06x07 - Hell or High Water

Post by bunniefuu »

We got
a pretty serious storm brewin'.

We better definitely
batten down the hatches

Because it is startin'
to flood.

Holy cow.

We are cut off from
the production crew completely.

We better get outta here
as fast as we can.

Hold on!
Lindsay, you okay?

-Matt?!
-You okay?

-Narrator: one man...

-One woman, exposed and alone...

So scary.

...at nature's mercy
for 21 days...

-Ah!

There's a bear
outside my shelter.

-With no food...
- I'm so cold.

No water...

-Hurt real bad.
-No clothes.

There's an alligator
down here.

-Do they have the skill...
-Fire!

...and the will to survive

"Naked and afraid"?

Let's go. Kick it off
to the side. Let's go.

Captions paid for by
discovery communications

Matt: 21 days in thailand.

And I'm kind of in a moment
of shock right now

And have the realization of
what I'm about to embark upon.

And it is just breathtaking.

My name is matt.
I teach survival. I'm a guide.

And I also make
survival products.

I've always wanted
to test myself

And take myself to the extreme.

When other kids watched tv
and video games,

I was out in the woods,
teaching myself survival

And embracing everything
about the wilderness.

But I haven't spent one minute
in a jungle like this.

So bein' thrown out
into the unknown, naked,

Is gonna test me further than
I've ever been tested before.

Narrator: there's no questioning
matt's courage

And survivalist credentials.

But he has never pitted himself
against the brutal heat,

Rain, and wildlife
of the tropics.

This combination of factors

Puts matt's
primitive survival rating,

Or psr, at 7.8.

Matt: I have a lot
of hunting background.

This next 21 days, my approach
is gonna be traps, hunting.

I wanna go get out there

And hunt as soon as I can.

All right. Thailand,
let's see what you got.

This is insane.
I'm in the middle of thailand.

This is so crazy.

And this is so real.

My name is lindsay.
I love being out in nature.

I grew up basically
playing in the woods.

Before I had my son,

I was about 260 pounds.

And once I got pregnant,

I really started watching
what I ate.

After I was able
to lose about 100 pounds,

I started setting
these challenges for myself.

My motto is, "what does not
k*ll us only makes us stronger."

I see these cows,

And all I wanna do is play
with them and pet them.

The last thing
I wanna do is, uh, eat them.

I am not a vegetarian.

And I have no problem whatsoever

With my partner out here
hunting.

But I don't like to eat meat.

I don't like the texture of it.

I don't like the taste of it.

I definitely have issues
with that.

Narrator: lindsay has
extensive outdoor experience

And a determined attitude,

But her reluctance
to eat calorie-rich meats

May hamper her survival chances.

Lindsay's initial psr
is set at 6.1.

I guess it's now or never.

I'm doing this for myself

But also to show girls out there
that it is possible

For you to be heavy,
lose weight,

And still do things like this.

I'm not gonna be
the typical girl on the show.

It is what it is. And at the end
of the day, that's who I am.

So take it or leave it.

-Hello.
-Hello.

I'm guessing your my partner.

I am. I'm lindsay.

Lindsay, I'm matt.
Good to meet you.

Nice to meet you.
Nice meeting you.

-How -- how was your journey?
-Uh, long.

-Yeah.
-Uh...

It is.
Thailand is amazing.

Oh, my gosh.
It's gorgeous.

Look around.
I am so excited.

-Ready to go.
-Oh.

-I brought my knife.
-Oh, sweet.

I actually -- I actually
custom-made this knife

Just to kick butt in the --
in the jungle for us.

Oh, nice.

I got my tarp,
which is super awesome.

Nice.

I figured we could use it
for our shelter.

Lindsay: I have hypothyroidism,

So my body
doesn't regulate heat properly.

My body needs the tarp
to stay alive out here.

We, uh, we -- we also have
a fire starter.

-Oh.
-A magnesium fire starter,

So that'll be handy.
-And I also have the map.

Oh, nice.

Narrator: matt and lindsay
have been dropped off

In thailand's rugged
banthat mountains,

Near the base of the powerful
sai rung waterfall.

In 2007, 39 people died

When a flash flood swept
through this narrow river gorge.

Locals believe
the waterfall is cursed.

