Kay Scarpetta is a brilliant and beautiful forensic pathologist, the protagonist in a beloved series of crime novels.

01x06 - Benton

Post by bunniefuu »

[dramatic music playing]

[Tron] Three individuals
lived on that orbiter.

[Scarpetta] What happened to it?

That's what you're here to tell us.

[Benton] Jared Horton
and Gwen Hainey were partners.

Her m*rder is somehow connected

to the two dead men inside that orbiter.

We're reopening the Cammie Ramada case.

That death was ruled accidental.

[Scarpetta] You didn't happen to see
a flattened penny there, did you?

- No.
- Just trying to establish

a pattern between Cammie's death
and Gwen's m*rder.

Why is Abby Turnbull

always nipping at our heels?

[Marino] So you saying
he strikes tonight?

[Abby] Oh, my God.

[screams]

Actually, I was just
a little worried about you. And Pete.

[grunts]

Hey, hey! Stop.

[Lucy] Pete's fine. He made omelets.

And I'm just dealing with Mom.

[Dorothy] Janet talks to me
like I'm a person.

I mean, Pete's always
been in love with Kay.

[chuckles]

[Scarpetta] You knew
you should've said something to me.

And would you have kept it to yourself?

You wouldn't have shared it with Pete?

[Scarpetta] Oh, you're jealous of Pete.

I don't want you sleeping
in the house tonight.

I am not going anywhere.

[Scarpetta] I think there is something
deeply emotionally wrong with you.

[emotional, dramatic music playing]

[children shouting, laughing]

[Mrs. Wesley] Benton?

Can you hear me?
You're gonna be late for school

again! Hurry up!

[Benton] I'm coming!

You're familiar with
your mother's work, right, son?

You're a doctor who helps
people who can't help themselves.

[Mrs. Wesley] If you are not downstairs

in ten, there will be consequences!

[Mrs. Wesley] Are you often late,

because when you're getting dressed,

there are certain obsessive patterns

you have to follow?

Mm-hmm.

- [Mrs. Wesley] Benton?
- I hear you!

- Over and over, till my brain hurts.
- [Mrs. Wesley] One, two…

[Benton] One.

- [Mrs. Wesley] …three, four…
- Two.

Four… I have to do it again.

I have to go down to up

to go to Heaven.

[Mrs. Wesley] …five…

[Benton] Stop counting so fast.

[Mrs. Wesley] …seven, eight,

nine,

ten!

[Mrs. Wesley] And you just
can't help yourself?

- [Benton panting]
- [buttons clatter on floor]

[Mrs. Wesley] Now, every mind

is different,

and wants different types of help.

[grunts]

[Benton] Is there
something wrong with me, Mom?

[Mrs. Wesley] Some of us just have
a predilection to violence.

[Benton] What's "The Macdonald

Triad of Sociopathy?"

A recent study I just read on symptoms.

Symptoms that will help you
understand yourself.

And that understanding
will keep you from hurting anyone.

Love you, son.

[quiet, ominous music playing]

[panting]

[quiet, introspective music playing]

- [panting]
- [TED Talk] Plainly speaking,

epigenetic effects
are genetic modifications

that don't alter the underlying
DNA sequence

but can be brought about

by things like
early childhood experiences,

environmental factors,
trauma, and behaviors,

ultimately impacting cognitive function
later in life.

The timing and circumstances around…

[indistinct chatter]

[Tron] What are you listening to?

Uh, self-help.

[chuckling] Seems off-brand.

TED Talk.

Warmer.

Did you get home at all last night?

Yes, I was on the phone
for most of it, assessing the level

of national security breach we're in.

It's a huge bag of sh*t, as far as PR.

Well, it doesn't help that Farmer Joe
and his pals saw the crash.

Fortunately, some of them

were open to memory erasure
and mind control.

By that, I mean moonshine.

Jared Horton?

Still in Russia.

Extrication will be tricky, but
the astronaut names are confirmed now.

Richard Vance and Ivan Szewski.

We need that ballistics info
from your wife ASAP.

You don't happen to have any
of that moonshine left, do you?

No chitchat over morning coffee?

Uh, no.

Pillow talk?

I don't believe that that's your business.

Mm-hmm.

Why don't I go call OCME, then?

