[♪ Vanacore Music:
"Getting My Moment Tonite"]
[Tim] Designers, come on in.
Winning the avant-garde assignment was
really important for my confidence.
It proves to me
that I can make it to the end.
Oh, wow. The final five.
I can't believe it.
One of you is going to get
one million dollars.
But it's only going to get harder...
for you guys, but the same for us as well,
to make a decision.
We're looking at every detail.
I mean, it's a million dollars.
It's totally insane...
but the competition
is getting more intense.
Everyone is an excellent designer,
you know?
It's anyone's game, at this point.
For your next assignment,
you're going to tackle a facet of business
that is paramount to your success
as a global brand.
And that facet is...
-...marketing.
-Yes.
Yes. We want each of you to create
a two-look collection
to be featured in a video advertising
campaign for your brand.
These days,
as in-person fashion shows wane,
video campaigns
are even more critically important
to promoting your brand and its messaging.
Some designers are even replacing
traditional fashion shows
with digital presentations.
Yeah.
I love this assignment.
Marketing is something that I do
all the time.
I want to show up to the judges
that I can win this one.
Each of you will be working
with a videographer
who will sh**t and edit your videos.
You have two days for this assignment.
However, you have one day to create
your two-look collection
and one day for the video.
This means you will only have
one seamstress night, alright?
[laughs]
And your fashion show will be
a drive-in theater runway show.
-Yeah!
-[Raf] Exciting.
How are you guys feeling about this?
Are you designing in your head already?
What's happening?
I am thinking about the assignment
that I did not win
because of the pictures.
-It's good that you're always thinking.
-It's--yeah.
-And it's good to reflect upon that.
-[Heidi] Yeah.
Win this time.
-Yeah. [laughs]
-[Tim] Yeah.
I feel so haunted by this assignment,
because it reminds me
of the social media assignment.
I don't think it looks very modern.
I'm still a fan of the clothes,
but I'm not drawn to them in this picture,
which is a little disappointing.
My time here has been challenging.
Everything I do is not rendering
the results that I really, really want.
So, I'll see you at your fashion show,
and I can't wait to see
your brands' videos
come to life on the big screen.
Good luck, guys.
-[Raf] Good night, guys.
-Bye. Thank you. Goodnight.
[♪ Robin Loxley: "Young and Restless"]
-[Raf] Andrea took my model.
-[Andrea P.] Yes!
Okay, I ain't got time to be out today.
[Andrea P.] We have so much to do.
We need to pick our location
for our video sh**t,
pick our models, fabric shop,
and get to working on our collection.
I'm super excited
about doing the assignment.
I selected the Channel Marina.
I live in Miami. I love the water.
Like, I feel comfortable
doing the campaign there.
This assignment in particular, you know,
I'm really excited about it,
but for me to get started,
it's a little challenging.
You know, I'm thinking about,
maybe there's a historical location
or old house or something.
That would be my normal go-to,
but instead, this Graffiti Alley comes up,
and I pick it for some reason,
I'm like, I don't know...
It's... Where am I going with this?
So, basically, I'm looking for,
like, black or super dark gray.
For this assignment, we have the option
of using the personal shopper,
who will be pulling additional fabric.
Okay, so, that's an option.
Beautiful and intense colors.
If you can find this color here.
Okay.
-But, in, uh, satin silk.
-Okay.
I am making a tunic shirt,
long,
fluid,
silk with different colors.
And one trench dress,
graphic, colorful.
With these two outfits
combined together,
it will be great.
[♪ Rankz: "Gwop"]
-[Raf] Where are you going?
-[Andrea P.] The Hollywood Hills.
Ooh.
My brand is about support.
It's about celebrating sisterhood.
This video is the perfect way
to show another woman
creating a friendship in fashion
and say, "I see you, sis."
One piece of the cable knit,
and the rest in the beaded fabric.
You got it.
[Andrea] I really want to create
an amazing coat,
like, a fun, easy piece to wear,
paired with a sheer, beaded pant.
And I really wanted
to create a staple piece
which is a chunky, knit turtleneck.
Okay...
It's really important to my brand that
everything is created and designed
from something I've drawn,
so I wanted to do something
like a hand-painted print,
something where the models
will be painting each other.
Which, I'm like, I don't know
how I'm going to do this,
now that I'm thinking about it.
[Andrea P.]
Guys, I think our fabric is here.
[Raf] Mmm.
Great. Okay.
It's gorgeous.
For my first look,
I am doing a fitted trouser
and one of my classic
oversized button-downs,
and for my second look, it's a dress.
I am showing it on my male model.
Over the dress, I am making a coat.
Wearing coats on the beach
will be interesting. [laughs]
My brand's about being genderless.
Growing up in Poland,
there's so much pressure
about what gender coding is.
I personally wear dresses, I wear skirts,
and it's how I express myself.
It's what feels good to me.
That's very my brand.
Clothing should be emotional,
something that will help you
really bring on
what you are as a human being.
I love that you found leopard
in that boutique.
Oh, yeah, it was, like, in the back.
That's cool.
I love animal print.
It's a timeless print.
It's a little bit risky,
but it's always on trend.
