06x03 - Rise Above

Post by bunniefuu »

Oh, this rain is cold.

I'm freezing.

Tell them that I want to go.

Like, I want to go
as soon as possible.

Narrator: one man...

Narrator: ...one woman,
exposed and alone...

It's scary.

...at nature's mercy
for 21 days...

Ah!

There's a bear
outside my shelter.

Narrator: ...with no food...

Please don't go.

...no water...
I'm hurting real bad.

Narrator: ...no clothes.

There's an alligator
down here.

Do they have the skill...
Fire!

...and the will to survive...

Captions paid for by
discovery communications

Been working pretty hard
at getting myself

Accustomed to being naked,

But I guess I have
to get used to it.

I am going out there to really
be the best that there is,

And I feel pretty confident
that I will be.

My friends always see me
as someone who

Can survive
the toughest situations.

I don't know what
I'm getting myself into.

Narrator: just four degrees
south of the equator,

The amazon rainforest is home

To the most biodiversity
on the planet --

Caiman, anaconda, and piranhas
skulk in the lagoons

While 2 million species
of insects

Attack from the ground.

But the greatest threat
to survival

Are the torrential downpours.

More than 80 inches of rain
per year drench the forest,

Leaving the jungle floor
a tangled, flooded mess

Of mud, roots, and debris.

This...

Is amazonia.

Jake: the question isn't
am I ready for the amazon.

The question is
is the amazon ready for me?

I'm jake nodar.

I'm 36 years old and I'm
from darnestown, maryland.

I have loved the outdoors
since I was a kid.

I feel pretty confident
in my hunting skills,

And anything moving
that's remotely edible,

I'm gonna k*ll it
and I'm gonna eat it.

I want to go out there
and prove that,

You know, a g*y guy
can be out here and do this.

You know,
we're not all cutting hair.

I'm very confident
that I will be able

To sail through the 21 days.

I'm planning on gaining weight.

Put that in your pipe
and smoke it.

Narrator: in addition
to his sense of humor,

Jake's lifelong experiences
as an outdoorsman

Leave him highly suited
to the challenge,

But his arrogance could
undermine his partnership.

He's been assigned a primitive
survival rating,

Or psr, of 7.3.

Jamie: I have to pee,

But I always have to pee
when I'm nervous.

I'm jamie little from the desert
in tucson, arizona.

I feel like
my whole life has been

In preparation
for this challenge.

I'm 5-foot, half an inch.

People mistake my size for
inability, but I am powerful.

I've always been
an adventure seeker,

Racing mountain bikes,
cross-country running.

And not only have I taught

Primitive survival skills
to teens,

I'm also a certified
wilderness first responder.

I worked hard to get here.

Tapping out's
not an option for me.

Succeeding
in this challenge will mean

That I can succeed anywhere.

I hope to gain a better
understanding of myself.

I'm in a transitionary period
of my life.

It's really gonna help me

With whatever I choose
to do after this.

Narrator:
as a wilderness therapy
instructor and first responder,

Jamie has managed every sort
of backwoods crisis.

But her own struggles
with indecision and self-doubt

Could compromise her success.

She begins with a psr of 6.0.

Jake: my whole life has led up
to this one moment.

Bye, clothes.

I'm nervous.

Pffft!

Yeah.

I am very comfortable
with my own nudity.

I'm shy.

When it comes
to my partner's nudity,

That's a different story.

I haven't seen a naked lady in
probably close to 30-some years.

So, whoop, there it is.

Jamie: I think being attracted
to my partner would be a bonus.

I can only imagine
what's gonna come next.

Jake: hi.

Hello.

Happy
to finally meet you.

-I'm jake.
-Jamie.

Nice to meet you,
jamie.

It's hard not to look
at all of you.

Yeah, it's fine.

Jake: I had to tell jamie
about 20 times,

"Eyes up here, sweetie,"
you know?

Should we look
at our sacks?

Narrator: as well
as a magnesium fire starter,

Jake and jamie have
each brought one survival item.

A little machete --
not so little.

How about you?
What did you bring?

-My kukri.
-Oh.

Seeing two knives
is a little frightening.

