This is Sugar Rush: The Baking Point!
HOST
SUGAR RUSH: THE BAKING POINT
The baking competition
where speed is a key ingredient.
Six teams of talented bakers
will face off in a race against the clock
and each other
to prove they're the best.
This is tipping.
One more time. I'll have to do it again.
This season, they'll have
a total of 24 hours to bake
and showcase their talent,
episode after episode,
in our delicious challenges.
Move it up. No.
We're wasting time.
Teams who fail to impress the judges
will be eliminated from the competition.
ELIMINATED
In each episode,
they can use up to six hours
to face off in two rounds.
Round one… cupcakes and creations.
Round two…
cakes.
Taste and creativity will determine
which of these teams will win
one million pesos
as well as the Sugar Rush trophy.
I'm Capi Pérez, and these are our judges.
Gris Verduzco from Mis Pastelitos.
The pastry chef
who revolutionized social media
with her sweet recipes
and cake challenges.
Luis Robledo, famous Mexican pastry chef
and award-winning chocolatier
who keeps wowing
the entire world with his creations.
And our guest judge, Erika Buenfil,
one of the most famous faces
in Mexican soap operas.
Gris Verduzco is explaining to our bakers
how the first challenge round works.
The theme is street food.
She's also warning them
that at the end of this round,
two teams will lose 30 minutes
from their time to bake the cake.
This is gonna be tough,
but there's no turning back.
Because that sound means
that the sweetest race has just started.
Follow me.
Hi, everyone!
You ready?
-Ready.
-Good attitude.
Great.
-Are you good?
-We're good.
That's great.
-Ready?
-All set.
-We're ready to win.
-Glad to hear it. Awesome.
-Good luck.
-Thanks.
Judges, Gris, Luis. So nice to see you.
And it's an honor to have my idol,
a legend, my spiritual mentor,
Erika Buenfil, here with us.
-Thanks.
-Thank you.
-Sure.
-How are you?
-Very excited.
-I can tell.
Gris, tell us about the first challenge.
-It's all about street food.
-Okay.
Our bakers must create
the perfect on-the-go breakfast.
In a cupcake.
But to make this challenge
more "eshpeshial"…
It's even better when you see it live.
Different.
This cupcake must be inspired
by their favorite Mexican breakfast.
Just imagine all the options.
I love having chilaquiles for breakfast.
With a roll, fried eggs…
All that inside a sweet cupcake?
If it tastes good, sure.
ROUND 1
CHALLENGE 1: CUPCAKE
-What's your favorite breakfast?
-Green chilaquiles.
You need cheese, cream…
ONLINE FRIENDS
Mixers here and there.
-Let's not bump into each other.
-Okay.
CHOCOLATIER & BAKER
There's nothing quite
as Mexican as a tamale torta.
-You nervous?
-No, I'm good. I'm pumped.
We'll impress them…
FRIENDS & COLLEAGUES
…with a deconstructed tamale
that has atole and everything.
You like that idea, right?
You like it that way.
Yeah, almost like a…
Café de olla?
With pastries too.
God. I almost ran over my teammate!
Our inspiration is churros and chocolate,
which is also very Spanish.
ONLINE FRIENDS
-Ten minutes have gone by.
-That's too long.
MOTHER AND DAUGHTER
We're planning to make
a sweet tamale cupcake.
We'll try our best.
-How's it going?
-Fine. Need some help?
Just tell me if I need to move.
-Come on, Ruth!
-Need a hand? How's it going?
I'll take a risk and make some roll dough.
Because what's a guajolota without a roll?
I've participated in national
and international contests.
It's opened my eyes
to types of baking I didn't know existed.
Ale, I'm taking a risk
because I don't wanna go home today.
Me neither.
We're a team.
He trained me, and I see him as a teacher.
How about I start making
the pink chocolate ganache?
-Sounds good.
-You got it.
I think of her as a little sister
I introduced to the world of baking.
To the oven.
This works like a fermentor.
Alan's proofing dough inside the oven.
Dough with yeast needs…
-You need it to rise.
-It needs heat to rise.
It's risky because it takes time.
Yeah, we're ambitious,
but I like to stand out.
-Come on!
