Draw, The (2025)

Post by bunniefuu »

[whimsical music]

[child laughing]

[electricity buzzing]

[intense music throbs]

[intense music continues]

[high-pitched humming

escalates]

Hi.

I'm Alec.

Love these.

Make everything

so much less...awkward.

Can I get you a drink?

I like your dress.

[sighs] Look, I'm not here

for small talk.

Oh.

Course not.

Who is?

[soft chime]

[mellow music]

[music inaudible]

With the latest upgrade, you can

change people's clothing.

Yeah. Your outfit

isn't the problem.

Well, you can also, um,

make other amendments.

[sighs] Excellent.

EYELIGHT VOICE:

Good evening, Tara.

I have made some amendments.

[mellow music]

No. Too young.

How about this?

-Taller.

-I have made those changes.

-TARA: Too old.

-Satisfied?

No. Not the nose. Smaller nose.

How does this look?

-Bit more hair.

-Sure thing.

How about now?

Saved to your favorites.

Well, hello, boy.

It's nice to finally meet you.

I must say,

I have been thinking about this,

[whispers] you...

-all day.

-Really?

I-I might say I've been

pretty excited about this too.

But work takes up

a lot of my focus,

-so it's nice to be able to--

-Yeah. I think we should

just stick to the script.

Yeah. Yeah, much better.

[mellow music continues]

"I've...been

thinking about you all day."

Does the update

change your voice?

-Yes, just head to--

TARA: Got it.

-EYELIGHT: Voice changed.

-Oh, there's a performance

-filter too--let's add that.

-Performance feature added.

[deeper voice]

Yeah. That's a new feature.

Excellent. Let's start again.

[clears throat]

Well, hello, boy.

It's nice to finally meet you.

I must say, I have been

thinking about this,

about you...

all day.

I been thinking about you

all day too.

EYELIGHT VOICE: Alec, are you

satisfied with what you see?

[Tara moaning]

[Alec breathing hard]

[heavy music plays]

[soft chime]

I'll be seeing you again.

[door opens, closes]

[heavy music continues]

EYELIGHT: Good morning, Alec.

Please connect your EyeLight.

Watch today's headlines

on your Eyeglass,

and remember,

because privacy is key,

only you will see.

HOST: And--and that is

your message now, isn't it?

That's the message

you want to get over to people

to have that life they want.

One of the uses of digitization

is now maybe to...

to start facilitating people

to live the life

they want to live

rather than the life they had.

If we look back over

decades or centuries,

society defines itself.

There's a contract between,

uh, society and the individual

about, uh, how we live

and the protection

that society affords people.

And we can reframe that and

redesign that any way we like.

I have recognized

that technology

is a way to deal with

social alienation

and to help people

become more connected.

"The Draw" is just one example

of an immersive experience

which we can all share

together.

EYELIGHT:

Welcome to the city, Alec.

That was the Prime Minister

talking exclusively to you,

and here's Perry and Mal

with the entertainment news.

PERRY: Welcome back, world.

Your girl Perry

and your guy Mal here,

your favorite hostess

of the mostess,

and today, we're here

to talk to you about

all the wonderful things

about the EyeLight upgrade!

MAL: What I found with

the new EyeLight

is that I've not only upgraded

like my life

-but also my friends.

-Oh! [laughs]

MAL: Because it's made them

more interesting and better.

Like with performance mode,

they're far more interesting

than they ever were.

So please do write in...

Hi. I'm Alec.

You must be my 1 p.m.

So you're here

for your new avatar.

If you could just stand

in the middle of the square

for me...

And I will disconnect

your EyeLight

-for a moment.

-[soft chime]

Okay. If you'd like to

look at me?

EYELIGHT: Avatar scanning.

Avatar scanning.

Avatar creation complete.

Sorry. What are you waiting on?

If you can just

keep your eyes on me.

So what happens

to the old ones then?

Uh, they are wiped

and then disposed of.

So if you now lift up

your Eyeglass,

you should be able to see

your updated image.

EYELIGHT: Welcome, Clive.

Wow. It's very sexy, yes.

-[chuckling]

-You'll see the clothes rack

next to you

is full of outfit options,

and the image station

is right behind your back.

Touch any item,

and your avatar will update.

If you want to make

any cosmetic changes,

just speak what you want

into the mirror

and the avatar creation software

will update it for you.

So everyone'll be able to see

what I look like right now?

Everyone wearing an EyeLight

will be able to see

your new avatar, yes.

So what about those

who don't wear EyeLights?

Yeah, we're--we're working on

that one.

EYELIGHT: How else

can I assist you, Clive?

I brought some of my old things

to be scanned for my library.

ALEC: Great! I'll...

have your digital library

backdated

with your new avatar and items.

[moody atmospheric music]

[soft whirring]

EYELIGHT: Avatar scanning.

Avatar scanning.

Avatar creation complete.

Sorry. If you could

just look at me.

Why are you staring at me?

Sorry,

the system's just lagging.

EYELIGHT: Welcome, Kerry.

It's pretty impressive,

isn't it?

Did you have far

to travel today?

TIM: [clears throat]

I'll be a minute.

-Alan.

-Alec.

-That's not my name.

-No, my name's Alec.

Look, we've got an issue

with you.

I-I've met all my monthly

targets already.

You take longer

than every other AC,

and we've had more complaints

recently about your--

-I'm just trying to be friendly.

-Well, friendly is not

how people have been

describing you.

We need every customer

experience

to be positive and fast.

How else are we gonna

get to 100%?

I just feel like the best way

to show off the tech

is to try and make a connection.

[scoffs] But you make people

feel uncomfortable,

or worse, offended.

Look, we can't have setbacks

on the way to 100%.

-Yep.