You know,
there's a handful of things

That would be really,
really nice to have out here.

So, do you have a map
in your bag?

-Yes, a map.
-Nice.

So, that's us.

Narrator:
to have any chance of survival,

Jake and jamie
must leave the predators

And boggy marshes
of the lowlands behind.

They'll push miles deeper
into the jungle

In search of dry terrain.

Do you do a lot
of outdoor activities?

-No, first time.
-Yeah?

- Just kidding.
-Way to ease yourself in.

This is not
my first outdoor adventure.

Jake: good.

-Yeah.
-I like that.

Looks like we got
some water to cross.

We're definitely
gonna have to think about

Some of the critters
that are gonna be in this.

Oh, perfect.
There's a piranha right there.

Jamie: jake said
he saw a piranha jumping.

I don't know,
it's kind of scaring me.

It's definitely a risk,

But we need to get across
to higher ground.

I just hope neither of us
have any open cuts.

*Bleep*

Something bit
the back of my leg.

What the *bleep*
is out there?

Ah, ah!
*Bleep*

Okay.
-Got it?

-Yeah.
-Good job.

Jamie: so far, I think that
we've got a good thing going.

We're jiving right now
as partners.

I'm not here searching
for romance,

But he's
a good-looking guy, too,

And that's a bonus for sure.

Holy smokes,
look at that tree.

Oh, my gosh.

Wow.

I think
that's lupuna tree.

That might be
the biggest tree in the amazon.

We could build
a platform in here.

Yeah.

And, like,
use the tree for sides.

Like, this looks
like home to me.

Yeah.

We don't have
any beverages to cheers,

But we can do
a stick cheers.

-Yeah, cheers.
-Cheers.

Home.

Jake:
we have got all the materials

We need for a great shelter.

It's just gonna take
a little bit of time.

I already feel
a blister, like, already.

I did one tree,
and I have a blister.

My first impressions
of my partner is she's great.

She's out there
working her a*s off,

So I like that about her.

Positive attitude
and a great work ethic.

That's all I can ask for
in a partner.

Jamie:
it's the end of day 1,

And we're still hard
at work at our shelter.

I don't know that this
is actually a shelter.

It's not a shelter.
We're on a platform.

We are
in a compost pile.

This is probably
the worst shelter

That anyone
has ever constructed.

Jamie: oh, my god.

It's just much better
when we're laying down

Because that way, our backs
aren't also being attacked.

So, like --
-just our fronts.

So, silver lining.

No children.

No, never been married.

I am
a flaming h*m*.

We're just really feeling
refreshed today.

We're excited.
It's day 2.

Refreshed?

I got a solid
15 minutes of sleep.

I think you got, like,
25 minutes of sleep.

Okay, it might've been 25.
I do feel amazing today.

It's really
a dream out here, honestly.

It's kind of everything
I was hoping for.

Well,
this is going well.

Yeah.

I kind of suspected
that jake is g*y,

And I feel, like,
more comfortable.

I know it's just day 2,
but, like,

I have this
really positive person

That's, like,
bringing out the crazy in me.

Like, the good crazy
that I kind of lost, like,

Somewhere, and we've been
having a lot of fun.

Jake: we have got the shelter
at least covered,

Which I feel
really good about.

Now we desperately need
water.

We're thirsty.

Jamie: we haven't had water
for a full day.

Going into this, I did say
that one of my fears

Was not having water.

Jake: I'm feeling the effects
of not having water, for sure.

Just taking
a little bit longer to focus.

We can at least get water
from the river and boil that

And at least get
something in us.

Of course,
we need to check to make sure

There aren't
any anacondas lurking.

Hopefully we won't get
attacked by a caiman.

It's just so creepy
not seeing the bottom at all.

Afternoon goal --

Must get a fire,
have to boil some water.

And I think we'll both feel

Quite a bit better
if we do that.

Jake:
hey, look, I got dinner.

Oh, nice.

That is
a meaty grasshopper.

-It is.
-Yeah.

I just need to get a fire going
and we'll be set.

Jamie: I'm trying to get
a good pile of magnesium

Because it's
a really good tinder.

