01x01 - Ya Bish but Just Classy

Post by bunniefuu »

[Sara Jane h*] The utmost test of whether
you're using your knife and fork elegantly

is to cut a banana.

First, we're going to cut the head.

And then we cut the tail.

[Stephanie] Head.

There we go.

[Sara] And then you have a banana
that has neither head nor tail.

Slice the underbelly,
but only slice it skin-deep.

You don't want to slice into the body.

Okay, good.

- [Stephanie] Okay.
- [Sara] Now... Oh.

- Do I keep it in there?
- [Sara] Keep it in there. Don't pull out.

[Stephanie, chuckling] Oh.

Sara, you nasty!

[Sara] And then one fell swoop.

- And slice the top.
- [Stephanie] Okay.

- From here?
- [Sara] Yeah, follow that line.

Unpeel the banana
from the top right corner.

- Yes, very nice. Very nice, very nice.
- Ooh.

[Sara] See? It looks so much nicer now.
It's all about form and style.

Eat it from the left to the right.

[playful music]

[both giggling]

I can't wait to show the girls my skills.

The hardest thing is the beginning.

But remember, a 10,000-mile journey
began with a single step.

[Stephanie yelps and giggles]

Good job!

I need help to elevate my life.

I believe that
you are never too old to learn.

[Sara] I'm taking people
on a journey of self-discovery.

As an international etiquette teacher,
I bring out the best in people,

using the language
of good manners and etiquette.

We're gonna do eye contact again.

This time you're gonna use
some kind of smooth 007 gesture.

[Siok] Yeah, that's sexy.
That's good. That's sexy.

[laughter]

My method is based on improving
six aspects of our lives.

How to win friends and influence people.

[in Chinese] Everyone must follow
the specific dress code.

[in English] How to look good
and feel good.

We're gonna bring sexy back.

- I'm ready for that!
- All right, let's do it.

How to dress to impress.

Belts are key.

It gives you the illusion of a waist.

How to eat anything with confidence.

- Good! I'm impressed.
- I can taste the elegance.

How to get ahead at work.

You'd wear this to a business meeting?

I have.

[Sara] And how to have
more meaningful relationships.

Your mother is so lucky
to have you as a daughter.

Thank you for placing your trust in me.
That means the world.

We are going to take you
from desperate housewife

to woman boss.

Oh, that sounds amazing.

Come with me, and you'll know
what to do anywhere

with anyone in any situation.

This has been amazing.

["Too High" by Cheyenne Jolene playing]

[Stephanie] I'm Stephanie Osifo.

I'm a party girl.
When you see me, you see a party.

My alter ego is Ya Bish.

She is trouble.

She does not give a sh*t
what anybody thinks of her.

You guys don't want me to move out,

but, me, personally,
I would like to move out.

[Rita] I'm not saying, "Don't move out."

But if you're out there, you rent a house.

I don't even know what's happening.
I cannot be coming every day

to see how you going there.

- But...
- Really, it concerns me a lot.

Because you are my only daughter.

But I'm 25, remember?
You said I'm not 18 anymore.

So why are you concerned about
what I'm doing if I'm not 18 anymore?

[Stephanie] In five years, I definitely
want to be out of this house.

I want to be graduated.
I want to have my own house.

Maybe have a family, a husband, hopefully,

if Prince Charming comes along.

We can support you. We can advise you.
It's up to you to... You know?

You should take some responsibilities.
That's what you have to do.

Yes, I act like a child. I can admit that.

I need to be able to grow up

and not have my mom and my dad tell me,

"You need to do this, do that."

I'm living underneath your roof, right?

- I'm doing...
- [Rita] That's fine.

I know that's fine.
I'm doing what you guys say.

And sometimes...

You don't do what we say. Don't say that.

- [Stephanie] Okay, look.
- Come on.

- [laughs]
- No, don't bring that one in.

[Rita] I want her to be a role model.

It will be a moment I'd love.
I'm seeing my daughter and say,

"Oh, gee. This is not
the Stephanie I know before."

