So, what's the weirdest thing
you've ever eaten?

I traveled around Spain one time,
and I was eating different organs,

and I think some brains at some point,
and then tongue.

Oh my gosh.

When I was in Uganda,
there was the street markets.

There, you'd go and you have grasshoppers.
Like deep-fried grasshoppers.

And they're so good.
They're sweet and savory at the same time.

Do they sell them in a bag?
Like potato chips?

They scoop them
and they put them in your little plate.

They're super high in protein.

I can't be eating Jiminy Cricket, honey.

I've had grasshopper salt,
but I've never tried that.

Speaking of food,
let's talk about the Chan family.

Yeah.

[Emily] We're both chefs,
and we own two restaurants in Atlanta.

Jen Chan's, which is named after my wife,

and Mik Chan's,
which is named after our four-year-old.

My car's really fast.

My parents owned a Chinese restaurant.
So I was around food all the time.

And I learned how to do math
by doing customers' receipts.

Both my parents owned restaurants,
and some of the best memories I have

are of my mom and dad
cooking in the kitchen.

My mom passed away 12 years ago,

and my sisters and I still have
every single one of her recipes.

So, cooking is our life.

It is everything to us.

And our kitchen right now,
it stresses us out.

-Yeah, our kitchen's a hot mess.
-[both laugh]

The house was built in 1993.
The floor plan was cramped and it's tight.

We've actually tried to hack
storage for our appliances,

but it just doesn't work.

Way over here is our refrigerator.
Basically in our living room.

[Jen] We love to entertain,

but we just don't have
any space for our friends and family.

[Emily] And we don't have any storage,

so all of our restaurant kitchen supplies
has taken over the other rooms.

The kitchen is supposed to be
the heart of the home, and ours is not.

It has no pulse, it has no heartbeat.

Just not working.

We can work for food, right, guys?

-I want cooking lessons.
-I'll eat the food.

[laughs]

Sort of?

That is our front door,
our sunroom, our main entrance.

We sort of had to commandeer it
for storage space a couple of years ago.

It's a big house
with some strange spatial issues.

Okay. Sounds like we're in for a surprise.

-Yeah.

-Would you come through our side door?
-[Brooks] Yes! Yeah.

-[Mikel] Let's do it.
-[Emily] Let's do it.

-Yo! So, you enter into the kitchen.

-[Jen] Yep.
-[Emily] Welcome to our home... Kitchen.

[Jessica] Wow.

This doesn't look like the chef's kitchen
I thought it was gonna be.

-Yeah. Yup.
-[Jen] Yeah.

So, two of you have to make do in here?

It's hard for both of us
to cook at the same time.

So if just one at a time can work in here,
do you do most of the cooking?

Um, well, honestly, we will either do
most of the prep at our restaurant,

and then bring it home,

or we'll order takeout
from the restaurant.

Ma'am! You order takeout from
your own restaurant and bring it back?

It's just easier. There's no real space
here to prepare food.

The side that y'all are on is not really
functional for prepping or anything.

[Mikel]
Is this a bookshelf top? What is this?

[Emily] It is more like something
you would find with furniture.

This doesn't even work as a prep space.

We were showing Mik
how to make pizza dough.

And we were rolling it out,

and we realized that there were
wood stain paint chips in our pizza dough.

[Ati] So, you have countertops
that are not food-safe

because somebody stained
and shellacked them.

Yeah. And after a couple of years,
it just started coming off.

-Okay. I see.
-Yep.

[funky music playing]

[Brooks] There's an odd flow from
the kitchen to the dining room to here.

But I love the openness.

[Jen] Yes, it's very open,
but it's segmented at the same time.

It's not a functional entertaining space.

We would love to have our friends over.
I've never had my family and friends here.

What did you fall in love with
about the house? What drew you?

Emily bought the house before we met.

But the story goes,

all she wanted was a house
with a rosebush around a mailbox.

And there was a rosebush
around this mailbox,

and that's why she bought it.

[Emily] When we moved in,
none of these cabinets were here.

So my wife and I installed these.

-Ma'am? Ma'am?
-[Emily laughs]

What do we have here?

Please explain.

Silverware.

Nobody can even get up here.

I can on my tippy-toes.

-You need a stepladder to get up here.
-And you don't have other drawers in here?

Not a drawer.

So, they got one of those cabinets
that's meant to sit on a countertop.

-And they mounted it.
-And so they mounted it on the wall.

And now no one can actually
access that drawer.

[laughs]

We have stuff above our refrigerator.
We have appliances in our laundry room.

There is no pantry, no storage space.

Hey, hey, hey, hey now.

[Mikel] What is this?