Narrator: matt and lindsay
must also keep close watch

For powerful pythons,

Marauding wild boars,
and deadly tigers

That could bring
their 21-day survival challenge

To a fatal conclusion.

I say we go ahead
and head upriver.

Yeah, let's head up there,

Find someplace to set up
for the night.

All right. Sounds good.

Get -- uh, here,
I'll help you up.

Hmm.

I know. I see your hand.
-No?

I appreciate the gesture.

Ill just
pick you right up.

-You can't pick me up.
-Oh, of course I can.

I'm too heavy.
All right.

Thank you, muscles.
-See? Told you.

All right.

First impressions of lindsay --

She seems like she's got a great
demeanor, very good attitude.

She's obviously overcome
a lot of obstacles out here,

Which bodes well
for her survival chances.

I feel like there's gonna be
a good partnership between us.

So where'd you come from?

Um, I'm from michigan.

From michigan? Nice.

-Yeah, where are you from?
-I'm actually a --

A hunting guide
out in colorado.

Oh, nice. Oh.

So when you're not runnin'
around naked in thailand,

What do you do
for work at home?

Um, I work
in customer service.

So you gotta
deal with people.

-I do...
-Oh, man.

...which, I'm sure
you'll find out shortly,

That I'm not really
a people person.

-Uh-oh.
- No, I'm joking.

Lindsay: matt and I are
getting along quite well.

He's a bit sarcastic.
I'm extremely sarcastic

So, so far, so good.

Hey, the rocks are slippery.

I was about to say, "there's
a waterfall right there,"

And I forgot to walk,
I think.

Whoo-hoo!

Dude, you know,
it's getting close to, uh, dark.

-It definitely is.
-We gotta...

You know this --
this right here...

-It's flat.
-It could -- it could be home.

It's close to resources,
close to, you know,

A patch of bamboo up there.

-Water's not too far away.
-I think, uh...nope.

It'll be a good spot
for us to...

-Call home?
-Uh-huh.

We're gonna get wet.
But we have the tarp,

So at least we can...
-Oh, definitely.

...have an area
to keep the firewood dry.

That was -- that was -- that was
a good move bringin' the tarp,

By the way.
-Thanks.

We should raise the bed
up off the ground.

-Oh. Oh, definitely.
-I say we start clearing it...

-Yeah.
-And try to find some bamboo.

Sweet!
- Bam!

Matt: it is gettin' dark
real quick.

We're gonna need to definitely
get this started for sure.

Yeah.

That's a pretty nice knife.
-Oh, thanks.

You're -- two whacks,
and it's down.

I made it to conquer the jungle,
or at least try to.

Oh, be careful.

I don't need you chopping
your leg off the first day.

I need you, at least,
to help me build the shelter.

I got a second leg.

I would say
the chemistry with, uh,

Lindsay and i, you know,
it's goin' pretty good.

I can already tell she's got
that big-sister vibe,

Which is fine, honestly.

As long as I get to hunt,
I'm down with anything.

Can you, uh, cut those
without chopping my arm off?

Ah! Perfect.

Matt: light's fadin' fast,

And gettin' this done
is not lookin' good.

You're just covered

In these little fire ant,
termite, pincher bug things.

So we gotta get
our shelter done.

Matt: you know, I'm a little
disappointed in the fact

That, you know, we're --
we're essentially sleepin'

On bamboo stacked
on a couple logs.

I envisioned myself
gettin' it done a little faster.

-That's it, huh?
-Our beautiful palace.

Night one, I'm tired.
I wanna go to sleep.

Luckily, the tarp's big enough
for us to just be for the night.

Our bed's kinda half-a*s
there right now.

It's as good
as it's gonna be, I think,

For tonight.
-Yeah.

Night one. It's the middle
of the night.

Bamboo. Right here.

I don't know if you can
see that. Horrible bed.

Thailand bamboo bed t*rture.

The sun's just startin' to come
crackin' up a little bit.

And, uh, it's time
to go out on the hunt.

I wanted to get out there and --
and see what I could find.

We needed to try
to replenish some calories

That we, uh,
burned for sure.

There's a little lizard.

Strike.

Missed him with the rock
but confused him.

I brought lunch.

Really? Hmm.

This is
kinda standard protocol

For jungle -- jungle life
on these little lizards.

