All of space will be found

[chuckles]

Look, Captain! A brand-new planet.

I'll take us in for a landing.

[imitating machine noises]

We're landed now.

Comet Karl, come on.

We must explore this planet
for nice aliens.

[birds chirping]

[gasps]

All clear, Captain.

Let's check for friendly aliens over here.

[gasps]

Did you find aliens?

Hi, Karl.

- Hey, Karl.
- Hi, Heather.

Hi, Nolan.

Wait, are you the friendly aliens we're
looking for?

[both chuckling]

[both babbling]

[all chuckling]

Wow, is that your rocket ship?

Yeah, we're exploring the galaxy.

We have a rocket ship, space gear,
and even a captain.

I know. You can join our crew,

and we can all
explore the galaxy together.

Permission for friendly aliens
to come aboard, Captain Koo.

Koo, say your Captain Koo line.

[whimpers]

Captain Koo? Where are you going?

Why did your friend run away?

I don't know.
We were having so much fun playing.

Maybe she's afraid of aliens?

Do you think we should go find her?

Let's make sure Koo is okay.

[yelling] Captain Koo?

Are you looking for more friendly aliens
over here?

[Karl whispering] Hi, Stillwater.

Have you seen Koo?

[gasps]

Hello, Karl.

I believe she's around here somewhere.

I noticed you brought out
your rocket ship.

Have you been exploring the galaxy?

Yeah, me and Koo
blasted away from a meteor shower,

then landed on a planet
and found friendly aliens.

But they were actually Heather and Nolan.

And I asked Koo to
say her Captain Koo line for them,

but she ran away.

Ah, I see.

Maybe she doesn't wanna play anymore.

I think you'll have to ask Koo about that.

But, in the meantime,
I would love to meet your friends.

Would you be so kind as to introduce us?

Oh, yeah!

Stillwater, these are
my friends from school, Heather and Nolan.

Hello, Heather.

Hello, Nolan.

Welcome to my garden.

Would you all like to join me
until Koo returns?

What were you doing, Stillwater?

I was listening to the sound of the wind.

[chuckles] I like to close my eyes,

take a deep breath,

and sit quietly while the wind blows by.

[wind whistles]

Were you exploring over here?

Mmm. I see.

Karl, perhaps you can introduce Koo
to your friends

the same way you introduced them to me.

Everyone usually feels more at ease
once they have been acquainted.

Oh, I forgot.

Koo, this is Heather and Nolan.

Heather has a pet lizard named Clyde,
and Nolan likes trucks.

Hi, Koo. It's nice to meet you.

I'm wondering,
would all of you like to hear a story?

I'd like to hear one.

Pratima and Kiran were two sisters
who loved to dance.

Every night,
they put on their favorite record...

[Indian music playing]

...and danced for a cheering audience.

[music ends]

[chuckles] Pratima and Kiran!

[Stillwater] Both sisters loved to imagine
that they were on a stage

in front of a cheering crowd.

For Kiran, the applause of her family
was everything she needed.

But Pratima had a different idea

and decided to set up a surprise
for her sister.

Kiran, hurry! Put on your best sari,
and let's go!

Go? Go where?

You'll see! It's a wonderful surprise.
I know you're going to love it.

[Stillwater] Pratima's surprise
was to take her sister to the theater,

but not in the way she
would have expected.

The theater stage?

But shouldn't we take our seats
in the audience?

Not today, Kiran.

Get ready!

[Stillwater] Since the sisters
had often talked about dancing

in front of a big audience,

[Indian music playing]

Pratima was excited to surprise Kiran
with exactly that.

And Kiran was certainly surprised.

But instead of dancing along,
Kiran felt overwhelmed.

[Karl] That's having lots of feelings
at once. I remember.

[Stillwater] You're right, Karl.

[Stillwater] So, Kiran did the only thing
she could think of to do at that moment.

[audience clapping]

She ran far away.

What's wrong, Kiran?

We've always
dreamed of performing onstage,

so I thought you'd love this surprise.

I was surprised.

And I do want to
perform on a stage one day,

but someday,

when I'm ready.

And today, I wasn't ready.

I'm sorry I pushed you onstage
before you felt ready.

I think I know how to make it up to you.

[Indian music playing]

[Stillwater] That evening,
the sisters did perform their dance.

But this time, it was once again
just for their family.

And it was their best performance yet.

That was a good story.

I'm so glad you liked it, Nolan.

Did the sisters ever
perform on a real stage again?

Hmm. What do you think, Heather?

I think they did.

But this time,
they probably talked about it first,

so there wouldn't be any surprises.

Koo, when I asked you
to say your Captain Koo line,

did I make you feel like Kiran did

when she wasn't ready
to be in front of all those people?

I had fun with you,

but new friends made my tummy
feel mixed and jumbled.

I felt like that at the rocket ship.

I wanted to play with Karl and Koo,
but I'd never met Koo before,

so I didn't know what to do.

I'm sorry. I was so excited
for us all to explore space together.

Do not worry, Karl.

We're all introduced now.
And I like your friends.

Did you really escape a meteor shower?

They came after us, but Comet Karl
hit the speed, and we got away.

- Whoa.