I was thinking to mix
animal print with fringes.
I'm pushing myself to mix and match
fabrics and to do different things.
In the last assignment,
I thought I'm going home,
so I really need to prove to the judges
that I deserve to be here.
This is awful.
I definitely overthink things.
I definitely hear the judges in my head
or certain criteria.
And sometimes it throws me.
I guess because I know
I want to paint on the garments,
but now I'm thinking it's graffiti.
I'm not a graffiti artist.
It's kind of, like, I can't handle it.
And that's--
those things really throw me off.
"It is I,"
I'm saying to a very quiet room.
-How are you, Raf?
-Hi, Tim.
So, I'm working on my story for tomorrow.
I'm sh**ting at the beach.
And I really want to capture
the feeling of what my brand is,
which is very soft and fluid
and emotional and calm.
Okay.
So, my first look, I'm doing
a very tailored trouser,
and on top, I want to do one of, like,
my oversized button-downs.
Mm-hmm.
And then, for my second look,
I want to do, like, this bubble coat,
and underneath, I was planning on doing
one of, like, my dresses.
For me, I feel as though
the selection's random.
I don't see what really makes
these two pieces look like a collection.
This khaki color is just sort of h*-hum.
You look really worried.
No, I'm just, like, you know,
scheduling everything in my head.
Well, that's a good thing.
-Work, work, work, work.
-Yes.
So, what I want to create is this idea
of, like, creating a friendship
through clothing.
Oh. Tell me more.
So, there's two girls, and one of them
has on, like, a throwaway outfit,
and she's, like, admiring
the girl passing her,
and then, they'll have, like,
another encounter,
but this time, they'll both be,
like, amazingly dressed.
I have to say, I think
that the concept's very captivating.
Thank you. I have something
to prove this time. [laughs]
-Okay.
-Yeah.
What look is the model wearing
who's captivating this poor plain Jane?
It's gonna be a coat with, like,
a cool black dress underneath it.
-Oh, those go together.
-Yeah.
-Okay. It's nice.
-Thank you.
I haven't won an assignment yet.
I came here to win.
I came here to compete.
I really want to do
animal print this time.
-Well, you've done it.
-Yeah.
I'm doing, like, a blazer,
and I'm doing this skirt.
I love the feathers.
And I pair up with this one.
I don't know if you think it's
too matchy-matchy, but I love the--
Well, what's interesting
is you can mix these up.
-Yeah.
-You can wear--I mean, if you wanted to--
-Yeah, you can change it between those.
-Yeah.
Andrea, what is
your video campaign concept?
There are, like, different woman
from different backgrounds,
and they can wear the same clothes,
and they can feel powerful and confident.
I love that idea.
We have a lot of media.
It's a lot of information.
So, we need something
that catch the eye, for sure.
Exactly.
I haven't had the opportunity
to win any assignment,
but I feel great.
I'm gonna win this one.
This is for me. [laughs]
So for the video,
I was inspired by "Breathe."
And so it's mixing
strength and beauty.
It's very important in my brand.
So, I'm doing a shirt dress.
There's a belt just
on the front part,
-in these colors.
-Mm-hmm.
And this is for my second silhouette.
It will be a trench dress
with denim,
real structure and volume.
Well, I think it's a good concept. Yeah.
-Are you concerned about time?
-Uh...
Yeah, I think it's good.
Okay.
I manage my time, now I know.
Alright, I'm going to leave you,
so you can get back to work.
I have nothing made yet.
But this time I want
to do every step perfectly,
and I will try to give many
pieces to the seamstress.
I hope they will understand
what I want to do.
I hope.
[Tim] How are you, Gary?
-I'm just struggling a little bit.
-Talk to me.
I'm doing my usual thing where I go...
[humming]
Well, it seems to be serving you well,
though I don't envy you emotionally
and psychologically.
-It may just be your process.
-Yeah.
What I wanted to do is have
some kind of representation
of past and present.
The idea right now
are that these two women,
one is speaking to herself in the past.
But, really, I want it to be a blank,
kind of like an artist canvas,
for this character to draw on.
-Oh.
-You know, and do a kind of a live filming
of drawing as a mother is speaking.
This sounds like a tall order.
Yeah, it's a lot, and I don't really
even have the dialogue.
It's very conceptual.
I'm not sure how this is gonna work,
honestly.
-And you need to have two fabulous--
-I know.
...garments.
-This is a full-length dress right now--
-[Tim] Well, it's just--I mean--
I'll be blunt. It's h*-hum.
If you don't have great clothes,
it doesn't matter.
No, absolutely.
I like the idea of it,
but if it really relies upon
one of the model's hand skills
in terms of doing this,
that worries me a lot,
because there's so much
you're not going to be able to control.
Right.
-Ay, ay, ay.
-Alright, Gary.
-Thank you very much.
-Thank you.
Alright, designers,
your seamstress pickup is tonight.
Your videographer will be coming in
for a consultation later today.
It's going to be a busy evening.
Work hard, everyone.
-[Raf] Thank you, Tim.
-[Andrea S.] Thank you, bye.
[♪ Wizardz of Oz: "Ferocious"]
-Nice to meet you.
-Oh, sorry.