We have this cotton stuff
that we've been drying out

From a tree, and this will
go on the top of the cotton,

And we'll start the fire
that way.

Jamie:
all right, ready?

Yes.

Think it burned
all the magnesium.

I've never not gotten
a fire this way,

But I've never been
in the rainforest trying.

Oh *bleep*

Sounds like thunder.

Oh, sh**t.

This stuff is so wet.

Jake: I need to get fire.

I mean, staying warm and dry

Is one of the biggest things
in survival.

Come on,
you little b*tch.

No, no, no, no.

-Oh, you *bleep*
-stay away.

The *bleep* amazon.

We are really thirsty,
and of course,

As soon as we get ready
to start our fire,

It starts raining.

Check it out,
check it out.

Oh.

Here, jake,
drink some water.

Just, like,
let it fill up and, like,

Taco it into your mouth.

This is, like, the best
rain taco I've ever had.

That's kind of amazing.

Oh, that tastes so good!

Jake: it was incredible.

I don't think I've ever been
so excited to be standing

Out naked in a rainstorm
drinking from a leaf.

But it was fantastic.

At least we got
some water.

-Yeah.
-At least we got some water.

Jake:
it's the morning of day 3,

And jamie's in kind
of rough shape.

She was shivering most
of the night last night.

Hi, jamie.

Hi.

Day 3.

Had a total
of 15 minutes of sleep

Since I got here.

Unfortunately with the amount
of rain that we got,

Starting a fire
is gonna be impossible.

-Oh, man, do you see this?
-What's that?

Crazy ant mess.

That is nuts.

They didn't bite you?

No.

Oh, *bleep*

I think I got a huge one
in my foot.

This one's deep.

Everything in the amazon wants
to k*ll me.

Oh, this rain is cold.

I'm freezing.

I really thought
that, like, we were gonna be

In an environment
where we could, like,

Not just survive,
but, like, thrive out here,

And this is not
a thriving environment.

Jake: I filled my leaf taco,
as jamie likes to call it,

Over and over and over again
and actually got to the point

Where my belly
started hurting a little bit.

Kind of worried that she
possibly missed out on that.

Hey.

I'm freezing.

Well, I mean,
rest as long as you can.

Are you?

Jamie: tell them
that I want to go.

Like, I just want to go
as soon as possible.

Jake: last night was definitely
the worst night so far,

Which we continue
to say each and every night,

Which is a little alarming
for the upcoming nights.

I'm really hungry.

And I'm really tired.

Jake: I am really concerned
about my partner.

We can't get fire,
it won't stop raining,

And jamie's breaking down.

If jamie is to tap out,

I think isolation factor's
gonna be huge.

So, my goal is to improve
the shelter dramatically.

I want it
completely enclosed,

Both for mosquitoes
and rain and warmth.

We need to re-angle the roof,
re-structure it,

Realign it so it's waterproof.

Hopefully shelter 2.0
will be a little bit warmer,

A little dryer,
and a little easier to sleep it.

Jamie: last night
when I was in the shelter,

I definitely wanted to go home.

Now that, you know,
it's nice weather,

It feels better,
but I know, like,

It's just gonna be another night
of not sleeping.

Jake: please don't leak.

For the love of god, don't leak.

We got a huge downpour
last night.

It poured buckets,

And I must say,
my roof was kind of amazing.

Perfectly dry.

How are you doing?

Um...

I'm getting tired.

Yeah, you seemed like you were
shivering a bit last night.

It was kind of scary.

Jamie:
I didn't sleep again.

The nights are freezing for me,

And there's
no way I could sleep.

I'm really hoping to take
a nap during the day today.

Jake: I don't want
to just sit in camp all day.

I want to be out,
I want to be active,

And I want
to be successful at this.

We need more fronds
for the roof of the shelter.

Our nights are miserable
between the mosquitoes and cold,

So we're fixing that.

I'm still planning
on taking the amazon by storm.

Mark my words.

The amazon's gonna be my b*tch.

Jamie: hey, jake,
if I'm gonna take a nap,

When do you think
is a good time?

I've got another load
or so,

And then maybe we can
figure out what time works.

Okay.

Kind of not sure what
to do with myself right now.