- Great.
- Yeah? Okay.

[Scarpetta] Cause of death,
exsanguination due to multiple g*nsh*t

wounds, projectiles consistent
with Glaser Safety Slugs.

[Marino] Okay,
so Gwen had a secret boyfriend,

this Jared Horton, right?

And, what,
he murders two astronauts in space

so he can get rich
and run off to Argentina with Gwen?

Yeah.

Apparently.

Man, everybody's having
a better time than I am.

What the f*ck is this, by the way?

It's a bio-synthetic heart.
What are you doing? Put it down.

- It's not a toy.
- Ee. All right.

Uh, well, at least now we know
we have some kind of motive

for Jinx Slater, whoever the f*ck he is.

Right? Jealousy. He finds out his girl

is banging out a spaceman,
so he bye-byes her

- in a jealous rage.
- But there's the Cammie Ramada of it.

Come on. Gwen, Cammie?

Too many commonalities

- for them not to be connected.
- [door opens]

- [Marino shushing]
- Sorry to interrupt,

there's an Agent Tron on the phone

- from the FBI?
- Ah…

You see she's working, right? I mean…

Yes, but I thought she'd want to know.

- Now I do.
- I assume it's about these bodies

in spacesuits that no one signed in?

Thank you, Maggie.

Of course.

[whispering] Come on, tell me
she's not involved in the cover-up.

What, so all of a sudden now,
you're not gonna talk to the FBI?

No, not on the phone.
I'm gonna do it in person.

- Yeah?
- Yeah.

You coming?

f*ck yeah, I'm coming.

See you, fellas.

- [siren whoops]
- [indistinct radio chatter]

[tense, mysterious music playing]

[indistinct chatter]

Thank you.

Abby, I…

[crying]

I'm so sorry.

I was just at the movies.

And then I came in…

Oh, my God, it was so much blood.

The smell.

It's like a, like a sour, syrupy smell?

Yes.

She was my sister.

I know.

- [sobbing]
- I know.

Hey.

I'll take good care of her.

[indistinct police radio chatter]

[Scarpetta] Lucy and I, we just saw Abby

at the mall last night.

Yeah, the way Abby says it,

she headed out about 6:00.

Henna was usually home by 7:00,
after her last class.

It was about 1:00 a.m.
when Abby found her.

[Scarpetta] Knot pattern looks identical
to the other women.

[Marino] Yeah, our boy stays busy.

[Scarpetta] Uh, time of death is between,

um, 8:00 and 11:00 last night.

F… f*ck me.

What?

You just ruled out Petersen.

I had eyes on him the entire time.

You did? Why?

Point is, he didn't do this.

[camera shutter clicks]

Slit top to bottom.

There's a lot of blood
pooled around her torso.

The attack was more violent.

Abby thinks the k*ller was after her.

- [camera shutter clicks]
- 'Cause she made Petersen

the prime suspect in the news.

What, and he wanted credit?

[camera shutter clicks]

It's the fifth victim
in two and a half months.

The city's gonna explode.

- There you go, sir.
- Thanks, I appreciate that.

- [Abby] What the hell are you doing here?
- [Boltz] Ms. Turnbull, how are you?

[Abby] Wait, what is he doing in my house?

- What the f*ck are you doing in my house?
- Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

- [Boltz] What is this about?
- You have no reason to be here!

Get the f*ck out of my house!

[Boltz] There's no need
to yell right now.

[Abby] Get out of here! What is he doing?

- Hey! Hey!
- [Abby] What are you doing…

- I understand that you're upset, but…
- Why… Why the f*ck

- would you need to be in my house?
- [Marino] What is going on?

The prosecutor's office

- believes…
- Get the f*ck out of my house!

- …that ten minutes at a crime scene…
- f*ck out of my house, right now!

- …is worth a thousand photos.
- [Marino] Hey, let's take some air,

- all right? Just go for a walk, come on.
- [Boltz] How about it? My God.

[Abby] Get the f*ck out of my house.

[Abby panting]

Are you okay?

What is he doing here?

I don't know. Come here.

It's okay.

[indistinct chatter]

Mind clueing me in
to whatever that was?

Uh… [sighs]

It's nothing. A few months ago,

Abby took me out to dinner
as a thank you for giving her

this day-in-the-life-of piece
for her paper.

