01x12 - Quarter Thumbs-Up

Post by bunniefuu »

YEARS AGO

[orcs grunting]

[BROUGHSTON] I was different

from the rest of my pack.

I knew that much by age five.

It was not hard to see.

I looked different, of course.

But moreover, I could think

in complex thoughts.

I obtained books

left behind by humans,

and from them,

learned about their culture.

After realizing most humans

have unique names,

I decided "Broughston"

would be my own.

Orcs exchange opinions

using their fists.

It is through this practice

they come

to understand each other.

- [thuds]

- But perhaps

because I was too powerful,

I received nothing

from these exchanges.

I sought to improve

the lives of my people,

so I made fire

and built us dwellings.

I gave them the tools

they needed

to communicate in new ways.

Until,

before I knew it,

they began

worshipping me as a god.

There were no longer

any from my pack

who dared approach me.

Not even my family.

I would see them solve disputes

through fistfights.

After, they would share a meal,

all the closer,

while I could only

watch from afar.

Back then

I was completely alone.

[wind gushing]

One day,

I strayed from the pack

in search of firewood.

Never suspecting

what I would find

upon my return.

[rumbling]

I had no words for what I felt.

Although,

I cannot say

it was for the reasons

one would expect.

I was not speechless

out of grief

but because I knew

this changed nothing for me.

They were gone.

Every family member

I once knew.

But I did not feel a thing.

[fire crackling]

[leaves rustle]

- Hm?

- [Reinhard grunts]

[REINHARD]

I found you, orc!

I'm impressed

you could dodge that!

Wait, this orc has a book?

And that must be the wyvern

that's been

terrorizing the nearby town.

Was that your doing?

Yes.

I didn't actually

expect you to respond.

I had been asked

to take care of an orc

some townsfolk spotted nearby

but that doesn't seem

terribly ethical

now that I know you can talk.

Well, I'm sorry for

attacking you out of the blue!

Don't fret.

It is hardly

a strange response.

You're quite the peculiar guy!

I'd be interested in

hearing more about you!

I get it.

Not hard to imagine

why you wouldn't mourn them

when you barely felt like

one of them to begin with.

And of course

that also explains

why you'd want a friend

who can fight with you

as an equal.

Thank you.

Though I do not believe

it is a wish

that can be granted.

Say, Broughston,

we're both trying to make

unrealized dreams come true.

How about

we try working together?

- Go on.

- Gladly!

Once upon a time,

I actually fought

alongside the hero Yamato!

To this day, people call me

Reinhard of the Legendary Five!

[BROUGHSTON]

The Legends of Yamato?

I have read that book.

It's set two hundred years ago.

[REINHARD] Oh!

Big reader, are you?

Well, you're looking

at the author!

That story's my life!

- [laughs]

- I suspected

the accounts were too specific

to be fictional

but are you suggesting

that every page is true?

[REINHARD] Yeah.

Though good luck

convincing my editor of that!

[laughs]

[BROUGHSTON]

Then if I follow

your "dream" is

to defeat Kaiser Alsapiet?

[REINHARD]

You got it in one.

[BROUGHSTON] No one can say

you have low ambitions.

Indeed.

We'd be chasing

after an impossible dream.

In following my own,

we may be able to find

what you've been looking for.

Shall we?

Hmm.

Very well.

It sounds fun.

[REINHARD]

Great, then it's settled!

Broughston the lonely orc!

All shall gather 'round us!

And as we pursue this dream,

let us find some

who may rival your strength

among the crowds!

[BROUGHSTON] Thus

did I become an adventurer.

And on that day,

we founded Orichalcum Fist.

It was just as he told me.

We were able to find many

whose power equaled my own.

[laughs]

- [slices]

- Each excelled

in their own areas

and had unique specialties.

But strong as they were,

none could engage me

in a fistfight

like that between orcs.

That brutality was

not where their talents lay.

[MIZETT]

brought us together!

[BROUGHSTON]

As an attempted remedy,

I made my training plan.

[MIZETT] Good luck ever finding

someone crazy enough

to go through

training like that!

Hmm.

[door opens]

[sighs]

I did not want to give up

but I believed I had no choice.

That my dream would die there.

- And yet,

- [wind blows]

you never know

what the winds of fate

will blow your way.

Which brings us here.

I've wasted your time with

a long and unimportant story.

Please pay it no heed.