I really want to get some
repairs done to the shelter

Before night falls,
but she's in there sleeping.

I don't know --
part of me wants to wake her up

So I can make our shelter
better for the both of us,

But the other part of me knows
that she needs the rest.

But going out and picking six
leaves and considering it,

You know, one of her chores
for the day, that's b.s.

That is the kind of activity
I'd give to, like, you know,

A small child to make them feel
like they're doing something.

Jamie:
the shelter is, like, not 100%.

Definitely feeling some drops,

But much better
than being out there.

I just want to go out there
when it stops raining

'Cause I do not want
to get cold.

Jake:
it's starting to piss me off

'Cause I'm exhausting myself

Trying to get *bleep* done
for the two of us.

It's got to change soon.

Jamie: thanks for bringing in
all the bedding.

Jake: I do have to say, I mean,
you know, for seven days now,

You've been really cold
in here

But haven't done
a single thing about it,

And that's what upsets me,
you know?

If something's
really bugging me,

I go out and go after it
and solve it.

I don't just let it
take me down.

I think
I'm really feeling like

It's, like,
nothing's gonna help.

I'm gonna be cold
no matter what.

Well, I mean, that's the worst
attitude to have out here.

Everything is trial
by error.

If we know there's a possibility
that we're gonna be warmer

For the night, why wouldn't we
at least give it a go?

You know,
it's all kind of falling

On my shoulders right now.

I see that.

I'm gonna keep working.

Is there something
I can do right now?

I think it's more
mentality thing with you.

It's kind of like you're
just owning the misery

And being like, "whatever.

You know, it is what it is.

You know, we're not gonna be
able to make it any better."

And I think that's a *bleep*
attitude to have out here.

Okay.

Okay, good talk.

I'm not, like,
a back and forth drama person.

Sorry, I like to digest
what someone's saying

Before i, like, you know --
-that's fine.

I totally understand that,

But please digest
before 21 days is up.

That's all I ask for.

Jake: I needed her
to know that it's time

To *bleep* or get off the pot.

Jamie:
I think I worry about resting

So I can store energy for later.

But I just decided
that I'm just gonna tap

Into that reserve now,
and I'm gonna use it --

Just not worry about later.

Just worry about now.

Hey.

Jake: I come back
from cooling off a little bit,

And lo and behold, there is
jamie working her a*s off.

Just seeing her out there
working, you know,

For the first time really
in nine days --

Being a part of the team
is fantastic.

Let's get the hell
out of this.

Jamie: thank you
for putting me in my place.

No, I'm sorry.

No, I was like scared
of being cold,

And I shouldn't have been,
'cause, like, you're right.

It wasn't that bad.
-It's not.

I mean, it sucks,
don't get me wrong.

But just coming back and seeing
you busting your a*s --

That motivates
me so much more.

-Thank you.
-You're welcome.

We're gonna be good.

Jamie: I want to give it
everything I have.

Like, we're almost halfway
through our experience here,

And...

It's, like,
life lessons every day.

So...

Jake:
so, I was walking along

And almost put my face
right into this little guy.

If you look down too long,
you get a spider in the face.

And if you look up to long,

You get a snake on your ankle
or you step in an ant trail.

You have to be on your guard
constantly out here.

Jamie: and I have, like,
no calories in me.

Food is our biggest concern
right now.

Jake: it's kind of weird
because the mud right now

Is smelling just
like beef stroganoff to me.

Smells amazing.

My arms
are definitely getting weak.

My legs are getting weak.
I need food.

Holding up this diary cam
right now feels like

I'm holding up a frozen turkey.

This tree has these nuts
around the base,

And they have a grub growing
in them, most of them do anyway.

It's kind of like rainforest
popcorn, just a lot worse.

I'm not chewing it,
so it's probably crawling around

In my stomach,
which is kind of disgusting.

But I need protein.

Ah, damn it.
-What?

I found
a huge snail shell.

Oh, yeah,
that would be awesome.

Son of a g*n.

No food in the amazon.

Son of a b*tch.

Jamie: right now,
I'm making a little basket,

And I'm gonna bait it
with heart of palm.

So maybe a fish
will swim in there.