You know, youngest city attorney,

most effective, best dressed,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

- I must've missed it.
- [clears throat]

Well, so, we have…

we have dinner and drinks, and before
you know it, the restaurant's closing.

So…

I take her home.

Right?

She invites me in,

we start kissing, and then…
[clicks tongue]

You had sex?

Yeah.

On the couch. She falls asleep, right?

So I left.

[Abby] I remember having

a glass of wine at dinner, and then
Boltz offered to drive me home.

- And then?
- Nothing.

- Nothing after that.
- Nothing?

That's weird.

I think he drugged me and r*ped me.

What?

Abby? Oh, my God.

And I know he's outside right now,
telling everyone that I'm crazy

and that-that we only went out once.

- Did you file a report?
- No, I didn't…

I didn't tell anyone.

He's a city attorney.
No one's gonna believe me.

- You have to tell the police.
- Are you crazy?

They protect their own.

None of that explains why
she's screaming bloody m*rder at you.

Maybe she's mad 'cause I never called?
Who knows? You know

how women are when they get disappointed.

So all of that,
that outburst, that was…

that was just about her ego?

Huh.

I don't remember a dog, do you?

Either time you were here?

No.

It's probably just
one of those fake signs, you know,

to scare people off.

[Marino] Then why didn't it?

Guess the k*ller must've known
she didn't really have one.

[Abby] You believe me, right?

I mean, you went out with him.

What, with Boltz? No. God, no.

Why?

Did you get a bad feeling?

Uh…

…yeah.

Yeah, I did.

[Yaya] What are you doing home?

I just, uh, I want to check on Lucy
before I head to the office.

You look panicked. Lucy's fine.

Um, yeah. Please don't

take her to the Y today.

Actually, no going out at all.

And trust no one,
even people that you think you know.

Madness.

One cannot keep a small child
inside all day.

- It's not healthy.
- Yeah, I saw a strange car

loitering the other night,

and the driver took off
before I could get a look.

- This, I don't like.
- So keep Lucy inside.

My sister is still on her honeymoon

and Lucy is somehow
in the middle of all of this.

[Lucy] In the middle of what?

He k*lled another lady, didn't he?

[Scarpetta] Yes.

That's why I'd like you
to stay inside for a while.

But he kills grownups, not kids, right?

And he does it in their houses.

[sighs] Must you always be so smart?

Please, honey, for me?

Will you stay inside?

We can't go to the Y? I'll be safe there.

No.

No, I feel better knowing
where you are and where I can

reach Yaya.

Okay, you just shouldn't
be talking to her.

I don't understand.
W-why wouldn't you want me

talking to her?

Because the agreement was
that you only speak to me.

I never agreed to anything like that.

Look, she seemed like
she needed someone to talk to, okay?

Because you decided it was

a good idea to tell her

that Marino is in love with my Aunt Kay.

Like… [groans] Why would you do that?

Because it's the truth.

- Okay.
- I mean, good God, Luce,

if you have any human sensitivity,

all you have to do is look at Pete

when he's around Kay.

- Well…
- [doorbell rings]

- Jesus. Okay, look.
- [doorbell voice] Open

- the pod bay doors, HAL.
- Not another word.

- I swear to God.
- [Dorothy] Good morning.

Hey. No, no, no, no. Don't turn her off.
I wanted to say good morning.

Yeah, well, she turned herself off.

Wow. Is-is, uh, everything okay?

Since when do you care?

Oh, come on. Lucy.

Luce.

I know that it seemed like

last night was going south,

but then, it sort of

turned around and got so much better,

and it was just…
it ended up being lovely, and…

and we had real family time.

We had omelets.

Stop being a f*cking buzzkill.

Honey, just listen.
I came over to tell you

I just rented this fantastic Airbnb.

And Peter and I are moving out.

Congratulations, that's great.

We want you to move out with us.

Just listen. Live with us,

and then, of course,
you can get your own place,

but maybe, just maybe, for a…

a little bit of time, maybe we can,

you know, try to have nights
like we did last night.

If you mean, you know,
Pete almost beating a guy to death

and you black-out drunk?
No, I think I'll pass.

I know, I'm a sh*t mom.

I know it.

But I'm a work in progress.

