01x03 - Greed

Post by bunniefuu »

[ominous music playing]

[dog] Hey! Hey, come on!

What's happening in there? Huh, huh?

Frankly, it's a little difficult

to describe.

- [both grunting]

- [Komorineko] Hey! Stop that!

- Don't push me!

- It isn't fair, you heckcat!

Let me put all these eyes

to use! [grunting]

[Komorineko] In the time we've known each

other, have I ever once not been unfair?

No. Your cruelty's quite consistent.

What? I've been nice to you once or twice!

[dog] Let's keep our eyes peeled.

"Eye" get it.

- [Akuma munching]

- [whimsical music playing]

[Shingo sighing]

So, how've things been lately?

[Akuma] What? Be specific.

Have you been taking care of yourself?

Uh, are you eating well?

[Akuma] Sure.

Have you and Mephisto the Third

been getting along okay?

[Akuma] Sure.

- [Shingo] Why don't we spend--

- Sure.

[Shingo sighing]

[both sighing] This isn't going well.

[Akuma] So what's your angle?

You wouldn't have had Komorineko

and Hyakume drag me here without a reason.

Well, because I enjoy seeing you

from time to time.

I mean, you're my son.

We're supposed to chat

every now and then. Hmm?

[Akuma] "Tell me, my son! Any progress

on the Millennium Kingdom plan?"

"Nope, not a bit. Good talk, Dad."

As the new Akuma Kun,

I am called upon

to create the Millennium Kingdom,

a happy paradise

for all the people of the world.

As if anyone dead or alive

can define paradise.

[book slamming]

[Akuma] It's difficult enough

to define happiness.

Agreed?

Might seem as simple

as having food, clothes, and shelter,

but there are social factors, too.

And according to Maslow's

hierarchy of needs, the real--

Slow down for a second.

Now, my dear boy

tell me what happiness means to you.

[music stops]

[Akuma] To me?

[opening theme music playing]

AKUMA KUN

[all] We command thee

to obey our bidding and appear before us.

Aglon, tetragram,

vaycheon stimulamaton ezphares!

Retragrammaton olyaram

irion esytion existion!

Eryona onera orasym mozm messias soter,

Aglon, tetragram, vaycheon stimulamaton!

[ominous music playing]

[all] Ezphares retragrammaton

olyaram irion esytion existion!

Adonay, aglon, tetragram,

vaycheon stimulamaton ezphares!

Adonay, aglon, tetragram,

vaycheon stimulamaton ezphares!

[chanting continues]

[dramatic, ominous music playing]

[man] When humanity mastered fire,

we gained access

to countless new forms of food.

Thanks to this sudden abundance

of nutrients, we developed larger brains,

and, in time,

we became the ultimate apex predators.

What does this tell us?

Put simply, that food and man

have a profound relationship.

I daresay that food is what set

our species on its present course.

It has dictated our destiny.

Ah, yes.

You noticed my statue, huh?

The great devil, Satan.

I want to eat his flesh!

[food sizzling]

Oh, Mio!

Hey! Come down and eat!

[Mio] 'Kay!

[both clapping] Thank you for this food.

[Mio straining]

[Chusuke munching]

Haven't heard from Akuma Kun or Mephisto.

I'm always wondering

if those boys get enough to eat.

[Mio] They told me

they're doing a job for a rich guy today,

so I bet they're eating juicy steaks

instead of pork chops.

- [Mio groaning]

- [Sanae] Huh?

[Mio exhaling]

Sorry, honey.

I guess cheap meat just doesn't cut it.

[Mio] It's still yummy.

[thunder rumbling]

[Mephisto III] Hey, about our steak,

this isn't demon meat,

right, Mr. Tobayama?

[Mephisto III chuckling nervously]

[Akuma] So,

you want to eat the flesh of Satan.

And why is that?

What's your endgame?

[Tobayama] Merely to satisfy my appetite.

I have consumed

many forms of sustenance.

From rare delicacies

that even kings and queens can only covet,

to victuals so vile,

even peasants would refuse them.

However

[plate shattering]

regardless of their quality,

such foods can no longer nourish my soul.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Tobayama yelling]

I wish to consume a dish that no one

before me has ever dared to try!

A dish teeming

with mystery and possibility.