-I don't know how long it's been.
Oh my gosh!
I hadn't even looked at the clock.
Remember that after this first round,
which is both cupcakes and creations,
the bottom two teams will lose 30 minutes
from their cake round.
Yeah.
I love tamales.
-Let me get closer. I can't hear you.
-And chilaquiles.
But I know guajolotas are your favorite.
Luli's my mom and best friend.
-Am I in the way?
-No.
I was feeling lonely over there.
After my heart attack,
I was very depressed because they told me
I wouldn't be able to do anything
other than sit around.
Luli, I left the ganache in the freezer.
And she convinced me.
-She convinced me to bake cakes.
-To bake some cakes.
They turned out okay.
-They're pretty.
-They turned out great.
And that breathed life into us.
Careful. Hot plate.
The cupcakes are ready.
You know what?
I have to moisten the tamale leaves too.
The cream's almost done.
As a kid, I loved really elaborate cakes,
but no one made them.
So I promised myself
that when I grew up, I'd become one
of the greatest bakers so that no child
would be left without an amazing cake.
I like them.
-Perfect.
-It smells like a tamale. Here.
I started baking
because I love trying new things.
When Iván visits my bakery,
I have him taste something new.
That's why I go.
Hurry up, Karen. It's been 45 minutes.
Come on! Let's get started on the churros.
Erika, would you like
to visit the workstations?
I'd be happy to.
-Let's go. You can talk to them.
-I'd like that.
This can't have a single lump,
or we'll get kicked out.
When I was in school,
I had a baking professor who told me
I'd never be able to do this for a living.
They need to taste the cream cheese.
-It's pineapple tamale with cream cheese.
-Right.
Professor, I know you're watching.
Don't change the channel. We're gonna win.
-Israel, Iván. This is Erika Buenfil.
-Hi. Nice to meet you.
-How's it going?
-How are you?
-She's got gorgeous eyes.
-Green like guacamole.
It's pineapple compote. Smell it.
It has cinnamon in it.
Ever heard of pineapple compote?
-No.
-No?
She's my "comp-atriot."
-My "comp-atriot."
-"Comp-atriots."
-I'm right behind you.
-I'll guesstimate.
We're already plating, and Gaby's adding
the final touches to our frosting.
We just need to add the sauce,
the chips, the cheese, and we're done.
I'm excited.
They're finishing up.
-Karen and Gaby are over there.
-They're trying to get ahead of us.
This game is interesting
but also complicated
because we only have
24 hours for the whole season.
That's six hours per episode.
But we can't use them all because
we need to save time for the finale.
Each episode consists of two rounds.
The first is cupcakes and creations.
And in the second round,
we have to bake a cake.
It's not about doing everything perfectly.
If we run out of time, we're out.
Enjoy watching us suffer.
ROUND 1
Ready, Gaby.
They finished.
Karen and Gaby finished
the cupcake challenge.
And when do they press the buzzer?
-When they're both done?
-Right.
The cupcake and the creation.
Then they can buzz in.
Luis, what is
the creation challenge about?
They need to present
a creation inspired by street food.
A garnacha or maybe a taco,
tlacoyo, or tamale.
A sweet tlacoyo?
It sounds almost poetic.
ROUND 1
CHALLENGE 2: CREATIONS
This will be a gordita…
-With cream. Great.
-Right.
We finished first, and that gives us
a lead for our second challenge.
Look at that.
ROUND 1
Ready. Go.
ROUND 1
CHALLENGE 2: CREATIONS
Let's start the dessert, our creation.
Come on, Gaby.
For the sweet creation,
we'll make some esquites.
We'll use these cups as molds
for some chocolate cups.
All right.
Get in.
The piping bag had too much ganache
in the tip, so it clogged.
Looks like Lis and Luli
are struggling with the ganache.
I'll do the ganache with a spoon, Lu.
-Lis, what if we use a bigger piping bag?
-Sure, but it keeps clogging.
The problem with cold ganache
is that it doesn't have
the right consistency
to pipe it on the cupcake.
Luli, don't stuff it.
-Are you sure?
-Yeah.
What if it's faster?
All right. Do it.
They're plating.
They've got their cupcakes. Them too.