All of space will be found
by Captain Koo's brave crew.

A sh**ting star's headed right for us.

[Karl imitating machine noises]

we must go out into space
and be very brave.

- [chuckling]

[all laughing, cheering] Whoo-hoo!

Huh? Oh. Sure.

Nice toss, Addy.

Now watch this.

You know what that means.

[both chanting] Two-point dance!

He's usually amazing at this game.

like we always do.

He was acting kind of strange.

I mean, he wasn't even watching
when we made those great shots.

[chuckling]

Ah. Perfectly fine, Addy.

Hello, Maya.

It seems like your bodies are here,
but your heads are somewhere else.

Is there something on your minds?

Something really weird
happened this morning, Stillwater.

And we can't stop thinking about it.

Mmm.

Tommy loves disc golf.
And he's really good at it.

But today, he called it a dumb game
and just left.

That does seem a bit odd.

Why don't we have a cup of tea

and think about
what could have made him do that?

You say that you think Tommy
acted differently today.

What else did you notice?

Well, he seemed kind of quiet.

Most of the time,
he's loud and lots of fun.

And he wasn't really
paying attention to the game. Or to us.

I've never seen him be rude.
But he sure was today.

Hmm. You know, there are times
people have things going on in their life

that we know nothing about.

That can make it difficult to understand

why they might act
in a way we're not used to.

- [slurps]
- What do you do when that happens?

That is a good question, Maya.

I have a story
that may help us to answer it.

[students chattering]

Once, there was a teacher
who loved teaching

and looked forward to
the start of each day.

[Stillwater] But, from time to time,
her enthusiastic students

were too much for her to handle.

[sighs]

Students, please!

[chattering stops]

Now, take your seats
and begin with silent reading.

Emphasis on silent.

She sure is grumpy today.

Yeah, I like her better when she's nice.

[Stillwater] That day, after school,

those same two students
were walking through town

and were surprised to see their teacher.

[Maya] That would be a surprise,
to see your teacher out in the real world.

It's Mrs. O'Brien!

[gasps] What is she doing here?

[Stillwater] The students
had never thought about

what their teacher did
outside of the classroom.

If she sees us, she's gonna yell at us
just like she did in class today.

- [giggling, chattering]
- [Stillwater] As she drew closer,

the students began to hear something,
and it sounded familiar.

[chattering continues]

[student 2] Whoa!
Look at all those babies.

They sound the way we do
before school starts.

Yeah, no wonder
she's a little grumpy sometimes.

[Addy] What did the students do,
Stillwater?

[Maya] Oh, I hope
they started being nicer to their teacher.

[Stillwater] Well, the next morning,

the students were gathered
in the classroom...

[chattering]

...laughing and talking as usual.
But this morning...

- Students!
- [shushes]

Well.

[gasps] Thank you.

[Stillwater] This simple act of kindness

turned her tired frown
into a grateful smile.

Once the students found out
that their teacher worked hard at school

and at home,

it was a lot easier for them to understand
why she was grumpy sometimes.

And once they knew,
it wasn't hard to help her feel better.

Hmm. Maybe we should try to find out
why Tommy was acting different today.

We could always just ask him.

That would be better than
hiding behind a tree. [chuckles]

[all sipping]

Hey, Tommy.

Hey.

Sorry about the disc golf thing.

I just didn't feel like playing today.

It's okay. I'm sorry for teasing you.

Are you okay, Tommy?

[sighs] Not really.
My grandma died yesterday.

She's been sick for a while.

[sobbing] I'm really gonna miss her.

I'm sorry.

[sniffles]

[sighs]

I like those flowers.

My mom told me they're called dandelions.

My grandma liked them too.

I know they're just weeds,
but I used to pick them for her,

and she always said
they were prettier than a bunch of roses.

And when they turned into puff ba*ls,
we would blow on them and make wishes.

I wish she was still here.

I should go help my mom now.
We're having people over tomorrow.

That explains why Tommy
was acting so strange today.

He's really sad,
and that makes me sad too.

I didn't know what to say.

I was afraid I'd say the wrong thing
and make him feel even worse.

Me too, but I'm really glad we came.

Yeah.

I just wish there was
something else we could do, you know?

To show him we're there for him.

I have an idea.

So, these were his grandmother's
favorite flowers, you say?

Yeah, Tommy said she loved them
even more than a bunch of roses.

Do you think they'll help, Stillwater?

Addy and I aren't sure what we should do.

I believe you should do
just what you're doing.

Every small gesture of kindness
helps to ease the hurt.

And maybe you can invite him
to play disc golf again tomorrow.

Really? Wouldn't he want to, I don't know,
be with his family?

Perhaps, but a little bit of normal
might also be nice during hard times.

Try inviting him to do
the things you always do together.

We can do that. [chuckles]

They're dandelions,
your grandma's favorite.

A little better.
Everyone has been so nice.

People have been dropping in all morning,
telling me stories about my grandma.

There's so much about her
that I never knew.

Like, she was the first woman
in our family to go to college.

It's nice that you could find out
about some of those things

from other people who loved her.

Yeah, it is nice.

And thank you for remembering
my grandma's favorite flowers.