What do… What do…

What do you mean that Pete

almost beat a guy to death?

It was nothing.

- No, no, no.
- No, no. No.

- Lucy, come on. Tell me everything.
- It was nothing.

- Right now, immediately.
- It was nothing.

- It wasn't a big deal.
- It is a…

He got rough with a-a suspect.

- Oh, oh. Oh.
- Everything's fine. It happens sometimes.

Pete got rough with a suspect?
He doesn't even have

a real job!

I mean, if she hadn't dragged him back

into menial work…

You cannot always
put everything on her, all right?

Oh! Oh, I cannot?

Did you see the mood
she was in last night?

No one needs to be around that sort of

low vibe energy of hers.

Especially you.

I am not moving in with you…

- Wait.
- …Mother.

Just think about it.

Promise me that
you're not gonna say anything to Pete.

Hey, hey, hey, listen.

- I gotta talk to you about something.
- What?

Last night, I-I may have, uh,

thrown a few punches
at Matt Petersen's… his face.

Uh, but you know,
I was trying to draw him out

on the whole Gwen Hainey of it all,
and I got carried away.

But I just…
I wanted you to hear it from me

and not somebody else. Namely… Lucy.

- Lucy knows?
- Yeah.

She was there, unfortunately.

Oh, f*ck.

- What…
- She was there, but we've squared it away

and we had a good talk about it. We did.

But I'm sorry.

Well…

I guess you always wanted
to beat the sh*t out of him.

Yeah. Truer words have never been spoken.

Now here's my question for you.

How the hell is Benton still breathing

after finding out
that you knew that he knew

- about Gwen?
- He slept somewhere down the hall.

- Oh, sh*t.
- Yeah.

- Down the hall?
- Yeah.

I…

Down the hall where?
There's more rooms down there?

[Tron] Maybe Jared Horton got greedy.

He decided he wanted
all the money for himself,

so he had Gwen m*rder*d.

Well, the Russians could've k*lled her,
buried the evidence

that they were buying organs
on the black market.

Maybe Thor

- solved the issue of tissue rejection.
- [cell phone vibrating]

And just didn't bother
to tell anyone about it?

[Benton] Excuse me.

Agent Wesley.

Oh… okay.

All right, thank you.

My wife and Pete Marino are here.

I guess Dr. Scarpetta didn't enjoy
being filled in after the fact?

No, she didn't.
I slept in a chair and my back hurts.

Why a chair? Don't you have couches
and beds in that plantation house?

It's not… I di…

I-I slept in my childhood, uh, lair.

A lair?

[chuckles] What did you do in there?

In that lair?

Uh…

You know, every time I talk to you,
I say at least

one thing I wish I hadn't.

Yeah. Interrogator.
You don't see me coming.

[Benton] Hmm.

Okay.

[Benton exhales]

Well, this is a surprise.

Entirely unauthorized.

Glaser Safety Slugs.

From the two m*rder*d astronauts.

Thank you.

- "In propria persona"?
- Yes, I came in person

because I intend to leave with something.

I'd like to leave with the evidence

that was buried from
the Cammie Ramada case.

[Marino] A woman,
a jogger k*lled on Daingerfield Island

about six months before Ms. Hainey. Hey,

Pete Marino.

- Pleased to meet you.
- Cammie Ramada case was, uh, ruled

- an accidental death.
- [Scarpetta] Well, that's a cover-up.

Oh, come on, let's not introduce
unfounded accusations.

Why are you afraid of the truth, Benton?

- Cammie Ramada case is closed.
- Why are you afraid of the truth?

[Benton] I am not, I don't have anything.

I am asking you
in the interest of justice.

God damn it, Kay,
there's nothing I can do!

All right.
All right, I'm going to exhume her

and find out the real cause of her death.

- That is a bad idea, Dr. Scarpetta.
- Really?

She deserves it. Her family deserves it.

- It's absurd.
- [Scarpetta] Thank you.

You cannot let her do that. You can't.

Well, I think it's interesting
that you think that I can stop her.

- [sighs] That didn't go good.
- Nope.

[car alarm chirps]

[line ringing]

- Yes.
- Hello, Maggie.

I'm ordering the exhumation
of Cammie Ramada's body.

I'm afraid you can't do that.

Actually, I can.

