anyone can survive
on this island at all.

this is really gonna happen."

I don't like being naked.
I don't sleep naked.

Last night, I slept naked,

and I woke up probably
every other hour,

panicking...That something
was around me in the room.

So, this is gonna be tough.

They are sleeping. I'm
not gonna wake them up.

I don't like doing goodbyes.

I usually leave when
everyone's sleeping.

[ snoring ]

it's just easier that way.

I don't feel like it's fully
set in exactly what's going --

what's about to happen yet.

I'm pretty sure
probably -- really?

Really? Really, dude?

I am gonna miss
this little fella, though.

I hope he's taken
care of while I'm gone.

Made it to mexico.

All along this way,
I seen these signs

that have "returno"
written on there,

which means,
basically, "turn around."

I don't know if that's a sign,

somebody trying to
tell me to turn around,

but ain't happening.

Narrator: Just off the coast
of mexico's yucatan peninsula

lies one of the most
hellishly inhospitable islands

on the planet.

In this remote landscape
of dense mangroves,

tightly packed vegetation
provides excellent cover

for the largest big cats in
the western hemisphere --

the elusive jaguar and
the vicious black panther.

It's the rainy season,

and storms of biblical
proportions saturate the land,

leaving behind
methane-spewing swamps

slithering with
four different types

of deadly venomous pit vipers.

Harsh, uninviting.

This is cayo venado.

Brandon: You know, I guess
this is the calm before the storm.

If you look at the horizon,
I think we got rain coming.

[ laughs ]

my name's brandon.

I'm from jonesboro, arkansas.
I'm an animal control officer.

I've spent every day, almost,
since I was 10 years old,

outside hunting and fishing.

I was in the united states navy

as an air crew
survival technician.

Since I've got out of the
military, I kind of got bored,

and I needed a challenge.

Basically, this is gonna
be like a fresh start,

like a reset button.

I'm here to test myself
and find out who I really am.

I've sacrificed so
much to be here.

I've quit my job.

I've left my boys,
my wife for 21 days.

Narrator: Brendan will benefit

from his experience as
a u.S. Navy team leader,

but his expert hunting
and fishing abilities

have not been testing in a
demanding, tropical environment.

He has been assigned

an initial primitive survival
rating, or psr, of 6.8.

If I could complete
this 21 days, watch out,

'cause there's nothing
gonna get in my way then.

Robin: I am nervous.

I almost feel like
I'm gonna throw up.

My name is robin.

I am a nurse,

and I'm a reservist for
the united states air force.

I do have a lot of
survival training.

Several wilderness challenges

that I've done
through the air force.

One of my weaknesses

is that I'm very passive
in a team situation,

so I hope that this experience

will help me step up to
the plate and be a leader.

Narrator: Even though robin

brings substantial
military survival training

into this challenge,

her passive attitude in a
team dynamic could hurt her.

This sets her psr at 6.9.

I think it's gonna be a
good combination of heaven,

and at the same
time, life in hell.

Uh, this just got very real.

gonna be very rough.

I don't even like being
naked with my husband

'cause it just makes
me feel awkward.

believe I'm doing this.

issues being naked.

In high school, I was the guy

in my group of friends
that was always naked.

Whoo.

It's time to party.

If me and my partner
don't get along,

it'll be a long,
miserable 21 days,

but I really don't see
that being an issue

because I'll find a way
for us to work as a team.

I'm from the world's
biggest team,

and if you try to
work as an individual,

yeah, you can succeed, but
it's so much easier as a team.

with highly trained
medical personnel

will accompany robin and brandon

and only step in if there
is an extreme emergency.

Narrator: Across the shallow
water from their insertion point

are the low-lying
mangroves of cayo venado.

Trekking through the
mangled vegetation,

robin and brandon can
either head toward high ground

in the center of the island,

hemmed in by two
dank and fetid swamps,

or continue all the way

to the open shoreline
on the other side.

You ain't seen any
sharks yet, have you?

No. You think any are in here?

Sharks do like to use
mangroves as nurseries.

Aww, there it goes.

-Ooh, you sunk deep.
-Yeah.

My boys were up in my throat.

I love the fact that my partner

the nature of teamwork.

I've never been in anything
like these mangroves before.

island's this rough,

I don't know where we're
gonna find a place to set up camp.

I cannot believe I'm
sticking my feet in this.

a chechen tree,

with the -- with the black sap?

Yeah, I remember
hearing about that.

Narrator: The chechen
tree, or black poisonwood,

produces a toxic sap

that can cause painful blisters
and even second-degree burns.

Robin: If any of that
black sap gets onto us,

it'll just be pouring
poison onto our skin.

It would be absolutely
miserable out here.

[bleep] ow.

That hurt.

It's opening up.

we're at the end of it.