Let us continue our match.

[RICK]

Hm.

These past two years

he's stayed by my side,

morning, noon, and night.

He was there!

Did I ever realize

how much of his time

he devoted to bettering me?

So what now?

I can out-speed

with Thread Slash,

out-range with Air Shot,

but would fighting that way

be the right thing to do?

Very good.

That's the orcish

customary gesture

called the quarter thumbs-up.

An oath to drop one's guard

and focus simply

on the trading of blows.

[RICK]

Hm.

[gasps]

Is he mad?

He's giving

the quarter thumbs-up!

Are you sure?

You would do this for me?

[chuckles softly]

[RICK]

Sorry, Reanette.

Don't think I'm gonna make it

to our hot springs trip.

[REANETTE]

You have my heart

all the more.

[Broughston chuckles softly]

[BROUGHSTON]

My thanks would be redundant.

We are done with words.

They have no place here.

Not now.

[screams]

[grunts]

[both groan]

[wind gushes]

[crowd clamoring]

[both groan]

[both scream]

[groans]

[RICK]

Why was I so afraid?

Today isn't about me!

Why would I run from the man

who gave me everything?

[grunts]

[groans]

[chokes]

I'm able to follow my dreams

and I can only say that

thanks to him!

If this is how

I can pay him back

then a little pain

means nothing!

[both scream]

[MIZETT]

This is getting' rough.

Alicerette.

Mind passin' some magic?

'Kay!

[MIZETT]

Hm?

Is he?

Nah, doesn't matter.

[crowd cheering]

Things sacred are not meant

to be seen by our mortal eyes.

Places sacred are not

meant to be tread upon

by our mortal legs.

Banishment is the price

of such curiosity.

Take unto thine lips

the silence of the gods

which thine eyes cannot see.

With high-level Divine Magic.

Spirited Away!

[crowd exclaiming]

[objects clattering]

Where did everyone go?

Now I'm even more hungry!

What magic was that?

What did you do with the crowd?

I just put 'em somewhere safe.

[shatters]

It'd suck if some of them

turned up dead.

What's this?

How'd we get way out here?

Who can explain this madness?

[both scream]

[thuds]

[explodes]

[Rick grunts]

[both scream]

This bout is hardly normal!

[grunts]

[grunts]

[shatters]

[Angelica screams]

[ANGELICA]

If we're counting hits landed.

Rick is unquestionably ahead!

[groans]

But look at strength per hit!

Broughston is ahead

by a large margin!

[both scream]

[screams]

[Broughston groans]

[Rick groans]

[groans]

[all gasp]

[SNAPE]

Rick is down.

[groans]

[breathes shakily]

Sheesh.

He just gets right back up?

[breathes shakily]

[panting]

[RICK]

Not done.

[pants]

Not yet.

We're not done!

Stand tall!

Let's go!

[screams]

[Broughston grunts]

[both gasp]

[groans]

[groans]

[laughs]

[screams]

[Rick groans]

[crashes]

[all gasp]

Is this some sick joke?

[RICK]

Damn it.

Am I spent?

Hey,

I did pretty well

for a nobody in his thirties.

Now I can go home and rest.

I did my best.

Broughston's gotta

be happy, right?

Hold on.

He looks like

he could still fight for hours,

but still

my body can't take more.

Can it?

Wait, my finger.

I can still move it!

It's over.

He must be out of energy.

[REANETTE] No.

Not yet.

[both gasp]

He hasn't gotten

seriously serious yet!

What she said.

[RICK]

This was nothing for him.

Just an average sparring match!

I'm not his equal.

Not if I call it here!

I haven't repaid him yet.

He deserves more.

And "more" is

what I'm going to give him!

[KELVIN]

Uh.

[ANGELICA]

What's that?

This is Mister Rick's

inborn skill.

- Time to see his Reckless Soul!

- Time to see his Reckless Soul!

[screaming]

BRUTE VALOR AWAKENED

BRUTE VALOR AWAKENED

RECKLESS SOUL

[shudders]

[laughing]

Look at his stupid face!

Broughsy finally

got his surprise!

- Ha-ha!

- Indeed.

- So, you all expected this?

- Yes.

For months

we've kept

this secret from Broughston.

We gave Ricky special training

behind his back!

Nothin' special,

but we taught him

how to control it a little,

and what needs to happen

to get those engines roaring.