- And I am.
- An exhumation right now?

I really wouldn't, if I were you.

I'll certainly have to run it
by the health commissioner.

- He'll have an opinion.
- Yeah.

Okay. Well, I'm sure he will.

Either get it done
or get the hell out of my office.

Oh… [soft chuckle]

Clock starts now.

[Scarpetta sighs]

- Her next call's to Reddy.
- I don't care.

Let's go to Daingerfield.

[engine starts]

[Marino] Abby wants us to believe
that Bill Boltz, Esquire,

attorney for the Commonwealth,
roofied and r*ped her?

Please, Juanita.

Why would Abby lie?

Bill looks like a male model.

Doesn't mean he didn't r*pe her.

Women throw themselves
at him all the time.

I mean, he could
lay off the cologne, but…

Boltz needs to be added
to the suspect list.

Maybe he's wearing cologne to cover up
a weird smell. We know his office

- uses Borawash.
- Nah.

No way. He can't be a r*pist.

r*pe isn't about having access to women.

It's about having power over them.

- Why didn't Abby go to the police?
- Um…

she was scared
that no one would believe her,

which was pretty intuitive,
judging by your reaction.

No, she was… probably dressed slutty.

Maybe she… wore a short dress?

Doesn't matter what she was wearing.

If Bill drugged her, it was premeditated.

People don't just happen
to have roofies on them.

She has multiple cuts on her clitoris

and both sets of labia.

Our k*ller r*ped Henna with his knife.

Whoa.

That's new, right?

I mean, he ain't done that before.

No.

You want to tell me
how she asked for it, Pete?

"Abby was dressed slutty."

I never said Pete was the world's
most progressive thinker.

Do you think Abby's right?

That she was
the k*ller's intended victim?

The hotshot reporter strangled by
the m*rder*r she made a star?

Uh…

He covers his tracks.

No DNA, no prints, yet

he seems to crave notoriety
at the same time.

If Boltz was the k*ller,

he would've known that Henna wasn't Abby.

Well, maybe it was dark,

and he had no idea
her sister was staying there.

So Henna was a mistake,
and then he just had to finish the job?

When a m*rder*r starts his ritual,
he can't stop himself.

Whoever his intended victim was,

he meant for her to suffer intensely.

[Benton sighs] We know

he's a psychopathic sexual sadist hiding
in plain sight.

He functions well in society,

has above-average intelligence.

Do you think it was the k*ller
who hacked the OCME

to search for Lori's case file?

Could be.

Or…

could be someone looking
to damage your credibility.

sh*t. [laughs]

I met her once.

Lori Petersen.

Where?

At a med conference.

She asked me about work-life balance,

and, um…

…yeah, who-who knows what I told her.

Is there anyone you trust who could
privately help you trace the hack?

Apart from my 11-year-old niece?

Oh, yes, that… that adorable one.

Yeah.

That adorable one

happened to see you
at the movies the other night

with your wife and your daughters.

And she asked me

if I knew if they existed.

[sighs]

That must've been awkward for you.

[sighs]

Hey, what if we flush him out?

[clears throat]

You said the k*ller craves notoriety.

It-it… seems to be fueling him.

So, what would humiliation do?

You want to humiliate him? How?

What if we make
his medical condition public?

- Hmm.
- Hmm.

[Abby] What the f*ck

is Maple Syrup Urine Disease?

It's a condition where

the body can't process
certain amino acids.

So they build up and accumulate
in the blood and the urine.

We suspect the k*ller has this disease,

based on the smell that you

and Mr. Petersen noticed
at both crime scenes.

Never heard of it. Sounds made up.

[Scarpetta] Well, it's real.

The tech just doesn't exist
right now to identify it

as a genetic defect from his DNA.

But the k*ller doesn't know that.

So, you, um…

you want me to explain the basics
of DNA testing in the article?

Make this as*h*le think
that you've somehow discovered

his genetic defect or whatever

via a new form of testing
that doesn't exist?

Yeah.

Uh, but there's more.

Um, if the condition goes untreated,

the amino acids build up in the brain
and they cause mental deficiencies.

[Abby] So you're saying he's Ret*rded.

I think our k*ller prides himself
on having an above-average IQ.

And it… it would bruise his ego
to suggest otherwise.