-Nice to meet you.
-Nice to meet you, I'm Colton.
-Andrea, how are you?
-Good.
What kind of music do you envision?
Uh, slow.
Like a movie.
Some suspense movie.
Okay.
I want them to create a friendship
over fashion.
-I love it.
-I love your enthusiasm. [laughs]
Likewise.
I want to mix and match this top
with the skirt.
I want to show the versatility.
So, we get the same shot in both outfits
and then--
-Correct.
-Go between. Yeah.
This is my location.
It just, like--When I saw it,
I just instinctively chose it.
It's so cool.
I'm going for, like, a love story vibe.
I can imagine a lot of closeups,
slow motion, but it's tender.
"Tender" is the perfect word
to describe this.
I'm very excited for this assignment,
because video campaigns allow me
to showcase
the feeling of what my brand is about.
So, basically, I want to create,
like, a live print.
Black paint on a natural fabric.
After the Tim Talk,
I decided to scrap the painting,
but I was thinking,
"You know, I'm gonna do this myself."
They start out like this, and then
there's more, and there's more...
So, it's basically, like,
a stop-motion of that.
How long does it take you to paint,
do you think?
I have no idea.
I'm a little nervous,
but in order to do something big,
you kind of have to take a big risk.
And... break. [laughs]
-Bye.
-Bye.
-Hi.
-Hey.
-[Raf] How are you guys doing?
-[Andrea S.] How are you?
We still have a lot of work to do.
Oh, my God, it looks super cool.
So, this is going to have sleeves.
Oh, it looks really cute belted.
Do, like, a little walk.
[♪ Joy Charity Enriquez: "Show Out"]
How about, the top is not long enough?
Do either of you guys write poetry?
Because what I'd love
is have you narrate the film.
My brand is about
how we relate to the past,
and so, I want to show that.
The idea is that it's a letter
to my younger self.
It would be great if it was
from your perspective.
[model] Okay, yeah,
I could write it for sure.
[Gary] That would be amazing.
You will wear like trench dress,
graphic, uh, with this fabric.
For the first fitting, I don't have
any clothes finished.
Thank you.
I know their body shape,
so I'm not really scared about,
is it fitting well or not.
I'm making another coat.
Of course you are.
I can barely make one; you're making two.
I feel very strongly about my coat,
and I feel like the best way
to really show the judges
what this collection is about
is to add another coat.
It's gonna set my video off,
because my model's,
like, envying the other model's coat.
Tim definitely was not a fan
of the camel-colored dress.
So, I'm changing it to
this perfectly beautiful charcoal wool,
and it looks perfect.
So, I feel pretty good right now.
We have five minutes
'til seamstress pickup.
Uh...
I am running out of the time.
"Follow..."
Yeah, can you write
it for me please?
Because I knew what happened last time
when Lucie didn't make
the seamstress pickup,
so, I'm trying to help her.
And, and then what do you?
You put like here?
[Raf] You just attach it to the dress,
like, pin it.
[Andrea P.] She's literally working
to the second.
Collar.
Collar.
It's insane!
[speaking French]
Lucie, go throw it in the bag.
Just go throw it in the bag.
You don't have time for that.
Okay.
I put like all in bag like this?
[Andrea P.] Just throw it in there!
Because...
-Oh, my God!
-[Andrea P.] Lucie, go.
[Gary] It looks like there are
at least 50 pattern pieces to this coat.
It looks so complicated.
So, here?
Oh, my God!
[Andrea P.] Lucie, just throw it
in the bag! Throw it in the bag.
Lucie, put it in the bag.
[Lucie] Here!
We're all trying to root for her,
but at the same time, we're like,
"Mmm. No."
[Lucie] Okay.
-Okay.
-Thank you.
Oh, my God. Be careful, uh?
Wow!
I made it!
[sighs]
I just put, like, everything inside.
Let the magic happen!
I give the most difficult to sew
and to make.
I can make this one.
Well, Lucie, I'm gonna need you
not to do that no more,
'cause you stress me out.
[both laugh]
I stopped breathing. Ay, girl. [laughs]
[pop music playing]
-[Andrea S.] Oh, yeah.
-[Raf] Yay, seamstress pickup...
Yes.
Aha...
Okay, okay.
Better.
Nice.
-[laughs]
-Nice shoulder.
Okay, cool, let's do this.
Oh, my God.
I am surprised about the seamstress.
They make all of the dress.
But what I need to do
is to finish all the details.
And also, to finish the tunic shirt
before the video sh**t.
So it's a little bit stressing.
[Lucie] Oh, my God.
Get it, Lucie. You can do it.
[♪ Vanacore Music: "Glam"]
Let's try those on you first.
-How do you feel it?
-Good.
Here we go.
These look pretty good.
Okay.
That's okay, I don't have time.
Just hold it like that.
[Sheron] Dear me, younger me,
just like your hair defies gravity
and your skin absorbs the sunrays,
you are miraculous.
I feel excited just hearing Sheron's
voice. It is exactly what I wanted.
[Sheron] Stand firm in your identity
and tell them,
"I am."
That's amazing.
I really couldn't ask for more.
I knew she was gonna k*ll it.