-Yeah?

So, stick to the script,

turn them out quick...

-Like a computer.

-Perfect.

You're a faster learner, Alan.

[softly] It's Alec.

ZANE: Mate.

Mate.

Look, if you want the respect

and you wanna be seen

as an asset, then...

you've gotta play the game.

I-I'm struggling.

I don't know how to build

a connection with the clients.

I've--

Well, I think, Alec...

you can take comfort in the fact

that it can't get any worse.

-So the only way is up.

-Mm.

And don't worry about Tim.

Just follow me

and you'll be all right.

Remember. Keep it calm,

keep it cool, keep it quick.

And if someone comes in

that you like the look of,

[whispering] just copy their

avatar to your favorites. Boom.

And listen.

When I'm running this place,

and I will, I'll hook you up.

Oh, speaking of,

Tara said that she had fun.

Said that she's keen to add you

[with accent]

to her regular rotation.

Mmm!

Thank you.

Um, I'm gonna

take those to...upload.

-Yeah.

-Will you look after my clients?

-Oh, yeah, sure.

-Thanks, buddy.

With pleasure.

-[softly] Boom!

-[warble]

Hi. Hi, what's your name?

-Kerry.

-Kerry. Lovely to meet you.

I'm Zane. Um, I actually think

this one's a bit nicer.

EYELIGHT: Scanning.

Scanning.

[quiet whirring]

Scanning.

No forbidden items detected.

Cabinet 724 unlocked.

Items ready for disposal.

[clank]

Incinerating.

Incinerating.

Sir!

You know

I'm gonna have to take that.

I'll let you off

with just a warning today,

but next time

you won't be so lucky.

You'll find the digital copy

in your EyeLight library.

[electronic warble]

EYELIGHT: Welcome home, Alec.

Here's what you missed.

HOST: Some are questioning,

with regard to the digitization

of classic pieces of art

and music,

can you explain to me

and to the public viewing today

why you took that decision?

PRIME MINISTER:

Yeah, absolutely.

Well, this broadcast

is going out digitally.

That means that you and I

are immortal.

That's never gonna go anywhere.

But there are priceless

works of art, moments in time,

that have been lost forever,

like some of the earlier, uh,

celluloid films

and actors there.

Um, digitization

simply offers us an opportunity

to protect our legacy.

If you think about it as well,

the other thing

that digitization does

is, uh, it allows transparency

and free interrogation of facts.

-All the facts--

-EYELIGHT: Alec, you have

an incoming call from Esther.

[chiming]

Answer.

So, what are you up to

tonight, my brother?

I'm just watching the news.

Me and some of the old unit

are getting together tonight.

-In town?

-Hell, no. For "The Draw."

I'm thinking,

with our combat experience,

they might as well

just give us the money now.

Do you think that's a good idea?

It's just a game.

Even you could join us.

I don't know the rules.

Well, just come and watch then.

You could do with

some interaction.

Plus, I hear the EyeLight

integration they're using

is pretty impressive.

All right.

Amazin'.

I'll send you the invite.

Oh, and, um, Alec...

-Mm-hmm?

-Have you got a 20

for the entry fee?

-See it as an investment?

-What, like the other ones?

-I can--I can ask someone else.

-I'll send it over.

Brother, I love you.

Half-brother.

Ooh!

[chuckles]

EYELIGHT:

Welcome to "The Draw," Alec.

Thank you for choosing to watch.

Want to win the jackpot?

Why not be a player next time?

The Hunters

are on the second clue.

ESTHER: Look, Terry,

I can't see anyone.

-Are you sure they're here?

-Mate, they're definitely here.

There's another team,

north side.

ESTHER: Okay. Stat! Hold on,

I'm coming, I'm coming.

HUNTER: We're coming.

We're coming to you.

-Around the corner.

-ESTHER: Hold on, I'm coming.

-I'm coming!

-[running footsteps]

[quiet, dreamy music]

[click, snap]

[stirring music swells]

EYELIGHT: You have been

eliminated from the game.

-ESTHER: Terry, you bellend!

-Better luck next time.

TERRY: Mate, they just jumped

out--what was I meant to do?

ESTHER: I cannot believe

they've beat us.

-[chime]

-EYELIGHT: Welcome, Alec.

-Here's what's been happening.

-MAL: So I finally watched

-"The Draw" last night.

-PERRY: Oh, my gosh!

-MAL: I know--okay--

-Why did you not tell me?

MAL: I get all the hype now.

I was absolutely gripped.

Could you just explain how...

how the whole "Draw" runs?

Well, firstly,

where have you been?

Um, but secondly, of course.

Of course!

So obviously,

when "The Draw" begins,

the timer starts,

and you have eight hours

to survive this, right?

A target will be chosen,

and that person then

has to basically survive

those eight hours.

And then the Hunters have

eight hours to find them.

It will start off

at the first clue

which is basically

to their general location,

where they are--that's when

we find like what the arena is

and like, you know, in the city

or is it down at the beach?

Or, like, that's kinda when

we find that clue.

And then people start

looking and searching.

Then if they survive,

second clue comes up

where we find out about

what they do, who they are,

like where they work,

so it will obviously eliminate

loads of other people.

If they survive again,

by the end of the day,

the third clue is given.

Now, this is where

the detailed clue is given

on what they look like,

and that's when the fun begins

because the k*ll Zone

also gets alerted.

MAL: What's just to stop people

just going all g*ns blazing

-and k*lling everybody?

-Fair question.

Because if you were to

just to go all g*ns blazing

and you sh**t the wrong person,

you get eliminated

from the game.

-Ah. Yeah.

-Also, you win nothing.

And we all want to win,

everybody.

Can you hear me? Say yes!

ZANE: Were you dead last night?

