04x06 - Lord of the Rats

Post by bunniefuu »

[ macaques grunting ]

angela: Oh, my god.
You hear the monkeys?

They want us out of their place.

Darrin: That's the
closest I've heard them.

They're keeping an eye on us.

A rabid monkey would attack me,

and there's nothing
I can do about it.

So much easier if we
could hunt the monkeys.

What would you do
with it if you got it?

Eat it.

I'll just be the apex
predator, here.

The easiest way to deal
with thieving monkeys

is to k*ll one.

Narrator: One man
and one woman...

[ animal grunts ] aah!

...Alone for 21 days...

Aah!

Cut myself up pretty good here.

...To face the most
primal survival challenge

of their lives.

Man: Mmm, rat kebabs.

They have no clothes,
no food, no water --

only their skills...

Oh, god, that [bleep] hurts.

...And their will to survive.

Whoo-hoo!

darrin: Monkey takes
my food, I eat the monkey.

Good morning.

I'm ready to watch
the sun come up

one last time with
my clothes on.

[ laughs ]

[ squeaks ]

[ chuckles ]

go get it.

Last hike with karma dog.

[ chuckles ]

she's the only family I got, and
she goes everywhere with me.

But I got to leave her,

'cause I'm flying out
tomorrow morning.

It's gonna be a good one.

It's 4:30 a.M., and this
will be our goodbye.

Hi. Bye.

Hi, luna. I'll miss you.

Saying goodbye was a
lot harder than I thought,

so I'm already
missing my family,

but soon I'll be home,

and I'll have an
adventure to talk about.

This island looks
absolutely postcard beautiful,

but let me assure you,
there's gonna be dangers.

This is not gonna
be an easy 21 days.

My name is angela.

I'm from greensburg,
pennsylvania,

and I'm 36 years old.

I have five kids at home,
and I'm engaged to be married.

When I was younger, I
did some backpacking,

got into just hiking
around in the woods.

But people would think
that I'm not that tough

just because of the
way I present myself.

Even my dad said, "you
won't make it past one day."

so I'm out here to
prove to him and myself

that I can pass the
most ultimate survival test

of my life.

I run marathons, so I'm used to

just concentrating
and pushing through.

Narrator: Angela is a city girl

who brings a strong will and
excellent physical stamina

into this challenge.

But her limited survival skills

tested in the
low-to-intermediate range.

As a result, she begins with
a primitive survival rating,

or psr, of 6.1.

Darrin: I have never been in
an environment like this before.

This is intense.

These cliffs are, like,
right down to the water.

The jungle is like boom,
until they're vertical.

It's there, and it is thick.

My name's darrin.

I'm 33 years old,

and I'm working as
a rock-climbing guide

and a chef.

The majority of my life I've
spent alone in the mountains,

but I'm not really alone 'cause
I've always had a dog with me.

When I was about 9 years old,

my parents started
dropping me off

to go camping by myself.

They'd just leave me.

Narrator: Decades of experience
on his own in the wilderness

will aid darrin greatly
in this challenge,

but his loner attitude
could present problems

dealing with a partner.

His initial psr has
been set at 7.8.

Darrin: This is cool.

I can't get arrested
for being naked.

It's the first time in my life

I don't have to worry
about someone seeing me

and calling the rangers.

Angela: I have nail
polish and toe polish on

because I want
to survive pretty.

It's go time.

Hi. I'm angela.

I'm darrin. Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you.

Excited? I'm stoked.

I'm so excited. This
is gonna be a blast.

Yeah.

Darrin has this
wild tarzan look.

It's not what I expected,

but he seems
laid-back, so that's great.

Let's get this going.

Narrator: In addition
to being given

angela and darrin
have each been allowed

to bring one survival item.

I brought a machete.

I'm a professional rock climber,

so I brought a good bit of rope.

So many things we
can make from this,

and making natural
cordage is time-consuming,

time-consuming.

Ooh, I have the map.

Where are we?

The survivalists
will be off the grid

for the next 21 days
on the stifling, humid,

mountainous island
of koh mook, thailand.

Towering limestone
cliffs surround a dense,

nearly impenetrable jungle,

an unforgiving terrain
of razor-sharp thorns

and swarms of biting
and stinging insects.

Overhead, the
trees are dominated

by aggressive macaques,
carriers of the herpes b,

or monkey b, virus, which
can be fatal to humans.