Jake: I'm starting to lose hope
in hunting here.

I still plan
to keep my eyes out,

But I think
most everything's nocturnal.

And as our energy drops
big time,

Trapping's a decent way to go --
you can set it.

It doesn't take a whole lot
of energy to make.

Jamie:
fishing is pretty new to me,

But I've heard that the fish
sleep near the shore.

So I have high hopes
for fishing here.

Jake: today, I'm working
on a figure-4 deadfall trap.

And then we'd set, like,

Either a piece of the palm fruit
or something here.

And then in theory,
the rodent comes along, hits it,

And gets crushed.

Narrator:
jake and jamie must get fire,

Or any food they catch
in their traps will go to waste.

Jake:
fire in the amazon is a b*tch.

It's becoming
a really difficult task

Because it rains constantly.

Who would've thought
in the rainforest?

Yeah, we have
several storms a day,

And even storing the wood,
the air is so humid

The wood ends up
really getting wet.

So it's a constant battle
just to get the materials dry.

Jamie:
there's like patches of sun,

And we dry out our tinder.

We have to chase the sun.

It's like, oh, in five minutes,
it's right there.

Okay, move everything.
Okay, move everything.

It's really difficult.

Jake: several of these items
we've been drying for days now.

So, hopefully, they're dry
enough to do the trick.

On the 10th day,
jacob created fire,

And it was magnificent.

Jamie: oh, my gosh.

Fire --
like, this is amazing.

It feels so good.

Oh, wow, it's dark out here.

Now that we've got the fire
going, I need to get some meat.

I am getting ready to give
night hunting a go.

Okay, I will.

This might be
the last time we talk.

Seems like most of the animals
here are out at night.

We haven't seen much activity
during the day,

But every night
we get into our shelter,

We hear all sorts of commotion
right around camp.

The scary thing is a lot
of these vipers out here

Match the color
of the ground cover perfectly.

My diary cam
is my only source of light,

Which is not strong at all.

Hopefully, we'll see something
before that something sees me.

*Bleep*

Jake: so, I am out
on my first night hunt.

*Bleep* *bleep*

I just about *bleep* my pants.

Good thing
I don't have pants on.

I don't know what it was,

But it sounded like maybe
a bird that took off.

But it was enough to scare
the bejesus out of me.

Oh, yeah.

So, I cut open this palm fruit,

And inside, there's just
this gross gooey substance.

Rainforest oysters.

Yeah, I mean, it's definitely
a different texture,

But it's kind of like
eating a jellyfish.

But beggars can't be choosers.

Getting to day 21,
even if I have to do this

Weird-tasting *bleep*

I am checking one
of the deadfall traps.

Something set it off.

Jamie: right now, I'm gonna go
check on my fishing basket.

Hopefully
there's something in there.

Jake: but nothing.

No fish,
but the basket's still intact.

Jake: the one tough thing
with these deadfall traps

Is if it's larger,
you need a significant amount

Of weight to crush the animal.

And out here,
we don't have rocks.

So if a larger animal had
set this off, you know,

A smaller log's
just not gonna do it.

Narrator: shelterbound,
over four more days of rain,

Jake and jamie have had no
opportunity to gather more food.

No.

Jamie: my partner, jake,
has lost a lot of weight.

Ooh,
blacking out a little.

Um...yikes.

I have had some moments
of blacking out,

And I'm staying very hydrated.

So I don't think that's it.

I think it's the fact
that I've gone days now

Without anything
of significant protein or fat

Or any nutritional value
really for that matter.

Jake: last night,
I was getting water,

And I stood up
and completely lost it.

It was probably, like,
I'd say a solid 25, 30 seconds

Where I had
no idea where I was.

-That's super scary.
-Yeah.

I don't want
to lose you.

Jake: I'm trying to get as much
done in the next day or two

Because I feel like my energy's
only gonna dip even lower.

So, our extraction point

Is definitely out
in the middle of water

In between anaconda
and piranha and caiman.

Yeah,
swimming does seem risky.

We should definitely build
a floatation device.

That's just gonna be
a big-a*s project.

The biggest step to getting
this raft done is finding

The correct logs that we're
gonna use that are buoyant.