I know we're worried about Alan and Ale,
but there's good news.
They're adding bolillos to their cupcakes.
I repeat, bolillos on the cupcakes.
Four for the judges.
Done. Let's move on.
-Ready.
-Done.
-The churros turned out great.
-Great.
Way to go, Ruth!
ROUND 1
CHALLENGE 2: CREATIONS
Where's the Manchego cheese, Rubí?
Down there. In the drawer.
For our creation,
we were inspired by flautas.
Some sweet flautas.
Powdered sugar.
The first thing that came to mind
was a fried quesadilla.
Give it your all.
I'm thinking…
We'll make something really crunchy.
Some flautas.
We'll use filo dough
to simulate the crunch in our flautas.
I think the dough is a bit watery.
I'm feeling the pressure
because the gorditas I'm making
aren't really turning out.
We still have to take these out.
They're burning them.
Do you think we could split these
so we can-- Careful.
We thought we had a lot of time left
because we finished the cupcakes first,
but this second challenge
isn't going how we would've liked.
Bakers, remember that the two teams
who fail to impress the judges
will lose 30 minutes
from their next challenge.
I don't know
if we should plate and accept the penalty
or keep wasting time.
They have to be identical.
But you're right.
I'm not in a good mood now.
The tip is clogging.
I can't use it like this.
ROUND 1
Luli, go.
Ready!
ROUND 1
CHALLENGE 2: CREATIONS
We need to hurry, Luli.
We're 30 minutes behind.
For our sweet creation,
we wanted to make Mexican corn on the cob
so the judges can pick it up and eat it.
They're using liquid nitrogen.
Enough.
I'll start. You whisk it.
Don't get burned.
I'm surprised they're not using gloves.
Nitrogen can really burn you.
That's 99 degrees below zero.
Don't add more. Easy, man.
The time limit is making us rush.
-Should I plate them?
-Yes, please.
-Get ready now.
-The first ones are almost done.
-Let's put it there.
-They're about to…
Ready!
They buzzed in!
A team finished?
Israel and Iván are done.
We have to hurry.
TIME REMAINING
-How about we go taste it? Let's go.
-Let's go!
Israel and Iván, what's up?
-Hi.
-Let's start with the cupcake.
For the cupcake,
we thought of the breakfast every Mexican
should have at least once in their life.
A tamale with a pinole atole.
And we added
a bit of pineapple with a compote.
-What?
-That's great!
It has a good balance of flavors.
I could taste everything you mentioned.
-The cream is a bit sweet for my taste.
-All right.
Tell us about your creation.
It's inspired by esquites and chileatole.
Inside the dessert,
you'll find Poblano pepper cream,
corn cake, a citrus compote,
and yogurt-based cream
instead of cheese.
It looked amazing.
The yogurt, that whole performance
we saw you do with the nitrogen…
Thank you.
We have our tricks.
I don't like spicy food,
so maybe I'd prefer a bit less pepper.
Oh darn.
I do like spicy food,
so I did enjoy this flavor.
That was surprising to see in a dessert.
-Thank you.
-Thank you.
-Come on!
-There!
ROUND 1
TIME REMAINING
Sorry to cut this short,
but Ruth and Rubí are also done.
There's some tough competition.
-I'll take 'em out.
-No. Easy.
Well, two out of six isn't so bad.
Ruth and Rubí,
tell us about what you've made.
Our cupcakes are a traditional
Mexican breakfast, churros and chocolate.
The dough has a bit of cinnamon,
and the center has stone-ground chocolate.
And we've also moistened them
with butter to add a sugar coating
and resemble the mouthfeel of a churro.
The only thing I would've liked…
is for the cream on the cupcake
to have been a bit sweeter.
All right.
It tasted milky to me.
It's a Greek tragedy.
Let's move on to your creations.
Our creations are flautas
filled with Manchego diplomat cream,
bits of yellow guava jelly,
and a cookie that isn't very pretty,
but it's sweet and crunchy.
-It's made of Manchego.
-To add our own touch.
I love flautas.
They're sour, sweet, and crunchy.
They're playful.
I did like that salty touch.
It was surprising.
Congratulations.
-Oh.
-That's it!
-And the shredded cheese.
