The She Ready Foundation
started with just giving out

suitcases to foster youth,
young people like me

that have been through
the hardships.

Now, we're gonna get
this program started.

It's a big deal.

- I'm doing my first live show
at the Fonda in one month.

I've never done
a concert like this before.

Singing is completely different
than DJing.

I've wanted to cancel,
like, ten times.

- Yeah, I would too.

- When I'm in the DJ booth,
I feel,

like, safe and secure.

But, like, even though it's
always been a dream of mine,

the thought of singing
and dancing onstage

is terrifying to me.

I'm not a professional dancer.

I'm not a professional singer.

I just love what I do.

But icons have
to be able to pivot.

I feel like my ADHD
makes me not remember anything.

I have so much support
around me,

but I just feel super awkward.

I don't know what it is.

Like, just something
in the back of my mind

that just always is,
like, making me feel shy

or weird or insecure.

- I forgot that other part.

I'll be looking
in the mirror, like,

the moves and everything,

and then all of a sudden,
I'll just forget everything.

Or I'll just be like,
people are gonna

make fun of you;

to be my most confident,

But I haven't done the singing
with the dancing yet.

- Yeah. That's just
part of the process.

- Singing and dancing
in front of a massive audience

is no small feat.

Learning all
this choreography,

that's the priority for me.

I'll be performing seven songs
at my concert at the Fonda,

and I need to learn
choreography to all of them.

It's hard because
my back's really messed up.

I think just, like,
years of, like, sliving.

Literally, like, when I DJ,
I'm jumping up and down.

I'm, like, in 5-inch heels.

Then I, like,
go from the stage,

jump onto the floor
with the heels, then fly up.

And I've done that
so many times.

And it was, like,
sh**ting pain the whole time.

So that's what
I'm worried about most.

How's Phoenix?
- We hung out.

I read him a book
about a little bear

that gives you hugs
through the book.

He's gonna be so proud
of Mommy.

- [groans softly]

Mother's Day for me,

his mom and his sister

and, like, celebrating them
as moms and me as a mom.

I just don't even want
to get dressed.

to leave the house.

your first Mother's Day.

That's so sad.

- Since I'm the mom this time,

then I get to choose
what I'm doing.

- My schedule has been
so out of control.

It's just been nonstop.

I'm just trying
to figure out, like,

a balance between everything.

Like, what did you do
when you were a new mom?

- Mm-hmm.

Yeah, I need
to start doing that more.

Paris being a mother,
I know in the beginning,

she was very, very nervous,

just learning
how to hold a baby correctly

with the neck, but with time,

she's gotten more confident,

and I'm so incredibly proud
of her.

- And then he has
this new bouncy thing.

It's, like, those things,
like, at the circus.

- Yeah, he jumps.

- Parenting,
there's no rule book.

It's sort of trial and error,

and you get the hang of it.

I certainly have after three.
[laughs]

- You know how
I've never really talked

to a real therapist
ever since I was a teenager?

- Mm-hmm.

- I found this therapist
that specializes in trauma

and ADHD, so I have her
coming to the house,

like, in the next few weeks.

There's just so much going on
in my life right now,

and I just want to be
the best mom that I can be.

With my book out and all
these new emotions coming up,

it's just hard for me
to handle by myself

and obviously hard
to talk to my family about.

I'm thinking of maybe
having mom come as well.

Not to the first session

because I feel like
I want to just

speak to her alone first.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, I'm hoping
that it's helpful.

I just want to,
like, enjoy my life.

I feel like
I've worked so hard,

and there's just
so much happening.

- Then enjoy your life.

- No, I'm trying to,

but there's just
so much happening.

then I release the book,

my album coming out,

I'm so excited to hit the stage
and perform my favorite hits,

Yeah, my voice coach
says I need to drink,

like, a full one
of these every single day.

Being a new mom, I'm definitely
learning as I go.

What's most important to me
is to prioritize Phoenix,

but I am having
a hard time with that.

really cute baby carrier,

so I'm gonna be
taking Phoenix with me

to his first meeting.

Then from there, we go

For that, I was kind of
playing off, like,

the planets and the world
and the, like,

aesthetic of Earth.

I always wanted to do clouds.

I believe as women,
that we can do everything,

being a mom,
having a successful career.

But I have to admit
that right now,

I just feel overwhelmed.

I feel like I'm not
being the mom

that I know that I can be,

but I don't know how to do it.

- Amazing work on everything.

I'm so scared and nervous.

Seeing that video of Phoenix
laughing for the first time

was such a bittersweet moment.

My heart literally melted
hearing his laugh,

but I also just felt
this pang of guilt

that I wasn't there in person
to witness it.

Reigniting my pop career
is super important to me,

but missing a moment
like this makes me wonder

if it's even worth it.

I've been to therapy
in the past,

but I usually find it
really hard to trust anyone.

- Which horse is most like you
based on the behavior?

- This one is shy.

It doesn't really want
to engage.

It's hard for me to, like,
even talk about my feelings

sometimes because I'm so used
to just not doing it.

- Yeah.

So what's the fear
about not speaking up?

- I don't know.

Dr. Bethany deals
with trauma and ADHD,

so maybe she'll understand me.

- I wanted to let you know that
I did watch your documentary,

and I read one
of your interviews,

so I know some
of the basic themes

and what's happened to you,

so you don't have to re-explain

in ways that would be
traumatizing or triggering.