The island is overrun

by an out-of-control
rat population

numbering in the thousands.

These creatures transmit
more human diseases

than any other life
form on the planet.

But where there are rats,
there are also predators,

including the extremely toxic
king cobra, which, at 19 feet,

is the world's largest
venomous snake.

I have never been
to the jungle before.

I've never left the u.S. Before,

so this is a totally
new experience for me.

I've been living off the land

and training to
since I was a little kid.

Do you have a family at home?

Um, I have a dog. That's it.

[ laughs ] that's family.

Darrin: I haven't found anyone

to, uh, fully understand
my wild ways,

and I'm not gonna
change my ways, really,

so, uh, I just have a dog.

She's the best family
I've found so far.

You?

Zero dogs, but five kids.

You've got five kids?
That's enough to take care of.

[ laughs ] yeah.

Angela seems cool, but she's
got nail polish and toe polish.

I hope she's not
someone that is so used to

the luxuries of life that
she can't live without them.

[ macaques grunting ]

do you hear that?

Yeah.

Monkeys.

Nice. That'd be cool.

I've never seen a monkey before.

They're usually quite
selfish and territorial.

I have a good eye for movement.

You don't want to know
how many things I k*lled

as a little kid.

I like to try everything.

So far this year,
I've eaten, like,

three types of chipmunks,
two types of squirrels...

Ugh.

...A bunch of marmots,
a couple little birds.

I had emu and ostrich...

Geez.

...Lots of buffalo,
lots of elk, deer,

wild turkey and domestic turkey,

spruce grouse, a goose,

a couple ducks, a
couple porcupines.

Hm.

Angela: Darrin and I couldn't
be more polar opposites.

He'll k*ll anything that moves.

I'd better stay
on his good side,

or I could wind up on the menu.

So, have you spent a
lot of time out in the wild.

I have. I've backpacked.

But I've never roughed
it to this extreme.

I've definitely
lived off the land,

but I've never had to
spend this much time

with a stranger in a
stressful situation before, so...

I hope you're not too worried.

[ both chuckle ]

I try not to bite.

So far, you seem okay.

Darrin and I are
about two years apart,

but I feel like I'm a little bit
more of the adult, maybe --

like the way older
sister, or the aunt.

Oh, nice!

Big clearing, the
ocean's right here,

and it looks like
we have a cave.

Whoa, that's lucky.

The cave seems
to be pretty clean.

I don't see any sign of
snakes or too many spiders.

I like it.

But any little holes we see
down around the base of it,

I'm plugging up with
some dirt and some rocks,

so if there's something in it,

at least make it a
little more difficult

for it to crawl out
while we're there.

Darrin talks a lot.

He's a little bit like
he's a guide on this trip

and I'm his student,

so hopefully those
roles change a little bit.

Darrin: Want to
work on a fire now?

Okay.

Whatever we can get. Yeah.

There's some palm fronds.

Like, those things are
really pokey, so, like,

to break the tinder up,

I usually rub it
between my hands,

so if it's thorny... Okay.

Darrin: I work as a guide,

and I'm very keen to
teach the skills that I have.

I'm not expecting to have
a dry spindle and fire board.

Just trying to make
the best tinder I can,

'cause everything's wet here.

[ squeaking ]

I have started hundreds
of fires with a bow drill,

but never in an
environment like this.

This is hot and humid.

Good job.

Just start stacking around this.

Okay. Got it.

Angela: I'm so happy
he got the fire started.

Darrin: Now we got
fire, dude. We're set.

Like, at least we'll
stay warm tonight

and keep a few of the bugs away

'cause, like,
they're getting us.

[ laughs ]

angela: First night here,
we're gonna sleep in the cave.

At least we have a
fire and we're warm.

Yep.

[ chittering ]

darrin: God.

A rat just crawled up on
me in the middle of the night.

Darrin: We got these rats
crawling around our camp.

One of them took a
little nibble on my toe.

Ew, no.

I think something
just crawled over me.

Oh, my god!

Yeah, three rats
crawled on me last night.

One of them took a
little nibble on my toe,

but it didn't break the
skin, at least, so I got lucky,

but definitely build a
sleeping platform tonight

so we can get
up off this ground.

Angela: To protect myself
from the sun and the dirt

and anything that
might crawl on me,

I cut some big leaves
down and made a skirt.

I offered to make
darrin a skirt,

but darrin prefers to be naked.

