02x07 - Bares All: Starvation, Snakes and Strife

Post by bunniefuu »

Man: Everything
here is out to get you.

[ crying ]

[ groans ]

narrator: 12 survivalists,
all complete strangers,

took on the toughest
challenges of their lives.

Yeah!

Narrator: One man and
one woman were paired up

with the sole aim
to survive 21 days

in some of the harshest
environments on the planet.

I want off. I want
off this island.

Narrator: They had...

We are in a state
of true starvation.

[bleep]

all over the globe,

they faced physical
and mental trauma

that no one could
have ever anticipated.

I've never had
something so small mess

with my head so [bleep] much.

Narrator: Now featuring exclusive
behind-the-scenes footage

of each couple as they struggle

to survive the
21-day challenges...

To be honest, I'd eat
a dead body right now.

Oh, god. I would, too.

...The survivors
and their loved ones

reveal a unique perspective

on the everest of
survival challenges.

Our first night was
absolutely brutal.

Narrator: This special episode
sheds new light on the highs...

Amazon fire!

Narrator: ...And lows...

Sabrina: You want
to see [bleep] [bleep]

'cause I can be an [bleep]

vincent: I know you can.

...Of the most
demanding and authentic

survival series ever created...

I'm not doing so well.

As...

captions paid for by
discovery communications

when I first got to
fiji, I was just in awe.

I've never even taken
a tropical vacation,

so it was unreal.

Vincent: Seeing
bolivia for the first time,

I truly was blown away.

I knew it would be beautiful.

I didn't know it
would be so stunning.

Madagascar, it was beautiful,
but it was also deadly.

Everything is brown
and dead and lifeless.

And that concerns me.

Laura: My first
impression of the amazon

was that everything
was so alive.

All these different plants,
all these different insects,

animals I'd never seen before.

It was like getting to
the top of a roller coaster.

I was so excited to see

what it was like
inside of the jungle.

Cass: Belize was very impressive

but a little intimidating
at times, also.

Total different place
than I'd ever been.

Fernando: Seeing the
malaysian jungle for the first time,

it was intimidating, and I
knew I had my hands full.

I feel like this jungle's like
a living, breathing entity.

That jungle wanted to
eat me up, and I felt that.

I wasn't there as a tourist.
I wasn't there sightseeing.

I was there for a very
specific purpose -- to survive.

Let's get this
party started, eh?

Narrator: As their
21-day challenge began,

each survivalist made their
way through the harsh conditions,

meeting their partner, a
complete stranger, naked.

Oh, man. Like this
isn't awkward at all.

Just a little bit.

Hey. I'm eva.

I'm jeff. Good
to meet you, jeff.

Nice to meet you.

Just hanging out in madagascar?

Naked, right?

We exchanged names

and then I immediately
forgot the guy's name

because, you know,
I'm thinking about the fact

that I have no clothes on.

[ both laugh ]

a.K.: I'm not used to
meeting people in the nude,

and it's as awkward
as you would think.

Hey, how's it going?

Hi. Tyler. Nice to meet you.

I'm a.K. Awesome.

I see you brought
the twig and berries.

You got the ladies along,
so we should be good.

[ laughs ]

meeting samantha
naked for the first time,

it was just incredibly,
incredibly awkward.

Hello.

Hi. So, how are you doing?

I'm good. I'm good.

It definitely made for
some awkward banter

for the first few minutes.

So, we're in malaysia.

Welcome to the jungle.

Um...

It's... Not so bad.

Yeah.

We just kind of, like, talked
nonsensically about nothing.

So far, so good.

Yeah, what can go wrong? Right.

You ready to rock this?

I am ready to kick
this jungle in the butt.

Narrator: With the awkwardness

of meeting their naked
partners behind them,

another issue arises.

What are they
willing to do to make it

through the cold, cold night
in their primitive environment.

No, there was
definitely no spooning.

I don't spoon at all.

I'm not a touchy-feely
person and -- no.

No spooning.

Oh, my god. This
place is off the hook.

Our first night was
absolutely brutal.

I didn't think either one of
us expected it to be so cold.

Eva: [bleep]

what is with this stuff?

Jeff: It doesn't want to ignite.

I had promised my wife that
there would be no cuddling,

no body heat exchange going on.

[bleep] aw, are you
freaking kidding me?

Being his wife, it was
kind of difficult to handle,

but I trust jeff.

Jeff is an amazing guy.

I was just concerned
if the woman would try

to attack him in the middle
of the night or something.

He has a really wonderful wife

and he's very
serious about that.

And so there was no
cuddling or spooning

or snuggling
together whatsoever.

It made that first
night pretty damn cold.

