There's so much to show you at our beach.

Last time we went,
I had to carry all my toys by myself.

But not this time.
We can carry everything together.

There's a lot to pack.
Shovels, bucket and a kite.

What else do we need?

Looks like that's everything, except Addy.

[sniffles]

How are you feeling, Addy?

Mom and Dad think
I should stay home today. [sniffles]

Maybe we could go another time.
When you're feeling better.

W-What? N-No way.

The beach isn't going anywhere.

We've been planning this trip for days.

I want Koo to enjoy her first time
at our beach.

Me too.

I don't like missing out,
but it's important that I get better.

Go and have fun, and tell me all about it

[Addy sniffles]

We'll make sand butterflies,
and look for treasure,

and splash in the water.

I was just thinking about Addy.
I wish she could be here with us.

[Karl] There's the water.

[Koo] Mmm, salt air and sea breeze.
The warm sand between my toes.

and it feels very refreshing.

Look, our butterfly,
flying with her family.

A garden of sand.

Whoa! Good one.

Michael, would you like to make one?

I don't really feel like it now.

I mean, it's really more of an Addy thing.

Perhaps we could try something else.
How about flying a kite?

[Karl] We'll get ready to throw it.

- [Karl] Run!
- [Stillwater laughs] Go, Michael.

You need to run faster.

[inhales sharply] We need Addy.
She always gets the kite up when she runs.

Did you want to try flying again?

Sorry, Stillwater.

Today just isn't what we had in mind
for Koo.

Mmm. It is certainly different.

And it's not fair we're here having fun
while Addy's stuck at home.

But are you having fun?

- Not really.
- It was fun at first, but not anymore.

The beach is so nice.

I love exploring the shore,
but my friends seem sad.

Maybe we should just go home.
We can come back another day.

Hmm. This is a problem.

Do we leave the beach, and see Addy?

Or stay at the beach, but miss Addy?

Before we decide,
will you listen to a story?

- [Karl] Mm-hmm.
- [Koo] Sure.

[Michael] Okay.

[Stillwater] In a small desert town,
a master builder and his apprentice

were building a house for a young,
growing family.

[grunts]

Over the next several days,
the workers built a strong foundation

for the house to settle on.

Mm-hmm.

[Stillwater] They built thick walls
to keep the house cool in the summer

and warm in the winter.

[trowel scraping]

They built a sturdy roof
to keep out spring rains and winter snow.

[grunts]

Until, at last, the day came
when the builders would plaster the walls

and finish the house.

But the Master
had one last thing left to do.

Good health.

Good friends.

Good rest.

Now, we can finish.

Uh, Master, be careful.
You're covering up your drawings.

Indeed, I am.

But why?
Then the family will never see them.

True, but the friendly wishes I gave
to the family will always stay with them.

It feels good to know that,
whether they ever know it or not.

[Stillwater] As he thought about it,

the Apprentice started to see
what his Master meant.

May I help you paint, Master?

Is this really our house?

It's a beautiful house.

Good health. Good friends. Good rest.

[giggles]

The builders made all those drawings
for the family,

even though the family never saw them.

They did.

How do you think you would feel
if you were the one drawing?

I guess I'd feel happy.

I mean, if I cared enough
to do something nice,

the family may not know it, but I would.

Can we send friendly wishes to Addy?
Will that make her feel better?

That's hard to say, Karl, but it might
help you feel better about Addy.

I'd like you all to try something with me.

[seagulls squawking]

I'd like you all to close your eyes.

Now, let's take a slow,
deep breath into our belly.

Filling it all the way up.

And then we'll breathe out slowly.

[exhales heavily]

Next, I'd like for you to picture Addy
in your mind.

I'm imagining Addy playing her guitar,
while I play my xiao.

I'm picturing Addy here at the beach.
Making sandcastles.

Addy is at home.

She's baking something yummy.
It tastes really good.

I see Addy here too.
Splashing in the water and laughing.

Let me ask you,
how do your hearts feel right now?

- Warm and fuzzy.
- Mine too.

Now, let's take one last deep breath in...

[inhales sharply] ...and out.

I feel better now.

It's like Addy's here with us,
even though she's not.

That's because we have Addy in our hearts.

Right, Stillwater?

I think so, Karl.

What will we do now?
I don't feel sad anymore.

Will we still go home?

Before we left for the beach,
Addy told us to have fun.

So, I think we should.

[Karl] I found a purple shell.

Look, Michael.

- [Michael] Nice find.
- [laughs]

[Koo giggles]

[Stillwater] Ah.

- [Karl, Koo laughing]
- All filled up.

- [laughing]
- [Koo giggles] Cool.

[Karl] Dump!

Hope these butterflies don't fly away.

- [laughing]
- Look out, Stillwater.

- Watch out for the wave.
- [grunts]

- [Karl] We saved you.
- [Stillwater giggles]

- How are you feeling, Addy?

Did you feel our wishes we sent?

I'm not sure, Karl,
but I do feel a little better.

So, we brought the beach to you.

[chuckles] I'm glad you are enjoying it.

Gardening is one of my favorite things
to do.

[Maya] Our tomatoes
and strawberries are almost ripe.

Some will be ready to pick
in a day or two.

I rescued Stillwater from a space monster?

My ginormous robot helped.

So, one day, when we were exploring
the yard,

- we heard a cry for help.
- [Maya, Abby chuckling]

Morning, Addy. Want some breakfast?

Later. First I have to see
how my garden is doing.

