- [Edge] It can be lonely at the top.

[g*n firing)

[dramatic indie music)

[stopwatch beeping)

Lonely because you have to prepared

to make the tough choices.

- [Coach] Edge, I want you to take the last kayak.

[dramatic indie music)

- [Edge] If you take your eye off the prize

for a minute and start making decisions based

on anything other than winning, well,

you might as well kiss that prize goodbye.

- Come on, Edge, what are you doing?

[dramatic indie music)

- Come on, Matt.

Just a little lapse in concentration'd do it.

Work up a wobble.

Pop a flat fire.

Hit a pothole and kiss the bitterment.

I'm not fussy which one.

[exciting indie music)

[brakes screeching)

[exciting indie music)

- Anything broken?

- I don't know.

- Is he all right?

- [Heath] Where does it hurt?

- [Matt] My arm.

- Edge.

Edge!

- At least it was a rehearsal.

- Yeah, but the way it feels at the moment,

I might not make the race at all.

- Aw, it'll be a wicked bruise, but it'll be fine.

- It's just for training, anyway.

It's not like we're getting any points

for going into this race.

- Okay, based on today's individual performance,

you guys need to make a race plan.

You'll be entered into the Surf Club endurance trials

as relay teams, so you need to figure out

who's gonna run which leg.

- Well, it's easy for the girls.

There's four of them, there's four legs.

What about us?

- You might not be able to compete.

- No thanks to you.

- Are you gonna go on about this forever?

'Cause-- - That's enough you guys.

If you can't do it civilly, then we'll decide for you,

which we might have to do if we want

to avoid World w*r III.

- Too easy.

Let 'em figure it out for 'emselves.

[upbeat rock music)

- Thanks.

[motorbike revving)

- Edge.

Special delivery.

- Oi! You lot.

The van won't unpack itself, come on.

- [Heath] You join a book club?

- It's mom's.

- The great Liv Cameron?

- Who's Liv Cameron?

- Only three-times Australia Women's Champion,

married to Ben Edgely, who surfed

the world tour circuit ten years running.

- They're about to launch her biography.

- So, Perri.

Do you wanna do the kayak or swim?

- How old do you reckon she is?

- I think she was when she had Edge.

- Hello, the race?

- Um, yep.

I'll do the swim.

- Aww, look.

He's so little and cute.

- So, Bec, did you know all this stuff

about her before, or did all the research happen

after you went all soft on Edge?

[giggling) [playful screaming)

- Bec! [laughing)

- Ahem.

- Hi.

Uh, we were just reading your mom's book.

So, instead of kindergarten, you went

on the world tour?

- Yeah, something like that.

- Do you remember any of it, or were you too little?

- You probably remember more about the, uh,

' tour, don't you?

- I wasn't there.

- Where were you?

- Um, with my grandparents.

- Was that weird, having your mom and dad

away having fun while you're stuck--

- I learned early that if you wanna win,

you can't let anything stand in your way,

including kids.

Having me around?

They tried it for a year, but

[laughs) too distracting.

Do you mind if I have a look?

- Oh!

- Yeah.

Thanks.

- Bec!

You have to get that book back.

In between those covers lie untold secrets

on how to

understand

your man.

[giggling) [screaming)

- It's still sore, but I reckon it'll be cool

if I stick to the bike leg.

Less demanding on the arms.

- Yeah, right!

After you did such a good job on the bike leg today?

What?

You don't like the truth?

- It's not the truth that's doing my head in, Edge,

it's the sound of your voice.

- Hey, I'm just saying I'm not gonna carry you, Matt.

- Hey, Edge, if you don't get your head

out your own backside, we won't have you

on the team at all.

- I couldn't care less if you two wanna buddy up.

I'm used to riding solo.

[sighs) Okay then.

All right.

That's what I'll do.

I'll enter as an individual.

Then at least I won't be piggybacking you two

over the finish line.

[melancholy indie music)

- All ready for the race tomorrow?

- Yep.

Gonna enter on my own.

[playful shouting)

They're just not focused.

And, I'm sick of carrying them.

- But that means that you won't have a support crew.

- No point having support if it's gonna stop you

from winning.

- [Heath] Woohoo! [water splashing)

[playful shouting)

[melancholy indie music) [waves crashing)

- Righty-o.

I need everyone's Surf Club raffle books

and the money, please.

- I've still got one left to sell.

- So?

- So, we're supposed to sell them all.

- Fly, somebody put a spell on you at birth.

Look, you're not gonna go to hell

if you have one ticket left.

- Well, Edge didn't sell any of his tickets.

Said fundraising wasn't on his priority list.

- Oh well, his loss.

No ticket, no chance of winning.

- What is a foosball anyway?

- [Matt] It's table soccer.

Yeah, you control two teams

of little dudes with sticks.

- [Girl] And this is something you want to win?

- [Anna] Everyone plays in Europe.

It's really fun.

- I didn't take your for a table soccer queen, Fly.

- Why are you guys only picking for two?

- Edge reckons he can do better without us.

- What? - [Anna] What?