If I could not see darrin naked

for the remainder
of the challenge,

that would be great.

What do you want to
use for the platform?

I was gonna stand
two ends up on forks,

and then a crosspiece,

and then an "x"
brace on this end,

the other end should just
sit up on the dirt pretty well.

All right.

And it'll be, really,
like, only two poles

for a rat to run up on to us,

rather than from any
direction they please.

Darrin: I know there's
cobras on this island,

and rats are a
cobra's favorite food,

and I definitely don't want
a cobra coming hunting

in our cave at night.

[ monkeys hooting ]

darrin, do you hear
those monkeys?

Yeah.

They sound -- that's the
closest I've heard them.

Me too.

They're keeping an eye on us.

They know the second
you're not looking.

A rabid monkey would attack me,

and there's nothing
I can do about it.

[ macaques screeching ]

the heat and
humidity are k*lling us,

so we've got to take a break
from building our platform

and go get some food and water.

But if you take two
steps into the jungle,

the ground's covered in thorns,

so I'm gonna make
some sandals for us.

Angela, got to size
them to your feet.

I'm gonna
shorten it a little bit.

So, basically, we'll use the
inner strands from the rope

to bind these together.

This will open up a
whole new ball game

of where we can maneuver.

Then what did you say --
how did you do the ankle?

So, now you're
gonna do a heel loop,

and it just goes
right off your heel

on these points right here.

Angela: So, what do
you wear if you're gonna

take a girl out on a
date or something?

I'm usually shirtless
and in flip-flops, so...

[ laughs ]

does that prove
to be successful?

[ laughs ]

I don't go out on
very many dates.

It seems like he knows
how to talk a lot about

technical things and
maybe instructional,

so I just want to engage
with him a little bit more.

[ laughing ] he'll
either tell me to shut up

or talk back to me.

It's really thick here.

So much easier
going with sandals.

It is.

I wouldn't be able to walk
this far without these shoes.

And we found
running, fresh water.

That's really great.

I doubt it's safe to drink,
but we'll sanitize this,

and we've got good,
running, fresh water,

so that's pretty
good. That's great.

I don't see a single coconut.

I think animals eat them.

Rats chew into the ends of
all the coconuts and just --

they get into them before
we can find them even.

Maybe there's meat in it.

Yeah, see all the bugs
coming out of the hole in it?

Oh, yeah.

Can't eat that.

Darrin: But at least I
can drop some hot rocks

into a half coconut shell
and boil some water.

Boiling our water
in the coconut husk

is kind of good because
the rocks end up depositing

a little ash in the water,

and it gives us some
potassium and calcium.

As you boil in
the coconut shell,

it kind of gives it a
little coconut flavor,

and it's kind of like
drinking coconut tea,

so pretty stoked about it.

It actually tastes pretty good.

It's the end of day 2,
and we're laying here.

It's thundering
and lightning out.

[ thunder crashing ]

[ rain pouring ]

listen to that rain coming down.

Wow.

Right now, I am just
skinning down some bamboo

so I can use it to brush
my hair a little bit --

sort of like a modified comb
or hair pick or something.

And now I'm gonna
tie it on to this bamboo

and hopefully be able
to make a little comb

so my hair's not such a mess.

Taking care of myself
makes me feel human

and keeps my morale up,
which I really need today.

It's not beautiful, but at
least my hair isn't tangled.

We need to try to go in
the jungle a little bit deeper

and look for coconuts
because I'm so hungry.

I feel really weak.

There's lots of monkeys.

I hear them.

I'm not sure if
we're following them

or they're following us.

Maybe they know
where the fruit is.

It's day 3, and we're
already kind of hungry.

No food, and just want to
make sure I have energy

to sustain myself
for another 18 days.

Oh, my god.

I see bananas that
don't look too bad.

Let's take them.

You hear the monkeys?

They want us out of their place.

Geez, that is heavy.

Is it?

If we eat them
and they're not ripe,

they're gonna cause us
some stomach problems, so...

Yeah, I can't stand
unripe bananas.

No seeds in them, hardly.

All right. Bring them.

Let's go.

I'm worried it's gonna
get too dark, darrin.

I do not want to
be here in the dark.

Some monkeys
are up there howling.

They're all mad we're
down guarding the bananas.

Yeah, they want to get at them.

I don't know exactly
where the monkeys are,

but they know
exactly where we are.

