and our son Benjamin is five.

Minnah's the musician in our family,

and she loves to be creative,
but her room's just not very private.

I don't like giving my sister privacy.

We're also having
major growing pains with our kitchen.

[Zany] The house was built in 1910,
and I'm pretty sure people then

did not need a lot of storage
or counter space to cook with.

We do not have a pantry.

And then up here
is where I keep all my big pots.

I'm half-Japanese,
Zany's half-Vietnamese and half-Pakistani.

We like to cook everything
from all ethnic cultures.

Unfortunately, we don't have the space
to prep for that kind of cooking.

We love our neighborhood, we have
no intentions of leaving our house.

But Minnah's clearly outgrown her room,

and we are running out of space
in that kitchen.

[Andrew] The house was built in 1910.

We have 1,900 square feet and 32 windows.

-That's a lot for four people!

They didn't make use of the square footage
the way they should have.

It's super choppy.

There's, like, walls in weird spaces.

Minnah, she has no privacy.

And the kitchen is really old.

I don't think
it's been updated since 1910,

and it's really small for both of us
to be in there and to cook.

So it would be a big house
if the layout was different.

I play these two guitars.

Um, I've always been into music.
I've been singing since I could talk.

So my parents got me into lessons,

and then it just became
like an everyday part of my life.

Um, it's in the dining room
with my ukulele.

There's no space.

and then it finds a place.

and it's just kind of become
like a weird cage to hold everything,

instead of an actual closet...

I think Brooks and him

to barricade this door back up.

[Zany] This kitchen is a hot, hot mess.

Okay. What we try to do is to try to see

So that we can hack the space properly.

to make a roast in the oven.

So I would have to open the oven
because you have to preheat it.

this is storage?

the roast is in the fridge.

is where I keep my onions.

[Zany] It is. We don't have
a pantry cabinet space.

So, I'm doing the best I can
with the space that I have.

Basically, we have no storage.
We have these few cabinets.

And these wire racks.

And then where is the elevator button
to get up to all appliances up there?

-So, it's this tiny little stool.
-[laughs]

Ma'am! You have
to stand on the countertops?

You cannot live like this!

[Zany] It works.

-How are you gonna get back down?
-Please.

There's something wrong with your bed.
There's no bed frame.

I used to have a bed frame,
and then I got rid of it.

And now I have these pallets.

So, were you trying to hack your bed?

Like, what were you going for
with the situation with the pallets?

A more Bohemian thing, but I also wanted
my bed lower to the ground.

[Ati] Okay.

-Is that working for you, then?
-Um, not really.

I would like to have a really high bed
where I can put stuff.

And you don't have anywhere to hang out
where you want to play music.

I think we can hack your room

to try and get you a space that works well
for you to be able to work,

and to play, and to have some privacy.

[Zany] Right, but that's the way it came.

So, what are your must-haves
for the kitchen?

Counter space. Storage.
So everything is not so out in the open.

And for me to be able
to see Clutch run out the front door.

All right, so, Andy,
what about your aesthetic?

I'm a big fan of Japanese architecture.
So, simple lines.

Maybe a little red or black lacquer.
Rice paper paneling.

So, wait a minute,
what's your design style?

Like, French farmhouse provincial.

Like whites, light blues, greens.
A lot of lights.

Those are completely
different design styles.

I know, but it represents us.
Like, it'll mesh.

It works. We'll make it work.

-Honey, we're gonna have to do something.
-I have faith in both of you to do it.

This house is over a hundred years old,

and back then,
people just didn't have as much stuff.

So now, we have to hack storage solutions
to make the kitchen actually functional.

They didn't have rice cookers
and Crockpots back then?

Kinda like me now.

Oh, honey. That's rough living.

I think we can all agree we probably
need to start with the kitchen, right?

Zany and Andrew need a lot of help
with storage and prep space.

Definitely.

Yeah, so, I'm thinking we can
reconfigure the layout, right?

So we can take down the walls
between the kitchen and the dining room

to make it more open.

And then we could cover this old
fireplace to increase the wall space.

We can relocate the fridge,
the dishwasher, and the sink.

Then we can add cabinetry and shelving
throughout the entire kitchen.

I'm all for giving them more storage.

Because right now,
all of the small appliances

are stored on the cabinets.

And Zany has to climb on the countertops
to just get to them. And they're heavy!

What if we hacked
some kind of trapdoor into the floor

that could access
all this hidden storage belowground?

[Ati] The only thing is,

we don't know how much space
we're working with in that crawl space

and, honestly, if we have the structure

to even support
something that would be coming down.

[Jessica]
What if we did some kind of storage

that lowers down from the ceiling,
because they have high ceilings?

