Honestly, I think we have
so many eyes on us this season.

It definitely feels like
we're on the brink of, you know,

reaping the fruits of our labor

and enjoying ourselves.

It's my senior year

and this year,
I want to have fun.

But I already knew
it was gonna be stressful

with the classes that I take

and everyone nagging me
about college.

That's on top of skating.

Everyone
in this program multitasks.

Like some of my teammates
they have jobs

and they have school.

We also have clubs
at school

and then there's also
this musical

that we're doing
with another school.

Dance is the hardest
profession in the world.

Just like,
staying dedicated

is like the most difficult part.

And what keeps you
coming back to FSH?

Um, definitely the friendships.

We've worked so hard all season
and we're just at the beginning

of all these
culminating moments.

Lake Placid was very nice.

But now we have
to start preparing

for our big end-of-the-year
Ice Show,

which is the closing act

for the majority
of our students.

Then, our upcoming trip
to South Africa.

This year we decided

to partner
with the Nine Miles Project.

They're a surfing program
for youth in Cape Town.

It's kind of like
a culture exchange thing, like,

we get to show off our skills,

they show us,
like, their skills.

I just hope I get picked

because I was able
to represent FSH in one way,

and hopefully I'll be able

to represent
them internationally.

There's only 11 slots.

I would be disappointed
if I didn't get chosen.

You know, it's one thing
to go to South Africa,

but to go with people
who are close to you,

that's a whole 'nother thing.

I think it's like a really fun,

of the season

because it's a time
for the girls

to express themselves.

They don't have the pressure
of, like, competing.

I remember my first time,
I was, like, getting into it.

Now everybody's waiting
for the skating show,

Last year was my first Ice Show.

Like, when they shout for you

the best feeling ever.

We've held the Ice Show
at Riverbank for decades.

And so it's something
that our FSH community expects.

Come March,
FSH is going to have a show.

When they come to see us,

we're going to give
our community the best.

My name is Vashti Lonsdale,

I am the creative director
of the Ice Show.

The Ice Show, it's a very large
and well thought out process.

It starts with a concept,
an idea, a theme.

You know how
this is the first year

figure skating in Harlem
is going to South Africa?

So, the theme of this show
is Girls Glide Globally.

It is a skating trip
around the world,

ending in Africa, to pay homage
to our South Africa trip.

We wanted all the girls
to be connected

to this international
experience.

And just
showcasing that

gives the girls
a little understanding

of what goes on around
the world, because each group

is highlighting
a different area of the planet.

Our group gets to go halfway
around the world to India.

This is Italian dance party.

The place we're trying
to represent

is the Pacific Islands.

I want you guys to think about
how this music makes you feel

and how you want to move to it.

Ours in particular
is a special part in the show

where we're
going to be performing

the South African
national anthem.

I'm in the South Africa
National Anthem Group

and I'm a little disappointed

that I was an alternate
for South Africa,

because I feel like

that just made me want to go
even more than before.

This is an emotional song,

so I wanna see it in your face
when we're doing this.

I want you to tap into this,

And I know a lot of you can.

So we start with the theme.

And then numbers need
to be mapped out,

you need to do auditions.

Solos are a huge
segment of the Ice Show.

Synchros are a very large part
of FSH,

but they're also very good
skaters individually.

Even though
you're in a group

every single year,
solos are just you

by yourself showing off
what you can do.

You still have to audition.

I feel like everybody gets
excited for solos,

because that's, like,
the biggest role

you can have at the show.

To have that one spotlight
on you,

it just, like, sets apart.

Who's auditioning for the show - solos?

I feel like solo skating,

it's just more my forte.

Because, like,
some things you do

as a solo skater,
you can't do at synchro.

I really love
where I get to do, like,

my Johnny Weir slide.

Because, like, I feel so special
when I do it.

Like, it feels so free.

You just get to show

more of yourself.

Getting out on the ice,

getting out
and putting yourself out there,

that's a hard thing to do.

And so I get excited

to see the students come out
of their shell

and just be courageous.

It's my senior year.

I just wanted to be able
to showcase what I can do

and sort of make up
for last year.

I wasn't in the Ice Show
last year,

'cause I broke my foot.

It was two weeks before
the Ice Show

and I fell down some steps.

The day of the Ice Show,

I had this boot,

just, like, holding up
the pressure to, like, my ankle.

I had two numbers here

and I didn't get to do
any of them.

This year,

I'm hoping that I get my solo.

You gotta have high hopes.

show season has started.

I am organizing tights
by shade at the moment.

How did you sleep?

So I never totally, like, sleep.

There's all that work
that you put in,

but at the same time,
it's a fun bundle of chaos.

People are choreographing,
people are figuring things out

and like it's a lot.

How do they already know
the moves?

We have 200 girls
that we have to costume.

The girls are working

the most confident on the ice.

It's a mountain.

It's a slow burn,

but we get there.

I'm looking
at graduation, prom,

and then I have South Africa
coming up.

You imagine something
months away

and then it gets here
and you're just like,

oh, wow.

Like, it doesn't really hit you

until you literally see it
in your face.

So just before we get started,

let's… Give me one word
that describes

how you're feeling right now
in this moment.

Um, I'm feeling
pretty drained lately.

Like, heavy on
the senioritis is hitting.

But also, like, the Ice Show's
about to happen

and it's just like
choreography after choreography…

- …on top of schoolwork,

- on top of, like, my APs.
- Yeah.

On top of, like, the anxiety
of waiting for my colleges.

- Mm.

It's the steps.

Figure skating does prepare you

for a lot of things,

like the South Africa trip.

This is me going into my future.

I do have lots of hopes
and dreams.

I don't want a boss.
I want to be the boss.

So I wake up every day
and do better to get better.

When you envision your life,

five years after college,

- what does that life look like?
I want to have some type of job

that requires me to travel
all the time.

I expect to be working

I was doing cheerleading.

That was not gonna work.

And, um, I had, like, gone
to this dance team.

Gotta quit, because, like,
I also have to do my schoolwork.

I had to be on top of my grades.

I always try
to be top in the class

as much as I can.

I really want to keep up
being a straight-A student.

- I'm so mad.

Because
I'm not ranked number one.

They do rankings
at your school?

Yeah, I'm ranked second.

- I don't know.

I'm only 14,
but I already have to start

thinking about college.

I want to go
to Columbia University.

And I think
I want to be an engineer.

if I have the chance

to go to the Olympics.

So, the pressure
is definitely real

to get into these
dream colleges.

to set yourself apart.

I'm going to be like,

How many activities

I led the student body
to victory in the debate club.

I was literally volunteering
to help people

in all kinds of ways.

solve cancer.