[ANGELICA]

Which would be?

[REANETTE] For him to activate

Reckless Soul

there is only

one prerequisite to meet.

He must be fighting something

he cannot overcome,

and upon accepting that,

force himself

to overcome it anyway.

[MIZETT]

His skill doesn't require

a drop of magical strength

or physical strength.

Only his strength of will!

Everything up till now was

nothing but a warm-up round.

- [grunt]

- You're kidding.

[stomps]

[Broughston groans]

[BROUGHSTON]

Rick?

[roars]

[crowd clamoring]

[crashes]

I'm startin' to think that

we oughta get outta here!

Is Broughston okay?

[both scream]

[screams]

[BROUGHSTON]

Oh, I get it now.

All this time, I believed

my family's tradition of combat

was the only way

to connect with others.

But they rely on me.

Care for me!

[groans]

I have friends

who will do anything

to make my dream come true.

[grunts]

I'm not alone.

I haven't been

for a very long time.

[grunts]

[both scream]

[both breathe shakily]

[panting]

[panting]

This is it.

They've already

pushed past their limits!

It's all gonna come down

to their next hit.

[both screaming]

[thuds]

[both scream]

[wind blowing]

[ANGELICA]

Who won?

[Rick breathes shakily]

Yeah,

you've still got it.

I did as much as I could,

but I can never beat you.

[thuds]

[BROUGHSTON]

What do you mean?

I thought no one could ever

make my dream come true

and you proved me wrong.

Victory

is yours.

[thuds]

[birds chirping]

[breathes shakily]

[breathes steadily]

[sighs]

[REANETTE]

Ah, Mister Rick.

You're up.

And you're here.

[ALICRETTE] Oh.

Ricky! Morning!

[ANGELICA]

So, you didn't die after all?

Wow, was three days

a good nap, bro?

[REANETTE]

Better than the last time

you used your inborn skill.

That time,

you were out for a week.

It appears

the training has worked.

[chuckles]

Thanks,

but why is the belt with me?

Pretty sure I was the first one

to hit the ground.

No matter.

The results of one battle

mean nothing

when the w*r has

ended in your favor.

Good luck.

He's not budging on that!

When you say it so firmly,

I almost believe

it's the truth.

But I really wasn't pulling

any punches back there,

while I feel like you had

thirty full heals left to go.

I don't know if I could

ever match up to you.

Don't say such things.

You are strong.

[RICK]

Thank you.

Now, Rick.

You too, Mizett.

Huh?

[BROUGHSTON]

Alicerette, Reanette,

you have spent

so much of your time

to see my dream realized.

I thank you.

[giggles]

[chuckles softly]

I don't have the slightest clue

what you mean!

So, what's going on?

I heard from

the rest of your group

they wanted to give

Broughston a surprise,

so they gave you

some specialized training

- for your inborn skill!

- [gasps]

I knew you all seemed

a little too eager to help,

but now things are

starting to click for me!

[MIZETT] Operation successful!

[REANETTE] Quite.

[all laughing]

[BROUGHSTON]

All right.

- Let us claim our prize.

- [pops]

It popped?

Now we have Sovereign's Gold.

Two down.

Just four more to match Yamato!

And then we can succeed him

by beating Kaiser Alsapiet!

With that obtained,

I present the substitute.

[MIZETT] Alicerette should

charge it up with some magic.

Could make it look the part.

[ALICRETTE] Okay!

Just leave it to me!

Bang!

Don't know if that's ethical,

but I'm not about to snitch.

Oh yeah, about the gems.

If Reinhard used to have them,

how old is he now?

If I remember right,

The Legends of Yamato happened

over two hundred years ago.

[BROUGHSTON] I was never privy

to his exact age,

but he says his inborn skill

extends his life.

[RICK]

Interesting.

Speaking of him,

you said it's been a few years

since your last contact?

What's next?

Could he be acting in secret?

[BROUGHSTON] No.

He had a deadline

coming for his book,

so he's on the run.

Great.

[KELVIN]

What?

Once more

Misters Ashorc and Gladiatol

decline the victory.

They've subsequently canceled

their pugilist registration.

Acknowledging that,

the title of champion

falls to third place,

which would be you.

[sighs]

We can't just

end the tournament

without declaring

someone the winner.

How can you expect me

to be happy

remaining champion by default?

