we are a food truck family.

Eleven years ago,
I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

[Erica]
We decided to live a healthier lifestyle.

[Terrence] We became vegan.

[Erica] And then we started
the vegan food truck business.

[Erica] To help with our business,

Terrence's sister Janae and her son,
Jordan, moved in with us.

We are so grateful,
but we are struggling with space.

[Janae] Just letting you know
I'm about to fry some chicken.

My mom and I are living
in the basement right now.

I sleep on the couch,
and she has the bedroom.

Since I still eat meat,

I don't prepare my meals
in the main kitchen.

I prepare them downstairs
in the laundry room, on my hot plate,

so that Terrence and Erica
don't have to smell

the fumes from my fried chicken.

Also, we gave up
our dining room to have an office.

We only have a limited amount of space.
They're struggling down there.

We're struggling upstairs.

-We just don't know what to do.

How did you decide
to even get into a food truck business?

We came up with this idea last year.

After we became vegan,
my health immediately got a lot better.

So we said, "Well, you know what?
Why don't we start selling this food?"

-It just kind of blew up.
-It blew up after that. Yeah.

Okay. And so, when did you guys move in?

We moved in about a year ago.

They needed some additional help.

So, being family, we jumped right in
and said we're on our way.

-Family sticks together, period.
-Oh, amazing.

Honestly, looking around,
there's a lot of room.

You have beautiful vaulted ceilings.

I'm loving this natural light
that's cascading through the space.

So, this space is wonderful,

but we turned our dining room
into an office,

and that just became
the drop-off area of everything.

And the basement downstairs,
their living quarters...

I am really interested in seeing
what this basement looks like.

from California to Georgia,

and then you get
a little lobby space with some pony walls.

He seriously just deserves some privacy.

through the clutter and whatnot.

Walk us through an everyday scenario.

-Okay.
-Sit down and show me how you all do this.

-[Brooks] How do you use this space?

Why is he standing?

[Terrence] We don't have a seat.

We have to pull
our kitchen barstools over here

so I can sit down
and do what I need to do.

You probably feel like
he's micromanaging you

'cause he's hovering over you.

And then I guess at lunchtime,
when you all get hungry,

since you're vegans,
you just get some of this basil

you have over here
that you have stashed aside.

What is it that you really want
out of this space?

I would love to have a desk
that would fit both of us

and all of our supplies,

so he's not hovering and breathing
down my neck while I'm trying to work.

But also, we want it to function
as a dining room.

Now that we have more family here,

we would love to all sit down
and eat as a family.

So, design-wise, what are we thinking?

Is there anything
that we have to have in the room?

Girl, don't you even
look up there at that light.

This was just reminding me of my hair.

-I was having flashbacks as a teenager.
-Right?

[Erica] We don't have to have that.

But I would love a modern feel
with African accents.

So, if we could kind of somehow
fuse together modern, African...

where I keep all of my ingredients.

We have our microwave,
our mini refrigerator.

-All of our midnight snacks.
-A midnight snack.

So, are you going to bed,

and then Mom gets up
and has a midnight snack?

-Every night.

And then when I'm ready to cook,
I just try to grab everything at once,

and then I take it over here
into the kitchen-slash-laundry room.

It's like a fully functional laundry room.

[Jessica] And a nonfunctional kitchen.

This is my little hot plate right here.

And this is my little grill here where,
if I decide I want to grill some meat,

I do it right here.

I always have paper towels
and lids like these to cover everything

just so that lint from the dryer
doesn't fly over and contaminate my food.

What do you do for ventilation down here?

There's not much
that I can do about ventilation.

Most of the aromas waft
right up to the bathroom upstairs.

So having a space to prepare your food
is really important for you, right?

It's very important.

[Jessica] It's a tall order to try
to give a full kitchen down here.

Obviously, you've made this work

the best way that you know how,
which makes total sense.

But you've sacrificed
so much for the family

that we would love to be able to help you.

That would be lovely.

-Yeah.

