[laughter]

Come on, Abuelita! Tell me which
story you're telling at the story slam!

Told you, mi amor, it's a surprise!

Yeah, but I don't like surprises
to be surprising. Give me a hint!

-[Karma and Winston] Please!
-[chuckle] OK, OK.

The story will be about
the very best day I had as a nurse.

Oh, that's easy.

The day you cured the guy
from non-stop burping.

-Nope.
-Non-stop slurping.

-Nope.
-Non-stop… chirping?

No! Good at being a grandson,
bad at guessing.

[gasp] Is it the one about the guy
who got stuck in a toilet?!

-Ew!
-How did you get him out?

-He's still stuck.
-[giggles]

And no, that is not the story.

The story I tell will be
a special surprise.

Aw! [chuckles]

Ooh, bump ahead! Hmm…

-Need a hand, Doña Maria?
-Oop, I'm OK.

Just need to send this puppy
into overdrive!

[grunts, laughs]

-[mic feedback]
-[clears throat]

Hello, Storytellers!
Welcome to story slam rehearsal.

We're excited to hear your stories
next weekend!

[cheering]

Let's get our first team
up here to practice,

Winston and his grandmother,
Doña Maria!

-[cheers, applause]
-We're first! Come on!

Huh.

Huh.

Disculpe, how do I get on stage?

Huh? Oh! Oh, no, oh no, oh no.

Uh… I'm so sorry. We only have stairs.

I can't go up stairs.
I use a wheelchair.

I know. And my apologies
that we're not prepared.

This has never come up before.

Oh, no biggie! We'll just lift you up
and put you on the stage.

Mi amor, I am not a bag of laundry.

[nervous chuckle]
We won't be lifting anyone, folks!

Um, maybe you could tell your story

[low chatter from audience]

[clears throat]
Hola, my name is Maria Torres!

-I was a nurse for almost 40 years.
-[audience chatter]

-What?
-[shouts] "Forty years!"

-I was working at the hospital one night--
-[crowd chatter drowns her out]

-Here, let me try something.
-[mic crackles]

-Oh, whoa-whoa-whoa!
-[crash, crowd groans]

-Sorry, Doña Maria.
-Urgh!

[sighs]

Doña Maria, this isn't right.

I was really looking forward
to sharing my story with the kids,

especially Winston.

[Winston angrily grumbles]

Mi amor I know this is upsetting,
but for now let's just go home.

If you can't tell a story,
then no one should be able to!

They should cancel the whole story slam!

Why should they get to tell their stories

Cos I designed a ramp that Doña Maria
can use to get up on stage!

-It's inspired by Major.
-[barks]

I even figured out how to make it
smell like a dog!

[sniffing] Ah!

we're gonna help my abuelita.

Dinner's ready! What are y'all up to?

We're getting ready for our protest!

Hmm. Well, you know, you two come from
a long line of protesters.

-[Karma] Ah, yeah!
-[Winston] Your grandparents? Awesome!

to be treated equally.

So it's wonderful that you kids
are protesting for Doña Maria.

How's she doing?

Oh, well… [chuckles nervously]

You know I was so angry before,
I didn't even check on her.

But I'm sure once we fix everything,
she'll be happy.

Especially with her new ramp.

-[taps]
-[barks]

-[laughs]

but I need a different kind of ramp.

Nah, you won't need a ramp at all,

cos we're gonna get the story slam
canceled for being unfair!

Just because I can't participate,

doesn't mean that the whole neighborhood
should miss out on story slam.

-What I want is to--
-No! They've gotta cancel it!

[Major whines]

[sighs]

Hmm… maybe if we adjust the angle

and change the slobber lever
to a handrail?

Doña Maria said she didn't want

and she gave me all these great ideas!

-[Major sound uncertain]

[sighs]

We've been so focused on our own anger,

we haven't asked Doña Maria
what she wants.

But that's the only way
we're gonna be able to help her!

We have the power to help change things,

but only Doña Maria knows
what kind of change we really need.

When everything happened
at the story slam rehearsal,

I was so mad I couldn't even think
to ask how you're feeling.

So, how can we help?

[happy sigh] I appreciate you two
being so passionate. I do.

I've always been good
at fighting for what's right.

[chuckle] I guess that's what nurses do.

So I don't want to live in a world
where the story slam gets canceled

because of me and my wheelchair.

I want to live in a world

where we find a way
for everyone to tell their stories.

Well, Abuelita,
maybe we could help you with that.

-Yay! Ha-ha!
-[giggles]

[sighs] I am going to tell you the story
of the very best day I had as a nurse!

I was working in the hospital
when I heard a voice,

a voice I recognized.

It was my daughter's.

"What is she doing here?"

"She's not supposed to give birth
for two more weeks!"

And that's when I met
my baby grandson

for the first time.

When I picked him up,

I remember I said,
"This is a special boy."

And he's been proving me right ever since.

[cheers, applause]