[ chuckles ]

narrator: As each day began,
there was another reality

of men and women cohabiting
together to be considered.

Vincent: You know, men
will be men in the morning

and you're gonna have
some hydraulics going

if you have to urinate.

And I had that
happen a few times.

And to me, it was no --
well, maybe it was a big deal,

but it was no big deal
metaphorically speaking, anyway.

Alana: You know, the
morning occurrences

was something that I
was concerned about.

I thought I was
gonna be waking up

to more than
firewood next to me.

But I was trying not to look
down as much as I could.

Believe it or not, in 21
days, I never got an erection.

That never was an
issue, fortunately.

Is morning wood an issue?

Well, usually I was
up before anyone else

was gonna get up anyhow,

and I'd just go off
and take care of it

before it becomes
an issue for anyone.

[bleep]

yes, it possibly
might have happened.

[ chuckles ]

my wife's gonna flip out.

Edit that. Don't
put that in there.

Narrator: Soon after the
survivalists got to know each other,

they faced what could
be their toughest task --

finding food.

Did you see that?
See the [bleep] beaver?

A [bleep] beaver just looking
at me right here by the bank.

Narrator: In these
conditions, it's all about

getting as much
protein as possible.

Yeah, buddy. Yeah, baby!

Look at that. Yes!

In the wild, there are creatures

you have no choice
but to feed on...

These are snake eggs.
It's a string of them.

This is, like, the
ultimate energy shot.

...No matter what it is.

Fernando: Now, that

is a beautiful,
beautiful butterfly.

I could eat that.

Anything that
crawled in front of us,

it'd be a quick conversation.

"can we eat that?
Is that edible?"

got something.

A good, meaty grasshopper.

Do want half of this, seriously?
Or are you not feeling it?

Well, I do, but it's too little.

And I had the grub yesterday.

Cooked grubs taste like bacon.

It was actually wonderful.

I got us another
snack. Cass: What?

A lizard.

Cass: Shannon
would eat anything.

I'm not a big fan.

I'd rather be hungry.

Did you rip his head off?

Yeah, I ate it.

[ laughs ]

oh, it tastes like hell.

We didn't have much of
a choice on what we ate.

Alien grub.

It tastes like somebody
left a urine sample

out in the sun or something.

Jeff is all about
eating gross things.

Frickin' nasty, man.

I mean, I kind of
want to eat him.

I was starting to think

that maybe the
grosser they were,

the more he liked eating them.

There's a definitely
smell going on here.

And that doesn't
raise your concern

that maybe it's got
some weird toxins in it?

You know...

Stinks?

It's an inappropriate color.

Bon appetit.

Jeff: You know, I
know people at home

that probably are thinking,
"man, that's gross."

you know, like, "I can't
believe you ate that."

juicy!

An expl*si*n of juice.

But I was happy to do it.

Every bug I saw, I was
viewing that as energy.

That's disgusting.

Sabrina: When you're in that
situation where your body wants food

and it really doesn't
matter what that food is,

it doesn't cross your
mind how gross it might be.

This is a parrot head.

Or, as vince would probably
tell me, it's a parakeet.

Sabrina, she found
a parakeet head

and cooked that up and ate it.

Sabrina: Maybe you're
good to eat, maybe you're not.

I hope I don't regret it.

Right now, I'm
munching on a beak.

That's why it's so crunchy.

I'm eating a bird's brains.

There's some eyes in here.

Vincent: I give her a
lot of credit for doing that

'cause you can get
all sorts of parasites

from uncooked brain.

[ sighs ]

sabrina: I ate bugs.

I ate snails.

And I ate a parrot head.

Tasted just like chicken.

Whoo!

Narrator: "naked &
afraid" continues to bare all.

Woman: Whoo!

Guys, this is so
embarrassing. I apologize.

Don't think that this challenge
is fake or that it's easy to do.

Sabrina, I understand you're
gonna get this message.

I wound up with three
diseases, believe it or not.

I mean, that doesn't
give you the right

to have the
attitude that he did.

You b*tch more
than anyone I know.

Sabrina: No, I do not.
You are a prima dona.

I don't understand
why you feel like

you have to pee right
outside the front door, though.

I don't really understand.
This is such a dude thing.

[ monkey howling ]

narrator: In the wild,

it's those everyday
things we take for granted

that can bring a
survivalist to his knees.

The elemental need
for food and water

and the lack of both

can burden a team's chances
to make it through the 21 days.

Sorry for the frank and beans.

Quit talking about food.

Our primary need at this
point has become food.

I am really, really hungry.

We are in a state
of true starvation.

My body's shutting down.

I didn't have a lot extra
fuel on the body to start with,

and that's proven to
be detrimental to me.