I desire to taste the flesh

of the Dark One.

The flesh of great Satan himself!

Oh, Satan, I yearn to know

what you feel like between my teeth.

Are you sweet

with luscious and savory evil,

or musky with the tang of feral beasts?

When I place your flesh

betwixt my lips [slobbering]

I'm sure that I will finally relish

the flavor of true happiness!

[Mephisto III gasping]

Happiness. Huh.

Huh?

To be clear,

I'd just need to summon Satan.

You're fine

to broker your own deal with him?

You can both be assured

that price is no object.

[Mephisto III] Excuse me!

I'd have thought

you might be aware of this,

but summoning Satan

isn't exactly a trivial matter.

And it's nearly impossible!

He's not some small-fry.

And even if we did dredge him up,

there's no way he'd agree to be filleted--

[Akuma] Actually, that should depend

on what our client can offer him.

Hold on!

Are you really going to take this job?

That isn't what I said at all.

But your assertion that there's no way

the man could come to an agreement

with Satan is completely baseless.

Why you

Has it ever occurred to you that

I might actually have an occasional point?

Ah, yes.

I desire his body, so making an offering

in exchange would be kind.

In that case

[g*n firing]

[dishes shattering]

[Mephisto III gasping]

[Tobayama cackling]

Do you relish it, Satan?

Is it human souls you're after?

If so,

I'll give you as many as you'd like!

[g*n clattering]

We we need to leave, Akuma Kun.

This guy's out of his mind!

[Mephisto III gasping]

[Mephisto III screaming]

[breathing deeply, sighing]

[Tobayama cackling]

[Mephisto III screaming]

[Mephisto III grunting, groaning]

I'll feel that tomorrow.

[Mephisto III gapsing]

Akuma Kun!

If you can hear me up there,

then use that magic circle of yours

to teleport me back, okay?

[heavy footsteps approaching]

[ominous music playing]

[creature growling]

[gasping] Pleased to meet you,

sir or madam.

That entity has been without food

in my dungeon for two weeks now.

I can only imagine

how famished it must be.

So, what is it? Some kind of bear?

[Tobayama] No. It's human.

[Mephisto III shuddering]

[Tobayama] Or perhaps I should say

it's four humans folded into one another,

baked to beastly.

I hired sorcerers

to do the same job you're here to do.

Their attempt failed.

And that unappetizing recipe

was the result.

[creature roaring]

[Mephisto III yelping]

[Mephisto III grunting]

Come on, then!

Supernatural Lightning Shock!

Get over here! I wanna eat!

Not a chance! Absolute Zero Freeze!

[woman cackling] I'll be filthy rich now!

That's as much as I can manage

without Akuma Kun to lend a hand.

[woman] Stimulamaton!

Guess I'd better run!

k*ll me!

I'm sure Akuma Kun

is on the way to save me!

Why are you taking so long?

[Tobayama] Are you not desperate

to save your friend?

He's not my friend.

We're really just business partners.

And we wouldn't even be that

if not for my father.

Huh?

[Mephisto III] You save me now,

and I'll treat us to ramen

next time we're out!

Free meal on me!

Well, you win.

I've got no choice.

Since you insist,

I'll summon the great devil Satan for you.

- [choir vocalizing ominously]

- [Akuma] Satan.

Hell's greatest commander,

chief to hundreds of demons,

a sinister paragon

who recognizes no equal.

None have succeeded in summoning Satan

since sages from the Far East,

some 3,000 years ago.

[footsteps approaching]

This is pathetic.

But what kind of sigil should be drawn

to summon Satan?

There isn't a grimoire around

that describes the proper way.

Although, there do exist a number

of universal rules one should follow.

For example,

"Water" beneath "fish?"

Wow. How dumb.

Now

fish live in water,

and to that end,

within the study of depth psychology,

they symbolize the unconscious mind.

Here they represent

the maternal world in one's personality.

Therefore, what I should draw

in the opposite position is--

[Tobayama] I'm watching your every move.

If you try to pull anything funny,

I'll purge that entire dungeon

with a wall of flame.

Would you like him cooked rare

or well-done?

Given his unpalatable physique,

I imagine he'd taste cheap

and common regardless.