-[Emily] This is...
-[Mikel gasps]

[Jessica and Ati]
A microwave!

This is interesting.

We got the microwave down low.
We got the drawers up high.

-It's cute.
-[Ati] Yeah. It's cute.

You have some serious problems
with the layout.

[Emily] It makes no sense.

I mean, like, for instance,
this is our oven,

and it's really lovely because...

-Girl! No, ma'am!
-No. No.

[Emily] This used to be the refrigerator.

So, it would come out to here.
So we... Excuse me.

We had to, like... It's kinda...

Get around the refrigerator.
And out of frustration one day,

I grabbed the Sawzall
and we put the refrigerator in the pantry.

[Ati] So, the refrigerator's there.
What's behind here?

-It's the laundry.
-[Emily] It's the laundry room.

[Ati] That's an interesting setup.

[Jessica] Yeah, it's like
an architectural center island.

Yes. We call that "the donut."

[Brooks] So I'm seeing
these amazing, huge windows.

-And on the other side of the windows is...?
-That's our sunroom.

That's the infamous sunroom. Let's go in.

-And here we go.
-Whoa.

[funky music playing]

[Brooks] Oh, there's stuff everywhere.

-And this is the front door?
-[Jen] It is.

Oh my God. Yeah. Oh! I see.

What happened?
Like, why is this a storage room?

Our restaurants are growing and growing.
It's grown into two restaurants,

and we don't have anywhere
to store this stuff.

If it wasn't storage,
what would you want this room to be?

I want it to turn back into a sunroom.
Emily and I fell in love in this room.

Our entire first year and a half,
two years, probably,

we just hung out in this room
and enjoyed each other.

We'd listen to music, have a beer or wine.
And one night I had one too many drinks,

and that's the first time
she ever saw me dance.

-Was in this room?
-In this room.

Now it's just full of stuff
and no romance.

Yeah, sadly.

[Brooks] This space needs to go back
to something romantic.

Yes, absolutely.

[laughing]
Well, we got our work cut out for us.

[upbeat music playing]

It's ironic that Jen and Emily

cook and serve meals
all day to people in their restaurants,

-but they can't do it in their own house.
-Plus, they barely have any room to eat.

They don't have a space
that's adequate to entertain.

We have got to fix this.

What if we make, like, one big great room?

So that the family can eat,
they can cook, and they can entertain,

kind of like all in one space.

-What do you guys think about that?
-[Brooks] Yes.

[Ati] Yeah, I love that idea.
So, let me talk you through this.

We've got the kitchen over here.
This is where the living room is.

-[Brooks] Right.
-[Ati] And this is where that pantry,

the refrigerator, washer-dryer,
air conditioning situation is.

So, what if we do this?

We can demo the section here,

and the wall that separates
the living room from the kitchen.

We can then relocate the appliances,

install new marble countertops,
and create all kinds of storage.

It'll feel so much bigger

because you're extending the kitchen
all the way out towards the living room.

Totally increasing the flow
between all the spaces.

[Ati] Exactly.

For storage, I really wanna do
something cool and unconventional.

I was thinking maybe something
could come down out of the ceiling,

or be suspended from the ceiling.

But this idea of floatingness...

'Cause that keeps
everything light and airy.

Or even something invisible
like glass, or clear.

-I love this already.
-[Jessica] Yeah.

If we give them back this extra storage,
that frees up the sunroom.

When Emily and Jen first met,

they actually fell in love
in that sunroom.

So, I think it would be really great
to give them back that sunroom.

Oh! Give them back their love story.

Yeah, exactly.

And they can use
their front door once again.

So, what do you guys think
about the design in the space?

I don't think we should clutter

the countertops with toasters and blenders

because it'll really
take away from the look.

Maybe there's a way you can, um...
like, make them disappear. Hide them.

I want to try something out.
What if we kind of went with a faux wall

that could hide
all of the small appliances?

So, let's imagine that the faux wall
comes down from the upper cabinets.

And that covers up the appliances
that are tucked away.

When the Chans want to cook,

they can just push a button,
the wall goes back up,

and then the Chans can grab
everything that they need.

I love that, but we want to make sure
they have a ton of prep space as well.

I think we'll have to play with it
because I feel like something's...

There's a brainchild in there.

-We just got to, like, get to it.
-[Jessica] Yeah, I agree. Yeah.

Another hack that we need to figure out

is how to give Emily and Jen
an actual dining table that seats,

I don't know, like, eight to ten people.

[Brooks] Yeah, this is where
they want to do their entertaining.

They're gonna have Jen, Emily,
their son, the four of us,

and then they can invite one other guest.

-That's a lot.
-Then you're not invited.