Oh, my god, are we

going through my mind is,

into an interesting campsite.

Robin: Last night, I
saw something black.

It had four legs, and it
stopped probably, like, five feet

right in front of brandon
where he was sleeping.

We have no protection
from animals whatsoever.

Time to start building shelter.

Brandon: Absolutely.

There are pretty
good-sized wildcats out here,

so our first defense
is a really good shelter.

And we better be damn
sure we keep our fire going.

Here's our home. We
did an excellent job.

I'm really, really thirsty.

Brandon: We're basically
surrounded all by saltwater

except for this little section
200 yards to the swamp

in the middle of this
island that we're on is fresh.

This feels super slimy.

[ gasps ] eww.

I brought my pot to help
sterilize our drinking water.

The water looks nasty. Eww.

Smells like a rotten egg.

I don't even want to
walk through it barefoot,

so I can't even believe
I'm gonna be drinking it.

[ laughs ] is it refreshing?

[ laughs ]

it has a different taste to it,

I'll tell you that.

It tastes horrible.

[ slurps ]

it's like a really
bad vegetable broth.

It's a swamp broth.

There you go,
it's a swamp broth.

Damn it.

Um -- this -- this
is a chechen tree.

Brandon: Oh
[bleep] it is, isn't it?

Yeah. We built our shelter
under a chechen tree?

That's, like,
incredibly poisonous.

It, like, will sting your hand,

and you'll get a
black hole in your skin.

Okay.

We're gonna have to move.

If it rains, that's gonna
create huge complications

'cause that black sap
mixed with the rain

will just, like,
pour all over us,

and it's like poison oak, poison
sumac, and it's gonna be bad.

Oh, man.

I got that sap all
over my hands.

I got some of that
black chechen or shintin,

whatever it's called, sap on me.

I got it on my shins,
my toe, my arms.

Oh.

I got it everywhere.

Narrator: Chechen sap
acts like a very strong acid.

It eats at the skin, producing
running, scarring blisters.

Its glue-like consistency

makes it almost impossible
to wash off with water.

Another one like there.

Oh, look it, you are
starting to blister on that guy.

Are you in a lot of pain?

It hurts. It freakin' hurts.

If left untreated,
brandon's damaged skin

could become infected and
send him into septic shocked.

Concerned for his well-being,

producers send in the
team medic to examine him.

Why is it spreading so fast,

when I'm not even
touching anything?

Well, you already have it,

so it's just a question of
time when it's gonna react.

It's starting to
spread on my face,

top of my head and my ear.

With no treatment,
it's, like, game over.

At first, I thought I could just
power through it and be tough,

but then when my
skin started blistering,

that kind of threw up
a little red flag for me.

Your reaction is quite
-- quite aggressive.

The medic told me
that there was infection,

so he put some
kind of cream on it

to, I guess, just a last line of
defense against the bacteria.

Do you have any allergies?

I'm allergic to poison ivy.

Okay, chechen is kind of
like poison ivy, but worse.

Yeah.

Yeah, chechen is
like the worst of all.

You ever seen it
this bad before?

Just once.

With a white boy like me?

Yeah.

Brandon: I don't feel like

it's gonna hinder my
ability to survive out here.

I do feel like, though,

it's gonna make it a lot
more miserable for me.

I think we should do

I'm exerting a lot of energy.

It's very tiring
and frustrating.

These damn black-sap
blisters are k*lling me.

There's our home
for the next 19 days.

Robin did an excellent job.

The sun isn't being nice,

and I'm getting sunburned
more and more as we speak.

a bigger coconut.

I can't sleep because
of the damn black sap.

It itches, and it burns,

and it's worse than
poison ivy and poison oak.

It really is worse
because sap sticks to you.

There's nothing you
can do to get it off.

It's day 5.

There's the sunrise.

at what the chechen
plant black sap does to you.

It's gotten worse.

Even after the medical
attention I received,

it's just spreading everywhere.

All over my legs,
and it's getting to be

really, really, really
painful in my joints.

It does burn. It does hurt.

It does itch. It sucks.

The chechen sap is
just destroying my skin.

You are really having
an allergic reaction

to this all over your body.

I've been contemplating
whether calling the medic.

If he doesn't have
any treatment,

he's gonna be dizzy, headache.

He's gonna get fever.
He's gonna be throwing up.

I really feel like I'm
about to pass out.

Narrator: Because of the
severity of the chechen burns,

the medic has agreed
to allow brandon

to continue the challenge only
if he receives these injections.

Brandon: In a million years,
never would have thought a tree

would mess me up
like the way that tree did.

I hate the chechen. I hate it.

'cause I've never
been in this much pain.

Ugh.

