A landscape
of shifting habitats,

Where contrasting terrains
collide to form

One of the most challenging
places to survive on the planet.

In one region, violent storms
fill steep valleys

With over 60 inches
of rain a year,

Creating a lush hunting ground
for giant anaconda,

Venomous wandering spiders,

And aggressive
brazilian wasps

That can sting multiple times

And paralyze their prey.

Only a few miles away,
these waterlogged ravines

Have eroded into
an arid wasteland,

Forming an equally
formidable territory

Where searing temperatures
over 100 degrees

Beat down on giant
sandstone outcroppings

That provide
the perfect hideouts

For venomous rattlesnakes
and territorial jaguars.

Now, in an epic survival
challenge,

One man and one woman
will have to choose

Between flooded valleys
and sun-scorched savannas

In their attempt to survive

One of the toughest
locations on earth.

This is a really stressful
survival situation.

I'm seeing big,
puffy cumulus clouds,

And I'm just wondering
if it's going to rain on us

This afternoon.

I'm a wilderness educator,
and I'm out here

So I can put
the survival skills

I've been practicing for years
to the test for the first time.

I just hope that I don't become
really frustrated

With the bow drill when it
matters most for making fire

Because I really
don't want to fall apart

Because I know that I know
how to do this skill.

I want to take on this challenge

Because sometimes I can get
frustrated and doubt myself.

I just want the two of us

To make it through
the situation alive.

I think that, if I can
let go of my fears,

That this is going to be
a huge growth experience for me.

I'm from cary, north carolina,
and I own an i.t. Company.

I'm a competitor.
I'm 48 years old,

And I want to still be able

when I was younger.

to prove to myself

That I have what it takes
to make the 21 days.

I play soccer against kids
who are in their 20s,

And I want to show them
that getting older

Is not the end of the world.

You can still do everything,
just maybe at a slower pace.

Failure is really
not an option.

I came into this challenge
to make it to 21 days,

And I sure hope my partner
can come with me,

But if she can't, it's not going
to detract from my challenge.

I've had this bow
for about 5 years,

An extension of my arm.

and it appears to be homemade.

I feel confident that we'll get
a fire quickly with this.

A little unorthodox,
but I brought climbing rope.

Everything in this valley
feels super wet,

And this over here
is maybe a bit drier.

But at the same time,
it looks like we got

Some major predators.

I think, if we can head
into the palms,

We can probably find shelter.

I see a lot of resources
down there as well,

But I tell you,
as I'm looking down here,

I'm noticing the clouds.

It looks like rain is coming
and quite soon.

So we should probably get going.

Jesse: the plan right now
is just to hightail it

Down into the valley,
where we saw a lot of resources,

And get our shelter set up
as soon as possible.

Wes: I'll follow you.

We don't have any time to waste.

At a unique and rugged landscape
known as the city of rocks.

These sandstone outcroppings
have formed

Over millions of years,

Creating the perfect habitat
for venomous scorpions,

Rattlesnakes...

...and jaguars.

But it's the area's
aggressive insects

That can be
the most threatening,

Including arapua bees that build
their hives on the rock walls

And will die to defend them.

Jesse: this spot over here
looks like it could be dry.

It might be the best choice
for tonight.

This place looks

where you'd have a fire?

We'd have to have

We're exhausted, and we really
don't have time to dig in

And build a full shelter like we
thought we were going to have,

And so we've got
a little makeshift