So given all of that,
where would you like to start?

- I don't really know
because I'm--

never do this,
so I don't even...

know where to start.

- Maybe a good place to start
would be, like,

what causes you to suffer?

- I don't know, I just feel
like there's always this,

like, voice in the back
of my mind,

like, always saying
negative things

and just making me feel bad
about myself

and thinking people
are gonna judge me,

people are gonna
make fun of me.

- Mm.
- I have my baby,

my husband,
this beautiful life,

but even when
the happiest things

are happening in my life,
I just feel the--these--

it just, like,
steals my happiness.

- If you've created
a great life,

but then you can't enjoy it,

that's really problematic.

Has anyone ever suggested
to you

that you have
post-traumatic stress disorder?

- I definitely know I do.
- You do?

Do you know the symptoms
of post-traumatic stress?

- Not all of them.
What are they?

- Avoidance of anything
that's reminiscent

of the trauma, detachment
and estrangement from others--

that's a very common one--
flashbacks.

- The other night
when I was holding my baby,

it was just--

just smiling
and just looking in his eyes

at this little,
innocent human being,

and I was so happy,

and then all of a sudden,
I just started--

I don't even remember
what I was thinking.

I was just...
kind of just, like,

having a flashback to something
bad that had happened to me.

It's like, I should be
in the moment with my son

and enjoying this, but instead,

my mind is, like,
going back to the past

and thinking about, you know,
somebody hurting me.

- It's interesting
that it's when

you're holding your baby
it happens.

Because I know people
who are trauma victims

have a very hard time
happily bonding

with their children.

- Yeah.
- It really does happen,

so I'm glad we're
talking about it.

I'm sorry this is
happening to you.

I mean, this is really tragic

that the trauma is
getting attached

to the maternal bond
with your baby.

I can't fully bond
with the people I love

because something bad's
gonna happen,

just like I was bonded
with my parents,

and these people kidnapped me
in the middle of the night.

Do you think that could be

what's in the mix there
somewhere?

- Probably.
I'm just always expecting

the worst in every situation.

- I'm assuming
you wanted Phoenix, right?

You planned to have a baby?
- Yeah.

Yes.
- Yeah.

How much time are you able
to spend with him?

- Every morning,
I go in and check on him

and feed him
and play with him.

That'll be for, like, an hour.

And then I'll have to go
and get ready.

- Mm.
- But he has his baby nanny.

- Oh, OK.
So you have a nanny.

- I just feel guilty
because I want to be able

to spend every minute with him,

but then I also have
so many responsibilities.

- Does that schedule
preclude you

from spending time with him?

[soft dramatic music]

- It's just a lot
for one person to handle,

with my media company,
all my employees,

everybody who's depending on me
to be the face of this brand.

- But I'm wondering
if you feel like you've

relinquished control
just a little bit.

- Yeah.

- One of the main features
of trauma is avoidance.

When you hold Phoenix
and you're having

that bad feeling,
what would it be like

to try to tell yourself,
what I'm experiencing

with Phoenix now
is completely different

from what happened
to me as a child?

I'm in a house with--
that's very safe.

I'm in charge
of this household.

Nothing bad is gonna
happen to me

because no one could ever
take me away

in the middle of the night
ever again.

This is my baby, so I determine
what happens to this baby.

- Yeah.

Would it be OK
if I brought him in here?

- I would love to meet him.

- OK.
I'm gonna go grab him.

- Phoenix.

You are a beautiful boy.

You know that?

And you look like your mommy.

I'm so glad
you brought him out.

You love hanging out
with your mommy, don't you?

This is probably your favorite
place in the world.

- [laughs]

His new thing
is sticking his tongue out.

I'm glad you found it.

- Aw, I love him so much.

I wish I could spend
every minute with you.

Mommy has to work so hard.

- I mean, you could reframe
that all of your great success

at such a young age
has positioned you

to be able to spend time
with your baby.

- Yeah.
- What about play dates

and hanging out with kids,
because at five months,

moms are all getting together--
and dads.

- Like, all my cousins,
my sister,

everyone's doing music classes

and all of these "mommy and me"
things together,

and I don't have time
to do any of those things, so--

- Could you bring them to you,
like, have a class here?

- Yeah, I've been wanting
to do that,

but then I also get nervous

with him being around
so many people

because he's so little,
that he'll get sick.

- This seems to me it could be
a little bit

of a trauma response,
that if you bond with him more

and take him out and about,
something bad's gonna happen.

- Yeah.

- Can you hear it
in what you're saying?

- Yeah.

- So when it comes
to trauma and anxiety,

we always want our decisions
to be made on data,

not feelings.

What's good for development
with children

is the thousands and thousands
of interactions

that they have with
their mothers back and forth.

In the first two years of life,

the mother actually regulates
the child's heartbeat,

respiration.

Holding the baby, you're still
regulating all of his systems.

- Yeah.
- And gazing eyes

back and forth,
that's really good

for their development,
talking to him.

- [fussing]

- Oh.
Are you hot?

I feel like he's hot
in these pants.

- Is he hot?
- I think so.

- Does he have
a little onesie on?

- Yeah.

They're, like--

are you hot?

The baby nanny,
she always loves being so hot.

Like, the heater is always on.

I always say, "Isn't he hot?"

And she said,
"No, they like it."

- OK, so this is where
you should trust yourself