[SNAPE]

Won't you reconsider?

The belt needs someone

to watch over it for the year.

[KELVIN]

How is that my problem?

[SNAPE]

I knew you would do it!

[KELVIN]

I said no!

[BROUGHSTON] Thank you.

For everything.

[both crying]

Please say you'll come

back to us some day!

- And then.

- Boss!

I'm gonna work hard to live

an honest life as a pugilist!

So next time we meet,

- please let me call you my dad!

- Please let me be your wife!

- What's that?

- What'd you say?

I didn't hear either of them.

- [ANGELICA] Are you kidding me?

- Hm?

How're you gonna make it

through all those boxes?

What?

I just wanted to get some

souvenirs for our neighborhood.

Ours is the only home

in the neighborhood.

I'm sure I can find something

to do with the leftovers!

Oh yeah?

Not if you eat them here!

[BROUGHSTON]

Reinhard,

my dream has finally come true.

[ALICRETTE]

Aw,

what do you mean you're not

coming with us, Angie?

[ANGELICA]

I'm sorry, sweetie.

I have responsibilities left

to take care of back home.

You should come play!

Promise you'll visit?

- Shake, shake, shake.

- Yeah, promise I'll come by!

I'll have to since

Broughston agreed to train me.

[thuds]

[BROUGHSTON] Yes.

I look forward to it.

Wait, you mean?

You realize you're gonna die?

I would hope for nothing less.

I'm resolved

down to my very core.

Get ready,

because I'm catching up to you!

[gasps]

And then,

I plan to leave you in my dust.

[exhales]

Good.

Well then, I'm lookin' forward

to the next time we meet!

[ANGELICA]

Yeah.

So taking a "light jog" home?

[RICK] Yep! I need the workout,

since I'm only E-rank!

[ANGELICA] That almost

sounds condescending,

coming from you.

But, as you will!

So how many kilometers

will it be?

Five hundred?

Eight hundred?

Two thousand eight hundred.

At a certain point,

the number sounds

too big to be anything else

but a joke!

How long did it take you

to get here in the first place?

- [horse snorts]

- [RICK] Uh, three days?

That's ridiculous!

Even if you monsters really can

make the trip in three days,

the food will rot before

the carriage can get there!

It's nothing that can't be

fixed with a little magic!

Go Mizzy!

Leavin' it to me huh?

Here's strengthening magic.

Muscle and Lung Enhancement!

[snorts]

Shouldn't be any issue now.

I'm ready to go.

I need a break from all of you.

- Please.

- All right!

- Well, ready?

- Pardon me, Mister Rick.

What about the hot springs?

- We should plan out our date.

- [gasps]

[Angelica shudders]

Hold on, but

that was only

if I won the tournament!

You did win the tournament.

No, I passed out before you!

[Mizett chuckles]

[Rick breathes shakily]

But, I mean.

If she wants to go.

[water splashes]

Hot springs?

With her?

Don't turn around.

I don't wanna see what face

he's making right now.

I wanna go on a trip

to the hot springs too!

[Rick gasps]

[RICK]

No, we can't!

I mean.

I really don't feel like I won.

So, not yet.

Yeah, it felt more like

the match ended in a draw.

How about the two of you

race back to the castle,

consider it a tiebreaker?

Yes.

Agreed.

Wait, with what stakes?

If Rick wins, he gets to have

his hot springs trip,

but, if he loses.

[BROUGHSTON]

A hundred times the training!

But I'll die!

Please, no.

It's too much!

- I'm gonna freak out!

- Ready?

Go!

- Giddy up!

- [horse neighs]

Wait.

I wasn't ready yet!

Don't do this to me!

[gasps]

[sighs]

So, uh,

about the hot springs.

I'll take you soon, yeah?

- [chuckles softly]

- Sounds good.

[screams]

[RICK] Don't make me train

a hundred times as hard!

And with that,

I'll see you next time.

Angie!

Bye-bye!

They leave as ridiculously

as they came.

[chuckles]

[RICK] It may have taken

longer than I wish it had

but my dream of adventuring

has come true.

Still,

this isn't the end.

Even now,

my next dream is waiting.

[gasps]

[taps]

So, I started late.

Who cares?

THE OSSAN NEWBIE ADVENTURER,

TRAINED TO DEATH

BY THE MOST POWERFUL PARTY,

BECAME INVINCIBLE