She understood what I was trying to do
with my vision.
[gasps]
The belt is horrible.
I want her to see you and then be like,
"Dang, I love that coat,"
and then try to go figure out
where to buy it.
Okay, let's do this.
When you walk out, like,
front to the camera,
super powerful and confident.
[Andrea P.] I feel like the judges really,
really see potential in Andrea's work.
Beautiful, I love how it looks.
Esthetically, she's amazing,
and she did come prepared
to grow her business.
And she's hungry.
Like, the girl is hungry.
[Raf] Alright, have fun, everyone.
Good luck on your shoots.
[Andrea S.] Let's do this!
[♪ Vanacore Music: "Millionaire"]
I think this is the best spot,
this part here with the water, the rocks.
Our first shot, we're gonna start
with your faces,
like the shot of your upper face, eyes.
I had the storyboard, and I was like,
let's just stick to this plan.
[Colton] Action.
[Andrea] Play with it, hold it...
Beautiful.
Perfect. Next one, it's walking.
Beautiful.
Then let's do the front.
I'm doing what I know to do.
Content creation for social media
is all what I do on my daily basis.
One step, two, and then change outfit.
Alright. Action.
I'm giving a message
of a beautiful, strong woman.
That's what my brand is all about.
-[Andrea] Love it. You got it?
-[Colton] I got it.
[Andrea] Okay.
Can you turn towards me
and look straight into the lens? Perfect.
-[Raf] You have someone in the shot.
-Yeah.
I'll try to frame 'em out.
The first thing that I notice,
the beach is packed.
We'll have people coming by.
There's, like, umbrellas, beach blankets.
I see kids in the water.
We can also go over there,
if you want to get it wider,
'cause there's no cars around.
For me, the biggest thing is,
how do I make this emotional?
You guys are facing the ocean.
Phillip, can you kind of lean on
Edward's shoulder?
This is exactly the shot.
[♪ Nick Kingsley & Hannah Hart:
"Run with the Sun"]
To me, making clothing is emotional.
[Chris] Beautiful, beautiful.
[Raf] I'm about to start crying,
because the goosebumps come in...
It's like, it's all happening.
I feel like everything's
falling into place.
Yesterday when you said "tender,"
like, I knew this was going to be amazing.
And there's going to be a closeup
of her face, or where you thinking...
Yeah, I think you have to...
Shh...
Your head.
You know you do like this
and you go down.
The theme of my film is "Breathe."
And after you go close up
to her head and you turn around.
I didn't really prepare the story
because the clothes make the story.
The thing is I really want to see them.
You know?
And... action.
Yeah, perfect!
Exactly!
It's not a real story,
when she has to do that,
she has to do that.
'Cause when you do that,
it's too much fake.
-Okay. Yeah, good.
-Good? Okay.
And... camera speed... action.
Cut. Fantastic.
So, when he gets that closeup,
I want you to...
I'm really thinking about the ways
that I can captivate the judges,
and it's really important for me
to show them
that I walk it like I talk it.
Y'all are gonna have a sisterhood moment,
like, "Oh, girl, you fly."
Yes!
Fabulous.
I really am making it a point
to deliver with this video.
And action.
Yes!
Thank you, girl.
[Carlo] Cut. Beautiful.
It's everything.
[♪ Raphael Lake, Aaron Levy
& Wesley Eugene Smith: "Bets on Me"]
Can we get an establishing no-paint shot?
-Yeah, I think so.
-Okay.
Action.
-So, I'm going to start in.
-Yeah.
I feel like there's a little bit
of pressure on myself to make something
really interesting and exciting.
[Sarah] Action.
Alrighty, she's a badass,
and she walks this way.
She's becoming who she is.
-[Gary] Okay. Can I go in again?
-Yep. Do it.
I think it was a risk
to do the live painting,
but at the same time, not to do anything
was definitely a greater risk.
I had to, like, juice these things up.
How's it looking, Sarah?
-[Sarah] It's looking super cool.
-Okay.
I really like what you're doing
with this one.
I feel like Sarah and I really work
super well together.
And Sheron wrote the poem.
You are miraculous.
So, I feel really good.
I thought we made a great team.
Yeah, we got everything. Yay!
-So, I walk out, pose...
-Pose and then...
-And then I put it on...
-And then you leave.
Just wait 'til you see the video.
You're gonna love it.
[gasps] I don't like this belt.
I'm not sure about the belt
that I did in the last minute.
What happened to this belt?
I don't know.
Okay.
Get your hat on, okay?
I'm not as confident as I normally am
going into the runway.
I love Gary's looks.
Gary, I love it!
[Raf] It's so cute.
Yeah, it looks good.
I feel goosebumps,
and I'm really, really excited for him,
but it makes me a little uneasy,
because if I'm this excited
about his look,
then the judges will be too.
[pop music playing]
Wow! I mean, Tim, I can't believe we have
our own Making the Cut drive-in theater.
I know, and what a great way
for the designers to present
their advertising campaigns.
[Heidi] More than ever, digital marketing
and advertising campaigns
are so very important.
And these ad campaigns will reveal
each designer's ability
to market and promote their brand.