-Take them.
ROUND 1
It still feels too hot.
If the bread isn't cool enough,
we can't work with it.
Will it cool quicker
if we cut it like this?
I'm already feeling the pressure,
and I'm getting nervous.
I dropped it, Lis.
What happened?
I'm not paying enough attention.
Careful.
-Go buzz in.
-Okay, perfect.
TIME REMAINING
Let's add the finishing touches.
Where are the napkins?
-Hurry!
-Ready.
-Ready?
-Buzz in!
Man, finally.
TIME REMAINING
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
I won't cry, because tears are salty.
If they get on the dessert,
they'll ruin it.
It's good I didn't eat
the leftovers because…
I'm very anxious
because everyone is finishing,
and we're not moving forward.
Two, three… Let's go!
ROUND 1
TIME REMAINING
Lis, I'll give it a minute,
then I'll take it out.
-Karen and Gaby, how are you?
-Hi.
Tell us about the cupcake.
It's vanilla with cheese frosting.
We made a green tomato jam
with a bit of serrano pepper.
It also has a pistachio sauce
with white chocolate.
-Here's the jam.
-Right.
You really paid attention
in this challenge.
I love how you combined
everything from green chilaquiles,
the cream cheese in the frosting…
-Well done. Congratulations.
-Thank you.
I feel it could've used
a bit more tomato jam.
I was looking for it.
But it tasted great.
Okay. Now tell us about your creation.
This was supposed
to be inspired by a pambazo.
So we tried to make
cream gorditas with apple crumble,
feta cheese, and a bit of milk skin.
It also has fig jam and morita pepper.
-It's nice and spicy.
-It's a bit spicier.
I expected something more polished.
However, all the flavors work well.
The presentation wasn't great,
but the flavor made up for it.
-Thank you.
-Thanks.
-Congrats.
-Thanks, girls.
Cut it.
Lis and Luli's kitchen is chaotic.
They're all finished.
-It even has bread!
-Alan and Ale, tell us about your cupcake.
This is made
with a sweet tamale and a pink tamale.
And a bolillo for decoration.
Under the bolillo, you'll find
a chocolate sauce to dip it in.
You'll see it falls apart,
just like a tamale.
Yes, it's like a tamale.
I feel like, in trying to make it taste
like a tamale and make a different recipe,
it ended up being a bit thick.
Never tried a tamale before,
Mis Pastelitos?
Now tell us about your creation.
These are flautas
inspired by apple strudel,
except we used plantain
and filo dough to simulate the flautas.
The guacamole is made
with pistachio custard.
Amazing.
I would've gone for something
other than rice paper for the lettuce.
It adds nothing to it.
Okay, yeah.
The filling is great.
I expected it to taste like a tortilla,
but no.
It was a dessert. Well done.
-Thanks.
-Thank you.
ROUND 1
Even though I'm anxious,
they look really tasty.
I don't want to lose 30 minutes.
We have to buzz in.
ROUND 1
Done.
TIME REMAINING
We were the last ones.
I'm confident that we'll win first place
in the next round.
Dany and Ana Lau.
We wanted to make a cupcake
that tasted just like café de olla.
We added orange cream
to balance out the strong flavors.
We added a mini concha,
and we made pots out of almond marzipan.
You went deep with the cream.
-Yeah.
-That's good.
Wow. This is delicious.
The cupcake really tasted
like café de olla.
The cream was maybe a bit too greasy,
but it was good.
And the concha… I mean,
the time you spent on this was worth it.
Thanks.
Let's move on to the creations.
We went with quesadillas.
It's the classic, fried quesadilla
with sauce and cream.
Obviously, it's sweet.
And that's yogurt popcorn with cream.
-It has a bit of sugar.
-We wanted it to be balanced.
-We chose not to make it too sweet.
-Not too sweet.
You missed one ingredient.
Salt.
That contrast would elevate it
way more than you'd expect.
Oh man.
Maybe you're right.
I would've loved a pinch of salt,
but it was tasty.
-Thanks.
-Thanks.
Lis and Luli.
-Hi.
-Tell us about your cupcake first.
This is a sweet tamale cupcake,
filled with cheese and blackberry.
The topping is chocolate ganache.