The hope being that the article
can rattle his cage enough

to flush him out, expose him.

[Scarpetta] Don't be specific
about the disease.

Refer to it as a "metabolic disorder."

[Benton] Abby?

You… you can't improvise.

It could blow up the whole investigation.

I came by your house the other night
to warn you about Boltz

when I heard you guys dated.

Oh, we didn't… um…

Anyway, I saw you had company,
so I drove off.

Uh, may I, uh, use the phone?

There's one in the kitchen.

[Scarpetta clears throat quietly]

Do you mind? Can I…

have one of…

Sure.

[sighs]

How are you?

It feels not real.

My sister being gone, all of it.

[quiet, emotional music playing]

Yeah.

Some people say grief is like a wave.
It, uh, topples you down,

tackles you,
it strangles your chest and then…

and then, just when you think
you'll never breathe again…

…suddenly, you bob up,
squinting in the light.

That's… that's if you can
bear the light.

I had a very different opinion of you
before today,

and it wasn't positive.

That's okay. [chuckles]

I didn't really like you, either.

But I was wrong.

And I'm sorry for what Bill did to you.

Men. [sniffles]

The entitlement.

The taking. And the f*cking taking.

I picked the wrong kind of job.

No one, no one should be driven
from what they love

by someone who feels entitled to it
just by breathing.

I assume you saw who I was with
at my house the other night.

I did.

Yeah.

I can be counted on to keep a secret.

[dramatic music playing]

Thank you.

How did Cammie end up by the water?

Why did she leave the path?

If you run, you run.

Unless somebody's chasing you, right?

You know, I did a little digging,
and that landlord, Cliff?

Turns out,
he's got a fishing license and a boat

that he docks right here.

- Here?
- Yeah. Pretty convenient way

to explain your presence, right?

- If anyone was to see you.
- Hmm.

[Marino] Uh, hang on, hang on.

- It was this way.
- Yeah.

[Scarpetta] How did Cammie
end up by the river?

[contemplative music playing]

[Scarpetta] I'm running on the trail.

It's dark, it's quiet.

Thoughts disappear.

Just my footsteps.

[dark music playing]

[Marino] I've been waiting for you.

Watching you.

- [panting]
- I hear the voice in my head:

"This is her.

- [twig snaps]
- [yelps]

This is her."

[whimpering] No. No!

No! [grunts]

[screams]

[grunting]

[loud grunt]

[muffled yelling]

[thunder rumbles in distance]

[insects trilling]

[Marino] You spraying for blood?

No.

I'm spraying for the penny.

You think that the penny's a signature?

Maybe.

Turn that off.

[atmospheric music playing]

[Marino] Huh.

Get the f*ck out of here.

[train passing by]

- Evening.
- Good evening to you.

Might I interest you in a little vino?

- No, thanks.
- Okay.

[Dorothy] Mmm.

That's an $800 sip.

Wow, fancy.

Want me to leave you
a little cash on the counter?

No, I do not.

I just thought that maybe you'd like to be
aware of what it is that you're imbibing.

- That is a Château Lafite Rothschild.
- Mmm.

I had one of 300 limited cases…

now 299… in existence.

[Dorothy] Ah.
Well, you don't care about money.

You spurn it like those
who've always had it.

And you spurn it because it came to you
too easy and makes you feel like a phony.

Okay. [laughs]

Here we go.

We're talking like in-laws now.

- I love it!
- I am a psychologist, as was my mother,

and as such,
I do have some insights into things.

Really? That's so interesting.

I just, I'm wondering,
with all of your, uh,

genetic passed-on
psychological insights…

…if you ever gleaned
that my husband Peter Marino

was and is in love

with your wife?

[low, dark music playing]

[Scarpetta sighs]

- [scoffs]
- What?

- sh*t.
- What is it?

[sniffles] Reddy is summoning me
to his office tomorrow morning, so…

- Oh, sh*t.
- …I'm, I'm being fired.

You're not being fired.
What are you talking about?

Yeah, no, I am.

- It say that on the thing?
- I'm definitely being fired.

- Come on.
- And this expedition

to, uh, Daingerfield Island,

that probably sealed the deal, so…

Jumping to conclusions.

Do you tell Dorothy everything?