You can't really cook
their tail.

I was gonna give you
some added protein

And let you bite
the tail off.

Oh, no.
I don't eat meat.

Meaty little suckers.
Okay.

I'm just gonna eat the tail,
if you don't mind, then.

Oh, no, you...have at it.

And how does that taste?

Does it taste like chicken?
-No, this tastes like lizard.

Oh.

Hey, look at that.

Do a little cpr. Lizard cpr.
Go...

Oh! Oh! Oh!

Did you see him walk?
-Yeah.

If you give him cpr...

No. He's not dead.

He's dead.
No brain function whatsoever.

-That's just no nice.
-It, uh,

It just takes a little blood
and pumps it through his --

His heart.

And his little lizard nerves
just decide to move.

He's gonna haul off
and bite you.

No.

Do you want me to keep
doin' it or...

No. I-i don't.

I...really the moment
has passed and I'm good.

Okay.

Are we gonna play
with the shelter?

Yes.

There is a, uh,
definitely a lot of real

Seriously biting insects
on the ground here.

So we definitely
gotta get elevated.

There's a couple trees here
that are strong enough.

We'll use those
as the cross pieces.

And then we'll use the bamboo
for these like we did here.

And, uh, I think
we should be all right.

That's pretty much...
We're pretty much on it.

And, uh...
-So I guess, though, like,

If it's daytime,
it could be like a...

-Yeah. We'll just flip it back.
-Yeah.

-Yep.
-Sweet.

Lindsay: I'm not hungry yet.

I just know I need food
to have energy.

Matt: lindsay's aversion to
eating animals is pretty clear.

So if I don't wanna end up
alone out here,

I need to help her find
some other food sources.

This appears to be wild figs.

And, uh, I don't think
they're quite ripe yet.

However, we don't have time
for 'em to ripe,

So eat a little just to see

If it's gonna affect us in, uh,
in an adverse way.

If it doesn't, we, uh,
we'll get a little food.

We've got a...
Some figs to eat.

Thank you.

All right. Well, cheers.

These taste like, uh...

-Nothing.
-Like...

-Nothing.
-Like you're eating material.

Mmm. Yummy.

That one I just had...
Unripe one. Crisp.

That looks like
not ripe at all, so...

No. It doesn't look good,
that's for sure.

You know what would be nice?

If we could google
how to ripen figs faster.

Bloop! Uh, yes, siri?

How do you ripen figs
so they taste better?

She's like, "calling mom."

I'm guessing that nothin' out
here is gonna taste fantastic,

But I'm glad we found
a food source that isn't meat.

These figs are really gonna
keep me going for a while.

Let's, uh, venture on here.

All right.

Why are you going that way?

Uh, I need to check it out.

I haven't gone this way yet.

Oh, okay.

Have fun with that.

I'm not feelin' too good.
Ate those un-- unripe figs.

Ugh. I think I'm gonna puke.

Matt: stomach is
just -- just rippin'.

Feel like I just
been kicked down a mountain.

Ugh.

Ugh, I think I'm gonna puke.

Ate those un-- unripe figs.

Matt: feel like I just
been kicked down a mountain.

Ugh.

One thing I'm prettys sure of is
my stomach won't reject fish.

Narrator: matt starts work
on a fish trap

While lindsay tries
to settle her stomach.

So you see, uh,
visions of...fig forests?

No. No.
Let's not talk.

Quiet time?

We're playing
the quiet game.

Yeah. Well, I've never
liked quiet time.

Just never --
I never was very good at it.

Good old quiet --
-you lost.

Let's start over again.

But it thought we were joking
on actually having quiet time.

You're -- you're -- you're --
you're really not doing good

With this game at all.
-It, uh...

Matt does not stop talking.

But I know he's trying to help,

Keeping my mind
off of other things.

And I appreciate that
he cares enough to bug me.

I don't think you've ever
participated in a quiet game.

Well, I've never won
a quiet game.

Now, I am fairly good

At annoying the *bleep*
out of people

When I'm on my "a" game.

How am I doin' so far?

Still got it. Still got it.

I feel like crap.

Um, I had diarrhea yesterday.

And I just thought
it would go away.

But then I had it
throughout the night.

And now I'm to the point
where I'm just really weak

And tired and shaky.