I was busy.

Oh!

Anyone I know?

Dee dee dee dee?

Well, while you were busy

last night,

EyeLights became free

for everyone.

So supply's gonna have to

support demand,

which means...

more ACs.

And who better to show them

the ropes than this guy?

-I told you.

-TIM: Can I have everyone's

-attention, please?

-Play the game.

You eat enough sh*t

and you get the rewards

in the end.

TIM: Can I have everyone's

attention, please?

Oh, hold tight.

Quimathy's about to monologue.

Right, everyone, so,

as you'll no doubt expect

after the announcement,

there are some changes.

But first of all,

we do have some new

staff members joining us

to help with demand.

Secondly, "Draw" points

can now be used for upgrades,

so please make sure and scan

their EyeLights properly.

Also, get all physical photos

to the upload team

as quickly as possible

as carrying nondigital images

now comes with

a prison sentence.

Seems a bit excessive,

does it not?

Yes, it's interesting that you

should be saying that, Brian,

considering how many items

you've been stealing

from customers.

EyeLights cannot manipulate

analog images.

We need you to be

aligned with us

as we strive for the 100%.

There will be no exceptions.

Now, all this means

that we need to be quick

with our clients.

Your customer approval ratings

are everything

as we look to evaluate

who's ready for promotion.

And currently top of the

customer approval ratings is...

Zane.

Right. That's it, everyone.

-[mouthing]

-We open in 15 minutes,

so to your stations.

Sorry, uh,

you're not on the list.

Oh? There's been a mix-up

at HQ.

-[chime]

-Identification validated.

There's my details.

TIM: Perfect.

Well, welcome, Jade.

Welcome, indeed.

-[warble]

-Boom.

-Hi, Jade.

-JADE: Hi.

Zane.

What can we do about her--

her hair?

We can make almost any changes

to appearance.

Good. How long will that take?

-Should take about 30 minutes.

-Perfect.

And I'll be back then

to make some tweaks.

-Samantha, step forward.

-[Jade inaudible]

Hi. I'm Alec.

EYELIGHT: Avatar scanning.

[quiet whirring]

We do have other options.

Which do you like?

[Zane and Jade whispering]

-Done.

-Avatar creation complete.

-Thank you.

-Welcome, Faye.

[slow footsteps]

Yeah, if you'd like to just

step into the square for me.

They make the perfect couple,

don't you think?

JADE: You like staring,

don't you?

Excuse me?

If you don't wanna end up

like...you need to be better.

-At staring?

-At hiding.

I don't have anything to hide.

We're all hiding...

Alec.

Just...don't let them see.

[paper rustles]

Yeah, I've got a couple of

things to take over to upload.

That's better, Alan.

HOST: How do you justify

removing benefits from people?

Where's the benefit in that

for those people?

PRIME MINISTER:

Previously, uh, an individual

was given money to do with

as they wished,

to support whatever situation

they were in.

And how far did that

actually get us?

Did that actually

solve the problem?

I think we both know

the answer to that, because

-the problem didn't go away.

-

EYELIGHT: Alec, you have

one new message from Tara.

PRIME MINISTER: ...is that

we will move you into

an urban accommodation...

TARA: Hello, boy.

Are you free tonight?

PRIME MINSTER: And you will be

able to freely engage with--

through the technologies--

with the experience

that we have decided

collectively to engage in.

HOST: And now you're offering--

PRIME MINISTER:

Does that really sound so bad?

[edgy music]

Oh, that's a 35mm!

I haven't heard the sound

for ages.

Thank you.

[camera lens snaps]

[chiming]

EYELIGHT: Good morning, Alec.

You have one new message

from Esther.

Play message.

ESTHER: Uh, Alec!

We were so close last night.

I was just feet away

from earning the K-Zone.

Anyway,

I'll meet you for lunch.

I need to ask you for a favor.

Eh.

Alec, please connect

your EyeLight

to see today's updates.

-[chime]

-Welcome, Alec.

Here's what's been happening.

PERRY: We're here to talk about,

well,

what the rest of the world

is talking about--"The Draw."

-MAL: Whoo-whoo!

-Let me hear it!

No, no, no, wait,

wait a minute, wait a minute!

No, there must have been

some sort of mix-up here!

I mean--I mean,

I can find another job.

-Plus, there's income support.

-Not anymore.

I still don't understand

why you're evicting me!

OFFICER: Sir, you're in

possession of ill*gal items,

which results

in immediate relocation.

BRIAN: Well...

where are you taking me?

OFFICER: To a new

purpose built facility.

-Thank you.

-Yeah, I wouldn't thank me.

Why?

Ugh.

I've put some money

into your account.

What?

Well, I'm guessing they've

stopped your ex-service support

and that's why

you wanted lunch.

Honestly,

we were so close last night.

-It's only a matter of time--

-Esther, it's fine.

It's fine.

I'm supposed to be

looking after you.

You're the one

with the social problems.

-If Dad was here, he--

-Yeah, Dad's not here.

Yeah, but you know

what he'd say if he was.

[imitating Dad] "In this world,

takes heart to have hope."

[chuckling]

Why do you never

iron your clothes?

Maybe this is my avatar

and it's how I want

the world to see me.

Yeah?

Now you definitely

sound like Dad.

Uh, I've gotta get back.

-See ya.

-All right.

Hey, Alec.

You free tonight?

They've upped the cash prize

for "The Draw."

No, I'm busy.

Yeah. And I'm a reliable adult.

Hey, there's still time.

[softly] Yeah.

You're, uh, you're not

wearing your EyeLight.

Yeah, sorry.

I left it at my station.

You have to wear your EyeLight

at all times.

And it says here you weren't

connected at all last night.

Didn't realize

it was that important.