On top, there's a guajolota
made from modeling chocolate.
I'm nervous.
It's a shame the ganache was cold.
-Yes.
-The temperature!
It changes the experience.
It was hard to bite through.
Yeah.
Right. Tell us about your creation.
You can pick this one up.
Let's see.
I'll turn it around.
We made a family recipe.
It's corn bread.
And we also made
vanilla panna cotta with cheese frosting.
The taste of corn is a bit strong.
Maybe if you had contrasted it
with the chili powder,
it would've been tastier.
Each kernel looked like it was on the cob.
-Congratulations. Well done.
-Thanks.
I hope the corn
helped us and saves us this round.
Bakers, the judges have spoken.
You all did a great job.
However, there was a team
that stood out because of their creativity
and the interactive way
they presented their creations.
Iván and Israel!
Hug it out!
Hi, Professor.
Now, the bad news.
Two teams will lose 30 minutes
from their cake round.
The first team
tried to use way too many elements
that didn't mesh well together.
Ruth and Rubí.
-We can't believe it.
-No.
ROUND 1
The pressure, tension, and stress
the second team felt in the first round
didn't help at all.
Lis and Luli.
ROUND 1
Luli, we just lost 30 minutes.
It's time to start
the second and last round.
The cakes.
So let's listen to my idol, Erika Buenfil.
For this last challenge,
you must bake a cake
that looks like a dish
or a Mexican street food stall.
How's that?
The hardest part of this challenge
is making sure this cake looks realistic.
But first, let's take a look at
the most important ingredient
in this program.
Time.
Israel and Iván are leading
with 4 hours, 18 minutes and 29 seconds.
While Lis and Luli
will be the last ones to begin,
with 3 hours, 15 minutes and 31 seconds.
I'll keep you posted as time goes on
so you can get started.
Remember to save some time for the final.
If you get there.
Okay?
Yeah, Capi.
Get to your mixers. Your time starts now!
ROUND 2
CAKES
We'll make the taco griddle with the dome.
We'll add the meat, chorizo, and onions.
The flavor will be Irish cream,
chocolate, and coffee.
How much of that million
do you think we've won
now that we've got that extra time?
-I'd say 10%.
-Ten or maybe 15.
Iván's my friend,
but right now, I hate him.
-Almost there.
-Almost.
-We'll catch up.
-I'm right behind you, Iván.
Time can really mess with your mind.
It can really stress you out.
Karen and Gaby, get to your mixers.
Your time starts now!
Okay, we'll make one of those baskets
people use to sell food.
The ones with the paper.
-A lot of snacks. Peanuts.
-Peanuts.
Our cake is inspired
by a street food stall selling snacks.
It'll be a lime cake,
and we'll add a lime cream filling
with tamarind pulp
and grasshopper dust
to make it a bit more interesting.
Come on!
We're all looking at Iván and Israel.
What did he blend? I couldn't tell.
I don't like seeing them work.
It adds a lot of pressure.
One, two…
-Our hands are shaking. We want to start.
-Like this.
Alan and Ale, Dany and Ana Lau!
Get to your mixers. Your time starts now!
-We'll make esquites, all right?
-Okay, yeah.
White cup, chocolate spoon, chicken leg,
the greasier, the better.
With a lot of kernels.
They want realism,
and I want that for our cake.
I'll speed up the process
by making a double batch.
In this challenge,
Ale will take on the role of head chef.
I'll be her sous-chef.
She'll have whatever she wants.
I'll make a traditional corn cake.
I'll make passion fruit toffee
and apricot jam.
How's it going, Chef?
I'm making the jam.
Okay.
I hope I'm ready to meet the challenge.
I'm a bit better at handling fondant.
-More viscous, right? Got it.
-A bit more viscous.
Okay. I want to make a taco stall.
-With a taquero. Sound good?
-Yeah.
And he'll have a pot, plate, and salsa.
-We'll call him Don Pancho, right?
-Yeah.
We've got 18 eggs.
I'll separate the yolks.
For the cake,
we'll use hibiscus, horchata…
And it'll be super delicious
because it'll have hibiscus gelée.
Now.
How's it going, Gaby?
Ready, Chef. I'm finished.
