01x03 - Fit for a King

The doubles are ready to go.
They're in progress.

I'm happy that's done, but we're gonna be
juggling a couple things.

There's still so many other spaces
that need to be designed.

-Yeah.
-[April] We have to nail these king rooms.

Having the double rooms underway
is a great start,

but we still have ten king rooms to go.

The A-frame is mid-construction,
and we have to demo the restaurant.

I feel like we've finally figured out
how to make a motel business work,

but a restaurant,
like, whole other ballgame.

-Did you ever work in a restaurant?
-I had about a two-week stint.

And, not my proudest moment, but
I quit via email and never turned back.

I worked one night
for my aunt who catered,

and I didn't know the difference
between parsley and cilantro.

-I mixed them all together, so…
-No. That's a bad mistake.

That's a bad mistake. I'm pretty sure,
collectively, our most experience

-is dining at a restaurant.
-Yeah.

We need to bring in the professionals.

I think finding restaurant partners

that will let us do
the creative design piece…

into the king rooms

and start to make some progress
on the design.

Today, we are designing specifically
for romance.

[Sarah] King rooms will be for couples.

-The fun stuff again.

We really love where we landed
on the double rooms.

We want these to feel really different.

The thing that I think
makes a room pretty sexy is lighting.

-To me it's all about good mood lighting.

There's a coziness factor

that I don't think
we really focused on in the doubles.

-Right.
-So, what's the plan?

-[April] Awesome king bed.
-[Sarah] For sure.

-[April] Two statement pendants.
-[Sarah] Mood lighting.

[April] Two side tables, and then
something really visual behind the bed.

Since I have this in my hand,

do we carry through the same wallpaper

-from the double rooms into the kings?
-Yeah.

[Sarah] Maybe instead of
wallpapering the whole wall

and spending all that money, we do
just a little bit right behind the bed.

[April] Or we frame the bed so there's
panels of wallpaper

-on both sides of the bed.
-[Sarah] Right. I love the large mirror

that reflects whatever's happening here
on the other side.

-[April] And a cute little seating area.
-[Sarah] I love it.

[April] Okay, test the paint?

-[Sarah] Ready for this?

[Sarah] Oooh! It's a very pretty color.

I love it. I would paint
the whole room this color.

-This one, like, incites anger in me.
-It's pretty intense.

-That feels too pink.

[April] It can't be. like, über feminine.
Third one's the charm, maybe.

-I kind of love it.

I could try a room in that middle color.

Couples on romantic getaways
love to splurge.

So they're a really important segment
of our business.

Because we went over budget
in the doubles,

we have to lower our budget for the kings.

But we still have to nail this design.

And hopefully this paint color
will set the right tone for romance.

What do you think of the colors?

-I hate the left. The pink.
-[Sarah] Okay.

-[Dan] I think the middle one. Beachy.
-[Sarah] Okay.

-It needs to feel warm and inviting.

You wanna make sure you got space
to move around as well.

Okay, let's take a look at the bathroom.

I think the big thing is, we're really
gonna try and preserve these tiles.

Can we regrout them?

You can't regrout them
because there's not much grout there.

We can try not to wreck 'em
when we're doing other stuff.

We can clean 'em
and hope they look better.

We should focus our money in the bathrooms
on something we actually need.

The original floor tiles are
authentically retro, plus they're pink.

[Sarah] This is not a two-person tub.

Like, I'm not sure that I would
comfortably even fit in there solo.

We want a statement shower.

Romantic double shower.

April said she once broke up with a guy

'cause he wanted
to shower every morning with her.

-[April laughs]
-Wow.

Anyway, movin' on.

[April] Okay, cool. We'll do a shower.

[Sarah] Statement tile.

-[April] Colorful and fun.
-[Sarah] For sure.

[April] Something I'm really loving
is the vessel sinks.

[Sarah] Paint or tile?

[April] Maybe we can carry the tile
from the shower up the vanity wall.

[Sarah] Yeah, keep
the original light fixtures

and have some fun with art.

If the sink goes in the same spot,
the plumbing's fine.

If you move it, we'll have to
address the plumbing and shift it over.

-[Sarah] Let's put it in the same spot.
-[April] I'm okay with it.

-You get more counter space to the left.
-[Rick] Sure. Sounds good.

-Let's start tearing this thing out.
-Don't mess up the tiles.

-[Rick and Dan] We'll try our best.

Roommate life.

We found Thai food.

[Sarah] This smells great.

It's in the closest town next to Sauble.

Also, we decided that we should all wear

-matching outfits for Thai food night.
-[Courtney] Yeah.

-We didn't. That was an accident.
-[all laugh]

We settle into roommate life pretty well,
but we both have partners.

Last year I got married to Rod.

He's so supportive, but he's very private.