Cass: I have only
noticed that I feel hungry

after I've eaten something.

So it's like, once you hit,
like, a plateau, like a wall,

you kind of, like, your
mind kind of accepts it.

Like, "yo, you're
not getting any food."

[ sighs ] [bleep]

I'm feeling exhausted.

I'm feeling hungry.

Hunger -- it was
constantly present.

And it's not that kind of
hunger that you experience --

you know, you miss lunch

and your stomach
growls a little bit.

You know, you get something
for happy hour instead.

[ exhales deeply ]

it's not that kind of hunger.

Damn. [ chuckles ]

it is this kind of hunger
that is undeniable

because you're watching
your body cannibalize itself.

How are you feeling?

It's brutal.

We've got nothing. Nothing.

We've got no
power bars. Nothing.

We've got no protein.

The hunger was horrible.

I think we went the
first four or five days

without eating a single thing.

I think 9 out of 10 people

that you drop off
in our situation die.

Hands down.

[ gags ] I think
I'm gonna be sick.

You okay? No.

Sabrina told me she
had stomach pains

possibly from dehydration.

[ straining ] my stomach is
super-clenched right now.

Dehydration and sickness
just overwhelmed me.

I was too sick to do
anything other than cry.

You're okay. Hang in there.

You know, if you need
to throw up, that's okay.

[ breathing heavily
] that's okay.

And right off the
bat, I started thinking,

"oh, great. I'm already
the weakest link."

my goddess is a moon goddess,

so I get my energy from
the moon and at nighttime.

[ breathing heavily ]

but somehow I managed to hang on

despite the dehydration
and the weakness

that my body was suffering.

I'm just gonna step over there.

[ sighs ]

narrator: Living with the
hunger, the thirst, the cold,

and countless other obstacles,

the survivalists can be
worn down very quickly.

All-consuming exhaustion
can set in at any time.

Oh [bleep] are you okay?

E.J.: Man. All day, all night.

When we were
rowing out of there,

e.J. Was falling asleep
between paddle strokes.

He was so exhausted he
was literally falling asleep

and he was still going.

Laura: Heading into the sunset.

[ snores ] huh?

I'm just bone tired.

You're sleep deprived,
and you're exhausted.

You're just trying to get
through the day, man.

I am gradually setting my
goals lower and lower and lower

because the tireder I get,

the harder it will be to
obtain different goals.

Sometimes I feel like
I'm totally out of control.

And I'm sure it's because
lack of food, lack of sleep.

So, we started up
a pretty kick-a*s fire.

Anala's working on that.

What'd you call me?

Anala?

[bleep] [bleep] nine days,
you still don't know my name.

Alana.

That's what I said.
You said anala.

I'm [bleep] I am tired.

I apologize.

Anala? I shouldn't feel bad.

You jack up everybody's
name here on production, too.

Yeah. Don't feel special.

Narrator: During the challenge,

the environment the
survivalists must endure

can be their biggest enemy.

And even in the tropics,

there is still the
danger of hypothermia.

Fernando: How you doing,
sam? Sam, we got this.

I'm just freezing cold.

Fernando: Like,
dangerous, scary cold?

I don't know. I'm just cold.

And we, of course, didn't
have fire the first 10 nights

that we were there.

So it was very,
very, very frigid.

I'm freezing.

It was so cold, I remember
looking at my nails a lot

and they would be purple.

Since the challenge,

I've noticed I've got a
weird aversion to being cold.

I like to bundle up.

I'd rather be sweating
underneath my clothes

than the feeling of cold.

I just do not like it.

I'm just cold to the bone.

[ thunder crashes ]

we were hit with
this biblical storm

and we were so close
to being hypothermic.

How's it going, laura?

It was really raw out there.

We were exposed
to the elements a lot.

You staying dry? Laura: No.

E.J. Was close to hypothermia.

I was close to hypothermia.

And we couldn't
do anything about it.

[ thunder crashes ]

narrator: As the
hours turned into days,

the grim reality
of the situation

made everyone question
whether they had enough

to complete the challenge.

This is hard, man.

Phew. You're telling me.

For some, the pain
of trying to survive

brought them to their knees.

I had my body pushed a number
of times during the challenge.

I had roaring hemorrhoid pain
at one point, which is always fun.

In the middle of the night,
he woke up in a lot of pain.

I don't know much
about hemorrhoids.

What I do know is I
want him to be okay.

Ridiculous [bleep]

e.J.: I was cutting this
tree and it started to rain.

And when I hit that tree,

it glanced off the tree
and right into my shin.

The machete got me.
It's bleeding real bad.

[bleep]

and I thought, "oh, my god.

I've hacked my leg off,
and laura's got to go alone."

you all right? Yeah.