[upbeat suspenseful music playing]

[Akuma] The rite of Satanic summoning

has always been wreathed in mystery.

But summoning is a science

of knowledge and deduction.

This mystery can be solved.

[Mephisto III grunting]

- [creature warbling]

- [Mephisto III panting]

- [woman] I'm rolling in dough!

- [Mephisto III] Dang it!

Without Akuma Kun, I don't stand a chance.

Taken out by a toad.

[grunting] I better hop to saving myself

so I don't croak.

Absolute Zero Freeze!

[Mephisto III grunting]

[Mephisto III straining]

[Mephisto III grunting]

[Tobayama] Hmm?

[footsteps thudding]

[Mephisto III breathing heavily]

You've made an enemy

of Mephisto the Third!

Gird your loins!

Come now.

You're nothing but a snarky little brat.

[Mephisto III seething, gasping]

[Tobayama grunting, screaming]

[Tobayama groaning]

And that's why you feed your pets.

[music stops]

[Akuma sighing]

[Akuma] Okay.

Just one thing left.

The symbol

that goes in the center of the circle.

Is it "salt" or is it "mask?"

[contemplative music playing]

[footsteps approaching]

And I've returned!

[chuckling]

I escaped that death pit all by myself.

It was no big deal.

Where'd he go?

Hey, you can stop now!

The bad man's beaten.

All I have to do now is say the words,

and I can find out if I have it right.

Akuma Kun! Why aren't you listening to me?

Elohim, Essaim. Elohim, Essaim.

I entreat thee to heed my call.

[Mephisto III yelling]

Awaken from thy slumber, oh mighty spirit.

Rise from thy corrupted realm.

- Rise from smoke and vapor.

- What is your problem?

[Akuma] In the name of the father

of humankind, I command thee!

[Tobayama cackling]

Very good!

Yes, keep going! [cackling]

Bring him here!

Bring me the master of demons!

[Mephisto III] Akuma Kun,

look at yourself!

You're risking your life!

You don't have to be right.

Let this one go!

[Akuma] Rise up! Answer my call!

[music fades]

[Mephisto III gasping]

[Akuma gasping] I was wrong.

I guess I should've gone

with "mask" after all.

[Akuma groaning]

[Mephisto III gasping] We're changing!

[both screaming]

[demon cackling]

[thunder rumbling]

[both groaning]

Wait. Akuma Kun, we're fine.

We aren't an amalgamation.

- [Akuma] Can't believe it.

- [Mephisto III] Hmm?

The circle broke.

The summoning was a failure.

Yet, somehow

[Mephisto III grunting]

[demon] Your survival was unlikely,

but not impossible.

Nothing is in this world.

Hang on. Aren't you the maid

who got shot to death?

[groaning, exclaiming] Why!

Why does nothing make sense today?

Incidentally, this magic circle of yours?

It's an embarrassment.

The "salt" or "mask" question

should be the least of your worries.

Oh yeah?

[Mephisto III shuddering]

[Mephisto III] Is-- Is that--?

Yeah. That's a human heart.

[Mephisto III yelping]

[Tobayama groaning]

[Tobayama breathing raggedly]

[Akuma] So, are you Satan?

[Satan] Hmm.

But how?

Did you get summoned after all, then?

[Satan] Summoned?

In any case,

when I place your flesh betwixt my lips,

I'm sure that I will finally [slobbering]

relish the flavor of true happiness.

[Satan] Happiness is desire.

The sweetest of scents.

We demons are drawn to desire.

And we are always watching.

Covet something enough, and we will come.

This heart is so packed with desire.

It reminds me of

that funny little delicacy

that you humans go

to so much trouble to produce.

The name of it is on the tip of my tongue.

Ah, yes.

Foie gras.

[Satan slobbering]

[dramatic music playing]

[Akuma] Elohim, Essaim. Elohim, Essaim.

I entreat thee to heed my call.

Well, well

[Akuma] and bestow potestate diaboli

unto thee.

Absolute Zero Freeze!

While we've got you here [grunting]

[both gasping]

[ominous music playing]

Ah. Now to teach you boys some humility.

[Akuma and Mephisto panting]

[Satan] I have to say,

I'm in a wonderful mood.

It's because I've found the next heart

I'd like to harvest.