And as we know,
the traditional fashion show,
in many ways, is a thing of the past,
making these digital campaigns paramount
for a brand's success.
I can't wait to see
what they've put together.
I know, I can't either.
We're grateful to have one of
the most prominent faces in fashion,
seen on the runways around the globe,
supermodel Winnie Harlow.
And, of course, we're thrilled to have
the creative director of Moschino,
Jeremy Scott.
We also have a special guest
with us tonight,
costume designer and stylist to the stars,
Shiona Turini.
Welcome.
Shiona has styled many television shows,
music videos,
and, of course, advertising campaigns.
We're very lucky to have her
giving us feedback
on the designers' campaigns.
[Tim] Okay, it's showtime.
Alright, let's start the video campaigns
and the fashion show.
Yes, let's do it!
How are you feeling about this?
-Good. Super excited to see the video.
-Yeah.
-Here we go.
-[excitedly] Uh-huh.
[slow pop music playing]
I love seeing your items of apparel change
from one model to the other.
-Yeah, I like that mix and match.
-Yeah.
Hmm. I mean, I can definitely tell
that it's her.
Right.
[Heidi] I love the different fabrics
mixed together.
[Andrea] The first time
I used this fabric.
I feel proud. I like it.
-[Tim] The black. Yeah.
-Yeah.
[Heidi] I mean,
the length of this mini is just...
[Winnie] Perfection.
These clothes feel real.
-They feel like you can go buy them.
-Yeah.
I feel like I know that cool rock chick
who'd wear them.
-[Shiona] I know this girl.
-Yeah.
-[Shiona] I love this girl.
-Yeah.
-I hang out with this girl.
-Exactly.
But I'm not hanging out at the marina.
[Shiona laughs]
-Thanks, Andrea.
-Thank you.
-Andrea.
-Hey, Tim.
[rock music playing]
That video made me so happy.
I thought it had a concept,
it had a story.
It made me feel community and friendship.
-[Heidi] I like that athletic feeling...
-[Winnie] The stripes.
...because, usually,
you see that in athletic wear.
I like that she put that on there.
-Hi, Lucie.
-Hello, Tim.
[eerie music playing]
I mean, I'm not understanding this video.
There's too much nature.
Where's the clothes?
[Heidi] Also, this music is creeping
me out a little bit, I have to say.
-That's it?
-Yeah.
Bizarre.
[upbeat pop music playing]
[Heidi] I think girls would buy that.
They'd wear that over jeans.
But why is that a gray belt?
Can someone explain that to me?
[Winnie] I... yeah.
[Tim] It's a beautiful silhouette.
[Lucie] Thank you.
She looks very powerful.
I like what the shape is, I just feel like
the fabric leaves me wanting
-either a texture or then going further.
-[Winnie] Yeah.
[Jeremy] It's almost like too
middle-of-the-road, like a little neutral.
-Hi, Tim.
-Raf.
[violin playing]
[Tim] It's very emotional.
-Thank you, that's what I was going for.
-You got it.
I see it's a lot of details everywhere,
but the clothes don't really give me
much excitement.
This outfit might be too oversized.
But I will say that I get a little lost,
especially in the second outfit,
'cause it's just, there's
no texture differentiation in the color.
[Shiona] Yeah, it's hard to see anything.
And it's just kind of like... [grunts]
[Heidi] Yeah. There's nothing that pops.
-Hi, Gary.
-Hi, Tim.
-How are you feeling?
-I feel okay.
[Sheron] Dear me, younger me,
just like your hair defies gravity
and your skin absorbs the sunrays,
you are miraculous.
You are powerful beyond measure
and ignite change by simply being.
You are already
the thing you are striving for,
the approval you are trying to obtain,
the title you are trying to win,
you are.
Some people
will only see you in your phases.
They will judge you by your quarters,
halves, and crescents.
But don't let that distract you.
Even in all of its phases,
the moon is still whole,
so never forget who you are.
Your identity is cosmic, extraterrestrial,
godlike, celestial,
favored by nature,
stellar and divine, you are.
So, when they try to place false labels
on you,
misrepresent you,
and tarnish your name,
stand firm in your identity and tell them,
"I am."
I love the poetry.
I love the video.
It is giving me a story,
it's saying something.
-It feels like it is culturally impactful.
-Yes.
[Sheron] You are miraculous.
Even in all of its phases,
the moon is still whole,
so never forget who you are.
I love these clothes. You can imagine.
I mean, you know I love a graphic.
It's human, and it's kinetic,
and it's energetic,
and it gives me a vibe.
Stellar and divine, you are.
Stellar and divine, you are.
I know when we met, I talked
about them painting each other...
-[Tim] Yes.
-And it was kind of all over the place.
[Tim] But then it all crystallized.
It all came together.
And you can see evidence of your hand,
as opposed to a silkscreen.
[Gary] Right, right.
I feel like he really tries
to think outside of the box,
and I think it's because
he does his own fabric.
It's not something you've seen before.
-It's always like... [gasps]
-One of one.
It's a breath of fresh air.
So, when they try
to place false labels on you,
misrepresent you and tarnish your name,
stand firm in your identity
and tell them, "I am."