They insisted the medic
come in and stitch it.

I was gonna be fine

with just putting some
moss and some leaves

and tying some vine around it.

But I don't always get a vote.

I'll be up and
running in a minute.

[ voice breaking ]
I'm not doing so well.

I don't think I've ever
felt weaker in my life.

A lot of things crossed my mind

as far as what might have
caused me to get sick on day 20,

including the parrot head.

Right now I'm
munching on a beak.

There were other
things that I had eaten,

including some rotten
berries that I had found

on the floor in the jungle.

The doctor came in.

She did some palpitations,

and I think we've
ruled out appendicitis,

which is a good thing.

The doctor says
I have to go poop.

[ chuckles ]

yeah!

Narrator: Mental toughness
may be the most important tool

in getting through
harsh survival situations.

Aah!

Ironically, it's often
the environment's

smallest creatures that
test one's endurance.

Holy [bleep]

in bolivia, vince
fell victim to malaria,

a disease often
carried by mosquitos.

Vince: Oh. Oh, my god.

The teams quickly discovered

that there's no place
these pests can't get to.

Mosquitos, they
love warm places.

Right now, they're
in my vajayjay, alive.

Your crotch and your
armpits, that's where they go to.

I'm attempting to make a
grass skirt to cover my behind.

Tyler: A.K. And I were not
mentally prepared for this.

These mosquitos are crazy.

It was like wearing a mosquito
sweatshirt and, like, sweatpants

'cause there were that
many on you at one time.

That's pretty nasty.

This probably is one
of the worst parts.

I've never had
something so small

mess with my head
so [bleep] much.

And it never stops.

[ insects buzzing ]

well, apparently, the
leeches like me a lot more

than they like fernando.

Fernando: Whoa.
You're covered in leeches.

Sam: Yep.

The most unpleasant
experience was actually getting

a couple of leeches
on my vaginal area.

Oh, that's awesome.

I wanted to discreetly
handle it, as bad as it hurt.

And so I just
remember running off

to find a private place
to take care of the matter.

And I know that fernie had a
similar experience with a leech.

Fernando: There was
a leech on my scrotum.

That would happen,

unfortunately,
kind of frequently.

Guys, this is so
embarrassing. I apologize.

Cass: I need help. [bleep]

shannon: What happened.

I think I got one in my eye.

A tick? Yeah.

Tick situation
was very, very bad.

Yep.

We had the ticks biting us

on our eyelids and
our private parts.

And they actually bite pretty
hard when they first get on you.

Oh [bleep] [bleep]

[bleep] these [bleep] things.

But we had a remedy with that.

We started using
ammonia-based liquid,

which is just using
our urine. [ chuckles ]

that was awesome every morning,

washing my face
down with my own pee.

[ sighs ]

[ grunting ]

that's really kind of
where it got weird for me.

God knows what's up my nose.

My [bleep] itches really bad.

Is that honest enough for you?

Sabrina: If there's anything
not to like about vince,

he can be quite a [bleep]

the lazy life of a
hunter/gatherer.

Narrator: Besides
heightened emotions...

Can you try and relax today?

It was just stupid.

...Another problem can
occur when survivalists

are thrust together in
such harsh environments.

The touchy issue of hygiene
can rear its ugly head.

God knows what's up my
nose. Woman: [ laughs ]

jeff was all about,

like, scent marking right
out front of our shelter.

Eva: I don't understand why
you feel like you have to pee

right outside the
front door, though.

This is such a dude thing.

Like, no girl is gonna go along

and squat right
outside the front door.

You pee, like, three feet
away from where I pee

and it's not outside
the front door?

Trust me. Eva's
not the one to talk.

I mean, she washed
her face every morning

in this little pool of water.

This is our washing hole.

It's our little auxiliary
water source.

I think pretty much
every day out here,

this is how I've started it off.

That was the same pool of water

that we had cleaned the
guts out of a snake with.

Oh, so much better.
Little more, though.

I mean, there was still lizard
parts in that pond of water

that she was washing
her face with every day.

Whoo!

E.J.: I like to have
good dental hygiene.

After a while of eating
some nasty things,

that taste is in your mouth.

I got my freddy flintstone
toothbrush in hand.

That really got me in
touch with my caveman side.

Minty fresh.

I start bragging to eva,

"hey, check out
these leaves I found.

These make the
best toilet paper."

and she looks at
me and she says,

"why are you using leaves?"

[ sighs ]

I'm a pebbles kind of
person and jeff prefers leaves.

And I'm very
adamant about the fact

that a smooth stone is absolutely
the best butt wipe and squeegee

on the face of the planet.