I wish there was tigers
here to eat the monkeys.

Then we'd have less
monkey problems.

[ monkeys chittering ]

yeah.

Sounds like there's
some monkeys up there

right above our camp.

Oh, my god, these
monkeys are on attack.

I hope that they
leave us alone tonight.

I do not want them
coming in our cave at night

while we're sleeping.

[ monkeys chittering ]

I don't know

what was the biggest
game changer for us --

the bananas or the sandals.

I mean, without the sandals,

we might not have
found the bananas.

Mm-hmm.

Ooh, I see a monkey over
there above our bananas.

Really?

He just moved down.

Darrin: The monkeys
smell our bananas,

and they know they're here,

so I'll just be the
apex predator here.

[ darrin grunting ]

the easiest way to deal with
thieving monkeys is to k*ll one,

and then the rest of
them will be scared of you.

Monkey takes my
food, I eat the monkey.

Narrator: While keeping a
watchful eye on their stash of green

darrin and angela, who have
spent the better part of week 1

without nourishment,

cannot afford to wait any
longer for them to ripen.

Darrin: I kind of want
to dig a baking pit

so I can steam some bananas,

hopefully convert their
starches into some sugars

that we can eat.

How long do you think
it will take to bake?

Hours.

Oh.

Could we just wrap
them in something

and put them in the fire?

The outsides will
burn and blister,

and they won't
cook to the inside.

You got to slow-cook them.

So, like, cooking
them over the open fire

I don't really
think it would work.

We have enough where we
could try one each way, right?

Yeah, I just know
that a steaming pit

is what most jungle natives
do to cook stuff like that.

It doesn't hurt to try, right?

Angela: I think darrin is
used to being alone a lot,

so it's either his
way or...His way,

so he probably isn't even
aware of how annoying he is.

Darrin: Like,
cooking in the fire,

the skin and the outside burns

before the middle even
gets close to being cooked.

For this, you got to sit
here and watch them

and turn them and move them.

Do you want to try one?

I'll try one if you
want to try one.

Yeah, I'll try one, for sure.

They're still really hard.

Ooh.

Mm.

I don't know.

[ chuckles ]

is yours sweet, darrin?

No, it's pretty starchy.

They'll be a lot moister
if we steam them

as opposed to bake them.

Okay, but this wasn't
a terrible idea, right?

'cause I think that
process is gonna take

a significant time
longer than this, right?

So even if they
don't taste the best,

at least you have some starch
and sugars in your belly, right?

Mm.

So, how far do you
need to dig that?

Close to a foot or so.

That way, I can
line it with rocks.

'cause then you'd build
a fire on top of the rocks,

and then cover it up with dirt.

Okay.

So basically they
slow-cook and steam.

The slower you cook them,

the better the conversion
of starches to sugar.

We've got to get those
rocks super, super hot.

Just using this mud
to seal up the edges

so we don't lose too much heat.

I don't plan on
opening the pit up

until about dark
tonight for dinner.

I'm just gonna let it
sit as long as possible,

and late tonight,
we'll open it up

and call that good then.

I'm one of those
"I can set it aside

till tomorrow or the
next day" people, so...

Yeah, and I do
everything right away.

[ chuckles ]

I don't live on a schedule.

I live on hippie
indian stoner time.

[ laughing ] I live
on real-people time.

Let's try them.

There's our bananas.

Seedy but yummy.

They're sweet. Good job.

I told you this was the
best way to cook them.

You were right.

Narrator: The bananas provide
some relief for darrin and angela's

but steaming them is
very time-consuming,

so they supplement their
meager diet any way they can.

[ machete chopping ]

darrin: I knew I'd
be hungry here,

so it's not like
it's a surprise,

but so far, all we had
to eat was palm hearts

and banana hearts, and
my stomach's starting to --

I'm definitely feeling
the emptiness of it.

It's starting to shrink.

In situations like this,
I mean, this is tough.

A little bit of food should
make us feel better.

Angela: Even though
we're eating just very little,

it does help, but it's really
-- it's not a meal at all.

Our bodies are still starving.

Do you see that
big monitor lizard

laying there dead?

No, it's alive. Oh, my god.

Something definitely tore it
up, 'cause it's already bloody.

Oh, no.

Oh!

Darrin: Angela told
me she's a vegetarian,

but in a survival situation,

you have to take
what you can get

when it means staying alive.