- 'Cause Edge reckons he can do better without us.

- That's right.

I can.

You know, when it's just you,

no on can let you down.

- Yeah, but being on a team actually has some positives.

- Like what?

- Like they're there to help you

through the tough times.

- And they're there to celebrate

when you pull it all off!

- And corny as it sounds, it's kind of

about friendship, too.

- These aren't real friendships.

They're fishbowl friendships.

You know, if we'd met at school or,

or just on the street, we probably

wouldn't even notice each other.

We're together because we have to be.

As soon as this thing's over,

we'll have forgotten each other

in ten seconds flat.

[sorrowful blues music)

- Wow, Edge, tell us how you really feel.

[upbeat rock music)

- Is this the outcome you were expecting,

by letting the boys sort it out for themselves?

- Hah!

- Can't remember the last time Ed cracked a smile.

- Early 's?

- You two are getting just as bad.

- She's definitely been spending

way too much time with Edge.

- Do you reckon there's any truth

to what Edge said about the fishbowl friendships?

You reckon we'll stay in touch?

- Hmm, nah.

You know, I reckon you'll go back to King Island,

I'll be off on tour.

We'll probably email each other

once in a while, but we'll have less and less

to say since our lives are so different.

Years from now, I'll be in a jacuzzi,

in the Swiss Alps, and I'll think,

"whatever happened to Matt Leyland?"

Hey, Matt.

Matt!

I wasn't being serious.

Dude, of course we'll stay friends.

Matt!

Hey, dude!

I wanna be friends.

Matt!

- I'll think about it.

- [laughing) You idiot.

- You too.

- [Teammate] Good work, good work.

[crowd applauding)

- I guess we'll have to settle for a silver medal.

- Or bronze.

- Well, you're competing against kids

who do nothing but endurance events.

- Yeah.

If it'd been in the water, we'd have whipped butt.

- So who's gonna be our first team?

Girls or boys?

- Aw, yeah!

- You did it!

- Am I hallucinating, or did I really come third?

- We beat Edge, man,

and after the last couple of days,

that's a big enough win for me.

- Groups can't place against an individual.

- Who cares, we beat 'em.

- Go, Bec, go!

[girls cheering)

- Bec!

Good job, Bec, well done!

- You all right?

[edgy indie music)

- That's the last one home.

What's happened to Edge?

- Not only has he come last out of all of us,

he's come last out of everyone.

Better stay out of his way tonight.

- [Announcer] Okay, the winner of, uh,

the foosball raffle is green ticket

number , initials D.E.

- Edge won!

- I thought Edge didn't buy any tickets.

- He didn't, it was the last one in my book!

I bought it for him!

- You bought a ticket for Edge?

- I thought it might cheer him up!

- [Announcer] [mumbles) number ,

we must have the ticket to award the prize.

- Come on, Fly.

We're the proud owners of an excellent table soccer set.

- Ugh, I must have left it at home.

- I can have a talk to them,

see what I can organize.

[edgy indie music)

- He went into the run fifth place.

- Yeah, but then he overtook me about half way,

so if he'd fallen over or hurt himself,

I should've seen him.

- Unless he got lost.

- Okay, guys, we're gonna back track looking

for him, if there's still no sign,

we'll have to organize a search party.

- Um, I don't mean to be smart, but

maybe it's worth calling home?

Well, if Edge knew he wasn't going to win,

he coulda gone home in a stink.

- So call home.

Any word, let me know on the mobile.

Let's go.

[edgy indie music)

- Face it, Edge.

You've blown it.

You really screwed up, big time.

But you're a survivor.

And you're gonna get through this.

- The flag!

- What flag?

- [Heath] One of the flags got knocked down.

- What do you mean?

- Uh, the fourth flag.

It got pushed over just before I went passed it.

I just remembered.

- Did you put it back up again?

- I, I um--

- I did.

It was down when I got there, so I stuck it back up.

- And had Edge already gone through by then?

- I think so.

- So he could've missed the turn off altogether?

- All right, Deb, I'm at the intersection now.

No sign of him.

All we can do is hope that he was smart enough

to stay put once he realized he was lost.

[water splashing)

[edgy indie music)

- [Edge] Okay, so.

Maybe I'm gonna do now what I should've done before,

which is to stay put and let them find me.

Because they'll be out there looking for me.

Won't they?

- No sign of him on the track.

I think you should take the rest of 'em home.

- Yep, will do.

- We can't just leave him here all night.

- Look, Simmo's talking to the SCS to see

whether they should keep on searching

or come back in the morning.

Either way, you guys are not gonna be involved.

[melancholy acoustic music)

Come on! There's nothing you can do.

[melancholy acoustic music)

[vacuum whirring)

- Um.

I made some dinner for you.

Some pumpkin soup and a salad.

- No thanks, Jilly.

I'm really only interested in a shower at the moment.

- Me too.

- I think I'll wait and eat with Edge.

- We'll have some later.

Thanks, Jilly.

- Have you seen a raffle ticket, Jilly?

It's green.

- No, no I haven't, and I've cleaned the whole

of the downstairs today.