My [bleep] itches really
bad. Eva: [ chuckles ]

and I don't really
want to itch it

'cause it's
probably really dirty

and all I have
is my fingernails.

And I eat with these things.

My butt really
itched. I got to tell you.

Every time I sat down, I
was sitting down in the dirt

so there was dirt and mud
and who knows what else,

crammed in the crack of my butt.

So maybe I can find a [bleep]
itcher out here somewhere.

Yeah, the [bleep]
scratcher. It was a good idea.

Is that honest?
Honest enough for you?

Narrator: Another type of pain
the survivalists experienced

was a typical one that occurs

when people live together
in extreme conditions.

Honesty can become
as scarce as water.

In terms of secrets out there

and things happening
that nobody knew about,

a lot of times
during the challenge,

I just needed to get the
hell away from sabrina.

I'm ready to go
for a dip. [ laughs ]

I saw some palms just
beyond the creek and the tree.

I'm going the other
way for the palm nuts.

I saw one really
close by and low.

This side? Yeah.

I didn't know what
vince was doing

when he would disappear
throughout the entire day.

See you later.

I felt very at peace
when I was by myself,

I guess I would say.

I learned, however,
that he was sleeping.

When I realized

that he wasn't holding up
his end by doing the hunting,

that was pretty upsetting.

If there's anything
not to like about vince,

he can be quite a [bleep]

the lazy life of a
hunter/gatherer.

Narrator: As days
turned into weeks,

the unending struggle
began to manifest itself

in the survivalists' behavior.

[ grunting ]

from time to time,
things got a little weird.

I feel like we're
animals in the zoo.

[ growls ]

and these guys
are the spectators.

To be honest, I'd eat
a dead body right now.

Oh, god. I would, too.

I would. Dibs on the thigh, man.

Dude, I'd carve
into a butt cheek.

Absolutely!

It was a little weird,
but it just makes sense.

I mean, you have to
consider every angle.

Well, I mean, think of
how many resources

we would have in
a single carcass.

All of those bones,
all that meat.

Honestly, I was starving so bad

that if eva had dropped dead,

I wouldn't have any
problem cutting a steak out of,

you know, one of her
calves or something.

I would have tried not to
mess up her tattoos, of course.

Are we seriously talking
about how awesome it would be

to have a dead human right now?

Eva: Dude, we've
gone cannibalistic

48 hours into the challenge.

There was a guy. He's
famous or infamous.

And what he did was he saved
up a bunch of apple seeds.

Like half a cup.

He ate them all at once
'cause he liked apple seeds.

He died of cyanide poisoning.

[ laughs ] that's
murphy's law for you.

This thing just
jumped on my face.

Keith: Oh, wow. You
have a little friend.

I think he's gonna do it again.

He's gonna jump
directly on my face.

[ laughs ]

I'm tapping out and I'm leaving.

After vince left, I
was completely alone.

As the days went on, you know,

they were long days of
absolutely nothing to do.

Sabrina: Mushroom
man, I'll be right back.

I'm gonna head to the beach.

Do you want to
come? You can come.

Mushroom man was the best friend

anybody could ask for.

Stay there, okay?

Vince was not the greatest
conversationalist to have.

I feel like [bleep]

especially considering that
he was very opinionated.

I like mushroom man.

I can say bad things to him,
I can say good things to him,

and he never complains.

Mushroom man agreed
with everything I said

and never said a
word about anything.

Mushroom man is not a
friend with benefits, no.

All he is, is friend that
gets to listen to me talk a lot.

Yeah. There's no
benefit to that. I promise.

All right, dude. I'm gonna
get this smelly snake

filled up with some
emergency backup water for us.

Jeff: The worst thing we tried

was that frickin'
snake water container.

It's impressively water tight.

But the smell?

To be honest, I was
against it the whole time.

Eva: If worse comes to worse,

it's better to have
water and not use it

than to need it badly.

It was rancid.

I would have rather
died than drink that water.

So I'm gonna just tie it on
to this long stick over here

and carry it along, like huck
finn style over my shoulder.

That's a really good idea.

Alana: Since I did spend
such a significant time alone,

that's really kind of
where it got weird for me.

It sounds kind of weird,

but I had a dream about
these little creatures.

I dreamed that I was at a local
comedy club in my hometown,

ordered the fried
calamari as I always do,

and I was brought this basket

of weird-looking little
nugget crunchy things.

And I told the
server, "what is this?"

and she goes,
"we're out of calamari.

This is our substitute.
You'll love it."

and it turned out in my dream
to be these little creatures

that are stuck to the rocks
all over where our shelter was.

There's one.

Aah! Those little
things look like trilobites.

So I peeled a
couple off the rocks,

threw them in the fire.