What are you thinking?
You want to eat it.

It's a lot of meat.

I think 'cause it
was already injured,

so I don't know what
else was eating at it first

and biting at it.

I don't know.

I guess it's kind of just
a risk versus reward.

All reptiles are definitely
very dirty critters.

Getting sick this
early on in the game

could really be devastating,

where later on, it
might not be that bad.

I can play it safe
and just eat bananas.

I'm gonna try this one.

Narrator: The
bananas are ripening --

that will give angela and
darrin a valuable food source

for the remaining
week and a half

of the challenge.

The high potassium will keep
their muscles from cramping,

and the vitamin b6
can help protect against

mood swings and irritability.

That's so great.

The bananas are at least
a ticket to not starving

before we get out of here,

but we just got
all these monkeys

that definitely
know they're there,

and the second
we turn our backs,

they try and get them.

I've been throwing
lots of rocks at them,

but they're still there
keeping an eye on us,

so I'm not gonna let
my guard down one bit.

I've never had to deal with
thieving monkeys before.

Leave our bananas
alone, little monkey.

Day 11 out here.

Angela's down swimming
in the ocean, washing off.

I'm on guard-the-banana duty.

Angela: They wait all day long,

and they just want
to steal our bananas.

They're like little thieves.

There he is. They are so crazy.

I don't know what it's
gonna take to get rid of them.

Darrin: So much easier if
we could hunt the monkeys.

What would you do
with it if you got it?

Eat it.

Oh.

It's just a baby.

Well, they're little
thieves is what they are...

Yummy little thieves.

If it was legal to k*ll them,

I would have already made
a bow and some arrows

and been trying.

I could eat all those
bananas right now.

So could the monkeys.

We got all these bananas,

and they provide us lots
of sugars, and that's good,

but we also need
protein to survive.

We got rats crawling all
around our shelter cave at night.

I know my partner
won't eat them,

but I'll definitely eat
rat if I catch them.

It's just a different form
of squirrel, in my opinion.

Got it set.

I'm just adding some
weight for a little extra punch.

The trap I'm making
is a paiute deadfall.

I've been making traps like
this since I was about 9 years old.

Three sticks make
the trigger mechanism,

plus a bait stick,

and they're tied
together with a cordage,

and then for the weights,
I just used a big, long, flat

piece of driftwood that
washed up on the beach.

I used a little piece
of banana for bait,

and they got to
kind of tug on it,

and that frees the trigger
stick and makes the trap drop.

[ rock clatters ]

got my first rat.

Yeah. Look at him.

Mmm, yummy rat.

[ rock clatters ]

rat number 2 for the night.

Two rats on a stringer.

[ chuckles ]

that'll be a good breakfast.

My trap just went off.

Oh, there he is.

Squished rat butt.

Angela: Ugh! Darrin,
enough already.

There's rat number
3 for the night.

Not even midnight.

[ chuckles ]

angela: Darrin's
a little bit crazy.

I think he just really
likes to k*ll things.

He's so crazy about k*lling
these rats and these monkeys.

Rat number 4.

Pancake rat.

[ chuckles ]

it's really pissing me off.

Rat for breakfast.

Darrin: Mmm, rat kebabs.

There's it's testicles.

Testicles!

[ giggles ]

mmm.

[ chuckles ]

and that's cleaned and
prepared rat kebabs.

Angela: Darrin's really
starting to creep me out,

but I promised myself and
my dad that I could do this.

I'll just muscle through it.

Darrin: Mmm. Rat-be-cue.

Crunchy, crispy rat kebabs.

Sure you don't want
to try rat, angela?

Angela: No, I
don't want to try it.

Not even try it?

No.

It's the most disgusting
thing I've seen,

and I'm not sure if
the rats have diseases,

and it's kind of creepy.

What's it taste like?

It tastes just like
barbecued chicken.

Darrin: My partner
won't eat the rats,

but, hey, that's
her prerogative,

'cause they're
pretty damn yummy.

I left the organs in
the chest cavities

because that's where a
lot of your nutrients are.

Rat lung.

Try a kidney.

Mnh-mnh.

Angela: To see all of
its organs and guts --

that was really gross.

I'll stick to bananas today.

Just like eating squirrel.

[ high-pitched voice ]
hi, my name is whiskers.

I think darrin
actually feeds off

when people are kind
of appalled by him.

I think he feeds
off that attention.