-[all laugh]
-[Brooks] So, I was thinking,

what if the table could sink down
and go flush with the ground?

So it's totally invisible.

That could leave the whole great room open
for dancing and whatever.

And then when you need it,
it comes up out of the floor.

And then you have
a giant dining room table.

Brooks, honey.
Nobody's going to want to eat on a table

where people have just danced
and walked on.

You can put down a rug to cover it up,
and then when you want the table,

you just roll the rug up and then...
Out comes the table from the floor.

Or you could take this whole idea,
and roll it up in your rug,

and put it in the trash,
because this does not work.

They need some kind of table all the time,

and then they also need
a table for entertaining, right?

So, what if we have a huge central island?

And that could be their usual table.

Okay.

[Jessica] But inside of the island
is an extendable table.

Only when you needed it, right?

So basically,
imagine that there are rails like this.

Maybe you have leaves
that come on top of it.

And then that leaf could unfold,
or its multiple layers telescope out.

Now, that I like.

Anything is better than people's feet
walking across the dinner table.

[laughs]

Jen and Emily's kitchen is in bad shape.

So, the first order of business
is to tear it all down, strip it bare,

so we can change it into greatness.

Thank God we found a crawl space
underneath the house.

Now all that stuff in the sunroom
can be stored safely down there.

The walls are prepped.
We're ready to hit them.

[grunts]

Hello. What's this stuff?

I'm working on coming up with a way
to give Jen and Emily the kitchen island

that doubles as this extendable table.

Oh, sweet.

[Jessica] These were just
initial ideas that I had

about possible extendable tables,

but I don't really like
how they would fit into this island.

So, I'm working on something
that will work for us.

-Okay.
-The first rule of invention is,

don't reinvent the wheel.

So, I managed to source a table,

and then we can build
a custom kitchen island to hide the table.

Pull it out when you want
to use it to entertain.

It comes out, chef's table.

When you're done, you push it back in,

and it totally retracts
within the center island.

-That's amazing.
-[Jessica] I think it's gonna be cool.

This is super cool

because the island is now,
like, multiple things, right?

It has the sink, the counter for stools,
and now it has a table.

Exactly.

They're gonna think
it's some kind of witchcraft or magic.

It's so cool.

[upbeat pop music playing]

Wow, look at you and your sharp things.

-Hey, how are you?
-I'm good. What's going on?

-Oh! I'm having a little moment here.
-Oh no.

I'm trying to figure out a way
to hide these appliances into countertops.

What happened to your faux wall idea?

[Mikel] The problem is, I would only have
about 12 inches of space in front.

And so that's really not enough prep space
to prep anything other than an onion.

-Right.
-So, what do you think

about hiding the smaller appliances up
underneath the countertops?

Because I want to be able
to push a little button,

and then somehow, by the grace of God,
or the grace of Jessica,

my toaster would just
come right up out of the countertop.

I can make my avocado toast.
I can grab what I need.

I love it.

We can use a lift mechanism.

We can actually have a bunch of appliances
rise up and down whenever they're needed.

This is not my area of expertise.

So I'm like, how do I really
make this happen in real life?

Are you asking me for help?

Uh, a little, yeah.

-Okay.
-This is just not what I do.

Do you think the weight of the marble
and appliance will be okay for the lift?

Yeah, I totally do. We'll just spec
all the actuators correctly.

-The what?
-The actuators.

Okay, I don't even know
what actuators are,

but as long as you can make
the marble work, I'm a happy camper.

To hack more storage
in the Chans' kitchen.

Since we have the upper cabinets
and shelves on the walls,

I was thinking of floating shelves
in front of the windows.

I love this idea.

Here, I mocked this up.

If I was the wall, this could go back up
against the wall, right?

So, I think two shelves for each window,

and I'm thinking glass
because it will let in the natural light.

We could do brass supports,

and I love the idea of putting glasses
and cups and stuff on the shelves.

It's giving me, like,
French bistro, Parisian café.

But wait, hold on.
This is the other idea I was thinking of.

What if...

we put herbs on the glass shelves?

There's two chefs,
so they could grow herbs in the kitchen,

-and they could pluck them and cook them.
-[Ati laughs]

Do you cook with ferns very often?

-[both laugh]
-No.

-You want to taste? You want some herbs?
-No. No, thank you.

How great is it
to go through the front door?

I know, right? Let me talk you through
what we've done so far, okay? So...

On this wall over here,

we're going to have the fridge
and the range with the ventilation hood.

We'll have storage and marble countertops
all throughout the kitchen.

And then on this side,
the pantry will be over there.

The counter lift system will be over here,

and here, we'll have our island
and a sink.

And of course,
the extendable dining table.