I mean, those were some fun ad campaigns.
-Yes. We had some excitement there.
-Right?
The fashion world is changing so much,
and a lot of the runway shows
are not really happening anymore,
so these videos are so important.
-Yeah, I agree.
-I mean...
[Heidi] Gary is just so on the money
with, like, what is happening right now.
And he's giving us, again,
something so special.
Gary's giving me feels.
And then, of course, I love those clothes.
Those clothes are exciting,
they're original. They have vibrations.
-You remember them.
-Yeah.
My other top choice would be Andrea.
I loved that look with the pants.
I see myself wearing it after a show,
during Fashion Week in Paris.
-I'm running to go get coffee...
-Ouh là là.
...with you after a show.
[Shiona] I loved Andrea's video.
I thought it had such great energy.
It's like a sense of love and community
that is important
in setting yourself apart
from other designers right now.
You want your clientele
to feel supported by you.
They want to feel represented,
and I feel like she did that very well.
Let's talk about Andrea.
[Jeremy] I mean, cool rock chick.
I love that she gave me textures.
[Winnie]
When you look at that look, you say,
"Okay, cool. I know who made that one."
It speaks to who Andrea is,
and she's carried through who she is
into each look.
[Heidi] Showstopper also, you know?
It's definitely not a girl
that wants to blend in.
-[Jeremy] No.
-[Shiona] Right.
Her video, though--Why are you
at the marina looking like that?
I mean, I can see them--I can see them
coming off of a yacht party,
you know, in their little fits.
Let's talk about Raf.
I think he missed it today, for me.
I don't know.
I see potential there,
but then, it just also seemed very flat.
[Heidi] Nothing was exciting,
not even the color, the cut.
The suit was giving me, like,
your first interview, and, you know,
you've never worn a suit before,
and it's just, like, Dad's oversized suit.
Let's talk about Lucie.
I didn't love the video,
but I actually loved her clothes.
-[Winnie] Yeah.
-It looked very luxe to me.
But then, I didn't feel like
they coordinated together as a collection.
The fabrics didn't coordinate,
and the shapes didn't coordinate.
They definitely don't feel like
the same story.
And it was a disconnect for me,
for that video.
-Oh, that video.
-Yeah.
-Ooh, child!
-You only have such a short time.
Why are you showing us the trees?
I don't know.
She just has to refine it
and zero in on what the story is.
[Winnie] Right. What am I focused on?
If I spend all my budget for a campaign
and then I put it out there,
and people couldn't tell
it's for the clothes,
to me, that's a big failure.
[Heidi] Alright, let's talk
to the designers.
-Hello, everybody.
-Hi.
[Heidi] Hi there.
That drive-in was so much fun.
Before we get into this,
I want you all to know
that it's getting harder and harder
to make a decision here.
All of you have successful businesses
and a great deal of talent,
but there can only be one winner
who gets that million dollars.
We're here to find the designer
that can be
the next great global brand.
And the designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes
that walk in the fashion show
and the marketing video.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
We discussed your collection
and your videos,
and we have some thoughts
and some questions for you.
We've made some decisions,
but they're not necessarily final.
This conversation is important
and can change everything.
Alrighty. Gary.
-Hi, Gary!
-Hi, Heidi.
Alright, tell us what your fashion show
is all about,
and tell us what your video is all about.
My campaign started with what I'm doing
within my company,
creating video content that actually has
dialogue and stories.
There's a lot of poetry about, you know,
a letter to your younger self.
So, I just thought about the models
as actresses,
and Sheron said, "Oh, I'm a poet,"
and I told her about my idea, and then
she just came up with this beautiful poem.
And then, along with that,
I just have been wanting
to hand-draw something
and just do something directly
on the garment.
It was all, like, this collaboration
with these amazing people.
All my hair was standing up
when she was talking.
-[Gary] Wow.
-[Heidi] Like, it really hit home.
It hit in the heart.
I think, right now,
you do have to create something
that's going to make people
scrolling on Instagram
want to stop and pay attention
to your brand...
Right.
...and want to find out,
"What is this brand?
What does this brand stand for?"
You definitely created
something like that.
[Jeremy] I mean, you can imagine.
I loved the jacket.
And the skirt, it's so up my alley
of something so graphic and bold.
-[Gary] Right.
-And then having your kind of, in a way,
historic kind of silhouette,
so I love that contrast.
I really appreciate that you showcased
not only them, as models,
but you acknowledged
the artistic inspiration
that they brought to you.
It was their energy that I felt,
through your work,
and I appreciate that.
Judges, have any of you
changed your minds?
-No.
-No.
I haven't either.
Congratulations. You are the winner.
-Thank you. Thank you.
-[applause]
-[Heidi] But there's a little twist.
-Okay.
Fashion lovers around the world, we think,
will love your jacket and your skirt.
Your runway look,
not your accessible look,
will be available in the Making the Cut
store right now on Amazon.
I was just really proud of what I did,
and just how all the people helped out.
It was great that they recognized that
and acknowledged it.
-Congratulations.
-Thank you. Thank you, Heidi.
Andrea. Come on up.
Hi. [laughs]
The video campaign was about, like,
building friendships through fashion.