And my stomach is k*lling me.

Matt: today, I'm gonna go
and get us some heart of palm

To help lindsay out.

And that way, she's able to, uh,
to eat a little bit,

Hopefully get some --
get some energy.

Lindsay: I haven't felt 100%
since the, uh, fig.

But I've just been trying
to get through it

Thinking it would just go away,
but it got worse today.

All that work
just for that little piece.

There'll be a little more
in this one.

This one's a good one.

Just gettin' something
in our stomach is fantastic.

It should be...

Very high
in nutrients for us, too,

So gonna help keep us goin'.

I need a minute. Like...

You've had about a one --

Like, a half a celery stick
worth right now.

I'm kind of on lindsay's a*s
about she's gotta eat.

She's gotta eat more.

And she's eatin'
these little amounts

And she says that's fine.

I can tell it's probably makin'
her stomach turn a little bit.

But the only way for her
to get over what she's got

And get back in the, you know,
game of survival

Is for her to eat.

-This tastes very bland.
-It does kind of taste...

...which my stomach right now
needs something very bland.

Yeah.

If matt and I would have met
on the outside world,

I probably would've just assumed
that he was, you know,

Just the macho type
or whatever.

But after being out here
with him,

I can see he's really tryin'
to take care of me,

And I really appreciate it.

Matt: ugh. Today, I'm drained.

Came in this weighin' --
weighin' 230-some pounds.

It, uh, that's a lot of calorie
intake I need every day.

Narrator:
with their bodies weakened

From the unripened figs,

It becomes crucial that matt
and lindsay quickly find food.

Matt: all right.
Let's check the trap.

God, I hope
there's somethin' in here.

Oh-h*.
That is definitely an eel.

Oh, son of a...

You son of a b*tch.

Ugh!

Oh, he found a --
it found a hole.

Ugh.

That right there is a good meal.

Probably 250 calories.

That right there would've
kept us goin' through the day.

Lindsay: matt, he's a hunter.

While he's out hunting,

My primary function
is to make sure

That we have water
and to make sure

That we have firewood available

And find some sort
of plant food for myself,

Because figs clearly
are not an option.

Holy *bleep*. I see dinner.

Lindsay, you will not believe
this *bleep*.

What?

Can you pin him
with that thing?

That's a big-a*s snake.

-That was his head.
-Okay. Oh, my god.

-Aah!
-Ah! Oh!

Hell, yeah!

Now, the thing with snakes
is they can still bite ya...

-Yeah.
-Well after. So...there you go.

Definitely not
a venomous snake.

This is food right here.
Yes!

Oh, that's so crazy.

High five!

-You have blood on your hand.
-Oh, this is...

-We're not that close yet.
-Oh, yeah.

Oh, you gotta...it's gotta
become one with the snake.

No! No, no, no! No! No!

You just gotta kinda let it
do its thing.

Okay. Okay. Okay. No, I got it.
I got it. I got it.

And then it's a good handle?
Okay.

Go -- go grab
your -- your stick.

-Okay.
-Go grab your stick.

You feelin' all right?

We're almost back.

This guy here is gonna give --
give you energy again, 'kay?

We're gonna get some nutrients
in there for ya,

Get you back in action, okay?

I felt like I was
gonna pass out.

I was, like, seeing black spots.

Uh, this is just
from being worn out

And, uh,

And I probably
should drink more water.

And then I'll be good to go.

That was good.

Right now, this is our life,

Our survival.

This is tricky for me 'cause
I'm just not a meat-eater.

I just don't do it.

You have to eat
that piece at least.

-No.
-Yeah.

-No.
-You never know.

This could be our last meal.

Lindsay:
I hear what matt is saying.

And trust me, I'm starving.

But the idea of eating a snake,

Putting it in my mouth...
And, uh, I just can't do it.

I mean, I understand that
you probably don't like it,

But...

What we're in is -- is serious,
as serious as you can get.

-Matt: it's about to get ugly.
-Lindsay: holy cow.

We are cut off from all
rescue services completely.

Do not go near the river
under any circumstances.

Matt: we better get out of here
as fast as we can.

Matt: you wanna see
my awesome idea?

No, you're not gonna swing
like tarzan.

Don't. You'll knock me down,

And I'll get --

Don't.