So, imagine a box big enough
to hold small appliances,

suspended from the ceiling somehow.

So, got to think
on the actual lift mechanism.

But this whole thing
can rise up and lower.

-Right?
-[Brooks] Yeah, so cool.

Now the ground is clear, this goes up
and you have the whole kitchen back open.

-Exactly.
-[Mikel] I like that idea.

So, what else can we do
so that we can increase prep space?

It's almost like we need something
that could kind of, like, slide out.

-Pull out.
-[Brooks] What do you mean?

Okay, let me just use this as an example.

So, for instance, imagine this is,
like, the countertop, right?

-[Ati] Mm-hmm.
-If we could somehow

have a swing-out,
almost like a peninsula or an island,

that comes from underneath the countertop.

That could potentially work.

It's just how we stabilize it
so it doesn't fall.

[Brooks] That's a great idea. Love that.

So I think we've got
a really good plan for the kitchen,

but we still have to figure out
something for Minnah's room

and make it multifunctional.

[Brooks]
Yeah, she needs a private bedroom,

and she also needs her own retreat
to play music and relax.

So right off the top,
we can just wall off the door,

the one that separates
hers and Clutch's room,

and then make that into a closet

to give her some
additional storage space and privacy.

[Brooks] Oh, that's Clutch's
secret passageway to his sister's room.

He's gonna be so bummed.

She'll be happy.

[Ati] So once we've done that,
then maybe we can try and hack the bed

where it can disappear.

You don't mean like a Murphy bed.

-No, not a Murphy bed, I...
-No, more magical.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to think about it
a little bit more,

but the goal would be to give her
some kind of chill spot during the day,

but then it transforms
into a bedroom when she needs it to.

That would be really cool
if you can pull that off.

I want to give Minnah
some kind of cool way

to store all of her musical instruments
in her room.

Right now, they're sitting on the floor,
and I want to display them like art.

Are you just gonna put them on a hook?

I was thinking some kind of like

folding butterfly interlocking system

that could, like, open like a cabinet.

-Something that you can do,

an inside storage and an outside storage.

That way, she can display the guitars
as art on the outside.

I love that, because
it's multifunctional, right?

It's storage plus display.

The layout of the house is very typical
of a century-old house.

You know, everything's not open concept.

we can open up this whole space,

then we can get started
with all of our hacks.

wracking my brains here,

giving Minnah a bed

that hides away to create
lounge space in her bedroom?

But I don't want to do, like,
a sofa bed or a Murphy bed.

No, no. We're not that basic.

We do have that additional ceiling height.

What if we have the sofa over here,
and then we have the bed?

And have the bed go all the way up,
flush to the ceiling.

-[Brooks] That's a great idea.
-[Ati] Yeah.

There's no bed in the way if she wants
to have her friends over and jam.

-That's perfect.

So I'm gonna see if I can source
some kind of transformable furniture

that goes flush to the ceiling,
but only comes down when Minnah needs it.

We hack a lift system
in the center of the kitchen

that basically goes up flush
into a hollow soffit in the ceiling.

Then, with the press of a button,
the whole thing can lower

so that they can access
all of their small appliances.

Rises up, flush to the ceiling.

This is a really, really smart hack, Jess.

our swing-out dimensions

to be four feet long,

but hidden underneath
the kitchen countertop.

When it's time to prep food,

all Zany has to do
is swing the peninsula out.

And when she's done, the whole thing
can go right back and disappear.

-This is going to be really smart.

And then we're building
two more boxes that go on top of that.

So, I want to build four giant boxes.

Two of them will be mounted on the wall,
and they can display guitars.

And then I want to build two more boxes
right on top of them,

but they'll be doors
that swing open on each side

to reveal a whole wall
of instrument storage.

how are you going to connect them?

I sourced this amazing hinge.
This thing. Look at this.

So, this is going to allow the doors
to go sideways in that cool way.

-Yeah, okay, that's pretty cool.

small appliances for the kitchen,

It's specced to carry 400 pounds.

If they don't distribute weight
of all of their stuff in there, equally,

it will actually auto-adjust,

will continue to raise and lower flat.

So, in order to maximize
the functionality and the flow,

we demoed the wall
between the kitchen and dining room.

Zany, you like a French provincial design.

-And then you like Japanese minimalism.
-Yeah, I like the natural...

So, for the French provincial side,
we wanted to go with bright white paint.

Then we brought in some pops of blue

that you'll see with the plates,
as well as the artwork.

And nothing says French provincial
like these floors.

-[Zany] It's so beautiful.
-[Mikel] Now you, my friend,

we brought in a Scandinavian dining table.

It has clean lines,

reminiscent of what you would see in