-Chocolate?
-Yeah.
Capi's coming. Oh no.
Bakers, I don't mean to pressure you,
but I wanted to remind you
that after this round,
one team is going home.
We have to hurry!
We're on it.
I'm getting restless.
STARTING IN
I want to start, please!
I tried to make two batches
for the blender, but they didn't fit.
The first thing I gotta do
is mix the recipes I already have
without forgetting what's in the blender.
That's crucial.
Hey!
Ruth, Rubí, to the mixers!
Your time starts now!
-We're gonna make a pot of tamales.
-A pot?
And a table. Like it's a fonda.
Yeah, a plate with more tamales.
-What about salsa?
-Perfect. I love it.
-A molcajete.
-Yeah.
We're gonna make corn bread,
and we'll add dulce de leche.
And crunchy, caramelized nuts too.
I missed my estimate,
so I'm mixing
all my blended ingredients by hand.
Being so ambitious
and attempting so many recipes at once
is slowing me down,
which was what I was trying to avoid.
-Ready.
-Got it.
I don't like waiting.
STARTING IN
I'm impatient.
I can't stand seeing everyone else working
while we still can't do anything.
Lis and Luli, how are you doing?
We're nervous.
You have to bake a great cake.
-That's your goal.
-To avoid going home.
I don't know how,
but we can't leave here empty-handed.
How are the others doing?
Lis hasn't started yet.
Ruth and Rubí just started mixing.
They're making decorations over there.
-Need anything?
-Hurry up.
-There!
-It's time!
-Come on!
-Lis and Luli! Your time starts now!
Let's just do--
Everyone is competing now.
For this round, we'll make a cake
shaped like an al pastor spit,
and we'll add a grill.
We'll add some greasy meat on the side.
What flavor is the cake?
-Hibiscus and tequila?
-That works.
Maybe the tequila
will make the judges happy.
-They'll vote for us.
-We'll stay.
Let's put this in the oven
and take out the other one.
Let's add a bit here.
Bakers, two hours and 20 minutes left
to finish your cake
and save some time for the final.
If you get there.
-We need to work miracles.
-Right.
-How are you, Ale?
-Fine.
How do you feel?
I'm overwhelmed.
Toffee ready. Wanna check the jam?
I'm not listening to Alan.
How are you?
It's complicated.
Really?
Ale is really on edge.
She's being short with me.
-Let me help.
-No.
Is it all doable?
Hopefully.
He was trying to help,
but that just stresses me out.
What's worrying you? The cake?
-I'm okay. You're stressing me out.
-Right. Sorry.
Damn it.
Calm down.
-No.
-If you calm down, I'll calm down.
Do they seem angry?
Yeah.
Okay, I'll calm down.
I know that Ale
was Alan's assistant at some point.
So maybe hierarchy
is working against them.
First, we'll solve this,
then we'll talk outside.
That's what a professional does.
Our little man is coming along.
Isra, you handle the griddle
so we can paint it silver.
-Sure.
-I'll do the cilantro.
-Israel and Iván had an advantage.
-They wasted it.
I feel like they didn't use it
to get ahead.
I won't make it as smooth
because it won't be visible.
Luli, I'm cutting the cake
so we can place it on the structure.
How does it look?
Perfect.
It's a 3D cake,
and it has a specific structure.
We must fight against gravity
so it doesn't go down.
What about Lis and Luli?
Have they stepped up their game?
-They look focused. Tunnel vision.
-So focused.
Totally.
ROUND 2
-Is it sticking?
-I think so.
An interesting detail about our cake?
The edible plastic bags that look real.
Add more snack bags, okay?
Edible bags.
I like innovative techniques.
-Don't cut so many. We don't need them.
-I'll just cut these.
-They look like surimi tacos.
-You just wait.
A bit over here. No, right here.
If we make mistakes,
this will get complicated.
Bakers, you've got
an hour and a half left.
Remember that, in the end,
we'll find out which of you
will lose their chance
at winning a million pesos!
We either win or die.
-It's settled.
-Bury me with my million.
You shape them,
and then you press them, all right?
You can make them thinner.
I think this is the shape.
We're adding
the final details to present it.
We still have time on the clock.