We're all important, Alan.

Which is why we need to know

where you are at all times.

We don't wanna have a problem

like we did with Brian, do we?

I'd like to know

where she's at at all times,

if you know what I mean.

You know...

with a few tricks,

you can log into EyeLight feeds.

So when I land...[clicks tongue]

[whispers]

you can see the action.

-I've got a client.

-Actually, mate, you don't.

There's been a few comments,

-so we're sending you to upload.

-Eh?

Yeah, Tim's being a bit

of a d*ck, but don't worry.

You can scan these for me

and upload.

And before you say it...

you're welcome.

EYELIGHT: Text scanning.

Text scanning.

Due to rule 81, text redacted.

PATRICIA: Hello, dear.

GEORGE: Are you okay?

Yeah, sorry, um,

there's usually only one person

-in the square.

-Oh, we can go one at a time,

if that's better.

No, no, that's fine.

I can do you both together.

Do you wanna stand a little

closer to each other, please?

-Oh, with pleasure.

-[both chuckling]

Right, uh, now what do we do?

Yeah, so if you

turn on your EyeLights?

We don't have one.

Oh, if it's free,

we'll have one.

-We'll have two.

-Yeah. Ha.

-GEORGE: Oh!

-Thank you. Thank you.

What do we do with these?

So, if you lift it up

to your temple,

it should just attach.

-That's right.

-Like that?

[chime]

-Ohh!

-That's you, causing trouble.

Oh, that makes a change,

doesn't it?

-There you go.

-Whoa!

-PATRICIA: It's so exciting!

-[George laughs]

And now you can change

your outfit

by selecting clothes

on the rail.

-Thank you, kind sir.

-Welcome, Patricia.

GEORGE: Go on, then!

Look at all this.

-PATRICIA: It's amazing!

-Welcome, George.

-GEORGE: Goodness me!

-Can we just choose?

-Choose--or choose...

-How can I assist you further?

-PATRICIA: That's nice.

-GEORGE: [laughing]

[chatter, laughter continues]

Ah, thank you so much.

My wife and I have had...

-[buzzer]

-...a smashing time.

EYELIGHT: Please refrain

from using expired language.

So, madam, can I just remind you

that under the law,

marriage is forbidden,

so any mention of--

Not for those with a permit.

Jade, could you check this,

please?

They still allow us

a physical permit.

Looks good to me.

-That's great. Thanks.

-Thank you.

-Is there anything else?

-Okay, sir, madam, nonetheless,

we would prefer if you

didn't mention it in store.

I'll let you off

with a warning this time.

-GEORGE: Okay, okay, okay.

-Don't worry.

-We know the rules.

-GEORGE: [laughs]

Sorry. We do have to ask.

GEORGE: Don't worry about it.

Thanks very much, bonny lad.

You've been really good.

We thoroughly enjoyed

ourselves, haven't we?

We have. It's been lovely.

-GEORGE: Bye-bye.

-Bye.

Makes you feel icky inside,

doesn't it?

I need a favor.

I need to update my avatar.

You got a free slot tomorrow?

-I think Zane's free.

-I'm sure he is.

But what if I wanted

someone who's more...

Precise?

Zane has the best sales record.

So you give everything to Zane?

I understand. He's useful.

You only have friends

that are useful?

Anything that helps

fill the bank balance.

So you're thinking about

entering "The Draw" then?

And you're not?

I don't like playing

other people's games.

So heroic.

How's that working out for you?

How is it working out for you?

Do you ever just answer

a question?

That's why you have

all these problems.

I don't have any problems. I'm--

Weird. And annoying.

I'm just trying to connect.

I'm just trying to connect.

In this world, that's a good way

to get yourself k*lled.

-You should just--

-What?

Be more like you?

Hmm.

Forget it.

I'll ask someone else.

4:30?

I can fit you in at 4:30.

4:30 then.

PRIME MINISTER: I challenge you

on whether it's actually a game.

Uh, I believe it's now becoming

part of our social fabric,

only it's becoming an immersive

collective experience.

HOST: Prime Minister,

there's no questioning

that "The Draw" has become

something amazing.

Why do you think it's become

what it has become?

Evidence supports the fact

that it adds meaning

and it adds purpose

to those individuals.

[edgy music]

HUNTER: Well, well.

Fancy seeing you here.

Hello again.

How are you getting on

with your new avatar?

I love it.

I'm noticing with it

new opportunities

are presenting themselves to me

every day.

Do you know they're offering

monetary rewards

to report lawbreakers?

Good.

I'm pleased

they're cracking down.

Well, I'm pleased

you're enjoying your new avatar,

and, uh, I will

report back to my manager.

You do that.

-Good night.

-Bye-bye then.

[footsteps approach]

ESTHER: I'm so sorry.

Let's get you inside.

-ALEC: Lights.

-Welcome home, Alec.

Welcome, Esther.

[running water]

Don't give me that look.

I told you not to play.

What choice do I have, Alec?

And how did you afford

the drink?

ESTHER: [sighs] I'm sorry.

[chime]

[warble]

It's not supposed to

be like this, is it?

Come.

See?

Just like Dad.

I'm not like Dad.

You know what'll happen

if they catch you with that.

-They won't.

-That's what Dad used to say.

I'll put your rent in tomorrow.

Esther.

[click]

Thanks, bruv.

-

-Good morning, Alec.

You have one mandatory message.

You have one new

mandatory message.

Mandatory message:

your rent is increasing.

Your rent is increasing by 20%.

Please connect your EyeLight

to see details.

Avatar scanning.

-Can you add fire to my eyes?

-Scanning.

When people see me,

they're gonna be inspired.

-Scanning.

-Mate, I just want my hair back.

-I'm ready.