-He doesn't even have Instagram.
-Yeah, so weird.

I have a boyfriend named Ingo,
and we've been together for two years.

Being an entrepreneur,
a girl boss, a motelier,

it's really tough
to balance business and love.

There'll be years we'll get to invest more
into the relationships in our lives,

but this is just not one of them.

-[laughs]

There's so much happening here.
It's crazy.

We have a deadline
for the king prototype room,

and we have to stick to it
because we're already behind schedule

thanks to the rotting plumbing
in all the guest rooms.

It's not just the rooms.

This entire property needs to be
transformed if we wanna open for June.

So we really need
to start on the restaurant.

[April] Okay. The restaurant.
What do you think?

[Rick] Needs some work.

[Sarah] We're still working through
the vision for the restaurant,

but there's a few things we know we want.

We love tile,
and we haven't tiled a big floor yet.

We have to make sure
everything underneath is okay.

-Right.
-Yeah. The other thing we hate…

The ceiling. I really don't wanna keep it.

And I would also love to gain that
little bit of height that we probably have

-above the drop ceiling.
-[April] Yeah.

It can't be worse than this, right?

This isn't my first time
taking down ceiling tiles.

-Whoo-ooh!

The other thing
we need to talk about is…

We find this corner
of the restaurant really, really dark.

[Sarah] Could we put a big, wide door here
to bring in more light?

It's definitely an expensive adventure.
All in, maybe 10,000.

-It's, like, a tenth of our budget.
-Yeah.

This is the other big decision over here.

We really want
an indoor-outdoor experience.

At the motel in the County, we have
a garage door, which we've thought about.

Or something that can open really easily.

[Rick] We can put a door in.

-Everything's possible to do.
-[Sarah] Right.

Where do you wanna spend money?

Between this and the front door,
that is a clear winner.

-Now we just have to--
-Get a restaurant partner.

We were going
for, like, the salmon, terracotta color.

I like the direction, but we went too far.

It's not, like, "relaxing beach vacation."
It's, like, "Let's go to the circus."

[April] I disagree.

-We need to make a freaking decision.

-This is a clown sex color, which is--

-I don't know, and I don't wanna know.

We were talking about clowns, or we were

-We love apricot beige. Can we do that?
-[April] Right. Which is a blush.

That's a bigger conversation.

Do we go with our couple rooms
with blush walls everywhere?

Blush is the new black. It's neutral.

You tell Dan that we're painting it
another color, then.

He's gonna hate us.

[April] The whole process
is being held up right now.

I go along with most decisions,
but when I feel strongly about something,

we can't move forward with the way it is.

Does this say romantic,
sexy getaway to you guys?

This is not a bow-chicka-wow-wow color.

-[April] A what?
-Like, what is a bow-chicka-wow-wow color?

-You can picture what you want. But--
-What is a sexy color to you?

-I would say more like a blush color.

a couple's weekend away,

[April] I hope we find some real gems.

We are in the city today to source
a bed frame for the king rooms.

We know it'll be the biggest expense,

but they're gonna be
the centerpieces of the room.

And nothing says romance
like a beautiful king-size bed.

[Sarah] We're gonna have fun.

-[April] This is a cool bed.
-[Sarah] Yeah.

[April] But the style of it
isn't quite retro motel-ish.

[Sarah] So we move on.

-[April] I like this bed.
-[Sarah] Ooh.

[April] I think it's very retro,
screams motel era.

It's low.

I want something
that appeals to people of all ages.

-My parents would hate that bed.
-All right, fine.

I kind of like this.

[Sarah] I like that it has
a mix of wood and fabric.

-[April] Me too.
-I don't think it's as low as the other.

Ooh! This is nice!

[Sarah] We're going for a '70s feel,
but this bed leans more mid-century.

Mid-century furniture
is a real go-to for us.

It has a lot of rich character to it,
rich color to it. Clean lines.

Lots of natural materials in it.
It's retro, but it's timeless.

These are our romantic getaway rooms.

-To have an upholstered headboard--
-What are you suggesting?

[both laugh]

I feel like people enjoy
an upholstered headboard.

Have you ever been in a room
next to a non-upholstered headboard?

-Not that I've really investigated, but…
-It happened recently.

A loud motel neighbor. Anyway.

[both laugh]

So we are working on king bedside tables.

We're doing ten king rooms.
A bedside table on each side.

So that is 20 bedside tables.

Really expensive if were buying real ones.

So we've come up
with a little hack using some wood,

staining it to match
the furniture that we're investing in.

So these are the wood rounds that we got.
They were 20 or 30 dollars.

Once we cut them in half,
Rick will mount them to the wall.

We're looking for this warm,
try and making it look natural,

like it wasn't
the cheap hardware store wood.

