I started getting into survival

And learning
about primitive living

around 6 or 7 years old

In trying to escape
my childhood.

My mom was an addict.

She's been clean
for about two years.

She's a true survivalist
because she didn't quit.

me want to prove to myself

That I'm not some
pretty wimp boy.

some kind of survival expert.

But my dad's a vietnam veteran,

And he's pretty adamant
about survival skills.

He's had us out in the
wilderness since we were kids.

He's more proud of me
than anyone

Even though
I'm going to be naked.

But africa really scares

of south africa

Is a lost world of grasslands

And deep river gorges
known as the wild coast,

A ruthless, inhospitable region.

This time of year
brings bone-chilling winds

And temperatures that can
plummet into the low 50s.

Hidden among
the tumbling waterfalls

And tall grasses are leopards,

Deadly mambas,
and aggressive cape baboons.

These primates have
one of nature's

Most terrifying sets of teeth

And often travel in troops of 30
to 100.

Jonathan:
the baboons are everywhere.

To know that there are
no cages in africa,

You know, holding these things
back from me is scary.

The nerves are
starting to kick in.

It's time to get rid of these,
time to get rid of everything.

I'm about to be put
in the wild butt naked.

What's going to help me
survive is this and these,

about the being naked part.

But these first few days

We are using
the natural crevices

In the rocks to purify water.

But there's nothing big
or serious.

Jonathan: this is definitely
the afraid part.

Jonathan:
I can feel it...

of baboons out last night.

I could hear them
all night long.

Yeah, it was hard.

We're gonna transfer
our fire from here to here

So that we can hopefully
put up another little shelter

To both act as a deterrent for
animals and try and stay warm.

So I'll see if we can get
some stuff for shelter-making.

and chopping down trees.

This challenge has
definitely made me realize

I'm not as strong as I thought
I was coming into this.

is a sit-and-wait predator.

It strikes in quick succession
and at lightning speed.

I'm really hungry.

On day 2, her partner, jonathan,

he abandoned the challenge,

And around kind of the trails
the animals use.

It looks like extraction's
by the ocean,

And that's a really,
really tough hike.

A treacherous four-mile hike
across rocky terrain

And complete a grueling swim
in 48-degree water

To reach her extraction point
at the edge of the indian ocean.

Weak and malnourished,

She is at the mercy
of the predators in the area.

I definitely want to get away
from here.

My body is just so tired,
and my feet are in pain.

Just can't stop.

What remaining strength she has
for this final swim.

any kind of negative scenario.

And it carried me through
and did the job.