-Yeah. If you could stand

in the middle

of the square, then, for me.

Please.

-Avatar scanning.

-[whirring]

Avatar creation complete.

Uh...no.

You usually take

a lot longer than that.

Avatar creation complete.

I guess I decide

people are worth the time.

Oh. Right.

And how do you decide that?

I look for their tells.

And what are my tells?

I can't see them.

Okay.

I guess I'll just stick

with what I've got then.

Here.

I can't see them here.

[paper rustles softly]

You can finish this

at my station, Jade.

I'm good.

I think I'm done.

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

Nothing personal, mate, but,

I will have her.

ALEC: I'm not interested.

ZANE: Sure, you're not.

You're late.

It's 5 a.m.

You're lucky I'm here.

This isn't where

you m*rder people, is it?

ALEC: [laughs]

Maybe.

So...

am I worth the time, Alec?

What are you doing?

I'm currently

sitting on a bench with you.

I mean with me.

With Zane.

What's my use to you?

I just don't understand

what game you're playing.

It's funny.

What you call a game...

I see as survival.

I suck up to useful people

because I've seen what happens

if you don't.

I'm not playing a game with you.

You're not?

Why not?

[camera lens snaps]

They'll k*ll you

for having that camera.

Maybe not having a camera

would k*ll me.

I think you're gonna

ruin my plans.

Zane's watching

your EyeLight feed.

I just thought you should know.

[chime]

Zane only sees

what I want him to see.

[chime]

Why do you feel

that the EyeLight

is such an enhancement

to "The Draw"?

What the EyeLight

has done for us is--is...

one, it's allowed for

a much more immersive experience

on the part of the user,

the actual player in the game.

And we'll just disconnect

your old EyeLight.

-[chime]

-PRIME MINISTER: Um...

our ability

to upgrade the game,

upgrade the experience

and improve the experience

both for the participants

and for the watcher will go up,

and the speed at which

we can implement those changes

will go up as well.

EYELIGHT: EyeLight paired.

[chime]

[tense, punchy music]

[chime]

-[applause]

-Thank you, thank you,

thank you.

Oh. Bye, Tim.

Aw...Tim.

So, as your new manager...

No, please, stop it.

But seriously,

as your new manager,

I am keen to keep

the momentum going.

Now, I've been informed

that we're due a lot of changes

that is gonna require

the utmost secrecy from us all

including some really

interesting integration

with "The Draw."

Therefore, from today,

all EyeLight staff will have

their outside activity

monitored and logged.

It's a sacrifice, I know,

but the world we live in

is changing rapidly,

and how exciting that we are

on the front line, hey?

What, so even when

we're in the toilet?

Anytime your EyeLight

is off from now on

will be considered a breach

of your employment contract.

And with costs rising,

I'm sure job security's

your highest priority, Jeff.

Yeah? Good.

So, keep it calm,

keep it cool, keep it what?

-Quick.

-Quick.

Some of you more than others.

So let's power through

these numbers, people. Come on.

Alec, a word.

There are still multiple gaps

in your EyeLight diary.

Most nights

you're not even connected.

What are you doing?

Dreaming?

[huffs] Okay.

I get it.

But there's only so much

covering that I can do.

I need you to toe the line.

Do it for me.

Well, you changed your plans

last night.

No, I didn't. I just...

I really got into "The Draw."

Oh, good to know.

I can check now.

Well, I better put on

a nice show for you then.

Oh! [laughs] Feisty.

I was...thinking about

going for a walk this weekend.

Interesting. Anywhere I'd know?

Maybe.

Have you ever been to the beach?

That's forbidden.

There's nothing

and nobody there.

Exactly.

Good luck getting past

those checkpoints.

Apparently, there is a way.

If you can be in two places

at once.

So there's having fun

and there's stupidity.

Well, why did you come then?

Okay. But we can't go too far.

Gotta stay connected.

Well, we won't.

[chime]

I've never been here before.

It's...

it's really something.

Yeah.

It's a different world.

So...

Why do you take pictures?

Same reason you draw, I suppose.

No, I draw 'cause it's useful.

-How so?

-For forging.

For forging digital documents.

How else do you think I got

my avatar qualification?

No way.

-No way. Mine took me years.

-[laughs] That's a shame.

Mine took me a week.

Ah. I don't think

I wanted to know that.

JADE: [laughs]

You'd be amazed how easy it is

to get what you want.

Get the right outfit

and just...

walk confidently into a room.

Well, I should report you.

Yeah.

You should.

-You know, my dad used to draw.

-Oh, yeah?

Yeah. He had this...

Expression. Motto.

"Takes heart to have hope."

That's cute.

Shame it's bullshit.

It wasn't to him.

My dad's life was...sh*t.

But he painted it.

He painted it.

They're still doing patrols

around here.

We should go.

What do you think is happening?

I don't wanna know.

I wonder if there's anybody

over there.

Alec, stop.

Don't even think about it.

Alec.

Alec!

[emotional, sweeping music]

[chime]

We should get back.

[chime]

And I've got to go

and see Zane.

Oy, you. Come here.

Stand down, officers.

This one's with me.

-How did you know?

-Because when I went to yours

and you weren't there, I knew

you'd be doing something stupid.

You have it on you, don't you?

[huffs] Alec!

You've gotta be more careful.

Why are you dressed like that?

They've called us back up.

All ex-military

are now back in service.

They're posting us

to foot all evacuated areas,

and that is why they're manning

the checkpoints now.

-What, in your condition?

-Oh, so now it's a condition?

Why have they done this?

Why do you think, Alec?

Esther, you can't.

-What choice do I have?

-I have money.

I have orders.

There.

Finally got you home.

Let me know when you're safe.

They're blocking

all communication, so...