The Redmonds are such a fun,
loving, amazing family,

but they're really struggling
to make it work.

We need to hack the basement
for Jordan and Janae.

And Janae needs
to be able to cook her meat.

In peace.

And also, we need to transform
this office space into a dining room.

Just a reminder that the dining room space
right now is 11 by 11.

So, how exactly are we going to fit
a dining room and an office in this space?

And storage.

Oh my God, I love it.

When Jess gets excited,
her body starts twitching.

So, what if we could build
something for storage

and take advantage of the high ceilings?

We could do one bookcase here.

We can have a matching unit here.
And we give them some type of shelves

to put all of our dishes,
all of our china and whatnot.

But then, on the bottom here,

I could make this pullout
for office supplies.

-[Ati] I love it.
-[Jessica] I like that.

Now that we got the storage solutions
figured out, I think we have to focus

on this table that is both an office
and a dining room table.

-Yes, I agree.
-[Jessica] Yeah.

What if something
could come up out of the table

and have hidden storage
inside of that for, like, office supplies?

Or power, or monitors?

-Now we're talking. Now we're talking.
-I like that. I like that.

Then, when it goes away,
all the office stuff disappears,

and all the paperwork is gone
and out of there.

[Mikel] I love every time
I see that thing go down.

Okay, but there's still
the problem downstairs, right?

Janae and Jordan
are such a big part of this family

that we have to hack them
their own space downstairs,

and give them a real kitchen,
and also give Jordan some privacy.

[Ati] Yes. So, this is the downstairs.
We've got Jordan's room here.

We've got that open space over here
when you land into the basement.

So I don't think there's a way
to hack that laundry room into a kitchen.

-It's just a very small space.
-Yeah.

[Ati] We don't want to give them
a dorm room kitchen.

-[Jessica] Exactly.
-[Mikel] Right.

There's two things we have to solve.
Number one, getting a kitchen in there.

Number two, privacy for Jordan, right?

And we can accomplish both things

by building out these pony walls

into full walls
and then having a door in between.

Then we have complete separation
of those two spaces.

And we have three different walls
that we can use as kitchen space.

So you're creating
a kitchen out of thin air.

We are. Exactly.

If we hack a kitchen,
I think we have to consider prep space

that also can double for dining space.

[Brooks] I have an idea.

You build a center island,
where you can use that as a prep space.

[Jessica] I think an island might eat up
too much of the real estate.

But this is something
that I just use for inspiration.

Look how easily
it stores away so compactly.

Like, when this is then expanded...
This is solid and rigid.

-I like that.
-It's sturdy, right?

Yeah. I can't wait to go
and get started with the demo.

That way, Janae can have a place

I'm actually thinking
to go with the aesthetic,

some kind of whitish creamy wood,
like a white oak or a white ash.

Something, like, incredibly elegant
that works both dining and office.

I want to build slide-out drawers
to hide office files and receipts.

One more thing.

For this house, we're gonna go for
a modern Afrocentric vibe.

I'm thinking that we should probably

dress the drawers
a little bit with texture.

-Uh, yeah.

Oh yeah. I used to do set decoration and...

Caning is not for the faint of heart.

Cutting a woven fabric,
trying to piece it back together,

it's very hard to do.

It's a tough job.

You have to have precision cuts,
and you have to know what you're doing.

It's so tedious.

It takes forever getting it to stick right
and getting it to look nice.

If we source these shelves,

then we have more
than enough time to cane.

The least we could do
is cane the bottom drawers.

and prep here on this surface.

And then they can have dinner here.

And when it folds back up,

it's basically concealed
into totally integrated open shelving.

So they can store
everything they need right here.

cutting onions next to dryer sheets.

-So, anything else is gonna be a step-up.

How do you plan on making sure

that fried chicken smell
is not pumping back upstairs?

[Ati] Well, we're also gonna have
a recirculating hood over here.

the fried chicken smell
will no longer be wafting

up the laundry vent
into the rest of the house.