Well, put it this way, if…

if I don't, after a couple of drinks,
it's gonna come out anyway, so…

Tell you, though,
I wish she wouldn't tell me so much.

'Cause your sister's got the gift of gab.

Can you believe
Benton hid this sh*t from me?

Yeah, but it's kind of his job, you know?

I mean, he kind of had to, right?

- Come on.
- What?

- You wouldn't do that.
- I-I… Well, that's different,

you know, I never had…

I never had that much sense
when it came to you. Right?

Marino is not in love with Kay.

Well, that's not what Janet says.

Janet? Oh, oh, we-we go by Janet now?

- She's not even really a person.
- Oh, no… [shushes]

You're not allowed to say that.

No, no, no, I have been course-corrected
on that score for the last couple days.

- [sighs]
- No. Can't say it.

You know, you-you may not know this,
but I see it all the time with men.

You kn… Kay is conventionally beautiful,
she's smart, tall.

- Men are often beguiled by her.
- Yeah. You know what else she is?

[dramatic music playing]

She's selfish.

She is. She's selfish.

She's the kind of woman
who blows off her niece's birthday party.

And she's also the type of woman who
forces her brother-in-law to work for her.

Now, I mean, what's that about?

I think you've had a lot of sense
when it comes to me.

Well…

I always felt protective of you.

It's a lot of years
we're working together, right?

Which, by the way,
how am I gonna keep a secret from you?

Well, you'd think Benton
would feel the same, right?

Couples fight. Couples fight,
they make up, they-they move through it.

You're gonna move through it.

- Just…
- Okay.

…maybe take it down a notch, you know?

What?

Up on your high horse…

- Excuse me? Excuse me?
- Well, you know,

- High horse? Come on.
- …getting all up in arms

about Benton's silence

and, I mean,
you got a pretty big secret yourself

you've been hiding from him, right?

Okay, there are secrets
and then there are necessary secrets…

- What…
- …and the necessary ones need to hold.

[Dorothy] You're saying
that you have never wondered

what they're getting up to
on their nightly, uh, joyrides?

I-I know my wife.

Oh, you do?

- Mm-hmm.
- Oh, good. Perfect.

- Perfect.
- You think I don't?

I think you know the parts

of her that she wants you to know.

You ever think, maybe if, if you told him
the truth all those years ago,

that maybe he might, in some,
you know, butterfly effect

kind of scenario,
have told you the truth now?

[tense music playing]

Maybe, right?

It's been a long time, Dorothy.

I think I know a little more than that.

[breathes deeply]

[Dorothy] Huh.

Okay.

Well, then, you know…

why she is so freaked out

that this Matt Petersen case has
come back to haunt her.

Yeah.

Because it was her
first big serial case. She…

she couldn't be wrong.

Mm, no.

No. [clears throat]

That's not it.

[tongue clicks]

You don't know, do you?

Stop being cryptic.

Know what?

Ask her.

I'll write you a check for the bottle.

[softly] Good.

- [rapid knocking on door]
- [Dorothy] I'm here!

- Mom?
- [knocking continues]

[Dorothy] Oh, come on.
It's cold out here.

- [Scarpetta] Whoa, you actually came.
- Of course I came.

Lulu.

What are you doing here?

Oh. Your aunt called

and told me there's a maniac m*rder*r
running rampant,

and I had to come get you.

Okay, well, not those exact words.

- Why would you do that?
- Well,

in fairness, I never thought she'd come.

Uh, but Luce, my work has
become complicated and dangerous,

and I just, I-I can't spend
the kind of time that I want with you.

Well, I'm not going.

I know I've been a sh*t mom,

but I'm a work in progress.

Well, I want to stay
and help with the investigation.

[Dorothy] You're an 11-year-old kid.

What are you gonna do?

You gotta be kidding me.

You're the one who called me.

I am taking my daughter home
where she is safe.

[Scarpetta] It's just…

I-I, I mean, I could use her help

trying to figure out
who hacked my computer system.

It might lead us to the k*ller, and no one
would ever know that Lucy was involved.

Please.

[groans] Whatever.

Yay. I'll get the wine.

I could use the break anyway.

- From your husband of one week?
- [sighs]

Men just get so clingy.

Just when you don't want them to be.

[exhales]

Perfect.