Yikes.

That's not too encouraging.

I feel like there was
gonna be bamboo everywhere,

And there's nothing.

The search continues.

This one definitely
is much softer wood,

Which makes me very happy.

Timber.

Oh, come on.

Awesome.
That is just super.

Okay, that's gonna be
a week-long project.

Oh, dizzy.

Narrator:
hypoglycemic from lack of food,

Jake becomes increasingly dizzy
and confused.

Without sugar to fuel his brain,

His mental state
will only get worse.

Jake:
I hate feeling like this.

I am a very energetic person.

I love working hard.
I love working out.

And to be in this situation,
it's scary.

Don't go away.

Don't go away.

That's awesome -- it floats.
I'm excited.

Starting to black out
just a little bit.

I'm gonna just brace myself
for a second.

Jamie: I took some
of this cordage off already

For our raft,
but we're gonna need more.

Jake's lost a lot of weight.

I'm losing weight, too.

I'm really worried about him.

With the grub nuts,
I made sure that, like,

He ate more grubs than me

Just by, like, telling him
I already had some --

That kind of thing.

I mean, I'm hungry, too,
but I worry about him.

We're lacking nutrients,
and he's, like, bigger than me.

Jake: if you don't mind,

I'm gonna just put my feet up
for, like, five minutes.

-I don't mind.
-Okay.

Jamie: he really pushes
himself really hard.

He's completely depleted.

He has helped me a lot.

I want to be able to pull
the weight for our team.

So, I'm going to explore
a little bit further

From camp to look
for another food source.

And I want to get his energy
back up somehow.

Oh, my god.

Ah!

Oh *bleep*

Ah, ah, ah!

Ah, it really hurts.

It hurts so bad.

Get the "f" out of here.

Okay.

All right, we're off.

Holy *bleep*

Oh, I actually --
I actually know this fruit.

Holy *bleep*

I actually know this fruit.
Oh, my gosh.

See how it looks like an apple?

That's them.

They're called water apples.

These are actually one
of my favorite fruits,

And I just found them
in the amazon.

Jake's gonna love it.

Today might be
my favorite day ever.

I just had, like, a dream,
and it was reality.

You found some food?

Yes, just a little breakfast
in bed right here.

Oh, my god, it's huge.

That's not even a big one.
Just try it out.

-Oh, my god.

It is so good.

I've been concerned about you,
and I want you to feel good.

Even if the feeling
doesn't last, I want it.

Jamie: I feel just elated
that I'm the one

That can put a smile
on jake's face.

So, there's still some more
in the tree?

Yeah, they're high up.

-Okay, ready?
-Yeah.

-Okay, got it?
-Yeah.

You can step on my shoulder
if you need to.

It's raining apples.

Yeah,
right into the pile.

Whoo!

-Okay, you hanging?
-Okay.

Oh, my god,
your private parts

Are so close
to my neck right now.

Jake: if you would
have asked me a month ago

If there was gonna be naked lady
on my shoulders,

I probably would have said no,
but today there was.

I feel like I'm gonna *bleep*
my brains out tomorrow,

And I'm so excited
about that.

Okay.

Jake:
today, we have to finish

Building and testing out
our raft.

Tomorrow's extraction,

And if this thing doesn't float,
we're screwed.

Jake: although, now that we
have our super apples,

I'm just gonna do
the butterfly stroke

All the way out of here.

For sure.

Oh, my gosh.

There might be an anaconda
in this murky water.

This is scaring
the *bleep* out of me.

Let's just go out a little bit.
-Okay.

*Bleep*

What's going on?

Holy *bleep*
look at them all.

Oh, my god.

Narrator: starting with psr's
of 6.0 and 7.3,

Jake and jamie have struggled

To endure
amazonia's hostile environment.

Jamie has fallen victim
to cold and hunger...

I'm really hungry.

...but has found a way to boost
her partner in crunch time.

Jake's tireless efforts
have kept his team afloat,

But at a high cost.

Ooh,
blacking out a little.

Now he and jamie must
successfully pilot their raft

To extraction before their final
psr's can be tabulated.

Oh, my god.