You know that's awesome.

-Are you done?
-Not quite. Ready?

-No, you're gonna...

Aah! Matt, you're gonna fall
on my head, dingbat.

I have become one
with this jungle.

Ugh! Jeez. Oh, pete.

Narrator: thanks to the snake
meat, matt finds new energy.

But lindsay's refusal
to eat either snake or lizard

Is starting to take its toll.

I know that part of my weakness
is just not eating.

I'll probably just get weaker
as time goes on.

And the truth is,
this is a lot harder

Than I thought it would be.

Really?

Oh-h*.
That's not much.

But you gotta take
everything you can get.

I really wanna vamp up
getting more food.

And, uh, lindsay,
she needs to have calories in

To get some energy.

I just hope to find food,
period,

Because you lay around
in survival, you die.

That's the bottom line.

Where'd you go,
you little *bleep*?

I have seen some little critters
scurryin' around.

And I need to, uh, I need to cut
some deadfall traps and snares

And get them working all,
you know, 24/7 for me.

Makin' deadfall traps is
a, uh, passive way of hunting

While you're actually out
doin' other things

And, uh, give you an, you know,

Extra opportunity to find game.

-How long does it need to be?
-7 Inches.

A girl 7 inches
or a guy 7 inches?

-A, uh, a true 7 inches.
-Okay.

A girl 7 inches, got it.

All right.

And essentially all it is,
prop a rock up,

Animal goes under,
touches the stick,

Down it goes.

And we'll put that back on it.

Anything kinda comin'
around our bed sniffin', boom.

It's actually pretty windy
at the moment,

And a lot of thunder
right behind me.

Hey, lindsay, we got
a pretty serious storm brewin'.

We better definitely batten down
the hatches because...

Oh, it is --
it's about to get ugly.

Yeah.

Matt: this storm is
a son of a b*tch.

It's cold.
It's, uh, real cold.

I am freezing right now,
very, very, very cold.

I'm trying not to shiver
'cause I don't want to, um...

-Burn the calories.

I appreciate lindsay's,
you know, good spirit

And good morale
and, uh, strong --

Strong mental fortitude
through this whole thing.

It's probably 9:00
in the morning.

It's just comin' down.

It's been comin' down
since last night.

Days like this,
I miss my girlfriend.

It's like that --
it's that, you know,

Stayin' home all day,
relax, rain day,

Snuggle on the couch.

And instead, uh,
we're just hunkered in.

Rainin' like
a son of a b*tch again.

Narrator:
on the storm's fourth day,

The rain suddenly intensifies.

The river,
which locals fear is cursed,

Now rises and swells,

Conditions that could produce
another catastrophic flash flood

Like the one
that claimed 39 lives

Only a few years ago.

Matt: *bleep* is getting real
today.

The, uh, definitely,
biggest concern I have is flood

Because, as of right now,
it's a, uh,

It's an incredibly dangerous
river to mess with.

Yep. Dam's startin' to flood.

Not cool.

All right.

The, uh, the waterfall is...

-Angry.
-Real angry.

It's absolutely just --
just roarin'.

You can almost feel it
in the ground right now.

So it's...
It must be pretty damn big.

Holy cow.

That's a lot higher.

Yeah.

Narrator: the rapidly rising
river cuts matt and lindsay off

From their production team.

The water's
really comin' up.

It's running muddy,
comin' up about a foot

In the last 5 minutes.

Narrator: if anything goes
wrong, they're beyond rescue.

Do not go near the river
under any circumstances.

We better get outta here
as fast as we can.

Holy cow.

It's gonna be a bad spot
in a flash flood.

Yeah.

Do not go near the river
under any circumstances.

You understand that?
Do not go near the river.

Matt: we are cut off
from the production crew.

We're also cut off
from all rescue services,

Any, uh, first aid responders.

I mean, we're cut off
completely.

Like I said,
I just want it to stop.

Stop raining.

Right now,
if anything went wrong,

We would have to wait
for the water to subside,

Which, at this point,
it's still pouring rain.

Yeah.

There's no way
for anybody to get to us.

If we got seriously injured
right now,

We could potentially die
because they're --

The hospital is on
the other side of a raging river

That we would not be able
to cross.

Right now, it is just
pelting like crazy.