-Ready.
-Push it.
ROUND 2
They buzzed in.
TIME SAVED FOR THE FINAL
-They buzzed in? No way.
-Yeah.
Pushing that button is a win in itself.
Sure, take your time, man.
-Working on it.
-Meat's getting cold.
Why are they waiting to buzz in?
ROUND 2
One, two…
ROUND 2
TIME SAVED FOR THE FINAL
The rest aren't done yet.
-It's okay.
-Calm down.
I'm checking out the finished cakes.
I'm starting to question
if what we made is all right.
-It looks like a flowerpot.
-A tasty one.
I know that mine's delicious.
I don't know about the rest. Don't care.
-I think… Look, with cream…
-Don Pancho has curly hair.
We've competed together
and won before, so we'll do our best.
Let's buzz in!
ROUND 2
TIME SAVED FOR THE FINAL
Ana and Dany buzzed in, Mom.
-It does look like cheese.
-Hurry.
Looks like an esquite.
If they say otherwise, I'm not buying it.
But I can tell Ale is anxious,
and I don't like that.
Buzzer. Now.
ROUND 2
TIME SAVED FOR THE FINAL
Okay, let's hit the button.
-Come on.
-Let's go.
ROUND 2
Rubí!
-We're the last ones. Again.
-It's just us left.
TIME SAVED FOR THE FINAL
We need this to look good.
It's usually when we need to be focused
that something goes wrong.
Don't trip, Lis.
It'd be bad to drop this antigravity cake.
I just damaged it a little.
I'm so nervous.
-Lu, go.
-Now? Okay.
ROUND 2
Done!
I was about to buzz in myself.
Hug me, Luli!
TIME SAVED FOR THE FINAL
Ready.
Karen and Gaby, you two finished first.
Congratulations.
So, the judges are here,
and they'd love to know
what we're looking at.
Well, our idea
was inspired by street stalls.
Junk food, chips, everything in a stand.
-The bags look like actual plastic bags.
-Take one.
You can have one.
Sounds like one too.
This technique is really impressive.
You two never worked together before,
so it's like magic.
-Thanks.
-Thank you.
Israel, Iván.
Explain your idea to the judges, please.
When Isra and I met,
we had really busy lives.
So the only thing we could eat were tacos.
It has it all. You can see
the meat, sausage, onion, and nopal.
You expect it to be savory.
That's the secret.
-Right.
-And now, it's up to the flavor.
-I hope they value our memories.
-Please.
We wanted to make the classic taquero.
We named him Don Pancho.
Look at how you shaped his face.
Your technique is impressive.
The only thing I see,
because I'm standing here,
is that the fondant seams are visible.
But you could fix those details
with more time so they look perfect.
I want Don Pancho to make me some tacos.
Congratulations.
-Thank you.
-Thanks.
This is ours.
-A woman from the North…
-Twice as valuable.
Alan and Ale,
I see a controversial chicken leg.
Tell us about it.
We used different chocolate techniques
for the top, spoon, kernels,
and the dripping mayonnaise.
The chocolate techniques are easy to see.
You made your cake white.
I saw what you were planning.
Like a cup of esquites.
I would've liked
to see something more elaborate.
Something more theatrical.
But these are esquites.
I just saw the lime on the side.
You two need to get along.
Because cooking is about passion,
and if you get stuck on negativity,
it won't help.
That's how things go in a kitchen.
Thank you.
The concept is a tamale street stand.
The antigravity effect you added
is what catches the eye,
having the lid like this.
It's really creative.
Congratulations on the molcajete.
I wondered why no one made one.
-Thanks.
-Thank you.
-We did it, Ruth.
-We nailed it.
Lis, Luli.
Tell us about your idea
and your techniques.
Our idea was to make tacos al pastor
because we just love them.
I love the color and the details.
You can really see the work you put in.
The grill could've used a bit more detail.
Some embers and coals, maybe.
But you make up for it
with the wow factor of the lights.
Congratulations.
This cake deserves a round of applause.
-Thanks.
-Thank you.
Now, cut four slices
and take them to the judges' table
because flavor's what matters most.
All right.
My dear Karen and Gaby,
bring over your cake, please.