[Esther clears throat]

-You remember what Dad says.

-I will.

It's me that has to

remind you, remember?

[dark, heavy music pulses]

HOST: The question

I do have to ask you is

this relocation of people, um,

seems to be moving very swiftly.

Could you just explain to me

why you're moving

so swiftly on this?

PRIME MINISTER:

No, absolutely. Um...

We want to ensure

that everyone can benefit

from the changes

that we're bringing to society

and can engage fully

with the technology, uh,

and therefore get the most

out of the experience

that we have to offer.

The only way we can do that

is if we have

physical proximity, uh...

HOST: So there seems to be

no choice.

People are being told

they're being relocated.

[stirring music swells]

So, as you can see,

the new model is embedded

deep into the side

of the temple,

but not too deep,

so don't worry.

But deep enough to allow

seamless projection.

And if two of you or more

have the EyeLight 2.0,

then you no longer need

an Eyeglass.

And you lucky lot will be

getting yours early

in the next few weeks.

So let's keep it CCQ, people.

Hey.

Do you think

I'd look good in this?

I think you'd look good

in anything.

How 'bout...

This?

Well, maybe not anything.

I cannot believe that they've

left all this stuff here.

Why haven't they removed it?

They don't care about

broken things.

See? Got rid of anything

valuable.

Let's get it.

-But it's broken.

-For now.

Where did you learn to do this?

Where I'm from, you get used to

fixing broken things.

Okay. Ready?

[projector whirring]

[stirring music]

We should find

a different film next week.

-If we get through next week.

-Alec.

Once they put those things

in our heads, it's over.

That's why we need to make

the most of now.

I can't.

With you.

You can't?

I have enough meaningless

things in my life.

I don't need any more.

Wow.

That makes me feel special.

[sighs]

So what did you expect

from this, then?

I just thought we were,

you know,

helping each other

get through this.

Maybe we can have

a bit of fun...

I don't want to get

through this.

Alec, just come and sit down.

Just watch the--

watch the film again.

There must be a way

that we don't have to hide.

Alec, we cannot live

in your delusions!

This...

this is the delusion.

These moments were real.

I don't see why

we can't have our own.

Absolutely gripped

the whole time.

-Right?

-When she was hiding...

-Oh, my God!

-...and you could see everybody

circling and circling

and circling...

-PERRY: I know!

-...but not finding her.

[chime]

VICAR:

Please take each other's hands.

Marriage is a full

and voluntary commitment

to the exclusion of all others

and entered into

in hope and desire

that it is for life.

With the authority

vested in me,

I pronounce you

husband and wife.

You may kiss the bride.

JADE: So what did you think

of that film?

Yeah, that one was my favorite.

[both chuckling]

So, mister,

now that you have me

all to yourself,

what happens next?

I think we need to go

on honeymoon.

Oh, yeah?

Where are you gonna take me?

Well, the island

over from the beach, obviously.

Yeah, of course you are.

Ooh! What about

wedding presents?

What ya want?

Well, I'd love an enlarger.

I would like you

to have an enlarger too.

Yeah. Good idea.

Well, I meant a photo enlarger.

I don't know what

you were thinking about.

No, I'd like to see them

developed.

Well, that's the problem

with film.

You have no idea

if they're any good or not.

That's the mystery.

We forgot wedding speeches.

Oh, well...

Is this thing on?

[whispers] One, two.

Even in the darkest days...

in a world full of

wicked people,

wicked ways...

from the moment

you caught my gaze...

I knew you'd have my heart.

Always.

[chime]

Oh. It's Zane.

You know, even though

it was just pretend...

it was nice to know what

it would have felt like.

You do know

it was just pretend, right?

[echoing] VICAR: Please take

each other's hands.

Marriage is a full

voluntary commitment.

JADE: It's nice to know

what it would have felt like.

VICAR: And entered into

with hope and desire

that it is for life.

JADE: You know, even though

it was just pretend...

VICAR: With the authority

vested in me,

I pronounce you

husband and wife.

You may kiss the bride.

JADE: You do know

it was just pretend, right?

Well, hello, boy.

[both chuckle]

I'm so glad

that you messaged me.

And here you are.

[small laugh]

Someone's trained you well.

Thanks.

As a reward, I'm gonna bring

forward your EyeLight upgrade.

Thanks.

-But I'm happy to wait.

-Oh, no, no, no.

-I insist.

-I would really appreciate

-a bit more time.

-Told you if you follow me,

I'll look after you.

-ALEC: I just--

-Alec.

I need you to toe the line.

So, I've booked you in

for tomorrow.

Zane.

-I need to tell you something.

-What? Need a break?

Last night's post "Draw"

activities wear you out?

-I can't see you anymore.

-What?

Why?

What, to him?

This isn't possible.

I'll show this to HQ.

You could.

But tell me...

How's that stolen

avatar collection of yours?

ZANE: [exhales] Oh.

You sure you wanna do this?

Yeah.

I am.

Well...

So what else can you forge?

Mm, qualifications,

travel permits, IDs.

-Military?

-Sure.

Huh.

What about uniforms?

-Got a couple.

-[laughs]

-[both laughing]

-I didn't wanna--

I didn't wanna know that.

And Zane?

We shouldn't be worried

he's gonna report us?

No. He won't wanna risk

the promotion.

So why did you forge

our license?

EYELIGHT: Alec, please look

at your Eyeglass.

MAL: Everyone,

we have breaking news.

PERRY: So exciting. Oh, my gosh!

MAL: "The Draw" is now

taking it to the next level.

PERRY: Next level!

Like totally next level.

MAL: We've gone from virtual

reality to--wait for it--

-reality.

-Mortal combat.

You can actually die now

in "The Draw."

