's entered 1,000 burning buildings,

but this bed has got him flummoxed.

Not yet.

-Not yet.
-Time it, time it.

I'mma time it.

Okay, here we go.

Here we go. It's bed time!

Go! Yeah, there we go!

Yes! Yes!

Zeki is a man
who takes his naps seriously

as he heads to the bed with enthusiasm.

Night-night.

Flying through the air like a DC-10
air tanker dropping a heavy load.

Boom!

-[Zach] All right!
-Here we go.

All right, now I'm getting dizzy.

Zeki, spinning round and round on that bed
like he was sliding down the firepole.

Getting motion sickness!

Oh, that's not good.

-You go first, then...
-Here we go.

One! Two! Three!

Zeki's made it onto the ottoman!

Come on.

Zach, making good time over the furniture.

All right.

Hold on.

I'mma jump onto that.

Scoot over and when I jump,
don't let me fall in.

[Zeki] I got you. Station 17, here we go!

Hold it down.

Zach city fire.

You can't fall.

[screams]

-[Zach laughs]
-We here!

He's made it!

Zach, using Zeki as a backstop!
What teamwork!

All right, that's where we're goin'.

There?

Whatever you do,
don't spill the cup of juice.

-I'm saving that for later.
-[laughs]

Zeki, very concerned
about staying hydrated.

Also, that's not real juice.

[Zach] Can you reach?

I'm trying to think of the easiest route.

If that's stable, grab it.
See if that thing moves.

-I'll see if this moves?
-This thing on top.

[groans] We got a path! We got a path!

But where you gonna go from there?

They wasted no time on that vanity.

They're moving faster
than the Climbers did.

[Zach] It looks like
we might have to go around.

-[Zeki] We gotta go back there.
-[Zach] How though?

[Zeki] On the table, on that chair...

-But how do we get across...
-...on that rock.

We gotta go that way.

Hey, you gotta time it.

You got a bigger area on the side.

-The other side.
-You just gotta belly flop.

Yeah. I'mma go first.

-[Zach grunts]
-[Zeki laughs]

Hey, jump on it. Jump on it!

All right.

All right.

Hey, grab a corner.

Grab a far corner.

-I'm comin'.
-Go on.

-All right, you ready?
-Yup.

Go for it.

You on! You on.

All right, we on.

Two firemen on a bed.

There's no safer bed in America,
except for the spinning...

and the lava.

[Zeki] So that's where I'm goin'.
I'm goin' on the table.

[Zach] Yeah, go to the table

and try to go from the table
to the chest and the chair.

-[Zeki] All right.
-Oh, that's hard.

-Oh!
-No!

Lava!

All right. I'm so dizzy.

I'm gettin' dizzy.

The longer you wait,
I'm getting more dizzy.

[Zach] I will. Hold on.

The firemen need to move.

Time is ticking away.

You gonna try it?

Get low. Hey, get low.

Let's do it. There you go!

Attaboy! Attaboy! Yeah!

Wow! Zach lands safely on the table,

but his face finds a world of lava.

Somebody get that firefighter a hose.

-All right, scoot over.
-Hold up! Hold up.

-No.
-No, let me go first.

-I'm goin' for that.
-Okay, okay.

Zach, going directly
for the chaise lounge from the table.

[Zach]
All right, you got this. You got this!

Alyssa missed
the chaise lounge from the trunk,

and that's a foot closer!

Belly flop!

Hard!

[grunts]

Yeah!

Zach made it!

Zach, taking to the air
like a LifeFlight helicopter.

Go, Zach, go.

-[Zeki] Thank God!
-Yeah!

Station 17!

Get onto that.

Yeah.

Zeki, onto the table,
flopping down with a wet thud...

All right.

...like a giant ladle of firehouse chili.

Zach, four feet away from the round table.

From there, it's only two jumps
to the exit, but they need to hurry.

There's under a minute left
to get both men across.

You got this. You got this.

Just grab onto it.

[beeping]

No! Zach!

Oh, no! Zach jumps too hard
and slides face-first into the lava.

I've heard about using your head,
but that's the wrong way to do it.

But there's no question Zach's fellow
firefighters back at Station 17

will want to see this again

and again

and again.

and I'm sure they won't tease him
about it. No way.

And with that, the firemen's hopes
have been extinguished,

and the Climbers will remain
on the summit of the scoreboard,

and have won $10,000
and the Volcano of Victory.

Congratulations!

[both screaming]

Yeah! Hell, yeah!

$10,000.

-Oh, my gosh.
-I get the $10,000, you get a trophy.

-It's true. We've agreed on this.
-Yeah. Cool.

Just kidding. We didn't.

-You didn't. I was gonna say...
-That is not the case.