Robin: I really hope
brandon gets better,

but I came out here to succeed,

so if I have to do it
alone, I will do it alone.

Brandon: I may be going through
pain, t*rture and tormented,

but I'm still hungry.

Not enough calories in coconuts,
and we've got to have protein,

so food is gonna be our
priority from now on out.

Robin: I don't like
being naked at all.

I was gonna make
myself a skirt, but instead,

I'm gonna make a fish basket
because I care more about food

than wearing clothes right now.

Basically what I'm doing is,

and if something grabs ahold
of it, I'm just gonna pull it out.

The hardest thing
right now is finding food.

You can't just live
off of coconut water.

I guess we'll see if this works.

I put a little bit of
coconut in there for bait.

I just hope brandon is

and he can help me get
some food for the both of us.

We're really
starting to need it.

My skin's burning

a plant that the mayans use

as an antidote for
the chechen burns.

And it's supposed to
grow in the same area

as the chechen tree does.

plant by our camp

that the mayans use to
make herbal medicine.

Man, I hope this works.

And here is brandon putting
chaca plant all over his body.

the chaca tree produces nectar

that can be used to neutralize

the acid-like poison
of the chechen sap.

Brandon: It kind of burns
'cause you got to scrub it hard,

but I can feel it.

sticking to me now.

Hopefully it works out.

Only time will tell.

This is, without a doubt, the
hardest thing I have ever done.

Yesterday, I almost quit.

My partner, robin, told
me to give it one more day.

Not a proud moment for me.

It was a lot of weakness,
you know, cowardness.

but how hard you can
get hit and keep on going.

I can get hit pretty hard
and keep on going, I think.

If this island wants a

sunrise. Kind of cloudy.

we're gonna be able
to get through this?

thing we can do

is just kind of suffer

The good news is, we
still got our fire going.

The number-one thing I hate
the most is being cold and wet,

and our fire is not
going very well anymore.

completely out of the game

from my chechen reaction.

Robin's not feeling too good,

and so it's my turn to
help take care of her,

and all our firewood got soaked
when our house blew over.

and wet like this anymore.

I know my limits,

and these storms are
definitely pushing my limit.

Narrator: Exposed to five
days of sub-60-degree rain,

robin and brandon are
quickly losing core body heat.

If they drop below
95 degrees fahrenheit,

hypothermia will set in,
organs will begin to shut down,

and their arms and
legs will lose all feeling

and start to spasm.

[ thunder rumbling ]

I am freezing, and
my toes are numb.

Mine, too.

I'm definitely getting
very, very concerned

about how we're
gonna be keeping warm.

As their body temperatures
continue to drop,

and with no dry wood
to start another fire,

brandon and robin's critical
condition prompts producers

to call in the team
medic once again.

So, how are you feeling, guys?

-Horrible.
-Horrible?

Robin: Mm-hmm.

My temperature is 34.2.

They're in the first
stage of hypothermia.

The body temperature
of both is too low.

I will need to give
you a space blanket.

All right, how cold are you?

Can you feel your toes?

Brandon: My feet and
my toes are hurting.

I've never put my body
through anything like this before.

I thought I would
be able to handle it.

I did for a while.

We're out of firewood and
water, and I'm not gonna make it.

I want this over.
I want this done.

I want to go home.

We came in this together,
and we're gonna leave together.

Narrator: One week shy of
completing their challenge,

robin and brandon are
forced to leave the island,

becoming the first survivalists
in "naked and afraid" history

to tap out together.

Brandon: We got complacent.

We didn't gather
enough firewood,

and we thought we could
just hunker out one more storm,

and actually, we couldn't.

We weren't prepared for it.

We failed miserably.

Go ahead, robin.

Robin: We supported each other,

every decision
we made out there.

There were situations
where I had to take the lead

and make the decisions,
and I became a better leader.

I achieved what I set out to do.

Brandon: Yeah, I
learned a valuable lesson

out here on the island.

No matter how big of a
bad a*s you think you are,

you can't fight mother nature.

Mother nature's a b*tch.

Narrator: Despite surviving for
only 14 days on cayo venado,

a severe lack of
food caused brandon

to lose a total of 25 pounds.

Brandon showed incredible
determination to carry on

in spite of debilitating
burns from the chechen tree.

But he and his partner
let their guards down.

Deciding not to shore
up their supply of firewood

left them too vulnerable to the
harsh, wet, and cold conditions.

As a result, brandon's
psr falls from 6.8 to 6.1.

Over the course of
two weeks in the wild,

robin lost a total of 16 pounds.

Robin stepped up and
was there for her partner

when he needed it most,

but she, too, fell
seven days short

of completing the challenge.

Her final psr also
drops down to a 6.1.

Robin and brandon
gave it a valiant effort

but learned the hard way
how tough it is to survive...