I do what I want. Fair enough.

I definitely want to fix my attitude.

When I talk to my friends,
I got a bit of a potty mouth.

Even the way I dress,
I'm always wearing skimpy things.

I want those things to change.

Still me, but just classy.

Don't talk about going out.
She goes out, party all the time.

She comes home very late.

- Yeah, but going out is fun. [Laughs]
- [Rita] See?

Look at that.

I'm getting to a stage
where I've done the party life.

I definitely want to work towards
just being a lady and being classy.

I need to be like,
"Steph, you want better, do better."

In order for me to grow and become
this woman I want to become,

I need to be open and willing
to try different things.

That's where I hope that,
you know, meeting Sara,

she can teach me things
and I can learn those things

and take that on to my next journey.

It's like, I'm saying bye to the old me
and hello to the new me.

[doorbell rings]

- Hi!
- Hey, Stephanie.

[Stephanie] How are you?

Mwah!

- Oh... Oh... You do the two?
- [Sara] That's right.

There's a Chinese proverb that explains
why I go to my students' homes.

To know a fish, go to the water.

To know a bird's song,
go to the mountains.

To know someone,
you should go to his or her home.

- Hello. How are you?
- I'm Sara Jane. Nice to meet you.

I am nervous, but I'm also excited
because this is something that

I've always wanted to do,
but I never knew which route to take.

[Sara] So I'm gonna ask Mama and Papa.

What kind of woman
would you like to see her become?

Responsible woman.

She's not a baby. She's 25.

I don't mind if she goes out
or she goes anywhere.

But not telling us, you know,
you get concerned, you get worried.

[laughter]

How long do you go missing for?
A couple hours?

No, sometimes a day or two.

- A day or two?!
- [Raphael] Yeah.

[all laughing]

[Sara] I'm getting the feeling
that Steph misbehaves.

Stephanie has to learn to go out,
have a good time,

but everything in moderation.

What about in terms of
how you would like Steph to look

when she walks out the door?

You need to dress in mature way.

If you look at her wardrobe,

I look at some clothes, I say,
"My God. What is this?"

- Can I look at your wardrobe?
- Yeah, you can.

- [Rita laughs]
- [Steph] Definitely look at my wardrobe.

Thing is, Mom's chucked out some clothes.

I chucked some... [laughs]

So, I'll take you to my beauty room

where all my clothes, my lashes,
my makeup, my hair.

- Wanna see my clothes?
- Yeah.

Okay.

Let me show you my favorite outfit.

Sexy mama.

And then there's an outfit my mom hates.

- Wow.
- Yeah.

Steph only has two things in her wardrobe.

Active wear or stripper wear.

So, we need to help her
find a third option.

[upbeat music playing]

[Stephanie] Oh, she's definitely shocked.
She was like,

"What is going on? Who raised you?"

"[chuckles]" Because this outfit,
go to church, girlfriend,

you need to pray for your sins, please."

This is me! The party animal.

[both laughing]

If I were a guy in a club and saw that,
I'd be like, "One-night stand."

You don't like it?

[laughs]

We could go clubbing right now.
I'm ready to go. Let's go.

Just put my things on and let's go.

Okay, let's see your room.

- This is your bedroom?
- Yeah, it's where I sleep.

- Want to look in here?
- [Sara] Yeah.

What's the...? This is the...

Whoa. Oh my God. That's vodka.

[Stephanie] I love drinking.

It's kind of like an escape
of reality for me.

- That's my baby.
- [Sara] Wow.

[Stephanie] But we'll probably use it
when we actually go out.

That will literally go
within two people, like, just shots.

Me and the girls,
we will drink till we drop,

then we go on for kick-ons after,
and then we do the same thing,

and it's three days on
and we're still partying.

So, yeah. [Laughs]

So show me Ya Bish in action.

What do you want to see?
I've got lots of videos and photos.

I want to see everything.

- Wow. Whoa, my God!
- Yeah.

- Liddy in the city with your t*tties out.
- [Sara] Yeah.