I love when I see, like, a woman pass,
and I can, like, say,
"Oh, I love your jacket.
I love your outfit."
So, I really wanted to show how, like,
women see each other.
And as far as my clothing,
I wanted to show, like, outerwear,
because you guys
haven't really seen that from me.
So, that coat, I wanted to turn, like,
a carcoat into something new and fresh.
And then I wanted to have, like,
a legitimate jacket,
and it was structural and shapely.
And then, you know, I love
a good, old sexy pant.
So... [laughs]
I always know what Andrea made,
but I never know what she's going to make.
And I really appreciate that.
I can totally see a lot of people wearing
your casual look, your coat.
To me, the stripes, normally,
we see that in athletic wear,
you know, and you put it on
like a camel coat.
It's kind of something new
that I hadn't seen before.
I also think your video campaign
really shows us who you are
and what your brand is all about.
You took this narrative of a girl
seeing someone wearing
what she's wearing in a club
and hating on her, and being like,
"Ooh, I wish she'd take that off,"
and turned that into
the reality of today, like,
we are uplifting each other,
we are loving on each other.
And those girls were loving on each other
in that video,
so, it was very beautiful,
and I love that.
Girl power.
-[laughs]
-[Winnie laughs]
I loved what you had to say
about your video.
I think that speaks to your personality
and what we've gotten to know,
how, just that beautiful smile
and that bright attitude,
and so uplifting.
Shiona, what did you think?
This is kind of your world
with the campaigns.
Yeah, a big part of my consulting jobs
is helping brands
to create marketing campaigns
and digital content.
I was really proud to see
that sense of community and support.
You don't see enough of that
when we are looking at fashion.
And so, I think it's a good part
to showing your brand DNA.
Thank you.
Andrea, we really think that customers
around the world would enjoy
your long camel coat.
So, we're going to do something
that we have not done on Making the Cut.
You also are a winner today.
-Congratulations.
-[applause]
My God!
It's available right now
in the Making the Cut store.
[Andrea laughs]
This feels so much better than second.
[laughs]
This win means
that I am no longer a bridesmaid,
and this time, I get to be the bride.
Yeah, the little fringe!
I want to see the fringe move!
[laughter]
I don't really feel like
I shared my win with Gary.
I feel like we had our own wins,
just together.
I really wanted to be able
to purchase this piece,
and now, it's going to be available
in the Making the Cut store.
-Good job. Thank you.
-[laughs]
Yay. Okay.
-Andrea.
-Hello.
Alright, talk to us.
The collection is named Divergence.
I want to showcase diversity.
I think animal print is
the print most used in fashion.
-I'm wearing it...
-Yeah, I mean...
You're wearing it, you're wearing it.
We're all wearing it.
In different ways, in different colors,
but I want to do it this time
a little bit my way.
The video, I want to showcase
the versatility,
which involves looks, I mix and match.
I do a swap.
And also,
I want to transmit the inner power
that every woman has
with the little words that I put there.
It's all about the brand.
I really had fun, because I tried to do
a different cut of jacket
with the labels here,
and also, I took risks,
because I never used
these feathers before.
and I love them.
Let's talk about the campaign first.
I totally get that girl, cool rock chick.
I was a little confused with the marina,
to be really honest with you,
'cause that setting and those clothes--
I didn't--I didn't really get that.
I do think that if you found,
like, a palm tree at the end,
you could have just gotten more shots
and edited
and focused in that area, perhaps,
and then it would have made more sense
for your brand.
And I think, for the collection,
I think you gave me the most diverse
yet cohesive collection of the night,
because I felt like I saw a lot
of different things with two outfits,
which is hard to do,
but yet still completely cohesive.
And I loved all the texture.
Sometimes, you know,
you just see a total look,
and you have to have that total look.
Not with your pieces.
What I thought was super smart
what you did,
any piece, I can remove,
and I can work that within my closet
and create all these new looks.
-So, I think you did a really good job.
-Thank you.
Andrea...
congratulations, you're making the cut.
-Thank you. Yoo!
-[applause]
Thank you, guys.
[Heidi] Thank you.
At this point in the competition,
it's not really about who did poorly,
because no one
really does anything poorly.
It's about who is doing the best.
So, we have to make some hard decisions.
Raf, we're going to talk to you next.
-Hello.
-Hi, guys.
So, today, I really wanted to focus on
showing the feeling behind my brand
and how I want my clients to feel
when they wear my clothing.
And I started with the word "tender."
So, what I wanted to make is
a relaxed pair of trousers
that's not drop crotch
and then one of, like, my signatures,
something that I really love to make,
button-downs.
And then, for my second look,
I had this idea of doing,
like, this blanket coat,
something that's very cozy and comforting,
and one of the dresses
that I love to personally wear.
I was a little bored,
and at this point in the competition,
there needs to be something
that excites me.
[Raf] I mean, it is true.
I am very... tonal designer.
You know, I do love whites and grays
and earthy tones.
-[Winnie] Mm-hmm.
-I do love that too. I love earthy tones.
As I sit here in a sparkly dress.
But, you know, I do too.
I mean, I don't always run around
in a sparkly dress.
