- Say what?

- He's the dude that invented the IQ test,

to work out who was smart and who wasn't.

You wanna know why?

- Uh, you're probably gonna tell me anyway.

- He made a whole heap of people do a test.

Most did okay, not great, not bad,

but somewhere in the middle.

A small number of people did brilliantly.

So they're at the extremely brainy end of things.

Then there's people like you, who bores down.

They go to the other end of the curve.

- Uh, what, me?

- The thick end, Heath, you can't escape.

- Yeah, that's my story all over, thick and thick.

[machine clicking)

[Heath sighs)

[bell rings)

- Heath.

Oh, we might as well talk in here

since everyone else is going.

- Aha, so you and Savin,

playing teachers pet again today, are we?

- You know what, Ryan, you've got a, um,

really big zit,

just there.

Yeah, yeah you might wanna do something about that.

[Matt laughs)

- So, Heath, just wanted to check in

and see how things are going for you.

- Oh yeah, things are going great, excellent.

- You sure?

I thought there might be something up,

because you're about that far from certain failure.

And in my experience, there are kids who are failing,

because they're too busy messing about,

and then there are the kids who are messing about,

because they're failing.

Maybe they're struggling,

because they're too embarrassed to ask for help.

And if we didn't have school,

- I swear I saw it.

It was kind of yellow and gray,

and it was freaking out.

[bird squawks) - There!

On the second branch. - Yup, it's a bird.

- [Fly] Aw, there's something wrong with it.

- It wanted me to get it.

- Up you go.

- Well, maybe not me exactly, but someone.

- It named who it wanted to rescue it.

- I'll go. - Don't climb up Matt.

If you climb up, it scares him.

You need something that he can perch on.

You're the tallest.

- Hang on, where's Heath?

We need to get this on camera.

- He was up earlier checking the surf report at Green Knob.

- Heath wouldn't have been stupid enough

to go out there before school.

- No, so I'm sure he's hiding under his bed.

- Go grab his camera, Fly, he won't mind.

- [Perri] A little more to the left, Edge.

- Did you want to do it?

- [Perri] Well, you're nowhere near it.

- Um, it's to nine, people.

[camera clatters)

- Did you hear that?

It's time for school.

- The birdie's not coming to school.

- [Edge] Oh sorry, Heath.

- It's okay.

[bird squawks) Ow!

What'd you do that for?

- [Fly] 'Cause he shouldn't be here.

- Fly, I know you're angry,

but can you just take a peek.

Just check that he's okay.

- Hmm, it's obviously someone's pet.

Maybe it escaped a while ago,

so it's either hungry, thirsty.

Let's try and give it some water.

Just drop some into its beak.

- Can you just show me?

- Honestly, Perri, you're such a wuss.

See? - Morning, all.

- [Fly] Take him back.

- Well, maybe since you know how to do it,

you should just keep going.

- Can someone from each group please bring me the results

from last week's survey?

[bird squawking) Probably also a good time

to remind you that tomorrow is D-Day

for the major assignment.

Maybe you can remind Heath that it's worth more

than half the marks for the term.

If he doesn't hand it in, it's a guaranteed F.

- I haven't checked the roll, today,

so I might run out of time and not get to do it at all.

[upbeat music)

You'll spend like two minutes on the assignment

then watch videos all night.

and the researching and scribbling?

- It's just something extra.

- Forget it, it's not up for donation.

You got another plan?

- No, I was just gonna leave it up to the universe,

'cause somehow things always work out.

- Worse plan I ever heard.

- Unless someone wanted to help me out at the last minute.

I know, 'cause I'm great at brainstorming.

to show how when you change the chemical input,

you get a resulting chemical change in the outcome.

It just came at me, out of nowhere.

And it headed straight for my face.

I don't understand how it got out.

and I know it's got a few behavior problems,

but it can be kind of sweet, too.

- It's not staying.

You're gonna have to make some posters,

ring up the radio station and list it

on the lost-and-found, whatever.

But that bird's home is not here.

[hip hop music)

and I definitely can't hand it in.

- [Fly] It's brilliant, Anna.

- [Bec] Yeah, excellent.

- Are you all right, Heath?

- Did you get finished?

- Yeah, sort of.

[Heath gags)

- Heath! - I'll skip my breakfast.