The temperature has dropped down

Far colder
than we've had before.

It, uh, it's actually
quite miserable.

Should be getting better for us.

The weather's just
getting worse.

I mean, it is comin' down.

Narrator: cut off
from any chance of rescue

By 6 straight days of rain,

Matt and lindsay
burn precious calories

Shivering to stay warm

And have no way to replace them.

I can't hunt.

I can't make fire to cook

Whatever I might catch
if I hunt.

I don't know about you
over there, but I am hungry.

I'm starving.

Come on, thailand,
work with us here.

Work with us.

Matt:
we definitely need more food.

Definitely feelin' hungry.

Body's, you know,
body's definitely

Feelin' the effects
of the lack of calories.

We don't get some more
substantial foods, you know,

Soon here, it's gonna be...

It's gonna get bad.

* Ahh *

Sun is a-shinin'.

Whoo-hoo!

First thing this morning,
woke up, look up,

And a blue sky.

That sun comin' out is
vitally important

Because that's when the animals
also come out, you know?

They need to go out.
They need to forage.

They need to find food.

You know, we have to eat
to keep our --

Keep our bodies goin'.

And, uh, that's gonna
be the main goal for today.

I feel like *bleep*.

Um, I feel really weak.

Extraction's comin' around
the corner, day after tomorrow.

It's gonna be a long journey.

It's gonna be
some treacherous terrain.

And I'm currently
the weakest I've been,

So I absolutely have
to find us some protein.

We got --
we got a frog over here.

This, uh,
this frog's not movin' at all.

I hit him hard,

And he disappeared.

Pretty sure it knocked him down,

Stunned him,
maybe even k*lled him.

And then I lost him
in the turbulent water here.

Ugh. It's frustrating.

So I'm making, like, a blanket.

At night, this is
gonna definitely make us sleep

100 Times better.

You know, I just feel
like I'm shivering constantly.

So it'll feel good.

Let's hope
the fish trap has somethin'.

I am lookin' exactly
where I dropped that fish trap,

And...

I do not see the fish trap.

It was there.

*Bleep*.

I figured there was no way that
the water could come hard enough

Through this little,
protected spot,

But the fish trap is gone.

It's gone.

And, uh, which --
which just sucks.

It just makes me -- makes me
sick to my stomach

Knowin' how hungry we both are,
and that that most likely

Had some well-needed protein
in it.

Did you hear that, lindsay?

Deadfall trap went off.

So let's see
is somethin' happened.

Oh, bam.

We got a rat in the deadfall.

Huh.

He is -- he is flat.

Matt: caught a rat
with the deadfall trap.

We're gonna be
very careful cookin' him.

Rats are real notorious
for carryin' rabies,

Uh, hantavirus.

We're gonna have to make sure
we cook him, you know,

Definitely well done,
we eliminate any kind of risk

We would have of --
of gettin' any of these.

Ugh.

You gettin' excited
about eating that rat?

This anticipation
is killin' ya.

k*lling me.

'Cause you at least
have to eat --

Eat a hind leg
and a front leg.

Narrator: over the course

Of 20 days
in the south thailand jungle,

Matt has proven himself
a formidable hunter

And valuable partner.

Meanwhile, lindsay's reluctance
to eat meat

Combined with a bad bout
of stomach sickness

Has greatly reduced
her survival effectiveness.

An angry river still stands
between them and safety.

Their ability to navigate
its treacherous waters

Will determine their ultimate
primitive survival ratings.

This anticipation
is killin' ya.

'Cause you at least
have to eat --

Eat a hind leg
and a front leg.

Okay.

You gotta eat.
-No, I can't.

Just eat the rest of the actual
main chunks on there.

You need --
you need the protein.

That is quality.

I'm just tellin' ya right now,
that's delicious.

It's got sort of
a smoked brisket taste to it.

Right?

One -- one of my biggest
challenges out here

Is definitely eating meat.

Did I ever in a million years

Think I'd be putting
a dead rat in my mouth?

No.

But at this point,
I really don't have a choice.

And whatever he catches,
I just have to eat

Because I'm getting so weak.

I'm impressed that you're --

You're goin' outside
your comfort zone

And now eating a rat.

I'm not.
I'm eating brisket.

Beef brisket.

I'm definitely, uh,
very proud of lindsay.

