monsters dance?

This is easily
the craziest experience of my life.

Are we rolling? Because I am ready.

Bet you didn't expect that.

[narrator] We started with


put them through state-of-the-art
motion capture tech and voilà!

[yelps]
Oh, my god! I'm a robot!

[narrator] A bunch of balletic beasts
super-charged for dance.

Every movement I do, my monster does?

I'm like a giant stuffed animal.

When I move my arms,
my monster's arms move.

[chuckles]
Oh, my god. I'm so adorable.

[grumbling]

I don't know. Am I really capturing
the character with that?

I don't.
Anyways, let me just sit down here.

[narrator] Why are we doing this?

That's a great question.

[narrator] In the real world,
our humans struggle with confidence.

I doubt myself a lot.

I think I hold myself back.

Dance Monsters
is a life-changing experience,

and I have grown to believe
that I can be a professional dancer.

[narrator] Now it's time to unleash
their inner dance monster!

I get to be
the superhero version of myself.

that a funny, one-eyed alien

is what it took for me
to believe in myself?

are aiming to impress our panel,

who have high standards,

so they won't be going easy
on our monsters just because they're cute.

The panel will be judging them
purely on their dancing

without seeing the human
behind the monster.

The actual dancers are backstage
at this very moment,

rigged up and controlling
every monster move, groove, pop or lock.

They're in a top-secret area
that even I am not allowed into.

I mean, what?

Okay, monsters. Go get yourselves ready.

Off you go!

[Ashley] While we find out
what this competition is all about.

I love this show already.

All right, here we go.

This is Round 1.

It's got three heats
with five monsters in each.

One will be eliminated from each heat

and the rest dance on through
to the second round.

Then it's a straight fight to the final,

with every episode bigger,
more competitive and full of surprises.

In the end, there can only be
one ultimate dance monster,

who will take home a life-changing prize
of a quarter of a million dollars!

That is going to be one rich monster.

Now it's time to get to know
our first furry friend.

And we're going in big. Real big.

Here comes Jam!

Behind this fur

is the coolest pre-school teacher
from Rosemead, California.

Seeing my monster
for the first time was insane.

[Jam laughs]
What?

Jam has this cool Rico Suave, like, vibe.

What's up, Jam?

I wanted to be a professional dancer,

but when it came to the dance industry,
I definitely didn't fit that slim look.

And a lot of the times,
I would go to auditions

and there'd be
the "take your shirt off" round,

and I knew at that very moment...

I was going to get cut.

[pants]

That definitely hurt,

and at that point,
I definitely gave up on my dreams.

Dance Monsters is amazing

because I'm only being judged on my dance
and not being judged on the way I look.

Jam is giving me, like, all this
confidence that I thought I'd lost.

And for me to feel it all over again,

you know, what I need, for sure.

has definitely had me push myself

in a way that I haven't pushed myself
in a really long time,

and I'm definitely worried.

This is huge and so exciting.

Has anyone ever done

I have to say
that I have a little experience

dancing with artists
like Britney Spears and *NSYNC...

You guys, I was obsessed
with the Pussycat Dolls, like, obsessed.

Get ready, because we're letting
another monster loose.

[Ashley] It's Marsha!

Seeing my monster for the first time
was absolutely incredible.

[Marsha giggles]
Oh, my god, I'm so adorable.

[Peaches] Every time I see Marsha,

oh, I love marshmallows,
I get a little hungry.

Stay away from me.

My favorite genre of dance is jazz.

[Marsha] My dancing is very similar
to how I am in real life.

Lots of attitude, lots of sass.

Ha-ta-ta-ta!

I used to be a Miami Heat dancer

and it is absolutely
some of the happiest times of my life.

Now I am a mom of one
and a dance teacher to hundreds of kids,

so the focus is never on me.

I really left
my own dance dreams in the corner.

Marsha, the panel are ready for you,

[Peaches] Yeah, go, go, girl!

It has been a really long time
since I've performed.

Being on stage
is definitely a scary feeling

but Marsha gives me that confidence
to be able to get out there.

I want to show my daughter
and show my dance kids

that dreams never die.

I think my daughter's gonna be
really proud of me.

[choked up]
And I hope that she is.

[Ashley] Dancing for a place
in the next round of the competition,

I really feel like I got to get back
into my dance dream,

and I just now remember
what that feels like.

This is the most life-changing
experience I've ever had.

Behind the fur, I'm a mechanical engineer,
and I work on oil rigs.

But what I really dream of
is dancing on Broadway.

I stopped pursuing my dance dream
because people told me

"people with your body type
don't make it".

[chocked up]
And I've been told "no" so many times.

And to shine as bright as I want to
as Peaches...

[deep breath, normal voice]
...is amazing.

I haven't danced like this
in almost a decade.

For me, I haven't performed in so long,

and I'm excited, but I'm just so scared.

Um, I feel like you started off
really, really good,

like, it was big and it was energetic,

but then I kind of saw you lose
a little bit of steam towards the middle.

And should you make it to the next round,
I would like to see

just a touch more variety
in your movement choice.

-Other than that, great performance.

and you have a lot of potential
that you still need to show us.

Well, growing I can do,

I think in terms of what
the other monsters have brought,

they have brought slightly
more physicality and energy and variation,

but in terms of the way it made me feel,
you really made me want to dance.

That's one of the most important
things with performance, you know,

I wanted to get up there
and dance with you.

done enough to stay out of the bottom two.

If you had to be a monster,

-My fur would be like satin.

I'm slightly grossed out
by your monster, yes.

[Beti] Definitely a little nervous
but in a good way.

my fur's standing up on end right now.

In real life,
I'm just a small-town kid from Kansas.

[Beti] In the town that I come from,
dance was not really what guys do.

I was bullied and I was put down
and I was beat down.

I have issues with my confidence.

I doubt myself a lot,
I think I hold myself back.

When I first saw myself turn into Beti...

[Beti laughs]

Something inside me just woke up.

Dance Monsters means
that I can dance with full confidence.

My insecurity and my nerves melt away.

My routine is very challenging.

about a specific dance move.

The one critique that I would give,

I would like to see
a little bit more hip-hop from you.

The moves that you were doing,

there were some hip-hop element to it,
but you could go even further.

That's what I want to see from you.

I absolutely can do that for you.

[Ashley] Meet Jellifer!

I used to be a professional dancer.

I used to do back-up dancing
for many, many artists.

Jellifer, what's Britney like?

She's sweet, she's cool
and fun to be around.

[Jellifer] I was at the top of the top
and I was living an amazing dance life.

But then I had to stop
because my husband passed away.

I was six and a half months pregnant,

and I became a single mom.

I did think
that was the end of my dance dream.

Since I've last danced professionally,
it's been ten years.

And that is scary.

♪ This is my time ♪

But I want to prove that I still have it.

Okay, Jellifer, it's time to dance.

The mom inside this monster
is 42 years old,

How does it feel now being center stage?

This is what I've always dreamed of.

Having my own dancers and my own show.

your monster is amazing,

like, you look,
you look incredible, Jellifer.

I was like, honestly, like...

And you can definitely tell
that you used to dance

because you probably had, like,
more steps than anybody we've had,

and it was really clean and well-ex*cuted,
so well done for that.

But sometimes when you are a good dancer,

you can kind of fall back
on your steps too much

and I think I wanted more heart,
more passion,

I wanted to sort of,
know you more through the moves.

just give me more... more personality.

I did think that she was really good.

for a very long time.