Winning a million pesos would be amazing.
Wish us luck.
Attitude.
Tell us about the flavors.
It's a lime cake with lime cream.
And we added tamarind pulp
and a pinch of grasshopper dust.
-Grasshoppers? For real?
-Yeah.
I just ate grasshoppers?
I think any decision they make,
we'll do really well.
This cake not only looks good
but also tastes great.
Eye-catching.
You'll taste Irish cream,
chocolate, and coffee.
The filling has cookies
to give it a contrasting texture
and also a delicious chocolate note.
I'm really nervous, but something
inside of me is telling me to calm down.
Cake in the oven,
glitter inside, and break a leg!
Our cake is inspired by aguas frescas,
with hibiscus and horchata.
So we made a moist cake,
and on the side it will have…
A hibiscus gelée that has
a bit of texture from the hibiscus.
This is an intense competition.
-It's high-level.
-A lot of talent.
-We're really nervous.
-Yeah.
Even a small detail
could make all the difference.
We made very juicy corn bread
with Swiss meringue buttercream,
butter, and dulce de leche.
The filling is caramelized nut,
and it's covered with chocolate ganache.
-That's it. We rolled the dice.
-Yeah.
We think it's gonna be close
because all the cakes are amazing.
It's a hibiscus cake
with hibiscus extract.
The filling is cheese
with a berry compote.
I'm so nervous. I hope they like it.
It's all about flavor.
We nailed it. The texture too.
Let's hope for the best.
This is corn bread
inspired by my family's recipe.
With an apricot confiture
and passion fruit toffee
that goes well
with the tartness and the corn.
I haven't felt nervous until now,
but this silence has me on edge.
Bakers, the judges have made a decision.
The first place team
will win an extra hour for the final.
And the second place team
will have 30 minutes added to the final.
If they get there, of course.
Dear idol of mine,
would you do the honors and tell us
which team came in second place
in this challenge?
The team that came in second place
managed to create a story
that matched their presentation
and flavors.
Dany and Ana Lau.
+ 30 MINUTES
-Give Erika a Don Pancho loyalty card.
-Totally.
Second place is nice,
but not as sweet as first place.
This team won
because of their fortitude,
their presentation,
and their flavor.
First place goes to…
Lis and Luli.
+ 1 HOUR
After this, Lis, let's take a sabbatical.
We deserve it.
-Are you surprised?
-We thought you'd send us home.
-Oh no!
-Ladies…
No way. You did a great job.
You earned a much-needed
extra hour for the final.
-If you get there.
-If we do. Yeah.
Some things are more important
than winning.
Having my mom here is one of them.
All right.
Now it's time to find out
which two teams made
the cakes that least impressed the judges.
The first team is…
Alan and Ale.
Step forward, please.
Please don't send us home.
We've got a lot to prove.
The second team
who failed to win over the judges is…
Ruth and Rubí.
-It's the first day, you know?
-The first day.
Up for elimination on the first day.
Judges, I'll ask you to
use your votes
to tell us which team
should leave the competition.
We'll start with you, Gris.
Even though I found the cake delicious,
I feel the technique you used
didn't really work out.
So I'm voting to eliminate…
Alan and Ale.
I'm about to cry.
The cake looked great to me,
but when I tried it,
I thought it was too sweet
and a little messy.
I'm voting to eliminate…
Ruth and Rubí.
Luis, it's up to you now.
Please tell us,
who should leave our competition,
Sugar Rush: The Baking Point?
I don't like having to decide this,
but it's my turn to vote.
Considering the high standards
of this competition,
the small details make all the difference.
My vote is for…
IN THE NEXT EPISODES
To your mixers! Your time starts now!
We can't fail today.
We have to beat the clock.
A piñata cake.
A Day of the Dead altar.
You'll have to breathe new life…
Yuck!
…into the awful cake you got.
This is impossible.
Scandalous! What are you doing?
For God's sake!
The team who will have to leave is…
It'll give it a touch that's…
"Eshpeshial."
-You change your mind every five minutes.
-Well…
Just finish your cakes!
-Hold this.
-This says it all.
-Go, Lis!
-It hurts that you have to leave.
One million pesos!
Have fun watching us suffer.