- [Fly] What's the matter?

Heath!

- [Bec] Oh, he's not a well boy.

Nah, 'cause the whole pint of taking today off was

to do some proper work on the assignment.

[phone rings) Yup.

I know, if I bring it in here,

I can do some during the boring bits, eh, multitask.

[bird squawks) [phone rings)

No, it's, uh, yellow and gray.

- [Perri] Hello there.

- [Heath] Hey, Bec.

- [Perri] What happened to you?

- [Heath] Pass me the ketchup, huh.

- Some of its feathers are missing.

- Hmm.

It's a plucker.

- You can shout that out.

I was with it all day.

The bird definitely has some emotional issues.

- Hmm, could be stress.

Sometimes they pluck when they're lonely,

and they wanna mate.

[bird squawks)

- [Matt] Perri?

[bird squawks)

- I didn't do anything.

- Something's got it going.

It's the fridge.

Edge, open the fridge again.

[bird squawks)

[all chuckling)

- Crazy bird. - How weird is that?

Why would it be terrified of the fridge?

- Jilly, you changed your mind.

- I did not such thing.

This is temporary accommodation only.

Mum wants it back in a week.

- [Perri] You're the expert.

- I'm cooking, in case you didn't notice.

Someone else can deal with what's its face.

- [Bec] Yeah, Waxhead [laughs).

- Hey, um, Matt, um, by any strange twist of fate,

- Yeah, I handed it in.

[bell rings)

- Do you know what this is about?

- Uh, yeah, maybe.

- Save it for the office, boys.

Would either of you care

to explain the startling similarity of the work?

- First off, this isn't Matt's fault.

It's entirely my fault.

- You stole Matt's assignment.

- Um-- - No, he didn't.

I gave it to him. - Yeah, gave it to me,

so I could get a [sighs), a sense of, of inspiration.

- Stop it, Heath. - Why?

Look you gave me your assignment,

'cause you felt sorry for me.

- Be that as it may,

he has done you both a disservice.

And cheating, in all its ugly forms,

will not be tolerated in this school.

Two weeks detention, rubbish collection for three weeks,

and you each give a tour to the year-sevens

about the perils of cheating.

I'm also expecting Mr. Simmonds will be deducting

significant points from the only thing you do seem

to care about, points each from your surfing scores.

[solemn music)

- I should probably make you two walk.

I suppose I'll give you a lift.

- I'm walking.

[solemn music)

- Look, I know it was stupid to copy.

I figured that out, but...

Look, that's why I pretended to be sick.

You know, I know you need the surfing points, but science?

- I was gonna take Matt's groper research,

you know, those fishes at sea.

I thought if I could tie it all together with some footage,

maybe I could get some marks back for him.

- You could always write about it.

My assignments always suck.

It's not easy, like it is for you guys.

- It can't be that bad, Heath,

or you would've heard way before this.

Maybe it's just a confidence thing.

You know, I'm great at getting people to explain things,

so I don't have to read it.

and when that doesn't work, I guess,

I guess, you cheat,

or go to an alternative school.

You know, you tie two sticks together and call it an essay.

- Two sticks?

in the, uh [whistles), the reproductive department.

- So it couldn't breed.

- No, I guess not.

I could be wrong, but, uh, some baby gropers would say

that I was right.

I don't know.

Hell, what would I know?

- A fair bit, by the sound of it. [phone rings)

- Oh, you took pictures of Waxhead, too?

- Hello. - Oh yeah,

I had to finish off the roll.

- [Perri] It's so cute.

- Cool, I'll let him know.

Mr. Savin wants you to swing by the school

to talk to you about some assignment.

- This is like hundreds of babies

after years of them not producing at all.

- Yup, that's what I said in the assignment.

- What assignment?

You went ahead and made an assignment out

of the groper data?

- I was trying to get some marks back for you.

- And you included all the stuff

about there only being one male? And that when he carks it,

one of the females changes sex

and goes from brown to blue?

- And the fact

that the old guy's death might mean they start

to breed again?

Yeah, I got it all.

- I don't get how you can whip up something like this

in a day, but you struggle like mental

when it's an official assignment.

- Yeah, give me a groper to chop up,

I'll tell you how it works.

I'm never gonna understand it.