-Holy *bleep*
-what's going on?

There's, like, 10 different
kinds of ants pouring out.

Ugh!

Holy *bleep*
look at them all.

-Oh, my god.
-Oh, my god.

Yeah,
you might want to get off.

Holy *bleep*

Look at the size
of this spider.

Where's my spear?

Oh.

Don't say, "oh."
That's protein.

Put that
on our grill later.

Yes,
we are seizing the day.

Jake: I'm not used to cooking
rotisserie tarantula.

It's all new to me,
but jamie and I have food,

And we are rocking it going
into this last day.

So bon appétit.

I'm gonna have
a little leggy.

Definitely get a charred-meat
flavor in there.

It tastes a little bit
like burning hair.

But a little protein
punch,

And check that off
the bucket list.

Jake: you ready to get
the hell out of here?

Yeah, let's go.

-I got the warrior hat.
-All right.

I feel like really just captures
my amazon warrior self.

So, it looks like we're gonna
have to go through

Quite a ways
of the marshy stuff.

Mm-hmm.

I think we'll be fine, as long
as the raft holds together.

Narrator: as they paddle through
amazonia's maze of lagoons,

Jake and jamie
must avoid entangling snags

And elude underwater predators

Before reaching
the amazon river.

There, they'll face strong
currents that can fling them

Far off course
of any rescue craft.

All right, I'm, like,

100% Nervous
about getting in this water.

Okay.
Oopsies.

Oh, that feels perfect
on my butt*bleep*

Jake: there are piranha,
there's anaconda,

There's caiman out here.

And you do have to take that
into serious consideration.

That's a nice cold rain.

It's freezing.

Are we stuck?

Yeah, definitely feels
like there's something.

All right,
I'm gonna get us out.

You want to try
to just paddle real hard?

Yep, I think
that's a good plan.

Ready, one --
start to the left, and...

Okay,
now going backwards.

Oh, oop.
Whoo!

Unstuck and on our way
to freedom.

Yes.

-I see a boat.
-Nice.

We're in the current.

Jamie: when we head
into the actual amazon,

The current is so strong,

And we have to get
to that rescue boat.

They're not coming to us.
We're getting to them.

Jake: when you don't have real
paddles, it's a huge challenge.

Synchronize
a little bit.

We dig those oars deep,
and we push so hard.

-Oh, my goodness.

As new challenges
come my way in my life,

I will reflect
on this experience.

This experience was
true hardship, and now I know

That whatever I'm faced with,
I can take on.

Bye.

Jake:
there is a lot of things

That I was not prepared for
at all out here.

And if you let that overwhelm
you, it takes you down.

But if you have the mind-set
to adapt and learn,

Then you can get
through any challenge.

Yes, high-five.

I don't know that I'd say

That the amazon
was entirely my b*tch.

I will say this --
if the amazon was a person,

It would be
this, like, really hot,

Beautiful, sexy, exotic woman.

And then you get to know her,
and she's just this huge b*tch.

Whoo!

*Bleep* you!

Narrator: over the course
of 21 days in amazonia,

Jake lost nearly 20%
of his body weight -- 38 pounds.

Though his health faded
and his patience suffered...

I mean, that's the worst
attitude to have out here.

...jake never stopped working.

As a result, his psr rises
from 7.3 to 8.0.

During her three weeks
in the rainforest,

Jamie lost 19 pounds.

While the rain and hunger
nearly destroyed her resolve...

I'm really hungry,
and I'm really tired.

...jamie recovered and collected
food vital to their success.

Whoo!

Narrator: her psr increases
from 6.0 to 6.7.

Crushing stereotypes
at every turn,

Jake and jamie leave no doubt
that they have

The right stuff to survive
"naked and afraid."

I don't miss the cold,
and I don't miss the rain.

This is home.

Definitely feels like the right
place for me to be right now.

It's looking like I came home
with quite a little souvenir.

Looks like I got
something sexy and exotic --

Something like a little dengue
or a little malaria.

My nurse came into my room
and brought me this party hat,

Which I was kind of excited
about until she told me

That it goes in the toilet
and she wants me to poop in it.

Let's just make
some magic happen.