I buy things to run around in as well.
But... I don't know. I always look for
a little somethin' more
that gets me, like, excited.
I'm also loud like Heidi.
But, I want to tell you,
you made me want to try on those pants.
The second look,
I couldn't really see the texture
or what I was looking at
on the video or on the runway,
which was a little disappointing.
I didn't realize that it was a dress
until the very end,
and that's something that
I would have loved to have seen.
So, I would agree
it was a little too quiet.
Jeremy, have you changed your mind?
No, I have not.
Winnie, have you changed your mind?
No, I haven't.
Shiona, have you changed your mind?
No, I haven't.
I haven't either.
Raf...
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
You're incredibly talented,
and we loved having you here with us.
At this point in the competition,
we're looking for something
that really grabs our attention.
And your collection and campaign
were a little...
too quiet to get us excited.
Okay. Thank you.
Thanks for having me.
It was such a great experience,
and, you know, this is just going
to push me to be...
hopefully even better at what I do.
I'm sad to see you go. I really am.
It's not over.
Hopefully, we'll see you guys in New York.
-Sorry.
-I'm sorry.
The competition is high.
I think that I'm leaving the competition
after I was able to show
who I am as a designer.
There's many different esthetics,
and, you know,
a lot of them are not for me,
and obviously,
my esthetics are not for them.
And that's what makes the world
a beautiful place.
The longer we have them,
the more emotional it gets.
It's so sad.
Lucie.
-Hi, Lucie.
-Hello.
-Bonjour.
-Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
So, the video campaign was
talking about "Breathe."
I choose this title because I think,
first of all, I need to breathe, really.
So I just want to explain that.
I just want to take this short instance
of this woman
to give the emotion of these
short moments
with the strong fabric, with the denim,
combining the colors also, with silk.
The video I didn't love so much,
I have to say.
It was so eerie.
The music too, was almost like,
horror music or something like that.
I was like, "What is this music?"
I was kind of confused,
because I know
this is an ad campaign for clothes,
but I saw a lot of other things,
other than the clothes.
The shots of the trees and the sky
made me think,
"Maybe it's a sustainable brand,"
but then, nothing else
hinted to that at all.
I like both of your looks a lot.
You gave us some great shoulders
and a great coat.
Loved the shape of your trench.
The dress was equally interesting
and nice--
I didn't really get the gray belt--
but I didn't understand the connection
between these two.
How were they cohesive in your eyes?
I don't know.
I love playing with the colors
and the shape also.
How is it for you to work here,
under these circumstances here?
You've pushed me so hard here,
I have to say.
Sometimes I get frustrated, also.
But I did my best to show you
what I can do.
Jeremy, have you changed your mind?
No, I have not.
Winnie, have you changed your mind?
No, I have not.
Shiona, have you changed your mind?
No, I have not.
I haven't changed my mind either.
Lucie, we think
that you are very talented,
and we love your elegant mix
of masculine and feminine,
but we're not sure you have
a clear brand message,
and there was a real disconnect
between your collection
and your ad campaign.
I'm sorry, you're not making the cut.
[Lucie] Thank you.
-[Heidi] Thank you, Lucie.
-Thank you very much.
For myself, I feel
super frustrated, I have to say.
For me, this assignment is
very important.
This is what your brand
is talking about.
So if they don't understand that,
I feel like, wow, okay.
Maybe I have to do better
to express more vision.
I'm ready to go home because
my son, my husband,
my Parisian life too.
So it's not bad to go back home.
Isn't this incredible, you guys?
You're the final three.
The odds for that million dollars
are getting
better and better and better.
[Andrea S.] Closer.
I mean, one of you is going to win
one million dollars.
[Andrea S. laughs]
Alright, guys.
That was it for today.
-[Andrea S.] Thank you.
-[Gary] Thank you.
-Bye.
-Congratulations.
-[Gary] Thank you.
-[Andrea S.] Bye. Goodnight.
[Andrea P.] And just like that,
final three is here.
Congratulations.
One of us is walking out as a millionaire.
-Winners.
-[Andrea P. laughs]
Winners.
It's overwhelming. It's a lot. It's a lot.
Gary and Andrea,
they're both super talented,
so, in order to win this,
I've got to work ten times harder.
I'm feeling amazed
that I made it this far.
First, I really want to win,
and I think I can.
That happened really fast. Are you okay?
-Yeah.
-[laughs]
I'm feeling a lot of emotions.
I feel proud to be in the final three.
It's unbelievable to be at this point.
I'm one step closer
to having this million dollars.
This is a dream.
We are just three now.
[Heidi] Next time, on Making the Cut...
For this next assignment,
you are going to create
your own concept store.
I love it.
This is a big decision to make so quickly.
I'm creating a subway station.
Is it special enough to stay
in this competition?
We're a step away
from one million dollars.
Million dollars! Let's do it!
I see that!
I've had to sacrifice a whole lot.
Not feeling 100%.
Uh!
Being in the final three is getting real.
She really created an experience.
You have a very clear point of view.
[Jeremy] He has the most unique vision.
How are we going to eliminate
one person tonight?
-[Jeremy] Oh, my goodness.
-[Winnie] Oh!