- You know they lost a whole hour of light,

because it took you so long to remember?

- Hey, you knew about the flag, too.

You didn't remember either.

- Yeah, but at least I picked it up.

- It's not about the flipping flag.

It's about the fact that you kicked him

off the team in the first place.

- You can't hang that on us, Fly,

it was his idea.

- Exactly!

But it only takes someone with half a brain

to see that Edge has pushed you guys away

because there's no room for him.

If you get rejected from something,

sometimes you end up talking yourself

into believing you wouldn't want it anyway.

It's all right for you, Mr. Popularity,

and Mr. Brain Box.

But Edge is shyer than that.

- Edge?

Shy?

Angry, rude, sullen, self-centered, sure,

but a soft-centered chocolate?

- Edge might be confident as hell on the board,

but when it comes to people,

he's in way over his head!

Which is why he comes on all aggro

to cover it up!

[melancholy acoustic music) - Well.

Is this the part where you storm outta the room?

- I tried it once, and it didn't feel any good.

You know him.

I'm right, aren't I?

- Yeah.

You are.

[thunderous roaring)

[boys yelling)

- [Heath] Come on, that's wank.

Come on.

- [Matt] Yep, here we go.

- [Heath] Three, three!

- [Matt] Aw, that's it!

- [Heath] Come on.

- [Matt] There we go!

- [Heath] Easy as, easy as.

- [Matt] Come on, come on.

- Okay, come on, get on the board.

Get on the board.

- There we go, come on.

- Hey!

You guys. [boys whooping)

Oi! Over here.

- Aw, what do you call that?

Nothing, you got nothing.

- Oi!

- The goal-ah!

- Finally.

Hey give us a hand will ya?

- Sorry, Edge, no can do.

We gotta stick to our priorities,

keep our eyes on the prize.

- Come on. [laughing)

- Come on! [boys jeering)

- [Heath] Oi!

[melancholy folk music)

[vomiting)

- How did this happen, Edge?

How did you end up alone without a team to support you?

- Because

Matt and Heath

didn't want me on their team.

- And that's because?

- 'Cause we had a fight.

- Because?

- Because they're idiots.

- [buzzing) Try again.

- Because they don't like me.

- You can do better than this, Edge.

- Because

I didn't help Matt when he fell off the bike.

I was only thinking of myself

and winning.

[clapping)

You didn't bring anything to eat, did you?

[melancholy folk music)

[waves crashing) [seagulls cawing)

[Fly yawning)

- Morning!

- Morning.

You okay?

- Couldn't sleep.

- He'll be okay.

- I know.

[toe stubbing) - Ow.

That hurt.

[exciting indie music)

- I hope they accept it in that condition.

- Never know!

[cell phone ringing)

- Deb, yes.

Sorry, there's no news.

What I'm gonna do is, uh,

head back in to the SCS station,

see what the plan is.

[exciting indie music)

- You're packing up?

- We were just about to call you, mate.

Check it out.

[pinball machine plunking)

- Gah! Ripped off.

- Edge.

How did you get here?

- I heard a garbage truck this morning.

It was emptying bins at the top of the park,

I followed the noise and found my way here.

- Well thank god for that.

- Didn't think you'd be that worried.

- Oh, what, you thought we'd just

leave you out there to find your own way home?

- I don't know.

I mean,

I sorta did find my own way back

in the end, anyway.

- Come on.

Let's get you home.

- Dude!

I've still got one ball left.

- Just so you know,

we were all worried sick about you.

- That's kinda nice, I guess.

- How cold do you reckon it got last night?

- Not that cold.

But we weren't stuck out in the bush

in a Lycra tracksuit.

- Hi, Edge!

- Hi.

- I think we can all learn a lesson from this.

We need to be more careful not to let

the competition take over for looking

after each other's safety.

We can take this as a wake-up call.

- I'm feeling pretty awake.

- [Matt] Me too.

- Yeah, same here.

- So,

I'm sorry for not helping you

when you stacked on the bike.

It was a dud call.

- Don't worry about it.

- Yeah.

Anyway, I smell like a sewer.

[laughing)

I'm gonna go have a shower,

so yous don't evict me for air pollution.

- I've got something in the car

called a foosball table?

- [gasp) - [Matt] Hey!

- Which I believe you're responsible for.

- Wow, this is so weird.

When I was in the bush, I--

- What?

- Uh.

Nothing.

It's just--

- It's cool.

It was only a dollar, and I needed

to get rid of all my tickets.

I didn't really mean about the soccer, I--

anyway, thanks.

[upbeat rock music) So, who's up for a game?

- Yeah, I thought you'd never ask!

- How's about two-on-two?

- Any of you wanna be on my team?

- I'm on your team!

Heath's the worst foosball player in the world.

- I'll play with Heath, that way

I won't look so bad.

- Laugh it up, people, but you'll be crying soon enough.

- All right, let's play some foosball!

[group chattering)

- Legs, Matt!

Lift your legs, you know,

otherwise I can't get the ball through.

- Hey, Edge.