Gotta take the edge off
with a k*ller on the loose.

Eh, you're not really his type.

As Mick Jagger famously said of me,
I'm everybody's type.

- You don't know Mick Jagger.
- Of course I do.

- She's such a liar.
- I am not.

- Oh, my God.
- [laughs]

Ugh, and she's just acting so hurt

that I don't want to live
in an Airbnb with them.

Like… [sighs]

[Janet] She's hurt
because you take no interest in her.

- Oh.
- Well, you don't read her books

or treat her like a person.

I mean, you take her for granted.

[scoffs] So, what, you're just gonna be
on her side all the time now?

- I'm not on any side, I just…
- Okay.

…think you could be nicer to her.

Mm.

You know, she might not always be around.

What the f*ck does that mean?

Nothing.

No, seriously. What does it mean?

- I didn't mean anything.
- [phone ringing]

Okay?

Oh. I, um…

- I have to take this. Okay?
- Luce…

[sighs]

Hey. Oh.

- [Fruge over FaceTime] Hey.
- Hi.

- [clears throat]
- Hi.

I-I wasn't sure you were gonna pick up.

So, um, what's the latest?

Uh, we still can't locate Jinx Slater.

- Mm.
- He's just disappeared.

Or he was disappeared.

- Spoken like an ex-fed.
- Okay.

Okay, hold up,
is that "I, I Want to Believe"?

- Yeah. Scully.
- Scully?

Yeah, duh.

Okay, so, good taste.

- Cool.
- Mm-hmm.

Have you given any more thought
to, um, that rain check?

Oh, with your bottle of something shitty?

Yeah, I, uh…

I have.

I have. I…

I-I certainly… have.

Okay.

[thunder rumbles]

[keys jingling]

[exhales]

- Hey.
- Hey.

I shouldn't have acted like that
at your work.

Uh, that was not right.

I'm sorry about that.

[Scarpetta exhales]

[Benton grunts]

[Scarpetta scoffs]

You want to say anything or…

What happened with the Matt Petersen case

that made you so afraid for it
to come back into question?

- You're drunk.
- So what?

Everyone drinks in this house.

Isn't that so? They drink, they fight.

I mean, I want to know your secret.
That's all.

- God… My secret?
- Just want to know your secret.

- What secret?
- You have a secret

- you haven't you told me.
- I…

What are you talking about?

What happened with the Petersen case
that made you so afraid for it

to come back into question?

Nothing.

Did you sleep with him, Kay?

You're crazy. No, I did not sleep…

- I don't know what you're…
- Well, you dated Boltz

and never told me.
…talking about now, this is you…

I never dated Boltz.

- I told you everything.
- Dorothy told me. Dorothy knows.

I've told…

What did Dorothy say?

No, what did Dorothy say?

I'll bet Marino knows, too.

No, what did Dorothy say to you?

- Should I ask Pete?
- [thunder rumbles]

- I'm not getting anything from you.
- Where is this coming from?

Where is it coming from?
It's coming from me.

Me, your husband.

I am asking you to be honest with me.

Tell me the f*cking truth, Kay,

- or I'm leaving.
- There is no truth.

There's no truth.
There's no lie. There's nothing.

And if you want to leave, then leave.
Just leave.

Disappointing.

[somber music playing]

[thunder rumbling]

[sighs] f*ck.

[sniffles]

[sighs]

[* Lou Reed sings "Perfect Day"]

Just a perfect day

Drink sangria in the park

And then later

When it gets dark, we go home

[sighs]

Just a perfect day

[fly buzzes]

Feed animals in the zoo

Then later a movie, too, and then home

[buzzing]

Oh, sh*t.

Oh, it's such a perfect day

I'm glad I spent it with you

Oh, such a perfect day

You just keep me hanging on

[electricity sparks]

You just keep me hanging on

Just a perfect day

[electricity crackling]

Problems all left alone

Weekenders on our own

It's such fun

Just a perfect day

You made me forget myself

I thought I was someone else

Someone good

Oh, it's such a perfect day

I'm glad I spent it with you

Oh, such a perfect day

You just keep me hanging on

You just keep me hanging on

You're going to reap

Just what you sow

You're going to reap

Just what you sow

You're going to reap

Just what you sow

You're going to reap

Just what you sow