So I just really
pay no attention

when he's acting
out a little bit.

Oh, there's it's heart.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.

[ laughs ] oh.

This is why I don't
have a girlfriend.

Darrin's personality's
definitely out there and crazy,

so if I met darrin
on the street,

it would be someone that I
would make my distance from.

I didn't sleep
at all last night --

maybe a minute here
and there, but I was just --

I don't know, just very
uncomfortable with darrin.

But I'm gonna keep my mind busy,

and I'm gonna try
to make a blanket.

Darrin: How's the
blanket coming?

It's kind of trial and
error, but we have time.

Most of the weaving I've
seen with the coconut fronds,

they leave them on the
stakes and splay them out,

and that holds them down,

and then you weave against them.

I mean, I don't
know how to do that,

so I'm just doing
the best that I can.

Want me to show you?

Um, I don't know.

So, you want to
make a blanket, right?

If you leave them attached
to the frond on one side,

then that holds it for you.

Then start tying
these ends together.

And then you can
start folding these over

and weaving them through.

And then just
ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.

I'd like to try things my way,

but darrin thinks he's
the expert on everything --

I mean, whether it's
how I cook bananas

or how I weave something.

Whatever I do, darrin
has a way to correct me,

so it's really annoying, but
we only have a couple days,

so I'm just gonna appease
him and just be calm about it.

I think he's the kind of person

that would keep
an argument going,

so I don't really
want to play into it.

You all right?

Mm-hmm.

You're really quiet.

I'm a little down today.

I feel really weak, and...

[ voice breaking ] right now,
I miss my family the most.

I think if I could at least
talk to them once a day,

it would be fine,

but just not hearing
from anyone is really hard.

Darrin just isn't a person

that I would spend
a lot of time with.

Here I can't distance
myself with him.

We're stuck
together, and that's it.

Darrin: When I'm
backpacking, I'm always alone.

It's always difficult
to work with a person

you've never met before,
and having to work as a team

every single day,
day in, day out,

especially if she doesn't have
too much skill or experience,

so I'd rather be
out here by myself.

Narrator: 18 days ago,
angela and darrin set up camp

on thailand's secluded
koh mook island,

with primitive survival
ratings of 6.1 and 7.8.

Angela has shown
great resilience

despite the island's
scarce resources

and her disdain
for her partner's

unorthodox eating habits.

Darrin: Sure you don't
want to try rat, angela?

No.

Darrin has proved to
be a skilled survivalist...

Thump, thump.

...But his strange behavior
has caused his partner

to distance herself from him.

An exhausting
extraction lies ahead,

and upon completing
the challenge,

their psrs will be reevaluated.

Darrin: You're really quiet.

Darrin: My partner, angela,
seemed very down yesterday,

and I didn't know if she
was upset at me or not.

I have no clue, truly,
what she's thinking,

but I heard some
coconuts fall last night,

and I might just take
a little walk back there

for a few minutes and
see if I can't find one.

Looked like there was one more
coconut on this tree yesterday.

[ milk splashes ]

I've been counting the
coconuts on the trees

so I know which ones fall off.

[ laughs ]

hey, angela? Yeah?

Told you I thought
one fell off that tree.

Oh, good.

Angela: I think darrin knows
that I'm really pissed off,

so he brought a coconut back,

and I think that was
kind of his way to say,

"oh, maybe I've done something.

I'm not sure exactly what I did,

but I could tell by your mood
that you're not real happy,

so I brought this coconut
as a peace offering."

thank you.

You're welcome.

Maybe I'm too
sensitive sometimes.

18 days, and I'm still
getting used to darrin,

and I'm sure darrin's
adapting to me

as much as I'm adapting to him.

I should just appreciate how
much he's trying to help me.

Wouldn't mind some rat bacon.

[ chuckles ]

[ machete chopping ]

for our extraction,

we think that we'll probably
have to swim a little bit,

so we decided to build
rafts out of bamboo.

So, we're just
gonna do two long?

Yeah, it'll just be two long.

Yeah, I think that
should be enough length.

'cause we don't want
to carry more than that.

Yeah.

Darrin: I know how to swim,

but I'm not a
long-distance swimmer,

and I don't know how far
I'm gonna have to swim.

Having a little flotation device

just makes it all that
much easier on me.

Two joints, and then
two or three wide.

That should make a
paddleboard that'll hold us up.

