- Mornings like this,
you almost get the feeling that the beach is your own.
Perfect break, no one around.
It's like nothing else exists.
Just you and the waves.
Then the weekend comes and everyone descends.
The toilets back up, the shops run out of pies,
people shake sand in your face
and you realize the beach isn't yours at all.
You're sharing it with twelve thousand others.
- Go!
Come on, guys.
Great work, guys, hit the sand fifty crunches.
Come on, let's go.
Let's get that heart rate up.
(chattering and laughing)
- Oi!
What are you doing?
- Guys, do you mind we're training here.
- Get lost!
- Did you hear what she said?
- What?
- We're training here.
- So?
- So, get lost.
- Eric, chill will you?
- You see those four flags poking out of the sand,
they're there for a reason.
- It's a free beach man, we can play where we want.
- Loser.
- Free beach, free to do what?
Kick your ball into someones head?
- Aren't they at our school?
- Fly reckons the one with the big mouth
was in her science class.
- Two chocolate, two vanilla and two chips.
- And the chicken salt?
- You know something?
Sorry about that.
- No worries, you new here?
- Yeah, been here about a week.
I'll go get it.
- Sixty, eighty, fifteen dollars.
Plus fifteen, twenty, seventy
fifteen dollars and seventy cents.
- Thanks.
- Thank you for the chicken salt.
- You're at Solar Blue, aren't you?
- Yeah.
- I just bought this new board,
and it's sorta not working for me.
I don't know whether it's me
or the board or what.
Would you mind taking a look?
- Wow, this is yours?
- Yeah, I bought it second hand from my uncle.
And I got this job so I could pay it off.
- Okay.
This is a retro board from the seventies.
Do you think he knows what he's handing over?
I mean, it's worth a fair bit.
- I don't think he cares really,
he just wanted to help me out.
- Well, how long did you say you've been surfing for?
- About a year.
Before I got this I just borrowed boards,
whatever I could get my hands on really.
- Okay, well look this is too heavy for you to learn on.
- I knew it wasn't right, what do I do now?
- Well, you need something lighter.
Look, why don't you come out with me
and you can check out some of our boards.
- Really?
That would be so cool.
When's a good time?
- Eric.
- Afternoons.
Tomorrow after school's good.
- Thanks, I really appreciate it.
- It's no problem.
(rock music)

of this massive tube and this guy drops in on him.
- Well, well, well.
- How's it going?
Outta your flags, are ya?
- Flags, is that what they were?
I thought they were goal posts.
- Just move on, will ya?
- Hey, what happens to wax heads
when they get hot below the collar?
Do they melt?
(engine roars)
- This guys is a jerk, what's his problem?
- He's just baiting you.
- Why?
- Because he can.
- Some of the locals around here
have more attitude than sense.
They don't surf, they just hang around and stir up trouble.
- What and we're supposed to just sit around and cop it?
- Steer clear of them.
The more you react, the worse it'll get.
- I'm going for a run before training, wanna come?
- Yeah.
- Hi, I was looking for Eric.
- He's gone for a run.
- Oh, okay.
He was gonna talk to me about my board.
- He should be back soon if you wanna wait.
- Nice board.
- Thanks.
- Mine's kind of a dinosaur.
- It's a nineteen seventy single fin, right?
- Yeah.
- Cool.
Bit of a plank though.
- That's what Eric said, he said
I'd be better with something lighter.
- A thruster, three fin.
They're heaps more maneuverable.
- That's what I need, I just don't get
any power off bottom turn.

- Not here, Freddie.
- Any Freddies here, boys?

your stuff up in the middle of our track.
- Why not?
- Because we were here first.
- Um, we've been living here for our whole life,
we've been here first.
- Just because you grew up here,
doesn't make this your beach.
- Of course it does!
- Locals were all boys, don't you forget it.
- Yeah and you tourists have been here for like five minutes

Hello, we live here in that house.
- Come on, guys.
- Give us a break.
Can't you just move along the beach a bit?