[Addy screams]

What's wrong, Addy?

There are holes everywhere.

Good morning, everyone.

- Uh-oh.
- How's our garden doing?

[screams] What happened?

[Karl] Something put holes in your garden.

Addy, it's ruined!

It's not that bad, Maya.
Maybe we can fix it.

Let's just try to stay calm and think.

Come on, breathe out the butterflies
with me. [exhales deeply]

Five. [inhales]

Four. [inhales]

Three. [inhales]

Two. [inhales]

One. [inhales]

You're right, Addy. It's not that bad.

Some critter just dug up a few
of our pepper plants.

They didn't even eat the peppers
off the plants,

so maybe we can just replant them.

Okay. But we also need to find a way
to make sure that pest stays away

from our garden forever.

There.
That should scare whatever did this away.

- I hope it's enough shiny ribbons.
- Hopefully.

If that doesn't scare it off,
my monster drawing will.

I think our strawberries
are just about ripe.

One more day
and we'll have our first harvest.

I'm going to make
a delicious strawberry pie.

It might have to be a little hand pie.

There's only about three berries
that are almost ready.

[laughing]

Hey, Addy, I found a strawberry.

[gasps] Karl!
Did you just pick that strawberry?

It's not ripe yet. We've been waiting
weeks for it to get just right!

I didn't pick it, I promise!

I found it on the ground like this,
with a chomp in it.

[Addy gasps] Oh, no. Look at our garden.

[Maya] Something dug it up again.

[Addy] And ate some of our plants.

All that work for nothing.

It'll be okay, Maya.

Let's just stay calm
and breathe out the butterflies again.

Not this time, Addy. I have a better idea.

Let's catch that critter in the act

and make sure it goes away
and never comes back.

How can we do that?

I'm not sure,
but I bet Stillwater would know.

Let's go ask him.

We can't just leave the garden.

The critter might come back
and finish it off.

Don't worry.

- Me and ginormous robot will guard it.
- [robot sounds]

Our garden will be safe now.

Come on. Let's go see Stillwater.

Hi, Stillwater.

Hello.
Have you girls begun harvesting yet?

No. Our plants aren't quite ready.
But we have a bigger problem.

Yesterday some critter dug up our garden.

And today, it not only dug it up,

but it chomped on a whole bunch
of our almost-ripe fruit.

Oh, dear. I'm sorry to hear that.

I know how frustrating that can be.

Why don't critters eat your vegetables,
Stillwater?

Well, Maya, sometimes they do.

But I am also fortunate
to live close to the forest.

The creatures that visit in my yard
get most of the food they need from there.

[sighs] I wish whatever
has been visiting Addy's yard would leave

and get their food from there too.

We tried to scare it away
with some shiny cloth we hung up.

But that didn't work.

Do you have any ideas, Stillwater?

Hmm. There is one thing to try,

and I think it might be best explained
with a story.

A long time ago, in a faraway land,
there stood a magnificent tree.

The tree was the tallest in the forest.

And from its top branch,
one could see the entire forest below.

[hawk squawks]

The Mighty Hawk
claimed this high branch as his own and,

from his perch, he would watch over
all the creatures of the forest.

Hawk sat on the branch from day to night,

to day to night...

until he grew tired
and left in order to sleep.

But the moment
the Mighty Hawk left the branch,

the Noble Owl would fly in
to claim the branch for herself.

And there she would sit from night to day,

to night to day, watching...

until she too, grew tired
and had to leave.

- They argued over the branch...
- [owl hoots]

...on and on through day and night...

[birds squawking]

Until at last, they decided
they must figure out

who the branch belonged to,
once and for all.

They agreed to let the Wolf,
who was very wise,

make the choice for them.

Wolf, we need your help.

Please tell us,
who owns the tallest branch in the tree?

Hmm... It seems you both want all
and nothing.

All for you and nothing for the other.

Why do you want the tallest branch,
Mighty Hawk?

I need it to keep watch
over the forest all day.

And why do you want the tallest branch,
Noble Owl?

I need it to keep watch
over the forest all night.

Then I think you have your answer.

Hmm. I think we can make this work.

Yes, I think we can.

[Stillwater] Now that they understood
each other, the answer was simple.

Mighty Hawk
would sit on the branch during the day,

while Noble Owl slept soundly
in a hollow of the tree.

Noble Owl
would sit on the branch at night,

while Mighty Hawk
rested in his nest below.

With this arrangement,
both got exactly what they wanted.

And it remains that way to this day.

Both the Hawk and the Owl
thought they owned the tree branch.

But it turns out
there was enough room for both of them.

They had to learn to coexist.

To live side by side in a shared space
where they both belonged.

So, I guess the animal
that is eating our veggies

does belong in Addy's backyard.

But does it need to eat our fruits
and vegetables?

[chuckles] Maybe not your fruits
and vegetables, but she does need to eat.

There must be some way for the critter
and us to coexist.

To live together,
without our garden getting destroyed.

Maybe, instead of trying to scare it away
from our garden,

we could build it its own garden?

That is a great idea, Maya. Let's do it!

All done.

[animal chitters]

[squirrel chitters]

I believe we finished just in time.

[chuckles] You have a visitor.

And it looks like
she's brought her family.

[gasps] It's so cute!

Our mystery nibbler
was a sweet mama ground squirrel.

[Addy] I think she really loves
the garden we made for her.

[Maya] And her babies love it too.

[sighs] I'm glad we found a way
to all share this together.

[chuckles] Me too.