She's got some big hurdles to go
through trying to eat meat.

And she knew
she needed some calories

And, uh,

And she just -- she just
kind of jungled up

And actually ate
quite a bit of it.

The ears
are kinda crunchy...

But good.

You want any?
-No.

-Oh.
-No, I do not.

Oh-h*-h*.

Hello, day 21.

So, we gotta get our butts

All the way down here

Until we see a bridge.
-Yep.

Walkin' through any of this
is steep side hills.

-Yeah.
-The thorn bushes. Sucks.

Definitely out best bet's
gonna be

On the river itself
a lot of times.

I think we need
to make a raft.

We should be able
to lash that together

Out of our own bed.

Yeah.

Narrator: matt and lindsay
will first have to bushwhack

Through 3 miles of jungle,

Then navigate 2 miles of rapids
on an improvised raft.

If rain falls
on the highlands above them,

They'll have no escape
from the resulting flash floods.

Finally, upon reaching a bridge,

They must exit the river
immediately

To avoid cascading
over a series of steep dams.

Let's see what we can do
with this bed.

Lindsay: our plan is to make
a raft out of our shelter,

Out of our bed.

And I'm kinda tired
of being naked.

I'm gonna go ahead
and finally make some clothes.

Pretty simple, uh,

I'm just gonna make, like,
a skirt-type thing, uh,

And then a top.

Matt: the raft will be
a small size.

It's just somethin'
that we can grab on to,

Like, a, uh, it's almost
like a life jacket.

Lindsay: I'm a little worried
about the trek

That we have to make.

I wanna be able
to pull my own weight today,

But I know that it's gonna
be very slow going.

Well, it's not bad,
considering.

All right.
See ya later, camp.

It's been real.

It's been rat-tastic,
but we gotta go.

I don't know what lindsay's
capabilities are in the water.

To think about us tryin' to get
in that river with that raft,

It definitely scares me
because not only

Am I lookin' after myself,

But I also have
to look after lindsay.

Lindsay: I'm very nervous
about this.

And, uh, all you gotta do
is come down,

And I'm gonna
give you footing.

21 Days,
I haven't let you down yet.

Take this foot,
put it over here.

I got it. I got it.
I got it.

Perfect.

Ah. h*-h*.

Oh, yes.

Screw you, thorns.

Whoo.

Ugh.

I tell you, this jungle
is never-ending.

Yes.

Narrator:
matt and lindsay now enter

The riskiest part of
the extraction.

I think we can just
kinda float down here.

Narrator: as the river courses
between boulders,

Opposing currents
create powerful whirlpools,

Which have drowned swimmers
in the past.

Hold on! Hold on!

Aah!

Matt?!

Lindsay!

Are you okay?

You okay?

I'm fine!
You almost went off the ledge!

We gotta go get the raft.

We got this.

Oh, look, it's a bridge!

Let's go!

Ugh.

Come on.

We got it.
-Ugh.

-A truck.
-Oh, that's gotta be it.

-It's runnin'.

Now we're gettin' in it.

Lindsay: this is the end

To a very, very long
and rough journey.

I couldn't have made it through
without matt.

But 10 years ago,
there's no way in hell

I would've been able
to do this at all.

Whoo-hoo!
-Whoo!

Ugh!
Physically, I would've liked

To be a little bit more in shape
and ready for the challenge.

But this is a mental challenge.

And it just made me feel

Like I could accomplish
just about anything

I put my mind to after this.

Matt:
lindsay earned my respect.

She was strong enough
to make 21 days.

This experience is somethin'
that changed my life forever.

I don't have to wonder
if I can survive by myself...

-We got this!
-Because I just survived 21 days

And also supported someone else.

Yeah! We did good.
-Oh!

Matt: ow!

Narrator: over 21 days,

Lindsay battled food poisoning
and lost 20 pounds,

But her toughness
and adaptability

Boost her final psr
from 6.1 to 6.5.

Matt dominated the thai jungle

And paid a high price,
losing 36 pounds.

Single-handedly k*lling
enough food

To sustain
both himself and lindsay,

Matt raises his psr
from 7.8 to 8.7,

Proving that both matt

And lindsay can endure
21 days naked and afraid.

Matt: eat a rat today,
live tomorrow.