Okay.

We're here.

And that's the
cliffs right above us?

Yep.

So as long as we keep
those cliffs to the left of us,

it looks like they
lead us right out.

Narrator: To make
it to their extraction,

darrin and angela
must cross the island

on a hazardous three-mile trek

through the dense
and rain-soaked jungle

to this beach,

and then swim through
choppy ocean currents

to deep water, where
they'll be rescued.

[ rain pattering ]

angela: The rain is awful,

but it's keeping the
mosquitos out, right?

Yep.

Oh. I'm stuck. Hold on.

Angela: Our bamboo
rafts are so long.

I can't really
take a full stride

without banging into
the back of my calves.

Ooh, it's picking up.

Now it's really raining.

What do you think the
ocean's gonna be like?

Choppy?

Hope it lets up a
little bit, but we'll see.

I'm so anxious to
get to the water part.

I am really unsure
about how far the swim is,

and if the weather gets
worse, then it's more windy,

the chop is more severe,

and it will be way
more difficult to swim.

[ thunder rumbles ]

we made it.

Hey, look, there's our boat.

Oh, my god. It's kind of far.

Yeah.

This is really dangerous.

We're both really weak.

This looks really far.

And I don't even want
to think about sharks

and bad things
that might bite me.

Darrin: There's whitecaps
on some of the waves,

and the wind's picking up.

I'm not a powerful swimmer.

I do not have
swimming endurance.

Just swimming
into this little cove

when they dropped
me off blasted me.

It was hard for me,
and that was on day 1.

Oh, well. Suck
it up and go for it.

[ thunder rumbles ]

angela: When I run marathons,
my strategy is I see the end,

I am completely
focused on the end,

and I'm not stopping
until I get to that boat.

I think darrin
still has his raft.

I can't see it, but I can't
see it floating there, either.

[bleep] hurts really bad.
My hip popped out of place --

I'm not sure what to do, really.

He's getting drifted
away by the current,

and I'm not sure that I
have enough strength

to go swim back to him
and help him paddle back in.

Angela!

Hang on. I'm coming!

Oh, thank you.

Darrin: My partner did
not want to see me fail,

and she came and saved my bacon.

You're welcome.

Her help was insanely
beneficial to my success

in getting to that
boat, and without it,

you know, who knows
what would have happened.

Sometimes you need help in life.

Ocean swimming's no joke, right?

No, it's not.

Freaking -- that's the
hardest thing I've done --

I don't know, maybe ever.

[ both laugh ]

angela: I came here,

and my nails were polished,
my toes were polished.

I felt sort of human.

But I'm leaving here
completely stripped of all of that.

This experience has shown me

that two people
from different worlds

can work together and accomplish
something pretty amazing.

Darrin: 21 days
with a total stranger,

which is something I haven't
always been the best at

in my life, but it's something
I strive to improve at.

Angela: I did learn some
survival skills from darrin.

He has a great skill set.

I think he's just lacking
on the social side.

Darrin would stay here
forever if he had the chance.

He's really good at being
alone and k*lling things

and living off the land.

Start as a team,
finish as a team.

Yes! Thank you. All right.

We're going home.

Yep.

Let's get out of here.

Narrator: Over
the course of the 21

darrin's diet of
bananas and rat kebabs

kept his weight loss down
to a total of only six pounds.

Even though his loner attitude

didn't mesh well
with his partner

and he needed an ocean
rescue to complete the challenge,

darrin exhibited a vast
knowledge of survival skills.

As a result, his psr
rises from 7.8 to 8.2.

During her three
weeks on the island,

angela lost a
total of 15 pounds.

Angela may have struggled
with dealing with a bossy partner,

but her training as
an endurance athlete

was a big reason this team
was successful in the end.

Her psr increases
from 6.1 to 6.3.

Thailand's remote
koh mook island

was a worth adversary,

but these two survived
to tell about it --

naked and afraid.

Darrin: The rat was yummy.

I'm almost home,
ready to see the kids.

There's our house.

[ laughing ] oh!

Finally back home, and
we're making cookies.

Oh, there's my dad!

How many days did he
say I was gonna make it?

Oh, one. That's right, one.

That's half.

[ laughs ]

oh, it's you! Oh! How's my baby?

[ barking, whimpering ]

come here. Come here.

Aww.

You ready to go
to the mountains?

This is the good
life, the mountain life.

It's my life.