-I really like your headpiece.
-Are you gonna match my look?

Maybe I can get mine to be like yours.

Okay. So, now that these cabinets
are installed,

as well as the plumbing and the electrical
for the kitchen island,

I'd love to do a dry fit
of the expandable table we sourced,

just to make sure it fits.

So when this table extends,
rails come out,

and then we put leaves on it.

But I would love to store the leaves
right above the table.

Then we can pull out
the rails of the table,

grab each of the leaves, one at a time,

and place them on the rails,
and it will be super seamless.

-[Paddy] I think we can make that happen.

And I know we can't have the family
waiting that long.

[Ati] Um, so, since we have
the mechanism for a half pantry slide-out,

can we use this at least
for the bottom part of this cabinet?

-Yes. We can still use this piece.

Okay. But there's still the challenge
of the upper part of this.

Correct, yeah.

Is there a way that we could utilize
not just the shelf space?

Because this is really deep.

But the wall space.

That way, we're maximizing
the use of the cabinet.

How about we do a pull-out drawer system
that has a sidewall to it?

-[Ati] Okay.
-[Paddy] Some shelves on it.

And then this whole thing pulls out,
mimics the pull-out of this bottom part.

-[Ati] Okay.
-That can utilize that space above it.

Okay. I like that idea.

So, are we gonna build that?

-Oh, I'm totally going to build that.

It was just a wonky floorplan.

It's open. The place looks so much bigger
than it did before. Brighter.

And the flow is seamless.

So, we wanted to maximize

all the storage space
in the whole kitchen,

by putting these shelves
in front of the windows.

Love it.

Plus, we put an herb garden in the windows
so they can grow in the sunlight.

So, while you're cooking,
you can just grab an herb and pick it.

I ate a piece of basil. I have to confess.

-It's incredible. It's incredible.

The floating shelves are such a cool hack.

The fact that they're glass,
they let the light in,

but also we can reach all of our stuff.

So, you have a brand-new fridge,
and it's not in the pantry anymore.

Yeah, now it's in the kitchen.

And then you have a new chef stove.

No more opening the oven door
and bumping into the side door.

-Yes.
-That's right.

[Ati] And you have a new microwave.

[Jen and Emily laugh]

So, you may be wondering now,
where are all of your small appliances?

They're not in the laundry room anymore.

That they're not.
But let me show you where they are.

So, now with just the touch of a button...

[Mikel] Get a load of this.

We have hacked it all!

I want to touch it.
I want to play with it.

You got a place
for all of your small appliances.

that little button right there,

you can plug in all of the appliances
including your smartphone.

This is like Inspector Gadget-style stuff.

Oh, I'm totally with you.

[Emily] Oh my gosh, it's so cool.

That lift is the coolest thing ever.

It is like something you'd see in a movie,
and it's in our kitchen.

[giggles]

We know that you love to entertain
and have dinner parties,

but you didn't have enough space,
so we decided to install a dining table.

-How?
-[Brooks] You want to see it?

-Yes, yes!
-[Jessica] Come on! Let's show 'em!

[laughs]

-How big does it go?
-Is that big enough? Is that big enough?

Oh my gosh.

[Mikel] Because what you had before
was a card table.

[all laugh]

This is a dining table.

Oh my gosh.

I think before,
you could have one extra guest.

Now, this seats eight people.

All the leaves store
in the hidden compartment under there,

so they're super convenient to access.

Oh my gosh. That is amazing.

But where will you sit? You're asking.

I don't know, honey,
but you need eight chairs.

[Jessica] Yeah. Yeah. Hmm.

That's them in there.

[all laugh]

This!

-[Jen] I thought that was storage.
-[Emily] Oh my...

Each of the ottomans houses four stools.

That is the coolest thing ever.

The telescoping table is witchcraft magic.

We can just pull that bad boy out,
pull up the chairs,

and have everyone over, and entertain.
It's what we always wanted.

This is beyond my dreams.
I had no idea this could happen.

I wish I could call my mom.

Which I can't. But, like, for her to see
an adult, real, amazing home.

She would go crazy.

What would you tell your mom
if you could call her now?

I think she would be proud
of how far we have come together.

Loving each other and loving our friends
and our family as a family.

We finally have a place to do that,
so it's very nice.

I'm excited about having my sisters
and Jen's family over for the first time.

It'll be really lovely.

When we opened our restaurants,

we wanted to be able
to share our love of cooking,

our love of food, with a community.

[Emily] And now we have a home

where we can share our love of cooking
with our family and our friends.

[Jen] I don't know
who we're gonna invite first.

-Everybody.
-[both laugh]

-[Brooks] Hey, dude.

-[Jen] Yes, they do.