You are a glutton for knowledge,

no better than that gourmet.

You'll drown in your desires in the end.

Once your heart's so full of want

that it's fat and round and fit to burst,

you and I shall meet again.

Till then, you may live.

[Mephisto III] This is unbelievable!

Just how long is this corridor anyway?

- [Akuma] He's toying with us.

- [Mephisto III] Well, isn't that fun.

[both panting]

[intense sinister music playing]

[Tobayama screaming]

[Satan] Ah.

[Satan cackling, grunting]

[Tobayama groaning, exhaling]

[body thudding]

[Satan] Disgusting.

[both panting]

[Mephisto III grunting]

Oh, that hurt!

Huh?

You don't have to-- [grunting]

[Akuma] Don't say a word.

[Akuma grunting, straining]

[both grunting]

Well, well.

So, that was the second incarnation

of Akuma Kun.

Abandoned by humans and demons alike,

and still bears the scars.

Intriguing.

In due time, that wet-eared brat

could become the key

that opens the Gate of Holos!

[Satan cackling]

[Akuma and Mephisto III panting]

[music fades]

[Mephisto III] Hey!

[Akuma grunting]

Now can you tell me why

I just punched you in the face?

I would say

that you have an unbridled rage.

[Mephisto III] I hit you

'cause you're taking life for granted.

It's bad enough that you risked my life,

but you risked your own life as well.

And you did it for nothing!

You and I have a responsibility

to fulfill a destiny.

It's why we're here!

How dare you put your ego

before your purpose.

Till trust is rebuilt,

you'll need to treat me to ramen daily.

Let's go home.

MILLENARIANISM RESEARCH INSTITUTE

MILLENARIANISM RESEARCH INSTITUTE

- [contemplative music playing]

- [pot bubbling]

SOY SAUCE RAMEN

[Sanae] Oh. [chuckling]

- Thank you so much for the sweet gesture.

- Yummy.

We both appreciate you.

It's no trouble at all.

If this one doesn't start packing

good deeds into his schedule,

he's gonna end up in hell.

I'm so happy!

This is good!

[Sanae] It is, isn't it?

[Mio giggling]

[Shingo] Tell me

what happiness means to you.

[Akuma] To me?

No idea.

Then why not focus

on working that out? Sound good?

[music fades]

[birds chirping]

[Sanae humming]

[sinister music playing]

[Sanae's humming continues]

[Sanae] Hmm?

[Sanae gasping]

[ending theme music playing]

[inaudible]

[Shingo] Hyakume, Komorineko,

were you watching?

[Hyakume] Akuma Kun,

you and the second Akuma Kun

don't seem to get along very well.

[Komorineko] The great master

has reformed a ton of demons,

but just can't break that boy's spirit.

What a tough nut to crack!

[Shingo] He's actually a good kid.

I don't think he's ready

to open his heart yet.

[Hyakume] If you had your eye on me,

I'd do whatever my daddy told me to do!

[Komorineko] You have a dad?

I thought your family was dead. Oops!

[Shingo] Ah, yes.

The rest of the Hyakume have departed,

but our friend here is searching

for a powerful magic

that may be able to restore the species.

[Hyakume giggilng] Sure am!

I've got two big dreams in life,

and that's one of 'em!

Now, where to start.

[Komorineko] You've got two dreams?

What a greedy Gus!

Uh, but good luck, I guess.

[Shingo] Agreed!

Focus your intention and never give up!

[Hyakume] I won't if you don't, Akuma Kun!

[Komorineko] Think of the rest

of the Twelve Apostles across the world!

I bet they're all working hard!

[Shingo] They're putting all of their

energy into achieving their goals!

[Hyakume] I miss everyone.

It's been too long since we got together.

Speaking of,

what are you doing in Japan, Komorineko?

[Komorineko] I'm on vacation.

A little R&R is good for the fallen soul.

[Hyakume giggling]

I guess dream-free is the way to be!

[Komorineko] Me? I've got loads of dreams!

My biggest dream now is to make a huge hit

out of Komorineko-print umbrellas,

and sell heaps of 'em for cheap.

Once I rule the world's umbrella market,

I'll jack up my prices and get rich!

It's a huge dream, I know, but, uh--

Oh, I'm alone.