It kind of tastes like
bacon-wrapped shrimp.

They were delicious and I
found a new food source.

They say follow
your dreams, right?

Even if your dreams tell you to
eat some weird bug on a rock.

So, it's that time
of the day again.

We're gonna point out
the funny shapes in the cliff.

And what do we have up top here?

Some of the stranger
moments that I came across

was definitely all the things
that I was seeing in the cliff.

Sabrina: I see a dog's head.

Here's his nose.

It goes up. Here's his ear.

Here's his neck.
Maybe like a doberman.

Do you see that? [ laughs ]

we saw george
washington. He's up there.

Hey, george.

I just found either
a rastafarian,

maybe santa claus, or
just a grumpy santa claus.

Maybe it's 'cause he's all wet.

You see him?

It's santa claus'
face. He's grumpy.

That was cute.

I want off. I want
off this island.

Keith: This show
was so much harder

than I ever
believed it could be.

I'm [bleep] done.

Vince! Yes?

Stop talking for five
minutes and give me a stick.

What?

A.K.: Shut up and quit
being a whiny [bleep]

tyler: You're being a [bleep]

narrator: There's one thing that
every "naked & afraid" challenger

takes away from
the experience --

the hard, cold truth that
it is all very, very real.

Tyler: Yes! Nice! Nice!

A.K.: No! [bleep]

everyone watching me right now

is obviously doing so from
the comfort of their home.

Don't think that this challenge

is contrived, fake,
or that it's easy to do.

I do not feel normal whatsoever.

Physically, I'm trashed.

Keith: This challenge
was so much harder

than I ever
believed it could be.

Keith: It's empty. Alana: What?

I'm [bleep] done.

Nobody's helping you.

In fact, nobody's even
frickin' talking to you.

Yes, there are cameramen,

but they won't even acknowledge
you if you say one word to them.

You can't talk to them.
You can't interact with them.

There's nobody there but you
deciding what is the next step,

how you're gonna keep warm,
where you're getting water from.

It's daunting to think of,

but at the same
time, exhilarating.

If you don't catch food,
you're gonna be hungry.

If you step on a snake,
you're gonna get bit.

Any action you have out there
has very real consequences.

E.J.: This is no joke.

There's nobody coming in and
saying, "hey, how you feeling?

Can I give you a massage?"

that [bleep] doesn't happen.

E.J.: Today's my wife birthday.

It's been a hard day today

for me to not be there
to celebrate with cake.

I love you so much.

I wish you could see
this jungle with me.

Cass: Oh, my god. It's a boa.

I've been to multiple
survival schools in the military.

I've been in multiple
harrowing situations.

I've never gone for three
weeks without any help.

I had my fire starter and
the knife and shannon.

Oh, my god. Holy [bleep]

there's no cushy hotel room.

Nobody's slipping you a sandwich
when the camera is turned off.

All of a sudden, I could feel
my heart beating in my neck.

And I need something
to drink immediately.

It is ba*ls to the
wall full-on survival.

Narrator: When a man and a
woman have to survive 21 days

in the worst
conditions imaginable,

it's no surprise when
tension and conflict surfaces.

I can't [bleep] get it.

I'm just tired of
hearing you complain

about every little thing.

You b*tch more
than anyone I know.

No, I do not. You
are a prima dona.

Yes, you are.

Whatever, mr. "I need a pillow.

I need more
padding. My feet hurt."

vince: I'm a tracker, a wildlife
tracker. Tracks and signs.

Signs says a rodent
tried to open that nut.

Vince! Yes?

Stop talking for five
minutes and give me a stick.

What?

I don't think I've
heard him stop talking

for five seconds yet.

[ thunder crashes ]

tyler: Once I get one
more -- just trust me.

Once I get one more --

I don't care.
Just go for it. Go.

Well, it's a quick debate.

Stop talking!
You're wasting time!

What the [bleep]

I'll quit debating
if you don't care.

Narrator: In the
peruvian jungle,

the friction between a.K. And
tyler was particularly intense.

I really don't
like it over here.

You don't like anything.

Well, especially you.

A.K.: Quit crying. [bleep] you.

Narrator: As this
unseen footage shows,

the cruel conditions
took an emotional toll

on a.K. And tyler.

As the jungle punished them,
they punished each other.

A.K: I've been up the last
three [bleep] times fixing the fire.

You just got up.

Tyler: I wouldn't say
we loved each other.

If I chose my partner, I
wouldn't choose her ever.

That's [bleep] rude as hell.

Tyler: I'm not
worried about "rude."

I'm worried about [bleep]
making it through the night.

We're gonna [bleep]
make it. [bleep] dang.

You know, I think
there's that kind of abrupt,

"I don't give a
[bleep]" attitude

that she carries with her.