This is so exciting.

This isn't happening

for pretend anymore.

-Oh, my goodness!

-This is real life!

-I know!

-But our constants have changed,

-haven't they?

-Yes, they have.

It's the ex-military

and unemployed

that compete

in these contests.

MAL: And these arenas

are in very specific locations

where we've had evacuations,

so it's a rejuvenation project

as well.

Jeff.

I told you

good things were coming.

Uh, we use the military.

There is a combative element

to the game.

So it makes absolute sense

to use people

whose skill set, uh, can be

deployed to great effect there.

Um, as to the unemployed, well,

this is an opportunity

to provide purpose

to those who have none.

ZANE: And as we celebrate

our new reality show

based on "The Draw,"

we've made some updates to

the online game version as well

so you get a real sense

of the danger.

But don't worry.

They're just controllers.

But they do tickle a little

if you get hit.

-[fires]

-Boom! Ha ha ha ha!

See? It works great.

[door opens]

[chime]

Did you clear your head?

[exhales]

I'm out of film.

[chime]

ZANE: A promotion's come up,

so...

are you ready to come back

and rejoin the inner circle?

I thought I already was part

of the inner circle.

You can't play yourself

out of this one.

You'll be protected,

and if you say no...

the more I have to

investigate things.

And I don't think

we want that...do we?

And before you retort...

I've deleted all those avatars.

-What about Alec?

-[scoffs]

It's you that we want, Jade.

If I say yes...

...then you don't force Alec

to get the upgrade.

We all have to get the upgrade.

There's no choice in the matter.

I thought you were

all-powerful, Zane.

Okay.

I'll find a way to take him

off the upgrade list.

Deal?

Deal.

Good.

I've put you in for tomorrow.

I'm really looking forward

to working together again.

Toodle-oo.

How do we get to the island?

I can't.

I've gotta be here for Esther.

Yeah, you do.

[intense rhythmic music pulses]

[chime]

[rhythmic music escalates]

-ALEC: You left early.

-I got called into HQ.

No sign of Esther yet.

Where's your--

What have you done?

I didn't have a choice.

-We always have a choice.

-Some of us don't.

Alec.

Alec!

Good night.

Night.

[exhales shakily]

EYELIGHT: Update complete.

Hello, Jade. I am your new

EyeLight assistant.

Is there anything

I can help you with today?

No, I'm good, thank you.

Have you ever thought about

changing your hair color?

-No, not really.

-Blond, perhaps.

Shall we try it?

I have made

some additional changes.

Do you like it?

The EyeLight picked it.

Do you like it?

Hmm.

Yeah.

Jade, I have noticed

a change in your pulse.

This is normally associated

with a lower mood.

Would you like me to add

a happiness enhancement?

Sure.

[chime]

Oh. We should go around.

-JADE: Why?

-Oh...

What do you see?

I see only you.

[chime]

Alec, to avoid being reported,

please reconnect your EyeLight.

Jade.

Yes, honey.

How do I wake you?

However you like, darling.

Why did you put money

into my account?

I received it after entering.

-Entering?

-To "The Draw."

-No.

-Anyone can play now.

And they pay you for it.

They've expanded it to the city,

which means

Esther's coming home.

ALEC: Play "Draw" headlines.

So "The Draw"--wait for it--

can now be played anywhere

by anyone. So good!

MAL: It's what we've been

saying all along.

-I don't believe this.

-PERRY: I know, it's like

they were listening to us, Mal!

-Eyeglass off.

-[sound stops]

I knew you'd be proud.

Thank you for supporting me.

I didn't say that!

Thank you for sacrificing

so much for us.

Should we head to work, darling?

Yeah. Let's go to work.

Jade, listen to me. Stop!

EYELIGHT: You are currently

interrupting Jade's reality.

-Please step aside.

-Jade, listen to me.

Listen to me. Can you hear me?

EYELIGHT: We estimate

the nearest officers

-are two minutes away.

-Well, call them!

-Jade, this is insane!

-My user's speech software

will resume when she's

no longer in physical danger.

Listen to me.

Jade, you need to wake up.

Darling...

let's buy us a bigger house.

Oh, babe,

That would be wonderful.

The technology works so well!

-See? Look at that!

-Player eliminated.

Direct k*ll message

to the brain--boom.

Beautiful. No clean-up.

Ah-ah!

You need to get with the program

like Jade.

Jade? Have you seen

the state of her?

Have you seen the state

of all of them?

Oh, yeah, raise your voice

as much as you like,

but unless I decide,

nobody can see you.

How am I supposed to do my job,

Zane, if nobody can see me?

Ah, yes. About that.

I'm afraid,

due to your noncompliance,

we're gonna have to

terminate your contract.

-You can't do that.

-Actually, I can.

Don't worry.

I'll look after her.

-Take him away.

-Jade, I'm gonna come for you!

I'm gonna come to your

apartment!

Which is where? See, you never

did get very far, did you?

All the best

on your next venture.

Toodle-oo.

-ALEC: Call Jade.

-Call declined.

-Call Jade.

-Call declined.

-Call Jade.

-Alec, this user

is no longer available to you.

Alec, your bank balance

is too low

to cover your rent payments.

Earn extra money

by playing in "The Draw."

Late payments

can result in relocation.

Alec, did you know tomorrow's

"Draw" grand prize

-is 10 million?

-Fine. Enter.

Congratulations, Alec.

You have now entered "The Draw."

Alec, you have

one new mandatory message.

[chime]

ZANE: Hey, Alec. Listen, mate,

no hard feelings and all.

But I did say

that I would look after you,

and I have.

I've got your next role

for you.

You're welcome, and good luck.

Boom!

-Delete.

-PERRY: Alec Michael Turner,

you are tomorrow's target

for "The Draw"!