This is fun and all, but very hard
to film myself while also staining,

so just gonna put this down for a bit
and get to work.

We are hyper-focused
on the king prototype room

and finding restaurant partners.

So Courtney, who's really coming
into her own as the project manager,

is overseeing the construction team's work
in the A-frame.

You called?

-You asked about blowing out the wall.
-Blowing this out.

-[Courtney] Yeah?
-That's not an easy task.

April and Sarah's vision for this A-frame
is a lobby, bar, and gift shop.

They wanna add in new windows
and a door to the back wall

to make the space bright, airy, and sunny.

Plus, it'll help connect this building
with the rest of the property.

You'll need an engineer drawing,

something that says
it's structurally safe to hold it.

We can get somebody to do that,

but, three to five thousand bucks
for somebody to do the drawings.

There's no, like… second option?

Second option is leave it the way it is.

[sighs]

Who do I need to get in here
to actually do this?

[Rick] You can have an engineer,
you can have an architect do it.

Well, my dad's an architect.
I could ask him.

Sounds like a good idea.

We kind of wanted to replicate the doors,

Maybe at a super discounted daughter rate?

Uh… We can see what we can do.

Every day there's, like, some new place
that's being hit by it.

And I just-- This is insane.

A bit scary,
what's happening in the world.

But all we can do
is keep working on this project.

Yeah.

[Sarah] It's scary,
but we need to keep moving forward.

We're opening this motel
in just under three months.

-It's crazy.
-We need The June in the County

open in a month.

This is gonna be a lot of juggling.

It's focusing,
continuing on the renovation here,

while also making sure the County,

which we totally are counting on,
is running smoothly.

We put everything on the line financially
for this project,

leveraging our first motel and our homes.

We really need a full season of revenue
from the original June Motel

to keep the business afloat.

Since we're a seasonal business,

this motel needs to be open
by the beginning of June

so we can start making back
the money that we've invested.

We have to start shifting our focus

-to the actual business side of the motel…
-Totally.

…versus just the construction side.

-It's just been money going out the door.
-Yes.

We really need reservations coming in.

We have to finish the king room
and the A-frame…

-For sure.
-…before we can even bother

launching reservations, so,

once we get pictures,
we'll put them on the website.

Ray's been busy painting
one of our king rooms.

We ended up kind of replicated what we did
in the residence kitchen.

We did the darker color
in the entrance way,

then we really embraced the apricot beige.

We loved it in the residence,
so hopefully we'll love it here too.

-It's intense, but it's warm.

So, I woke up having nightmares

about the decision
to paint the king room apricot beige.

This is our apricot beige.
It was looking so pink.

That's not the vibe that we're going for.

We didn't want them
to feel ultra-feminine,

so we stuck with the same kind of tone,
but just went down to San Carlos tan.

Beach motel,
and it's called San Carlos tan?

Now it's about asking Ray, our painter,
to paint it for a third time.

If we don't get this right,
we'll have to push back Ingo's visit,

and that's gonna cost us time and money.

But paint makes such an impact
to how the room feels,

so we've got to nail it.

I believe in you.

I've been playing around
with the layout of the restaurant.

This is what I've been up to.

We have some lounge seating over here
on the left.

We have a few barstools, not too many.

We have some tables here.

We have my imaginary banquette.

Even installed the lighting.

This is our, like, VIP table
that's gonna be amazing.

And I'm starting to see
a real restaurant form. Very exciting.

We are cautiously optimistic.

We just had a really good phone call
with potential restaurant partners.

I think they have the same vision as us.
They love Sauble Beach.

They're drawn
to the fact it is in Sauble Beach.

It's so hard to tell
whether Katie and Fred

are excited about what they're seeing

How we see this partnership
really working is us taking

the vision of what the restaurant

to fix and make it white.

Lighting is a key component
of the couples' rooms.

We chose these rattan pendants
because that loose weave

is gonna cast
a really dreamy shadow on the wall.

That adds texture and depth to the space.

-Very nice. The mood setter.

[Sarah] Shower door looks really good.

I love, like, the contrast
of this door with the blue.

we are miraculously on schedule
for Ingo's visit tomorrow

to test out the king prototype room.

We are also shaping up to be on budget.

[April] We need to figure out the details,

so that when we test the room,
it's the real experience.

[April] I love the style of the chair,
I love the shape.

It kind of looks vintage and '70s.
Rattan, so it has that bohemian feel.

I'm proud of how the space came together.

[Sarah] I think there's
all these little design touches.

But you walk into the room,
and it's sexy, romantic, beautiful,

but at the same time,
it's not taking itself too seriously.

-Bigger plant? Fill the space a bit more?
-Yeah.

I think you have nine more of those
in your future.

I'm excited for Ingo to come,
but I'm a little nervous.

There's high expectation.

I really want him to be wowed.