Shut up and quit
being a whiny [bleep]

you're being a [bleep] b*tch.

What I liked least about tyler

was that he was very
negative all the time.

Well, you're being
an [bleep] right now.

Really?

You're the only one
being crazy. I'm fine.

So why the [bleep] would
you be a [bleep] to me now?

I'm not trying to be a
[bleep] oh, whatever.

You are trying to be a
huge a*s[bleep] towards me

and I haven't done anything.

I'm not married to you. I
don't owe you anything.

A.K.: Being with tyler

made me greatly appreciate
my husband so much more.

Do you want see [bleep]
'cause I can be an a*s[bleep]

oh, I know you can.

Narrator: Conflict with their partner
and an unrelenting environment

brought some of the
survivalists to their breaking point.

I'm strongly considering
throwing in the towel today.

Narrator: Only the
truly strong survive.

Several survivalists did
not make it to the end.

Nothing is working at
all with the mosquitoes.

Who the [bleep] could
come out here and survive...

Naked in the amazon jungle?

I don't know. Without you...

[ chuckles ]

...It's just gonna make
everything twice as hard.

I am not battling these
mosquitoes for any longer,

no matter what.

I have a family and a husband
I have to get back home to.

I'm sorry.

You got to do
what you got to do.

I do regret quitting. And
at the same time, I don't,

because I know the reason I
quit was for my health and safety

so I could come back home
and take care of my kids.

Tyler: 13 months in afghanistan

didn't do to me
mentally and physically

what this five days being out
here in the jungle has done.

Tapping out of the
challenge and calling it quits --

it's not something
that I like to do,

but every person
has their limit.

I have nothing to
prove to anybody.

Yep, I'm done.

And, really,
given the situation,

with a.K. Quitting first,

that's what I used to kind of
make myself not feel as bad

for quitting anyways.

Nobody wants to watch
a fat guy with tattoos

out in the amazon
for 18 days by himself.

Keith is not doing too great.

I woke up that
morning feeling strange.

I walked out to the beach,

and next thing I know, I'm
laying sideways on the beach.

I think I had a seizure.

There's no way to
know what happened.

I don't regret tapping out.

I regret that I had to tap out.

Keith: [bleep]

and I feel like I made the right
decision because of my kids.

I was like, "I'm finally
being smart on something

that could permanently
damage me."

alana: It did mean a lot to me

to make it to the end
by myself without a guy.

Yeah. Time for some
redecorating, I guess.

Vince: 16 days is a
long time to spend here.

I don't know about you
-- I simply can't do it.

I'm tapping out, and
I'm okay with that.

Initially, when vince told
me he was tapping out,

I was very sad.

I really appreciate
everything you did.

Thanks for being my instructor.

Over the next couple
of days, though,

this turned into resentment,

and I felt like, "as
a survival instructor,

how do you tap out
before me," you know?

"shouldn't you bring more
to the table than I do?"

and he didn't.

Narrator: Weeks after
returning home from bolivia,

vince sent sabrina a message
to explain why he had to tap out

and leave her on her own.

Vince: Sabrina, I understand
you're gonna get this message,

so hello.

I hope you're doing well
at home with your family.

Sorry I had to leave you
out there, but it turns out,

I wound up with three
diseases, believe it or not --

spotted fever from
a tick, leptospirosis,

possibly from rat urine,

and falciparum malaria,
the most deadly type.

So I was very
vindicated in leaving.

I didn't want to do it.

I know you were
crying at the time,

and it was a very
daunting challenge

for you to do those
last days alone.

I feel like I was able
to give you some skills

that you were able to take
through the final days without me.

Just very proud
you were able to do it

and proud I got
the hell out of there.

Thank you for being my partner,

and I think we both
learned a lot out there.

[ chuckles ] well, I
guess that's what you get

when you have the attitude
that he did, and he did, so...

I was very angry that he left,

and he really let me down.

Yeah, this video doesn't
exactly do it for me.

Badass.

Narrator: Coming up...

I'm giving us a solid
a-plus, 4.0, epic adventure.

You're gonna think I'm
absolutely [bleep] crazy,

but looking back,
yes, I would do it again.

Whoo!

I'm so dizzy. [ sighs ]

the weight loss was crazy.
I lost, I think, 22 pounds.

That's the most
weight I've ever lost.

When I got back,

I basically elected to eat
and drink whatever I wanted,

and I've gained all my
weight back easily. [ chuckles ]

eva: It's like you can see your
body consuming your muscles.

You see your body
cannibalizing itself.

It's very intense.

Shannon: The first time
I saw myself in the mirror

after I had showered
and come out,

I could see sort of all
my bones sticking out.