That's what I mean with t*tties out.
You gotta show your breasts, everything.

I have a question.
How will you be more elegant

if you feel you always need
to show your t*tties?

Mm. That's hard. I dunno.

I feel really good
when I have my t*ts out.

- It's the thing that made me feel pretty.
- Interesting.

When I was growing up,
like, I was bullied.

I was never like that girl
that guys had a crush on.

You said you used to be bullied.
What were you bullied for?

I had eczema on my body
that you can kind of see some scars.

I still get flare-ups.

[Sara]
I noticed on your legs and on your thighs.

Yes, but my body scars very easily.

When I was growing up,
that's how people kind of defined me,

is the girl with, you know,
sh*t skin, basically.

And... [voice breaks]
it's really hard to say that, like,

I'm beautiful and this and that
when, you know,

most people, they only see me
for what I have on my skin,

and that's why I dress a certain way

because if I show my t*ts, my a*s,
you're not gonna look at my skin.

You're not gonna be like,
"Yeah, she's this."

You look at my body, you're like,
"Oh, she's so pretty."

[sniffles]

[Sara] I could really feel her pain.

It became apparent to me that

Ya Bish is this hard exterior
she's built for herself.

It's a coping mechanism.

What we need to help her with
is to accept herself for who she is.

I'm just sick of trying to be perfect
when I'm not perfect.

Like, I just want to be me.

Hi.

Hey, Steph.

Ooh. This looks nice.

- Have a seat.
- You look really pretty.

Thank you.

I didn't know what I was walking into.
I felt I was walking into

some episode of Gossip Girl
because I see the luxurious lifestyle,

but I've never actually came
and sat there for myself.

It was great.

- Want some tea?
- Yeah, sure.

Thank you. I feel special today.

I start with afternoon tea,
not only because it's dainty and refined,

but because it's a nice way
to welcome her, break bread.

You guys cheers with tea or...? No?

Like when you take shots like,
"Cheers," and go "Ooh."

- Not really.
- No?

Not ladylike? Damn.

We absolutely do not cheer
with our British afternoon tea teacup.

I was thinking about how
we can make you more like a lady,

and one of our first lessons
can be improving your diction.

- That consists of two things.
- Yeah.

First, we'll practice
some tongue twisters.

Our first tongue twister for today.

The rain in Spain stays
mainly in the plain.

The rain in Spain...

What?

[laughs]

What?

- This is like a workout for my tongue.
- Say it with confidence.

It is a good workout for your tongue.

Steph doesn't enunciate properly,
which is fine if you're in a nightclub.

But sometimes
you have to be taken seriously,

and language is the way

The rain in Spain stays

Excellent. Now we'll move on
to the next one.

Oh, boy.

Peter Piper picked a peck
of pickled peppers.

When do you have

how Parisian women dress.

They are sexy without being slutty.

They get your attention without trying.

Parisian women have
a certain je ne sais quoi.

So, my dear, we're gonna choose
something for you to wear that is

chic décontracté,

that is elegant.

[Stephanie] It's showing skin.

This is like this much skin.

And it has a split.

A little slit can still be sexy.
I think it will look good on you.

- Should I try it on?
- Yeah.

[sighs]

[Stephanie] Sara's doing my wardrobe.

I feel like I'm scared because
I'm so used to exposing, having cleavage.

But I want to see what, you know,
she's able to transform me into.

[Sara] Ooh la la. I like.

This is very elegant.

- I love this look, to be fair.
- Good.

I feel like I could wear this anywhere.

You still feel sexy, right?

I still feel confident, yeah.

But you don't look slutty.

I mean, you know,
I can still, you know, let's see.

I have to...

- See? You can twerk it.
- [laughter]

I think today Steph is seeing
a new version of herself.

Wow!

The styling, the natural clean face,
the total look.

And she's liking it more and more
each time she looks in the mirror.

I think she looks beautiful.

Wow...

[sighs]

I'm happy.

[Sara] I'm happy you're happy.

