The heating always used to fail
when it got too cold.

He watched every youth competition
in Turkey traveling with one of those.

He scouted players there.

That's how we formed
the lineup of the national U-21 team.

FORMER ASSISTANT COACH

For instance,
that's how Rüştü was scouted.

We found Ergün Penbe

when he was playing
for Kilimli Belediyespor.

We discovered Alpay Özalan
when he was at Soma Linyitspor.

We found all our well-performing players

in the remotest of places back then.

Abdullah Ercan, for instance.

He was at Beyoğlu Yeniçarşı.

What's Beyoğlu Yeniçarşı, you ask?
An amateur club in Tophane.

There hadn't been a single player
from an amateur club

ever selected for the national team.

That's how we formed
the next generation of Turkish soccer.

I've been everywhere in Turkey.

Many young players,

have come to my country for years.

And after ten years,

some left without even learning
a few Turkish words.

I've put much more of an effort
in comparison.

I'd like to be able
to address my players in two months.

Of course, my daughters were still here.

They couldn't leave
because of their education.

That made me very nervous,

so I asked a pedagogue.

I said, "I have my husband and my kids."

"I'd like to be able to support both,

but we have
an international situation here."

The pedagogue, whom I was very fond of,

said to me,

"Your kids are old enough."

"Your husband needs you."

"So just spend time with him."

"If you spend quality time
with your daughters when you're back here,

you'll be fine."

One must not forget

that Florence is maybe
the most Italian city of them all.

It's the birthplace of the Renaissance.

There's a certain aristocracy.

They speak beautiful Italian.

A tough city to live in,

as in it's tough to be accepted
as a foreigner there.

You could say that I met Fatih Terim...

Because Galatasaray had been doing
extremely well in the Champions League.

They had eliminated Milan.

They had eliminated Bologna
in the UEFA Cup right after that.

So we took notice of that.

We tried to bring him into Fiorentina
around then, around 2000 and 2001.

FIORENTINA GENERAL MANAGER

It wasn't easy,

but we eventually succeeded

as he too was looking for something new.

After winning
the UEFA Cup with Galatasaray,

he came to Fiorentina.

We knew his curriculum
and his achievements,

but at the same time, we asked ourselves...

"A Turkish coach in Italy?"

That'd be new.

So it was a big deal.

He was the first Turkish coach to work
in a big soccer country like Italy.

He was the first Turkish coach

Fiorentina hadn't been exactly
performing well back then.

They were in a tough spot.

FIORENTINA'S THIRD LOSS IN A ROW
A FIRST SINCE '97

Batistuta, who was a symbol of the club
and was loved by all fans,

was transferred to Roma,

so the fans were upset about that.

The entire city was.

They hadn't been as successful as expected
the year before either.

Nuno Gomes, who was to replace Batistuta,
was the most expensive transfer back then.

As he was a player who arrived
at the same time as his coach,

I believe they've been in touch for years
and still are.

It was the fans who sought him.

That's how they met.

But they met on the streets,

that Terim arrived in Florence
and just experienced the city.

His biggest pleasure
was to take a walk around the city center.

And what did he find there?
He found Florence.

Not through its monuments
or its fabulous works of art,

but through its journalists,
shopkeepers, bartenders,

people who would then go on
to call him "the Grand Emperor."

That was how
the wonderful relationship started,

which grew and came to be

all spontaneously,

without a strategy, so to speak.

It started and blossomed purely by chance
like all the greatest love stories.

This is who I am.

I have strong sense of commitment

to the things I work for.

But Florence

was a place, a city

that stirred up so many feelings in me.

There's no other city like it in Europe.

I was so happy. My family was so happy.

The people were very friendly.

We had great times there.

We like to spend time at home together.

Watching a movie or TV together,

having dinner together

is enough for us.

But in order to keep up
with the way of life there,

we started to get coffee at night
and then come back home...

It's such a beautiful and authentic city

that just walking around...

It was such a great time.

They accepted us,
and we fell in love with the city.

It'll always be a special place for me.

I suppose that was part of the magic.

You just can't put it
into words sometimes.

You can't even explain it
with the scores you get on the pitch.

Because Fiorentina wasn't exactly
crushing everyone back then.

They weren't winners, you know.

THIRD LOSS IN A ROW

It was a bit of an adjustment
at the beginning

because everything was new to us.

New coach, a lot of new players...

We started rough.

In time, the team's mentality

changed to be more offensive.

I'd say they almost inevitably
had to go through that phase

because the technical, tactical,
I dare say revolution Terim brought,

was total and profound.

Fiorentina went from being a cautious team

who would try and play around its rivals

to being a team
who aimed to score more than its rivals,

to impose their game on them,

to take risks, to play very bravely.

FIORENTINA, DREAMS AND CHIESA

Let's not forget

that what took me there

were the games I made my team play

and my success.

Those were the most important factors.

"Would this ever work?"

"This is ridiculous!"

They said a lot.

But at the same time,

there were a lot of people

who appreciated my approach

and wrote about it.

I also remember games that we didn't win.

I remember one in particular,
against Perugia I think.

We lost 4-3 at home,

but the fans were clapping at the end

because the opponent's goalkeeper
had saved 20, maybe 30 shots.

The people of Florence
appreciated the new mindset...

ASSISTANT COACH

...even if it meant the occasional loss.

Maybe we were taking too many shots,

but still, people were having fun
just the same.

So he just kept going

with his game plan,

and in the end, he managed to get results.

THERE'S NO STOPPING FIORENTINA

He did have troublesome games,

but there were
certain iconic ones as well.

For example,

when they wiped the floor with Milan
with a score of 4-0.

I remember the game
we won against Reggina.

We won 92 minutes into the game,
at the very last minute.

where everyone enjoyed themselves.

Fatih Terim's Fiorentina

is hosting Milan who hasn't seen
three points in three weeks.

This is huge for Fiorentina.

I wasn't supposed to play then.

I had gotten injured during warm-up.

I was injured, but there was a lot of...

During warm-up, when kicking the ball,

I felt a sharp pain in my abductor.

I was helpless

when I finished the warm-up
and went to the locker room.

Then Terim told me, "You have to play."

I said, "I will." He said, "You must."

that the greatest regret,

or at least one of the great regrets
Terim has in his career

is not being able to see the finals,

If I recall correctly,

there was a banner at the finals

The admiration
Fatih Terim still enjoys in Italy,

in Florence as well as in Milan,
is very strong.

I think one of Terim's merits is

that he had a great feel
for Italian soccer

which he used
to connect the two countries.

Because even if, all in all,
he only spent a little over a year here,

he managed to become
a part of the fabric of Italian soccer.