So exciting! Congratulations!

MAL: Don't worry.

We won't tell anybody.

EYELIGHT: EyeLight securing.

EyeLight securing.

-Your EyeLight is secure.

-[chime]

[intense percussive music]

EYELIGHT: Welcome, everyone

to today's round of "The Draw."

The timer has started

for our target,

and if they can survive

until 5 p.m. this evening,

the prize of 10 million

will be theirs.

Let's begin.

So, guys, as you know,

the timer has started,

and we will be with you

throughout the entire day

to like figure out

what's gonna happen.

-We are so excited.

-MAL: We're gonna be

live streaming and giving you

guys a firsthand account

as we watch this all together.

-It's gonna be so good.

-PERRY: Send us, text us,

tell us who you think

it's gonna be.

Tell us where you think

it's gonna be.

MAL: Well, we already know that

'cause our first clue

has gone out.

-PERRY: True.

-And we're in a city!

PERRY: Oh, my gosh,

you've been saying

you wanted it to be somewhere

exciting, right?

Like, this is really cool,

right?

MAL: Well, suddenly,

you've got a lot more people,

you've got bigger buildings.

We've got transport and cars

and other things like that

-which is gonna be crazy.

-PERRY: I know!

'Cause you never

had that before!

MAL: Now we've got sewers.

We've got so many places

-that this person can hide.

-Where do you think

they're gonna hide, guys?

Like, I don't know.

Like, there's actually

so many more opportunities

I feel like,

and people can hide

like genuinely like

in the crowds, like if...

You don't work here anymore.

Plus, I think you need to hide.

I'm not hiding.

You need to leave.

I'm not going anywhere.

What's the matter, Zane?

I thought they couldn't see me.

I can't override the game, Alec.

I'll have you escorted out

again.

But that would draw attention...

and we are right in the middle

of the k*ll Zone.

Alec,

you being here is putting us

all in danger.

Then you better reveal me.

You know I can't.

They'll send a k*ll shot

to my EyeLight immediately.

Then leave me to do my job...

mate.

EYELIGHT: And here is

the second clue.

If I have a date

with a potential mate,

I might head to this shop

where they could give

my look or hair a chop.

MAL: So we're now at

the halfway point

-and the target's still alive!

-Yeah, I know! How crazy.

MAL: They're doing

very, very well, so...

PERRY: Very, very well.

Do you think they are

going to survive for the third

and final clue?

Do you think we'll even hear

the third and final clue?

-I don't even know.

-MAL: I don't know.

The second clue, to me,

was quite obvious.

I think if you really

thought about it,

you'd be able to find them

with that.

Uh, can...

can I help you at all?

Yeah. I wanna update my look.

ALEC: Certainly, sir.

What would you like to change?

Would you like to

step into the square?

It's okay.

I'll come back later.

EYELIGHT: There are

30 minutes remaining.

Here is our third

and final clue.

A bearded guy

with bags under the eye

and one is about medium high.

So we can confirm

the third clue

-has been released.

-Oh, my gosh, I am literally--

My pulse is like racing!

Yeah. And we've got

half an hour.

Half an hour. But I think

this is so specific,

like I think I may have even

interacted with this person.

-Oh, really?

-Well, yeah.

I have a pretty good idea

of what they look like.

But what is so exciting is that

the k*ll Zone is now live.

-[alarm blaring]

-We're hitting the crunch now.

PERRY: We are literally there,

and I could not be

more excited!

[alarm blaring]

-[weapon firing]

-Player eliminated.

Player eliminated.

Player eliminated.

[body thuds]

Oh, my gosh, hang on--okay!

Oh, wait, so he's cracked!

That's him. That's him!

He's running!

-That's him. Is that him?

-No, I don't think that's him.

No, no, that's not the guy.

-PERRY: What?

-No, no, no, the target's

still alive--we've got

two minutes to find him.

PERRY: So, wait. Who else

is left in the k*ll Zone?

[uplifting music swells]

EYELIGHT: EyeLight Read error.

EyeLight [static] read error.

[breaking up]

EyeLight read error.

Error...error.

[alarm continues blaring]

Esther, it's me! No!

[weapon fires]

Player eliminated.

[alarm continues blaring]

[panting]

Ten, nine,

eight, seven,

six, five,

four, three,

two, one.

The timer has expired.

Congratulations,

Alec Michael Turner.

You have survived "The Draw."

You are the winner.

-Congratulations.

-Congratulations!

Enjoy your winnings.

You deserve every single

-penny of that.

-Yay!

Oh, my God. I don't know

how we're gonna top that

tomorrow night,

but somehow we're gonna try.

So tune in tomorrow,

but, wow, what an ending.

-So excited.

-MAL: Could be you.

PERRY: It could be!

PRIME MINISTER: There are

a number of social taboos

that we've now removed

that have upped the ante

for certain sections

of the population

that want a slightly

different experience.

So, uh, what is acceptable

in society

really is defined

by that society.

We've been elected

on a certain mandate

to deliver that democratically.

Um, thousands of years ago,

gladiators would compete

in the arena

for plaudits, prizes,

what have you.

Now, we moved away from that.

That's not to say that

it's right or that it's wrong.

Uh, it's just our society

changed,

moved away from that.

Our society is changing again

again,

because that's what people

want to happen.

And all we're really doing

here, I guess,

is we're simply

reframing freedom.

[door opens, closes]

EYELIGHT: Welcome, Jade.

Alec.

You can see me?

They're fixing my EyeLight

tomorrow.

She would have k*lled you.

You should have let her.

I didn't sh**t.

When I saw that picture,

I knew it was you.

I couldn't let her k*ll you.

Thank you.

[intense music throbs]