A bit shocked, like,
I never imagined myself being natural,

hair back, covered, but still look nice.

You push yourself to do things
you've never done before.

Yeah.

Going natural with the makeup,
wearing less slutty clothing.

Looking at myself now,
I see a different person.

- I'm proud of you, girl.
- Thank you.

I hope that I can continue.

This is the journey
that I've been wanting to do.

But still being Ya Bish,
just a classy Ya Bish.

Now to the club.

Hey! Now to the club.

Now to the club!

[in Chinese] Today's last lesson is about
pronouncing foreign luxury brand names.

Pronouncing a brand name correctly

is our first step in understanding
the brand's culture and history.

My name is Siok Lian Poh.
I am 59 years old.

I believe that
you are never too old to learn.

I've signed up
for this etiquette course because

I've met some affluent people
and went to dinner with them.

Even though they are not snobbish people,
I remember thinking,

"Oh my goodness,
what are all these cutleries?"

Let's start with French names.

Before that, there are a few tips
for pronouncing French words.

If there is a "ch,"
it's pronounced as "Shh."

If the word ends with "-ier,"
it's pronounced as "e-ay."

It's like putting E and A together.

Cartier. What tips can we use here?

We have just learned it.

It's "e-ay." Everyone, repeat after me.

- E.
- E.

- A.
- A.

- E-A.
- E-A.

- Cartier.
- Cartier.

Givenchy. Joey, try pronouncing it.

Givenchy.

- Are you speaking in Mandarin?
- Givenchy.

- Siok, you try.
- Givenchy.

Don't imagine numbers,
try imagining love.

Do it elegantly.

Givenchy.

- Givenchy.
- [Sara] Okay, good.

Learning a new language isn't easy.

So, I have to take note
of my pronunciation.

In the Italian language, "C" is pronounced
the same as this word, "chi."

So how do you pronounce this brand, Joey?

Gucci.

Siok.

Gucci.

- Petrell.
- Gucci.

Did you just say "moo-jy"?

Gucci.

It's not "go-zhi."
It's "chi" as in "eating."

"Chi."

Gucci.

- Gucci.
- Yes!

You got it! One more time.

- Gucci.
- Gucci.

- Well done!
- [Joey] A round of applause.

["We Should Level Up"
by This Is Edie playing]

[Sara, in English] Steph's family,
Steph's parents are gonna come in,

and we're gonna see the new Stephanie.

Hopefully they'll like it.

- Hey, Dad.
- [Raphael] Thank you, darling.

- I love your sense of fashion.
- Thank you.

[Stephanie] Hi, guys.

[all] Ooh!

- [Raphael] That's my girl!
- [Stephanie] This is me.

- The new and improved.
- Oh my goodness!

This is very nice. Elegant.

- [Raphael] Elegant, yes.
- Very elegant.

[Rita] Oh my God. She's a different woman.
She's a different person.

Less Ya Bish and more Steph.

You make me so proud,
and I'm so proud of you.

I can't really express it,
but to see my daughter like that,

it's a pleasure.

Congratulations, darling.

- Thank you.
- I wish you all the best.

- Thank you.
- Just keep on going.

Focus on what you want to do.

- Yeah.
- We're there for you.

It makes me feel good
that I'm also pleasing myself,

but also making my parents happy as well.

She's no longer Ya Bish.

Yeah. She's now Stephanie.

Maybe after dark. No, I'm joking.

[laughing]

- Version 2.0.
- [Stephanie] Yes.

But the new me, this is an everyday thing.

It's gonna continue with me
for the rest of my life.

That's good.

Thank you.

[Stephanie]
I definitely feel the new stage coming.

I know that it's a lot to change
your life and your lifestyle,

but everything is a process.

I've already taken step one,
and now it's just to follow through.

[all cheering]

The true spirit of etiquette
is about bringing people together,

and it's all about self-improvement.

Tonight was a night of harmony.

- Let's get the party started, girls.
- Let's get the party started!

Down low.

[laughing]