We do not need this kind of agro.
Especially not from locals.

- So, is that why you been doing too well against us?
Haven't got the cops to protect ya?
- I don't need the cops to take care of you two,
I've had you sorted out months ago.
- So, we put up this volleyball set, right?
And then they tell us that we have to move
like further up the beach.
- Yeah and we're like: "What, you own the joint, do ya?"
- Then they say something about
how we can't play in front of the break.
- Yeah, just like that.
- Hey!
What are you doing hanging around with them?
- Who I hang out with has got nothing to do with you.
- That guy's such a jerk.
- Yeah, he's also my brother.
- Troy's your brother?

- Eric. - What?
- It's okay, I know what he's like, he's a jerk,
but he's not always a jerk.
- Really?
It's just you know, every time I've been around him
or near him he's been a jerk.
- When he's on his own, he's okay.
But when he's with his mates.
- I know what you mean.
- What do you mean you know what she means?
- Sometimes with guys, the more there are of them,
the dumber they act.
- Exactly!
Plus Troy just doesn't like surfers.
- Even if his sister's one?
- Even worse if his sister's one.
- Oi, go back to where you came from!
- Stay off our beaches!
(scream)
- Are you all right?
- Yeah.
- [Jilly] Well, what is it?
- Tomato.
Rotten tomato by the smell of it.
- Well, you're gonna have to soak it, Rachel.
- Why me?
What did I do?
- It was probably meant for me, Jilly.
- What's going on?
- Rachel copped a tomato from a passing car.
- Bit of lettuce, some celery,
you'd make a great french salad.
Just tryna cheer you up.
- You all right?
- Yeah, I'm fine.
The guy who chucked this won't be if I catch him.
- Gets worse, I'm afraid.
I've just had a call, someone's making an official complaint
- What? Who?
One of the boys' parents,
Troy Anderson.
- Don't tell me, he's got a broken jaw
from talking too much?
- They claim he was attacked on the beach.
- Attacked? - What?
- And that the attack was unprovoked.
- He wasn't attacked, nobody even touched him!
This is a joke.
- I believe you, all right?
Problem is they're going to council
to try and have our permit revoked.
- They can't do that!
- What does that mean?
- It means we wouldn't be able to use
the beach anymore for training.
- That's not fair.
- I know.
I'm gonna talk to them, try and cool things down.
In the meantime, stay away from these guys.
- What if they approach us?
- Ignore them.
If in doubt, walk away.
This has gotta stop.

Yes, Fly?
- Can I have a word?
- I'm just about to make a call.
Okay, let's hear it.
- It's not fair!
- What's not fair?
- The way you're treating them,
like it's their fault.
- Hang on.
- All you're worried about is the council
revoking our permit because Troy's parents
ring up and complain.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Back that truck up slowly.
- You believe them, don't you?
They didn't start this.
- I know that and I'm as angry about it
as you are, but it's not as simple as
who's right and who's wrong.
- No, but isn't it should be?
- Fly, one of life's big lessons
is learning to turn the other cheek.
If we don't handle this properly,
they're the ones that will suffer.
- You really think the council
could stop us using the beach?
- I won't let that happen.
I've lived here a long time,
I know a lot of the people.
- I feel so useless.
I mean, I wish there was something I could do.
- There is.
Keep them focussed.
Stop them from concentrating on this too much.
- I'll try.
- You'll do better than that.
- Five.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
Nine.
Ten!
- Ten?
You should be getting up to fifteen on those.
- Yeah, I'm working on it.
- Good news, guys.
I spoke to Sim earlier and he said
it was okay for you to swap that board.
If your friend's still interested?
- Yeah, she'll be stoked!
Hey, let's go down to the cafe and tell her.

- Look who's here.
- Great.
- Eric, maybe this news can wait.

- Simmo said not to react and we won't.
- Hey, Eric!
How's the vegetable rugby going?
I heard one of your friends
got caught up in those oncoming tomatoes.