Oh, I actually looked
in the mirror, and I cried.

This time, I lost
close to 44 pounds,

so I kind of knew,
going into this challenge,

it was gonna be
a 21-day suck fest.

Day 21!

Narrator: For those who are
able to survive the 21-day ordeal...

Aah!

Narrator: ...The last day,

when they were finally extracted
from their grueling environment,

was the sweetest.

Laura: Oh, my god! E.J.: Yeah!

Yeah! Yeah!

[ shouting indistinctly ]

everything about
extraction was epic.

We [bleep] did it! Yeah!

Whoo!

Getting on that helicopter

and flying out of there
was just -- it was a rush.

[ both cheering ]

laura: Looking
down upon the river

that had been our
home for three weeks,

it was so exciting,

but there was also this
little bittersweet sadness

because it had become our home,

because it had
taught us so much.

It humbled us, and we
connected with that place.

There was absolute
sadness leaving the amazon.

Bye, amazon! Thank you!

My hat's off to the
jungle. Jungle's no joke.

It'll eat you up and spit
you out. That's for sure.

When you hear the sound
of the chopper coming...

Hey! Hey! Over here!

Get us out of here!

...It was just like, you know,
angel on your shoulders.

It was just great.

Finally made it.

There are very few
moments in my life

that compare with the
just blissful experience

of completing this challenge.

Emotionally,
physically, toughest thing

I ever did in my life.

Fernando: I'm definitely tired.

[ engine idling ]

this is it.

Ohh.

Whoo! Samantha! We made it!

The sight of that
boat coming our way

after 21 days out in
that jungle was amazing.

Whoo!

Fernando: The level of suffering
and misery that I experienced...

We did it.

...Was an all-time high for me,

so words cannot express...

Whoo! Whoo!

...The joy we had that day.

Malaysia, it's been a pleasure,

but it's time for me to
go home to my family.

[ thunder crashes ]

eva: Good morning.

Good morning.

Day 21.

Oh, my gosh. It's finally here.

Seeing that sunrise on
the morning of day 21 --

that was one of the
best days of my life.

[ groans ] oh, my gosh.

Oh, my god.

I can't believe
we're almost here.

It's like you don't believe
that it's actually gonna be real.

[ laughs ]

it's like you don't
actually believe

that somebody's gonna
come and save you

until you're sitting in the
back of a truck, driving away.

Whoo-hoo!!

I'm so dizzy.

I'm giving us a solid,
a-plus, 4.0, epic adventure.

Guess we don't
need these anymore.

Yeah.

I have no regrets at all.

I'm going to visit belize again

probably just on vacation
and not naked and afraid.

[ chuckles ]

it was a little bit
bittersweet when I left

'cause I was kind of sad.

I left a piece
of myself in fiji.

I came back from this
challenge just a different person

and, I think, a better person.

It really puts things into
perspective on what's important.

Truly, truly life-changing.

Eva: I hope everybody,
over the course of their lives,

has the chance to push
themselves in the same way.

It really helps focus the
things in life that are important.

It gives you so much
perspective on who you are.

Keith: I learned
a ton about myself

and how I interact with people

and how strong I am or weak I
am and what I can actually do.

It has been a... Wild ride.

Samantha and I was one of
the highlights of the experience.

I have nothing but gratitude

that she was my
partner out there.

Sam: There's just a
bond I have with fernie

that I don't have with
anybody else on the planet,

and that's really cool.

Cass: Shannon -- I
mean, she's awesome.

She's, like, you
know, my best friend.

Since the show,
we talk quite a bit.

Shannon: I made a
friend for life in cass.

That's a pretty intense
bond to form in 21 days.

Cass: And it's kind of something
special that I'll always have

for the rest of my life.

When I think of e.J.,

he's someone that I know
will always have my back.

E.J. Will always
be family to me.

Hell, I'm ready to go again.

Yeah! That was epic!

Find some other place

that somebody else
doesn't want to go to

and make sure you pack
laura zerra in my suitcase

'cause I want to make sure

I've got the right person by my
side when we do these things.

Laura: You're gonna think
I'm absolutely [bleep] crazy,

but looking back,
yes, I would do it again.

Samantha: I would
totally go out there

and take my clothes off
and meet another stranger.

Yeah, I would do that again.

[ sighs ]

I would absolutely do it again.

Cass: It's the longest survival
situation I've ever been in

and hopefully I will ever be in,

unless I go to try
and do it again.

I would definitely
do this again.

Yeah, baby!!

I would absolutely
do this again.

I'm dying to do it
again. Put me out there.

Whoo!

E.J.: It was an
honor, a privilege,

and I would do it
again in a minute.

Yeah!!
